ASUS ROG The GD Invitational has advanced to the playoffs stage where the six remaining players decide how the $10 000 USD prize pool shall be divided.
Yesterday we saw two groups of four to determine their inner rankings. EG.ThorZaIN.RC and TLAF-Liquid.TLO managed to come on top in their groups, so they are getting a free pass to the semi-finals and thus securing at least a $1000 prize for themselves.
In the first round of the playoffs, the second place finisher will play against the third place finisher in the other group. The matches are bo3 in the first round and bo5 from there on.
6 player single-elimination playoffs (group winners advance directly to semi-finals)
Map pool
TheGD Daybreak (6x1 middle base)
TheGD Antiga Shipyard (No gold bases, forced cross-spawns)
TheGD Entombed Valley (Horizontal spawns disabled)

They are all good guys so it's not easy to choose a winner to cheer for. Thorzain has won tournaments before and is on a team that pays well, so he may step aside. :p
Good matches upcoming, possible rematch from TSL3 semifinals with Kas and ThorZaIN.. and hopefully TLO can keep up his awesome run from yesterday, although LucifroN might be tough to handle.
Good morning everyone! Let's get this party started...
James hosting! Semmler being Semmler! Apollo birthdaying! Nightend speaking! Kas smiling! Elfi surprising! Lucifron fighting! Thorzain spooning! TLO winning!

I feel like that was the most subtle semmler insult ever, bravo sir, bravo.
I'm a little split on the replay matter. One might say that you should study for a test beforehand and then play it out, not doing it in the midst of it. It's also time consuming. On the other hand it's up to the competitors and organizers and doesn't really matter to me as a spectator. :3

Give players between 5/10 min after each game could be a descent rule ?

That's true. Would be interesting to have it brought up and debated amongst several pro's. Too bad we don't have a place for that. An event like Valencia eSports Congress for players would be a wet dream.

I see a TLO - T-funk final. Thorzain played some very good SC yesterday but I don't think we can predict how it will go after the amazing show TLO put up. Gogo TL-EG rivalry.

Nice to see Thorzain doing well again. It isn't the biggest result to get at least second place here, but his results recently (at least from what I have seen) have been pretty poor.
I think TLO would win the super-late game just because Elfi seems prone to making mistakes with his mothership. But I actually except to see all-ins and other nonstandard shorter games here.

TLO rolled over him yesterday though.
Yesterday was not exactly elfi´s best day. He defeated viOLet at Dreamhack, so he should be a threat to TLO as well. But predicting an elfi- or a TLO-series is hard enough, when both collide, I am not even trying it.

Hey, Elfi beat Violet at Dreamhack and took 2 games in a row off of fricken Life at TSL 4 (Life took 2nd at that tourney, it was after his coming out GSTL performance and part of Life's wrecking ball streak), I think he's got a shot at least. Liquipedia disagrees with you. 51% win rate at Pro-level is actually quite bad as opposed to his 67% win-rate in PvP
It chnaged recently, he said, the dates go back to 2010 AFAIK, bringing up all-time-statistics is missleading.
In fairness his reputation grew from being a PvP monster if he excels at any matchups then good for him but it's too early to say that right now
I just repeated, what elfi said in his interview yesterday, ofc. his main reputation comes from his legendary PvP, but he got better at his other MU´s as well.
On October 15 2012 02:05 MCDayC wrote: wait, TLO moved back to Germany? permanently?
He will go back to Korea for a while and then move back permanently in December, I think. At least that's what he wrote in a Skype convo that could be seen on his stream a while ago (the day before Liquid Rising was released).
As for Red Bull Stratos, the guy is at almost 100k feet now (live stream):
If you hatch first consistently it's your own fault really lol, gj from Elfi. Also TLO drones were kinda late, think he could've held if they were quicker to attack the cannons. It was insanely close >__<
Well it was close, if it had required one more hit from cannon for hatch to go down it probably would've survived. Elfi would've still had an advantage though.
Excellent counter from TLO, it was without a doubt the correct move. I doubt it'd be that good against a straight up immortal all-in, but against this delayed post-phoenix one, it was perfect.
Incredible response. Might be counterable, but the point of this all in is to hit him with a stupidly strong army which you can't exactly split. Perhaps if you cannon up your nat and warp sentries there in advance. Still, the nydus in the main is the second strong point of this build.
On October 15 2012 02:27 CruelZeratul wrote: Kill third, retreat, profit. I don't get why he pushed it further.
If you let the Zerg get to Infestors this can still go out very bad for you, even if it is 2-base against 2-base. That's why every Protoss pushes further and tries to kill a Zerg when going for the Immortal-Allin.

