+ Show Spoiler [Spoiler-Free] ++ Show Spoiler [Overall Results] +
+ Show Spoiler [Live Reports] + ZerO vs. Classic Classic opens with banshee hellion but queens hold and some sick zergling runbys cripple the Terran economy, allowing ZerO to safely reach brood lord roach infestor and smash his opponents mech army.
BeSt vs. BaBy Despite some really cute positioning and drop play, BaBy just couldn't approach BeSt in terms of macro and mechanics, falling after a long supply block at 169 that foiled his own designs.
B Winners' Game Both players play for the late game and Zero, realizing he needs to delay his opponent until his greater spire pops, sends his brave roaches on a suicide mission to annihilate as much of his opponents economy as they can. After a successful foray into the mineral lines of BeSt, Zero is ready to morph in ten brood lords when he realizes he never made a greater spire. BeSt rolls him like an angry bear and easily smashes through the toothless zerg army.
B Losers' Game I was getting a cup of coffee and when I got back, scvs were chasing hellions. Then a banshee showed up. Really a complete slaughter. (BaBy 1 base bashed Classic)
B Final Game BaBy opened with a 12/14 rax and did a great job at denying early droning and taking an economic lead. Zero tried to repay in spades but BaBy held the baneling bust and despite underwhelming macro, took a lead and never gave it up.
Flash vs. Ryul2 Uninspired play from both players, let's not lie to each other. Flash takes his standard 14CC, Ryul2 does nothing to punish it. Flash takes hold of the center in the mid game and despite losing it, never lets go of the momentum. Although he was plagued by fungals that decimated his unspread army, his impeccable macro was too much for Ryul2. Not to mention Ryul2 prepared himself for an ultralisk switch then decided against it and tried to remake brood lords in front of 12 vikings. Ouch!
Last vs. BisAnG I wasn't looking, I think BisAnG made scouts so they dq'd him for being a hipster.
C Winners' Game Flash tried to bunker rush Last for going 14cc LOL but it didn't work. Last held a slight edge economic wise but Flash kept up by double expanding. Naturally Last stayed in his natural and was overpowered by Flashs imbalanced economy. Flash went mech, Last went marine tank, they met and fell in love. Flash told Last it wasn't meant to be and Last fell apart, heartbroken by Flashs much bigger army.
C Losers' Game BisAnG opened with an ineffective Stargate play, transitioned into an ineffective 7gate all in and died. Ryul2 did a good job of holding it, at one moment showing real promise by saving his roaches with burrow and trapping BisAnGs army once his reinforcements came by unburrowing behind them.
C Final Game Last bunker rushed the pants off Ryul2. It was.. uh.. pretty bad.

If either Flash or Baby doesn't make it I will be a sad panda
|
This is gonna be on at the same time as WCS
|
Zero > Classic Best < Baby Zero > Baby Classic > Best Baby > Classic
Zero + Baby
Flash > Ryul Last > Bisang Last > Flash Bisang > Ryul Flash > Bisang
Last + Flash

BeSt and Baby for me. I hope. Wouldn't mind if Flash got through though. This sure is a group of death :/

aww..I really want baby, best and zerO to advance...sad face, why all in the same group...On the other hand, there are way too many protosses already in the OSL...-_-
the other group, don't care about the players except flash and he should get through.

Can we swap BeSt for Ryul2? TT I want Best, ZerO and Baby through. Second group is pretty uninteresting. Probably Flash and Last.

ZerO has looked very impressive so far against Protoss, but I haven't seen him against Terran yet in SPL. Nevertheless, his ZvP games have shown exceptional mechanics and play that look on-par with some GSL Zergs. Classic will have a hard time against him, and Best will have an even harder time.
I think Baby will hopefully do well, especially with Team 8 owning face in SPL and Cezanne definitely working wonders with his coaching.
I think Last definitely has a strong chance of advancing, as his SPL performance has been strong thus far.
There isn't much info for Ryul2 and Bisang in the TLPD, but a look into their OSL prelim matchups reveals some information. Ryul2 went through Shine, Shy, and hitmaN (hahahaha, hitmaN) to qualify. Shy is obviously known for his defeat of Ace in the cross-match thing. Bisang went through Bisu, Snow, and Mini to qualify. Bisu sucks at SC2, and Shine's TLPD has a few games confused with TSL.Shine. Mini hasn't been too impressive either. However, Snow is definitely a strong player, beating Flash and Nestea in the prelims for WCG and WCS, though my memory may be mistaken.
Flash's performance is kinda hard to predict. I hope Clide has been working the KT house long enough to make at least a small difference in Flash's play since his deficiencies in SC2 have already been exploited in SPL. The STX Terrans have already shown a TvT build that can directly counter Flash's build. Also, he tends to play too passive and greedy against Zergs, which has been his undoing quite a few times.

