Intel Extreme Masters: Poland, Katowice. 18/01 - 20/01

The Intel Extreme Masters next stop takes us to the amazingly enthusiastic Poland, where once again the
world's best gamers will battle it out for supremacy over their respective fields. The StarCraft 2 and League

duke it out for the top spot. If you live in Europe and are reading this thread, this is your chance to be a

The European qualifier will once again be split up into 3 stages (detailed below). Stage 1 is for everyone,

Shouldn't you maybe do this on the 5th to give the players in Vegas a chance to return and participate?

You better invite fraer into stage three, he only dropped out last time because of Dreamhack Winter, he deserves another shot. Same goes for TitaN.

ESL´s website only states, that "additional qualifiers will be announced soon". But I would bet, that there will be NA-qualifiers; there are ones everytime and it would be against IEM´s policy of giving everyone a chance, if there were none.

Same for me. Always wanted to be part of such an event. Everything was too far away. Now with Poland it is just as I desire. Not that expensive. No long travel distance and over the top of that all a cool location for a tournament like this. Really looking forward!!

Oh btw. Link to Katowice ESL overview page is wrong. It is case sensitive and needs to set to katowice instead of Katowice.

I wish for next season the qualifiers will be a bit more open for Stage1 participants other than a 25% chance to make it though.

Other than that, IEM Katowice will be the best IEM to date - easy accessibility from both central and eastern europe and huge player and fanbase.

I believe MaNa will have to play in the Open Bracket due to how Seeding works and the fact that he'll be busy for some of the qualification dates. Ok.. I HOPE he participates in the Open Bracket ^_^

The victor of the EPS Poland Season V will be seeded as the champion of the host nation apparantly.

I'm nitpicking here on your commentary Kaelaris, but "as much as he can do" has always bugged me and you say it a lot. "As much as he can" would suffice.

Yeah, I mean, Titan fucking qualified for the last one but couldn't attend and fraer dropped out of Stage three cause of DH Winter, that should give you some points, shouldn't i?

From rulebook:
4.4 All-Time Ranking
The all-time ranking is a more sophisticated ranking used for seeding and qualifying (other
than for the World Championship Finals) purposes. It is based on the same point system,
but linearly decaying over 18 months. This ranking exists for single participants as well as
countries.
Please be patient.

They only give points for qualifying in the case of Guangzhou, where the whole tournament was cancelled.

Wat. What stream?

TakeTV's, it just finished, basically TLO defended a 2-rax af Fuzer and got far ahead and dicked around and dreagged the game out insanly won and ultimaltly pushed a near dead Fuzer with stupid amounts of queen and 3 Ultras. Game 3 starts soon. Fuzer won the first with a 2-rax.

Aaand game 3 is a proxy 2-rax.

Nah, you're correct. This week was pretty easy apart from a few matches like BratOK vs LZ, Beasty vs Dayshi or Real vs Harstem.

3 times proxy 2-rax. I even said to TLO to be careful against Fuzer after he beat me earlier in that qualifier :/

Yeah, Fuzer is either 2-raxing or doing a 3-5 CC opener most of the time, dunno why you wouldn't scout for proxies against him, guess it's TLO being cocky again or whatever, I don't know.

Clearly, you should have 3 times proxy 2-rax'd also

Nah man, I took a long game off TLO. I'm happy with that.
But I wanted him to win and go to IEM Poland.

That's very nice of you. But to be honest his chances to make it through stage 2 and 3 were pretty small anyway.
well there is still the open bracket. His dreamhack performance was quite decent. Let's hope he attends and is in good shape.

Well to be fair he might not have played him since he is back from korea.

Well, as Yello said, he played him the game before and told TLO exactly this. And Fuzer has never ever been a player know for standard games. Anyway, TLO never seemed to be someone who cares much for his opponents, that does come back to bite him sometimes.

German champion too stronk!

Yeah, obviously there's a losers bracket, but it's still an upset and bad for Stephano that he has to play a couple more matches with the danger of being out after the next loss.

Yes i read what Yello said. "TLO to be careful against Fuzer" isn't exactly "he is definetely 2 raxing you".
In my opinion it's better to play the race than the player. You should always be preparde to play against every strategy no matter who you are playing. I think it can lead you in a lot of traps if you heavily rely on knowing the player's playstyle. But who am i to judge.

