There have been a number of questions about IPL5 I've received from players, managers, fans and others about IPL5, and there are a lot of Misconceptions about exactly what is happening when at IPL5 and who is going.
Well, here is a post revealing all of that.

Maaaan, what a stacked line-up, possibly the best line-up I've seen in any SC2 tournament.
Map pool is a little small though, I expected a little more in terms of maps.
I hope the players, casters and production crew are ready for one hell of a SC2 marathon, a four day event involving three tournaments is just insane 0_o
I thought DBS retired. He's still competing? I see Haypro is being replaced since he retired as well I could be wrong though. I just remembered reading it somewhere

No way DBS goes, he doesn't even have a team (and doesn't play seriously anymore).
Grubby is announced as a caster! He wouldn't be casting if he won a spot in the GSL World Championship team and therefore a spot in IPL 5, so I conclude that Lucifron took his side of the bracket and will play in both IPL5 and GSL WC!

Agree, I prefer the new MLG format with 2 separate brackets and a BO7 finals without any advantage for one or the other player.

nah, too little advantage a bo9 with 2 games up: -can get to seven games (normal finals length) -is an equivalent of a bo3 up (2 games) -WF winner needs 3 games, LF winner needs 5 games

it ran super late. i remember because i attended live and had to drive back to socal. according to their schedule the finals and ceremony was supposed to happen around 8-9 PM ish, but the first bo5 didn't finish until past midnight -_-

Ehh, at least the finals format is better than the previous one. I did like the dual Bo5 one in IPL4, but I suppose this isn't as bad as it could be. Bo7 or even Bo9 would be the best imo, but this is at least indicative of IPL's ability to recieve criticism from the community and take it with a good heart.

I guess it's fair, I'm just a bit scarred from IPL4 when I started watching at about 6PM I think and the finals were at like 7AM (or later, I don't remember), I was tired as fuck, the sun started to rise and by the time the second BO5 or whatever the format was started I was almost passed out and decided to go to sleep.
As long as the schedule is fine, I'm all for it, but if it's incredibly late again, I'd rather have it be quick.

Can't be avoided. if it's bo7 with a 1-0 lead, it can be 3-3 and it's over. If it's bo5+bo5, it can be 5-5 (2-3+3-2), even worse the WB winner can win the grand final despite losing 3-5 overall (0-3+3-2), and so on ... there will never be a perfect grand final format in a double-bracket system.

Whens the last time you heard someone complain about the DH/GSL formats with groups?....vs how many complaints do you hear about the format when they use double elim (MLG, etc.)

What you see here is the result of a giant screwup, but it worked out okay in the end, money, the GOMTV partnership, arbitrary changes and invites that originally weren't intended to be there at all apart from aLive will make this event a memorable one still.

bo5+bo3 finals really is bad though, MLG has figured out a way where the final series is actually always just one series that starts with 0-0, anything else is awful

DBS needs to be replaced and MKP says he is undecided on attending because of WCG. If he makes it into GSL Semis I highly doubt he'll pass that up. But if he doesn't it seems like he will choose WCG.

That player list is insane and the number of casters and matches are staggering. Over 200000$ in prize money? A four day event? Did IPL just decided to stomp on MLG or what? x))
I dont understand why IPL doesnt use HD and Painuser as casters anymore... HD's youtube channel subscribers made up a lot of the audience when they started with the very small tournament of IPL 1 and 2. I enjoyed watching these 2 casters more than any other caster they have used. Also, they really need to step it up this time after the abomination that was IPL TAC3. IPL 3 and 4 rivaled any other weekend tournament in terms of quality, even GomTV; but as of this moment some of us still have a sour taste from TAC3.
I don't understand how tournaments can still think that inviting 72 players is a good idea. Costs are exploding and there's still not more than 20 players who can win that thing. Most of those players get barely any media coverage and their stories usually don't give much more than telling who they've beaten. Everybody wants E-Sports to grow, but these assembly line tournaments are just producing an incredible amount of games with little to no meaning, instead of producing and hyping more meaningful matches. Prize money could be at least double that size, and therefore generate a lot more attention and hype than lots of B and C level players.

Did I get that right that they changed the final from a BO7 with a 2 point deficit to a BO5 followed by a possible BO3 like Lone Star just right now because of TL/Reddit demand?

There are ways of giving an advantage while still retaining "tension" in the grand finals from the outset. The MLG non-rematch format where they go from Bo3 (or 5) starting at 0-0 to extended Bo7 (or 9) if the Losers Bracket player wins gives the Winners Bracket player a clear advantage, but still requires the WB player to win the most games in the overall confrontation (almost as if it were a straight-up series) -- something you don't get even with a simple 1-0 WB advantage in a BoX series (which, by the way, would have been a greater reduction of advantage (compared to starting at 2-0) than what they decided to use).