TLO was already at elfis base. He would get a massive blow to his economy and TLo could retreat with Nydus and don't lose his army while retaining 2 bases. TLO forced him into basetrade, it's how the build is planned.

Exactly, TLO would demolish his economy if he done that and would still have all his drones having only lost a hatchery.
I still think the protoss player can just load up 2 immortals into the warp prism and snipe the nydus. Just micro against the spines like ZeNEXTREME does against roaches!
I think the correct response for the Protoss player is to ignore the third and Natural and head straigth into the main and kill the Spines before they are done
On October 15 2012 02:27 Greenei wrote: tlo might revolutionize the MU. this defense is SOLID.
No, it's not. He could just retreat after sniping the third and defend with Sentries/Cannons. It's working because it is new.
Riiight. because TLO didn't do this 1000 times before on ladder/practise. He plays a build where he knows if the Toss turns around after killing the third he loses? I don't think so. He figured this build out over a period of time, practise and refinement.

Doesn't mean to much if the oponents don't react accordingly because they don't have enough practice against that.
Also I'm pretty happy with the turn out of the tournament so far. The top 3 are all players I want to do well, so the result dosn't matter as much, enabling me to just enjoy the games for the games themselves Only improvement for me might have been Kas over Thorzain but we can't have everything can we ^_^

Look, I'd love to see TLO do awesome stuff, but I'm not convinced it's actually a great strategy until I see it work against someone who's a real strong PvZ player - of which there aren't a lot of currently in Europe.

I don't understand why you'd be greedy with sending down drones to defend if you want to go hatch first. Atleast in my experience most of them can't help themselves trying to pull a fast cannon win cause they don't wanna let you have this advantage
dont understand TLO. Oh sure, drop a pylon next to my natural. Have a forge. Kill my hatch in the first game. Then... send drones back to main leaving just one trailing the probe...
TLO is really his own worst enemy here, he really needs to study up on how to approach a series a little more. His actual gameplay/mechanics are easily among the best at this tournament, but he consistently loses out to mindgames and weird decision making.
It's not impossible to hold hatch first against a cannon rush, and I like zergs who deliberately open hatch first to bait that strategy. But if you open hatch first and don't prepare for a cannon rush...you're just being silly. Hatch first is perfectly viable in ZvP, just don't be stubborn about it.

That series was more the opposite imo, constant blind 15 hatches come across a player too certain of his ability to hold a hatch first.

totally agree with this, Elfi is proving again and again that he is one of the best protoss in europe and people are still underestimating him.
Don't want to underrate Elfi, but he's so dead against Thorzain. Spoon terran has been pretty 100% on top of scouting so harder for Elfi to play mind games.

yes, it sucks that he went out in that fashion, but i am in a happy mood about his all around performance. can't wait for his next event! fighting!
Cannon rushing vs hatch first is 100% the correct response. No one should be blaming elfi for that. It's just disappointing that TLO thought he could be just that extra bit greedy rather than playing safe and outplaying elfi - which I'm sure he can do.
I dont get all the cheese, mindgames w/e comments. Maybe mindgames not going Nexus first, but after that 1st game and seeing TLO play yesterday that wasnt really too hard to figure out. He just scouted and reacted correctly.