Maybe, but it's not like I mean he should go no scout roach drops because Fuzer always goes mech, that'd be overpreparing and you're fucked against everything else, just sending out a drone and scouting for proxies against a player who's known as cheesy since the beta is simply good play and a sign of confidence that you'll beat your opponent without the extra income of the one drone while not being cocky enough to say you'll beat him no matter what he throws at you.

If you watched PartinG's play against foreigners at WCG, he scouted a lot more than usual and searched every edge of his base and natural in the earlygame and all the known proxy robo/stargate spots in the midgame. In the finals, he found Adelscott's proxy stargate and it helped him quite a bit, even though it might have caused him small disadvantages in the other games, but he wasn't surprised by his opponent.

I like smart and safe play a lot better than cockiness.

Lol if he want to do that he has to play muta/ling/bling, but that comp can win games as shown by koreans zergs.
However Stephano said he can't play muta properly because he doesn't use camera hotkeys.
I guess he just wants to troll every opponent.

well stehphano beat a lot of good players with his new style (e.g. MC a couple of days ago).
He said in an interview that he changed up his style because people were knowing his builds in and out and were blind countering him all the time.

You would think it would be common knowledge that a draw can exist in all tournaments.

Seriously, what are they gonna do? Give him a loss because he is floating in the corner?

It's a valid strat if you go by Naama's standards, I've seen him do it before, doubt it was intended to humiliate, he just wanted to win Naama style.

Stephano is playing so terribly bad. Not using the double evo for the armor upgrade in the beginning, beeing supply blocked for like 100 times. Dunno whats up with him.

VortiX 2-0 Stephano. Next up against Lucifron or Elfi. He should win either way.

Kas vs Dima on TaKeTV, Kas looking like he's in a decent position.

And if Vortix thinks people will stop calling him a patchzerg because of a patch who doesn't change much to the metagame...

Kas, really using the Raven to its fullest. Have a dream where maybe someone will pin in units in a choke with them although it appears Ultras really smoke those quick so wouldn't really work.

I hope Dima can make it still through the loser bracket, as Kas makes it through the winner. Would love to see both players in the IEM. They deserve much more respect than they are getting, especially considering how the visa story always fucks both of them up hard, yet they are still determined to play sc2 fulltime.

Is very strange that they always have to play each other in every single tournament. They are probably sooooo fucking tired of this.

I dont understand how this works, there are given 12 seeds in the qualifiers, but in the tournament there are four groups (A,B,C,D) each with 6 slots for players. That is 6 * 4 = 24 players.
So who will be the other 12 players? Will they be invited? Is there any ranking for that?

That is of course a possibility, but i would like to be sure. I am thinking about attending the event, but it is really not very close to my place :D So the qualified players make a huge role in my decision

It'll end up being 16 seeds at the end. They're missing the Korean qualifiers right now I think. Then the remaining 8 are from an open bracket at the event.

The korean seeds are not in the list. Maybe 4 seeds forgotten ?

I wonder if Lucifron gone away from computer or something (because he got qualify spot anyways)... wonder what takes so long to start next series.

Well as good as liquipedia is on quicker updates, you should never ever rely on it for tournament rules and stuff (as a participant or manager).
Thats what admins are there for.

We may though see a few walkovers for the seeds, thats pretty common yet unfortunate for the viewers.

It's been the same for the past tournaments, not sure why there is so much confusion about it today. It was explained to all players in advance and the matches on our website explain exactly why a match is needed or what a winner qualifies for.

The top 4 EU players will be seeded into a seperate group each so they won't meet again in the groupstage. That's why we are playing the winner bracket semis.

You do know that players play a lot of tournaments and rely a lot of information they get from liquipedia page and might not remember everything they were told. It would be handy if "we" editors knew rules how they go and could prepare brackets and special mention from rules advance. Just a thought so we don't get any Ret kind of incidents.

Why in the Hell left Lucifron this game??
He had 3 CC, 1/1 was on the way and he kill some drone, what want he more from this little push?
If it was a all in, why he didn´t pull his scv.
Can me some explain that, totally suprise about that leave from Luci...

That was odd! Sure luci was behind, he will have a rough time to deal with zerg tier 2 but still.. Some drops og zerg mistakes could easily bring him back in the game.. It was like an Idra gg?

ZvZvZvZ for the important rest of the tournament.

Hey, we still have Grubby to save us

He said IMPORTANT rest of the tournament. Grubby already qualified. 3 out of these 4 zergs will qualify and one will drop out. Let's see how this goes.