If you are running a double-elimination tournament, you must make it so that that the LB-player has to win 2 series in order to win (Otherwise it isn't a double elimination tournament, as the double elimination principle doesn't apply to the UP-winner), but I don't see the point of reducing the length of the second series in the grand final.

They wont be using antiga shipyard. Not sure how i feel about that, every other tournament uses it and and its also on ladder still. Would like to hear the reasoning behind this.

metropolis is a much worse map, it's currently more zerg favoured than terran ever was on antiga (and terran vs. zerg on antiga is even)
I honestly think Zerg is starting to like Antiga, if you get creep at the terrans fourth, you essentially win the game, its near impossible to take the high ground with the fast creep.

It's not really fair, imo the winners bracket guy needs a 2x advantage. I.E: 4 Best of threes, starting up by 2 sets.

For those that are complaining about the finals format of a bo5 to bo3. This is something that I proposed at LSC2 for timing issues..and does offer a fair format for both the winner and loser.
No format is perfect... but for a matter of timing and to avoid any sort of 'extended series'.. this format does work.
Ideally, a second bo5 is a great choice... but timing and fatigue play a major role in the decision to run a possible 2nd bo5 series.
Once the loser wins the first bo5.. .essentially, the players are tied in number of loses and any format after that is fair and even. A single bo3 to determine the champion creates the same results (statistically) as a single bo5... but the time required is almost cut in half. I personally see the final bo3 as an 'overtime' after things have been evened up between the 2 players.

vip was actually cheaper because they had a half-off promotion. i know because i used to when i attended ipl4... but i definitely agree that it seems the vip is a lot more useful this go around (minus the hefty 250 price tag)

Good to know, thanks. I realize that a significant part of the pricing decision must have been the Cosmopolitian management so won't hold that against you guys. When the LR goes up for day one you might want to consider mentioning that or else there'll be page upon page of "OMG SO FEW PEOPLE IN THE CROWD." Which would most likely hurt the hype somewhat, which could be avoided by stating that people watching only the last three days save up to 80%. Speaking of the live report thread, will you guys be making it or will you look to the community for that? If you're making it, be sure to keep it updated plz.
Anyways, keep up the fantastic work IPL. This is looking like it will likely be the biggest and best tournament of the year (it even has terran players!) and what a tournament to visit as my first live tournament watching experience. You're all wonderful for putting this together.
I'm not sure how you decide on replacements, maybe just who have a team who will pay for a ticket? You should send a couple of invites to the rox.kis team whose players really deserve to show themselves at more tournaments.

IMO that's a bit harsh, especially in a situation where the WB player just beat the LB player in the WB final, and the difference in matches played is just one. However, in a tournament in which all other matches are Bo3 and the final would be Bo7, it balances out somewhat because someone has to win 4 games instead of 2.
The WB player starting at 1:0 in a Bo7 would give a small equity advantage/reward in the final series, and it's even better for timing (if that's a concern) than Bo5->Bo3 (3-6 games instead of 3-8 games), but you lose the "two series" approach that is consistent with the double-elimination format of the rest of the tournament (which seems to be significant, judging by responses to my previous post).
Below is a list of WB player equity with various series formats (assuming coinflip games), for comparison purposes. I compiled it for a topic about MLG, which is why the extended series stuff is in there. Entries relevant to this line of discussion are in bold.
ExtendedBo7rematchstarting from 2-0: 81.25% -- Equivalent to the originally announced IPL 5 format. It doesn't matter how the 2-0 advantage is earned; it's still a Bo7 starting at 2-0.
Extended Bo9 rematch starting from 2-0: 77.34375%
True double elimination Bo3 or Bo5 (LB player must win two series): 75% -- Same as the current IPL 5 format (for equity purposes, it doesn't matter that the series lengths are different).
Extended Bo7 rematch starting from 2-1: 68.75%
Extended Bo9 rematch starting from 2-1: 65.625%
Bo7 starting from 1-0: 65.625% -- What I'd like to see.
Initial Bo3 into extended Bo7 (LB player must win both series): 62.5%
Initial Bo5 into extended Bo9 (LB player must win both series): 60.7421875%
[And of course, a single BoX from 0-0 would be 50%.] -- What you'd like to see.

There's a small, but important difference in the MLG Championship Bracket format, though; it's two separate 20-player "double-elimination" brackets that feed into a single final series. There's still a WB advantage in each bracket; it's just that it's realized in the "semifinals" of the tournament (extended series rules and all), and the eventual finalists will not have faced each other previously in the Championship Bracket. Either one of them could have 1 or 0 match losses in their respective Champ bracket, but in this case, it doesn't matter, as they played completely different "tournaments" that had distinct player pools to get there (considering Championship stage only).
As for them retaining extended series; it's clear that they still don't want to have a situation where A eliminates B from the tournament having won fewer games head-to-head. They've bent to community pressure by getting rid of match history carryover across tournament stages, but I doubt they'll ever drop it completely, at least as long as the current management is in place. Personally, I'd like to see the match history stuff gone, but with them always using the 0-0 Bo3 into extended Bo7 (or Bo5 into Bo9) that they currently do when the Championship Semifinal (or Group Final) is not a rematch. (This would not affect Championship Finals.) It's one of the mildest WB advantages you can give; the WB player has more "chances", but must still win the most games during the round to advance.