You've got no idea what the hell was going on in that game, do you.

If you seriously think Thorzain could have lost after sniping that third base, I don't really think you had any clue what was going on.

pretty much agreed with this. the timing on killing the third was a culmination of really nice play by thorzain, which was even explained by apollo.. a good game, although thorzain could have finished it sooner (but we're only talking about 5 minutes longer)

Thats how greedy elfi is.
he would die to ANY agression with this build, but he doesnt give a fuck. i have to dislike players like this :/
He's playing his opponent on the map, his race, builds he used, and how the previous games played out. It's not a ladder bo1 coinflip with nothing riding on it. He won for these reasons. And he certainly gives a fuck.
Certain players always have the same pattern. "Next opponent is good, let's all in!" gamble all in works "I just beat one of the best non korean players, I'm fucking good! I can beat him whenever I want!" tries standard game, loses "Let's all in again!"

Yeah, anything counts.
It does, it's hard to have respect for players who seem incapable of winning a macro game, though.
Meh ... nothing went right for elfi with his all-in. Given that thorzain responded perfectly, I don't think he could have done anything to make that work.

nonsense, thorzain was very, very far ahead. only a huge blunder like move command or poor ghost control would have lost him the game. elfi didn't make any big army control errors after losing his third and yet it was never close after this point.
do you play much high level tvp? because this seemed obvious to me
elfis micro was fine. but he was simply 50 secs late. this way, he couldnt do nearly enough dmg to force thorzain to delay stim/medivacs or to beat him once he had it. usually, you kill a lot of workers or some missplaced marines.

Surely upsets are exciting in of themselves?
The other players at least seem to know how to transition in to the late game and can play a straight up macro match. Elfi always seems lost when it gets past the 12 minute mark.
His games are entertaining, but I'd have been disappointed if he won the tournament.

well, its cool to see some variation out of players. im not even disliking his playstyle too much, I just dislike how good results he has doing it. it shouldnt be like that, i cant respect him as much as players that did it with solid play.
im not saying elfi is terrible, all i say is that finals between lucifron/thorzain/tlo/kas wouldve been way more interesting and deserving than watching elfi flipping coins to decide what type of allin he uses. you can do that on ladder and have fun that way, but you should be unable to reach a tournament final with that.
Tournament was a pleasure to watch, for sure. 2GD and crew never disappoints. Also, really impressive play by Thorzain through and through. Those last games were pretty flawless. Happy to see Elfi and TLO being back on track after being a bit under the radar lately (I guess Elfi has been a bit more prominent than TLO though).
But holy cow, as someone mentioned earlier..Apollo's casting was probably the best I've ever heard. That man is on fire.

I guess not. He's just hating on elfi when he uses risky builds/cheese against someone better than him.

Right on it, no change from what I would actually do, just now there's intent behind it.
Very good tournament by thegdteam, really happy to see no one was forgotten at the airport. Good winner in Thorzai, was really hoping for TLO to win it though
For liquipedia purposes should I add thorzain to the assembly champions or next asus rog invite champion or shall we keep it separate from the asus rog events.
Really nice and well produced event as one would expect from ASUS ROG and The GD Studio. I'm a bit sad for elfi though, he keeps posting great results but still lacks that LAN win. Grats to Thorzain though, strong play and a deserved win.

At least not assembly, this has nothing to do with assembly, which is a lanparty held since 1992.
To clarify the many pauses we had this event: for some reason the computers were getting the low paged pool memory error, which froze the screen for a moment but it came back after switching to windows and back. The hardware on the computers is good + Show Spoiler +
so the machines themselves are not the problem. Fortunately the freezes didn't cause any re-games. Still, unacceptable situation for tournament conditions.

These are special events and shouldn't be used in the same breath, lol.
Anyone have playlist form this event? Especially one song with that weird sound in it. House song which is calm and then goes crazy. Has the word motherfucker in it I bnelieve.