Huh, I'm not really a Brood War guy and I haven't really seen too much pro league this season, but I think I kind of have a general idea of how these guys are doing based off the other posts in this thread. It will definitely be interesting to see more of these guys as they progress further into OS2L. I'm going to go ahead and root for Classic, Baby, Flash, and Last for the sake of Terran pride but I'd definitely like to check this out later tonight. Good luck to all of the players and hopefully they can produce good games.

Very standard expand + hellion opening from Classic
Zero getting a pretty quick ling speed and following it with a third.
|
Banshee hellion opener, very suave.
Well it did absolutely no damage and classic let a bunch of lings force a cancel on his third. Whoopiee
|
|
United Kingdom38255 Posts
Classic playing mech!
Harassing with cloaked banshees in the main and hellions at the third.
ZerO denying Classic's third with a ling runby
ZerO still fending off heavy hellion pressure with nothing but lings and queens at the 11 minute mark
Infestors about to pop out
|
What's Zeros gameplan? Just rush hive and mass ling infestor ultra?
|
Classic opens with a combination that has a high chance to kill workers. Zero kills twice as many with just zerglings despite the presence of many hellion. Go figure

I don't think he realised it was mech until just now.
Great ling runby though, delayed the smaller mech push, killed some units, and killed a bunch of workers.
|
Lol. Classic cloaks his banshee to cross the map...runs out of energy as soon as it reaches ZerO's base
|
Classic doesn't have the economy to recover and he doesn't have a big enough army to kill Zero. Unless he gets miraculous positioning and I mean god mandated positioning, I can't see him winning.
|

Zero's ling runby's have been so good.
Bought so much time and actually killed so many workers.
Now comes the broodlord march

A bit too passive by Baby. Had to try to deny the 3rd. A few too many vikings as well (although that is hard since you aren't always sure how many colossi your opponent will build).

gonna be a baby vs zerO possibility right?

thats just lack of experience. ZerO freed up roaches supply too soon, erected too few spines (with like 2.5k in his bank). He ended up unnecessarily dying before bl hit

I'm glad this group is living up to expectations as the group of death, last weeks games were pretty anticlimactic but today's have been enjoyable so far.

You would be surprise how well that works. Maybe you won't win GSLs but you can definitely hang in Code S if you just play solid. More games have been lost due to mistakes rather than won due to brilliant play.
|
If you have a single spire and you're trying to reach a crisp brood lord time, it really helps not to have +1 attack (should have been carapace anyway) hogging your only spire and preventing your dead weight corruptors from becoming the army you have to have.
You are of course right vthree but I'm having a serious crisis of faith in the ability of these guys. I'm not expecting innovative, groundbreaking play but damnit I don't want to see THAT level of disaster.

12/14 rax from Baby, forces a lot of lost mining time and lings from Zero and doesn't lose anything.
Baby takes his expo at 20 scv's vs 15 drones, despite neither player actually killing anything in the early pressure.
Baby bunkering down the bottom of the ramp to stop Zero being able to slip out with a drone to take a third, and takes a third CC himself. Perfect opening for him so far.
|
United Kingdom38255 Posts
Zero with a huge 2 base baneling bust.
Baby defends it absolutely perfectly. Noting that little bit of depot blocking in his sim city down for the future.
Baby going into a big bio blue flame force. Zero tosses down a roach warren and tries to go into double ups.
Baby 20 supply up with a third established, Zero in a lot of trouble now.
|
ok im confused, opoodian is calling the terran Ty some ppl here are calling him Classic and baby... which is it?
|
Sickest hold by Baby. Goddamn.
|
The game may be completely in BaBys favor but he needs to capitalize on it immediately. Letting Zero catch up in economy, EVEN after that baneling bust, is risky.
|
baneling bust but baby holds

Ty is Baby's other ID. It's kinda annoying that some players have multiple id's, like Rain/by.sun

Classic = Classic, he was the other Terran in the group who isn't playing this match.
Baby = TY. It's like people calling ForGG ForGG even when he was officially playing under a different ID>
===
72 SCV's vs 57 drones
Everything in baby's favour bar upgrades.
|
I know you're really digging BaBy Asha` but his macro is gross as hell.
If he just pushed out now he could win the game.
|
Baby needs to practice not getting supply blocked so often :p
|
United Kingdom38255 Posts
Baby up 50 supply.
Both players trying to establish fourths, Baby's is slightly delayed by a creep drop but will be otherwise uncontested, Zero having to fend off drops.
Here comes the huge 2/2 timing from Baby
===
Zero counters with a runby but Baby has units in position and cleans it up with reinforcements.
Baby pushes further into Zero's half of the map, good marine splits keep lots of bio alive when zero engages/
===
Baby now almost sieged up between Zero's fourth and third.
Good fungals stalling the push a bit but Zero's fourth does go down.
|
man,, Playoffs for proleague is gonna look so good for Team 8, can't wait <3 Jaedong & Baby