I absolutely forgot about the extra chance to lose. Hm, I’m not sure what the value of a chance to win vs. a chance to lose is. It would depend on how early a player loses a series - considering the total amount of extra Bo3, one more Bo3 in the finals is probably fair to the upper bracket player. As you pointed out, we were looking at it from a different perspective and thank you for explaining the reason for the final Bo3.

Also, note that the original plan was to have 40 players (with eight getting expenses paid), but the satellite qualifiers for EU and (especially) NA happened at unfortunate times (weekends that would conflict with major offline tournaments), so they added more players and another round to the tournament.

It's been brought up a few times but MLG will most likely let him play since the bad PR from not allowing him to play would hurt them more then it helps them to keep him out of the tournament. I would imagine IPL is confirming this by adding him to the list.

I have no idea. I would assume that there would be a free stream for Thursday's matches, but then again I also would have assumed live spectators would get to watch Thursday's matches without spending $200 more than the cheapest ticket - the cheapest ticket being $50.

MLG has a parternship with Kespa. Kespa players are a big draw, and MLG might not be happy about them attending an IPL event, since IPL is in competition with MLG.
It's also entirely possible that MLG doesn't give a damn. Still, there's a potential conflict.

The brackets are stupid through there no attempt at trying to prevent people from meeting again in the loser bracket. They seem to have each player stuck with a group. So if you have stephano losing to violent and then violent losing you would have a rematch if stephano win in the loser bracket.

At the end of the day, these guys want to earn a living. GSL is their super important tournament, not IPL.

WCG has a lot more history in Korea, and plenty of big names in BW (e.g BoxeR) won WCG, so it is more of a legacy thing. Plus I think MKP's dream was to win WCG, and this is definitely his best opportunity with no Mvp, and basically only YongHwa and PartinG to oppose him.

Smart map pool, aiming the more balanced one, not necessarily for the entertaining ones. Liking the player pool, even though it is pretty light on KeSPA players (no Rain, no Flash, no Soulkey, no Roro, no Jeadong, that's too bad, is there an institutional reason behind that? IPL/ESF vs MLG/KeSPA?). Guessing HyuN will be replaced as well (double seed).
I really hope Grubby does not cast and just plays instead, since there are still slots for replacement and Grubby got 4th behind vortix in the gom wc qualifier. He seems to be in good form too. Well if he casts it will still be awesome, just not quite as much.
I was considering taking off a week of work to go to IPL5, but I wasn't able to swing it. Maybe I'll take a few days off anyways and just watch it. There are just too many awesome players and so much potential for the weekend. In my opinion the GSL finals aren't as interesting as what IPL5 has in store.
Regarding the bracket; how accurate is this because some of the players (like Sea) are missing while others who pulled out are still in (like Mvp). Is there an updated version?

Updated simulations, since we have an updated bracket, and I was able to figure out how the losers' bracket spread works by playing with the fantasy one. (I think it's a poor system, but whatever.)
Since we have a bit of a lack of information, I made the following assumptions:
Hendralisk and Ret replaced by no-one (they become byes).
Best of 3 throughout (including the two finals).
The validity of this simulation is pending verification of the above.
By the way, a missing number (instead of 0.00%) means either impossible, or so improbable that it's indistinguishable from zero with double-precision floats.
Worth noting is also that Sea has a grand total of three games in the database, so we have essentially no information about him.
If KeSPA players aren't allowed to compete at other tournaments because of the MLG partnership, then MLG really is killing StarCraft. Shame, since it makes tournaments more boring, stale, and less important as a premier competition. Hopefully this is not the case.

I have to commend IGN. When the initial qualifiers for IPL5 took place, there were some complaints from me and others that they clashed with other tournaments, specifically NASL3, WCS Canada, WCS Ukraine etc. I feared that IPL5 would suffer in quality and prestige because it would lack a strong and popular field of players due to these schedule clashes.
It is good to see that IGN took these complaints on board and changed their intial plans by having additional qualifiers and also bringing in players via the GSL World Championship team event. So now my fears for IPL5 will not be realised, in fact the opposite is now true and IPL 5 has the most stacked list of competitors of any SC2 tournament ever! This will bring the attention and prestige that IPL deserves. So well done to IGN for taking the right steps to ensure the legacy of IPL tournaments continues with a growing reputation. So plaudits to IPL for assembling such a field of players. The SC2 world will definitely be watching IPL5!