You do know that players play a lot of tournaments and rely a lot of information they get from liquipedia page and might not remember everything they were told. I gladly supply anyone with these kinds of information. I understand that our qualifiers can be confusing but your initial post sounded like we suddently changed something in our modus which is not the case.

- Player that reaches LB Final = Top Seed for Katowice
- Players that lose in LB R3 = Play for 7th Place

For 9th-12th place, seeding for backup spots in case them pesky asians drop out once again on the last minute or someone fails a visa. Which regularly happens for many tournaments.

We are letting them play out places 9 to 12 so we have a set replacement order in case someone drops out:
http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2/masters/season7_katowice_stage3_9-12_decider/rankings/

We keep having dropouts at events and in the past we replaced on a "first come, first served" basis which is not really a fair way to do it.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how come Grubby is already qualified? I don't see any Q next to his name on liquidpedia, but I see him as a qualified player. Don't get me wrong though, I am very happy to see him qualifying, I was just wondering!

The Q stands for getting a high seed. Four players will get a high seed and the remaining three will get a low seed, seven players overall qualify.

Haha, fucking tech switches! GGs Luci and Snute, fun to watch with the result I wanted! IEM Katowice might be a quite good event.

VortiX 2-0'd Bly, qualifies and is now playing Grubby for a high seed.

Stephano won't play Nerchio for a while because he's playing MSI Cup again, watch him in a Bo3 against Scarlett here: http://www.teamliquid.net/video/streams/EmSc Tv

Either it starts after they finish or he'll get walkovered, I don't know.

Thanks. Perhaps next time same qualifier phase is coming then you guys could remind early on how players qualify not when its running same time.

Btw your rules pdf doesn't provide information how this system goes. Only bracket shows some random postings (but who really looks those). It would be simple to just add detailed bracket rules and who qualifies/seeds. Fanatic liquipedia editors do read these.

Like most common rule set missing (for some tournament organizers) is how group stage ranking is done etc.

Stephano now has to play a third map vs Scarlett.
If Bly gets the walkover as well, that would be pretty silly. (Stephano would have played 10 Bo3 in all the qualifiers to get a Walkover in the deciding 2 and get nothing)

Stephano got completely screwed over by the scheduling clash. Lucifron manages to avoid the clash only because his MSI Pro Cup Group is not being played currently. I am sure if Nerchio had managed to qualify for MSI Pro Cup by beating Lucifron then they both would have got the walkover, right?

Now i have seen grubby vs kas and lucifron vs snute.. And I was surpriced how bad they played.. I see these 4 players as some of the high class foreigners. But there is a _HUGE_ step from these players to the korean code A players..! Well the low skill level they showed made we wonder, if it's just because it's the qualification of some tournament, and they will show their A game later, or if there is allready is like no chance in hell any of these players will take a game from any code A koreans?

indeed snute recently beat life, grubby beat mc, kas beat squirtle or seed i think in iron squid quali, so yeah they can definately beat code a or even code s koreans. Their only problem is that while their peak lvl may be on par their bottom level is a lot lower.

Not anymore due to visa issues (the limit is 3 months each 6 months). He won't be able to participate to Numericable M-House Cup neither.

Hope Stephano still goes there and plays the open bracket, these weren't too hard at IEMs

There have been two IEMs with open brackets, Cologne was incredibly hard and Singapore was incredibly easy. IEM Katowice should be somewhere in the middle, but probably still quite difficult.

So Stephano finishes in 8th place? So if anyone drops out, he will be first alternative to be invited in?

If anyone is interested, EPS Poland finals have just started. Nerchio (coming from the LB) vs Diestar (coming from the WB), Bo7.

So DieStar is qualified for IEM Katowice, as Nerchio already has a spot, right?

No, Stephano gets Nerchio's spot from the EU qualis. EPS win gives Nerchio higher seed as he's the host country champion

Any pros stated that they will play in the open bracket? (Apart from the qualified). Any koreans? Does anoyone know? I have already asked Naniwa and he said that he shouldnt go there. So we probably wont see Naniwa there.

Mana will compete. Other than that, I don't know, but I assume we'll see the usual Polish pros like Tefel, Paranoid, Diestar, Krolu and maybe Tarson, too. International is always pretty random, but Katowice is central enough that a bunch of good pros should be able to attend without too much trouble.