Broodlords get out in time for Zero to hold on to his third, and with good control + a timely fungal he's able to force Baby to back up.
Baby producing 5 vikings at a time though and rallies them all up forwards. Constant pressure on Zero's third. Baby also elevators in a marine/tank force at the natural. Zero can't break either front and is forced to GG out.
Best and Baby advance.

Good games from group B!
Obviously still plenty of flaws to work on, but fun to watch and lots of great bits of play dotted around.
Feel sorry for Zero, he'd have had a great chance of advancing in any other group.

Awesome! Really happy so see Baby get through!

Stated off well against Best but sat back too much and died against zealot archon army. Against Classic he pressured with a couple marines and hellions while going proxy banshees it completely destroyed Classic. Against Zero did a later 2 rax into 3cc when Zero really overreacted. Zero tried to baneling bust him and he held it off perfectly with the help of some really good sim city. After that Zero just slowly died because he was always behind.

The build order for this one should be simple:
Build extractor Tech to lair Make 3 drones Drop creep somewhere Make spawning pool Profit

Flash's problem seems to be that he has BW syndrome and thinks he can just win by powering his economy and beating Zerg in head to head battles. For someone who has the multi-tasking ability and unit control potential, he needs to really use it and make it easier on himself lol

Byun and Polt still better, MKP has the best splits and on the spot army control, but his army movements aren't that good and that has to do with him playing as blind as possible, he ofttimes get his entire army caught in the middle of nowhere , but wins the battle anyways, unless he gets his army fungaled. Both Polt and Byun move their armies like true artists while still having good army control on the spot, with Polt being almost as good as mkp at splitting and dodging stuff.

Why risk it with a 2 rax when you can expand behind banshee harass and just tank push him? In his last two PL TvTs, he went pure bio after the 14cc and died to a standard tank push without stim.

Somethings to consider, the jaded BW fanbase, the SC2 fanbase that doesn't see KeSPA players at the eSF players level, WCS games today at GOM/Mokdong, and its almost 11pm on a weekday.

The GOM studio is meant to be somewhere thats pretty out of the way too according to an interview with Mr Chae. Yet the OGN studio was dead even when MVP and DRG were playing, and there was no GSL on that day.
Maybe its just because it's only qualifiers?

If one of the big name kespa players could somehow post some great results in a tournament it would really help boost SC2's popularity in Korea to another level. I'm sure they'll get there eventually.

Maybe some BW fans are bitter, but I'll bet most have given SC2 a chance, at least in terms of spectating. Perhaps they just don't find it interesting or entertaining, even with their BW heroes playing it.

I know that the GSL pulls more than 50 during at least Finals series and special events.
I don't expect any of these tournaments to draw the crowds that BW used to pull or even that LOL is pulling now. Still, it depresses me that the BW fans wouldn't at least support the players. I mean, I'm not one to talk since I love SC2 but I know the players feel bad about the switch, they could use some support.
And to second the question, are ODT's always this empty? I highly doubt it though.

There are interviews with the OSL casters where they say that a lot of the crowd care more about the players and less about the game, so with only one member of TBLS in this OSL that is surely contributing to low crowd numbers.

i think everyone is over reacting a little bit. it is still very early days for OGN in sc2, people aren't really used to it yet, and there are so many sc2 tournaments on at the moment, but there was only one place to go for bw, thats why the crowd is so different.
i am sure with time things will even out alot more, with proleague finishing etc. i do expect some players to quit, maybe leave teams and join sc2 teams, mergers etc. the scene has to change quite a bit. Right now no one knows quite what to think.
especially since Kespa and non-kespa still are seperated most of the time, still very segmented.
|
Also factor in that many fans may just be tired of Starcraft, and now when their BW is gone they have no reason to actually follow it anymore. I think this is why LoL blew up so hard in Korea tbh. A new game, a fresh new start, kinda. Also because everyone can play it, it's social if you play it with friends etc etc. RTS is kinda fading away, just like the more competitive FPS games.

Looks like the favorites to win DRG, MC, and MKP. MVP isn't looking too good lately, and neither is Nestea. I don't see any of the Kespa players having a chance. Oz could be a surprise also.
I don't see the Kespa players being competitive as a whole for another 6+ months at least.

I highly doubt it though. Well, GOM studio in Mok Dong only holds about 50 people. And during Code A the studio is frequently unfilled. Since this is just an extension to the prelims I guess I'm not surprised at all that it isn't filled. Come time for the actual tournament to begin I think there will be bigger crowds.
Edit: And ofc there are more than 50 people at the Finals. But that's not what we're discussing ^_^

yeah i have been wondering the same thing, and although i do agree for now, given they have only been playing for a few months, Kespa players shouldnt be given unfair advantages all of the time. In future i hope they have to fight alongside everyone else for spots and in tournaments.

MC winning the first OSL would be beautiful, same for MVP.
I don't think the Kespa players will take as long as 6 months to competitive, maybe to reach Code S/OSL winner levels, but I think they will start taking games from Code S players soon and we could see a few reach the next Code A. That's another benefit of the double elim format in the WCS for them.

actually i wouldn't mind gom throwing a few kespa players into the up/downs maybe (2 ish) and maybe 2-4 spots for code A hrmm. we need sc2 fans to build an attachment to these new guys too, and for their fans to see them play sc2 and hopefully support them a bit more

I don't see the need for it. A couple of Kespa players made it through the WCS qualifiers and those were harder than the Code A qualifiers. While the Code A qualies are still brutal it's not quite the same degree as they used to be when half the best players were still outside the GSL, and you see several people who might not really be on that kind of level make it in off an easy draw the last few seasons.

Neither does DRG. MC is probably the best player in the tournament, but with Bo1 groupstages, it's difficult to say what will happen. Especially in PvPs.

Exactly, the Code B qualifiers are nothing new to them either because of their experiance of the OSL prelims, the only thing that should be holding the majority of them back is their skill level and it wont be long before they can beat Code A players.

Anyone wondering how long it will take for kespa players to be competitive should watch Gumiho vs Soulkey that happened tonight in the WCS.
Soulkey really played like a boss vs one of the very best terrans going around at the moment, it was really impressive despite what the result says, really great games.

It depends how fast GOM wants Kespa players to get to Code S. Because if all Kespa players need to go through code B, only a small amount will make it (currently) and they can get taken out in first round and go back to Code B again. But who knows, the next GSL is still 1 more month away due to WCS so the Kespa players will get more time.
|
Kespa players need that round of proleague to finish already, coz even if they do not put too much effort in BW, they surely still get distracted there and one cannot fully commit to sc2 with BW hanging over his head

It will be a sad day when that round is over, but now that the OSL is done BW is only hindering the players from competing with everyone, they are still improving at a decent rate and that'll only quicken when they don't have thier attention divided between the two

But who knows, the next GSL is still 1 more month away due to WCS so the Kespa players will get more time. the up/downs for season 4 start on the 27th, not that far away. i expect prelims to be early september?
Are they not usually the weekend after up/downs are done?

I think the Kespa teams are already commiting mostly to sc2 and scooting by with preexisting bw knowledge for BW component.

Exactly, the Code B qualifiers are nothing new to them either because of their experiance of the OSL prelims, the only thing that should be holding the majority of them back is their skill level and it wont be long before they can beat Code A players. I don't see the Kespa players being competitive as a whole for another 6+ months at least. MKP doesn't look that good lately too. Neither does DRG. MC is probably the best player in the tournament, but with Bo1 groupstages, it's difficult to say what will happen. Especially in PvPs.
MLG curse is very strong.... MKP managed to keep it at a respectable if inconsistent level after Winter, DRG might actually wish he never won Spring.

I think Bisu's issue is that his style of play doesn't translate as well to SC2 Protoss. Maybe he can try the HerO drop harass style but is definitely hard to pull off.

Most of the Kespa Zergs seem to die really easily in early game, at least from the games that I've seen.

Ryul thought the pressure was over and stopped producing units.

Most of the Kespa players lost to players who were either in code S or Code A so i am possitive that a decent number of Kespa players will make it .

I think because you need a really good understanding as a zerg as to when to produce units and when to produce drones or tech. Your choice is really dependent on your opponent's actions. Whereas for terran/protoss, there are standard openings which you can basically follow that gets you to 2 base saturation and a decent size army. You might be slightly behind in macro since you didn't cut corners but you won't die outright to pushes.

I think that's smart for him at current stage. His advantage is mechanism in micro/macro, so he is better equipped to handle those high risk situations, however with current understanding and game decision it is not ideal for him to enter long term even games with GSL players.

From the little ive seen of Bisus SC2 it seems like he cant FF very well. Im specifically thinking of his game vs Moon where he made 14 sentries (way to many) and still somehow didnt get right FF. If he had better FF that game he takes it and Moon is playing like a high code A low code S player at the moment.

Gomstudio is small so getting it pack is nothing. Also, Gomstudio is usually filled with 50% foreigners.
People are still in denial sc2 is as popular as bw or will be as popular as bw in Korea. When I post something about the fact that sc2 is not so popular in Korea and it may face severe problems after the transition. It will get downvoted to hell. People think sc2 can draw crowd like OSL finals. I just wanna say good will is simply not fact.

You know much more than me, but I think GSL finals are normally in that small concert hall and it can fill only hundreds of people. It got packed, but it's actually not that big. The Busan beach also doesn't have that many people if you watch closely. The empty seats that Seed's window reflects are filled later on but that's the front rows. From pictures around the net, there are tons of empty seats in the back behind casters' stages.

But if you watch sc1 in 2000 or 2001, there were much more people watching. And that's the first two years of sc1. This "thing will grow" reason has been repeatedly put out and I just want to say it's a wrong argument. SC1 was already very popular in the beginning.

That's a very selective interpretation of the events that happened.
You're just saying that everyone is waiting on SC2 to be balanced and complete but Brood War was available worldwide within 12 months of Starcrafts release and didn't drastically change through balance patches ever.
There's no sense in arguing over something neither of us can predict but I doubt SC2 will be any more successful than it already is.

As much as I believe SC2 has a niche in Korea, I don't believe that it well get to BW level in terms of popularity either. I think that's also just because of the nature of gaming now. It becomes less about going to Net Cafes or PC Bangs (as they are called in Korea) with your friends and playing. Since everything is online, you play what you PERSONALLY want to play.
Plus, there is no doubt games like LoL and DOTA will be more popular because it still maintains that kind of group dynamic that kids during Boxer's era experienced when they went to PC Bangs to play group matches in Brood War.
Either way, I think GOM packs in enough crowds to at least inspire the players and draw marginal profits as well. I know there's a big chance that the OSL will never be what it used to but it could sure draw more than 5 or 6 people.
On a personal note, I don't care if SC2 competitions in Korea never draw the crowds that BW did in its heyday. I just want it to, at least, draw enough, especially in the face of more popular games like LoL and Dota to survive and thrive.
No hating here. OSL was great, I just think GSL can be its own thing, maybe not as big but at least a successful franchise somewhat.

Well there is a lot of life to be born from Starcraft II. They have two more expansions. If Blizzard supports it more in the future we have no idea how big Starcraft II will be. Kespa now supporting it and going to get bigger there plus with the SC:BW players playing it will cause more hype especially when Heart of the Swarm comes out.

Kespa now supporting it and going to get bigger there plus with the SC:BW players playing it will cause more hype especially when Heart of the Swarm comes out. Especially some people think LoL will be a fad. They feel that it is fun to play but not fun to watch. I tried myself an feel the same.
So the entire scene relies on Blizzard's life support.

That's a lot of Protoss...glad Best made it though, I have three SKT players to cheer for in the ro16.

Does anyone know what format the Ro16 is? Is it just single elim bracket from now or is there another group stage like the last OSL Ro16?
Wait, did I miss Fantasy playing? Oh god. I missed Fantasy and Flash. Bring on the Ro16!

If there is no casting for some reason I'll do it again, but every indication is there will be an official English stream from OGN at http://www.twitch.tv/ogn_star2hd

Somebody please PM link to VODs? I don't see them in the OP and I don't want to read through the thread because of spoilers.

If BW came out today it wouldn't be successful either. Of course SC2 isn't going to have an easy ride. What are you trying to say? "Shut it all down, let's play LoL"? It's been two years. That's not really very long at all. and there aren't downvotes here, it's not reddit there are actually some people who dont want sc2 to do well/smile deep inside when it doesn't do well....

Maybe they don't like the company that makes it anymore

I cringe at the thought of Doa and Moletrap casting again. No, just no.

VODS anyone? Please PM me if you know where they are or anything. There's nothing in the OP, nothing on the esportstv Youtube channel and I can't read through the thread or stuff will get spoiled.

So, this was Flash's first televised Star2 match, and there are only 24 pages comments? What am I missing here? I have been off the grid for 2 weeks, but... Why no fuzz?

I would like to see brood war keep going alongside starcraft 2. Maybe Blizzard can patch brood war like tweak queens or a less commonly used unit to change up the meta game. I think brood war is still too good a game to just kill off.

Flash hasn't been doing so hot in sc2 in proleague lately.

Not counting the MLG invitational tournament he is 4-7 in proleague (sc2 only I am not counting bw).
