I see that Morrow's playing and that there are some rules that say "can't change race between games" -- does this mean games in a set, or games overall?
I hope he can play his normal race-picking game. Always been a fan of Morrow -- he has had some moments of real brilliance, and is so much fun to watch.

"Players may change race between games."
Please do not spread misinformation, it only makes it harder to admin the tournament heh.
Good luck and have fun to everybody participating in this tournament especially the brave new-comers, may the best player win! I'm so looking forward to this, especially since I'm trying my own luck too.
I'd love to play, yet I keep thinking that the guy next to me who is actually working on his dissertation might not like that very much. I also figured that playing SC in a library is generally a bad idea. So I'll leave up to the guys who have time. glhf!
Am I just really bad at spotting the pros in the mass of unknowns or are is a disappointingly low number of pros playing in this? I'm missing a lot of big names. It was the same for TSL 3, many of the top pros only started competing halfway through, but with how competitive the scene is now I'd have hoped everyone would take the qualifiers seriously from the start.

Well, most people didn't know much about Thorzain in the qualifiers. Who knows what would have happened if more pros participated
That said, I see quite a few of them just glancing over the list so I'm not sure it's really a low number.
Edit: Here are some of the players I recognize. I might have missed a few and not all top level players but I'd call it a solid turnout for the first one (depending how many show up today). I'm not that familiar with the eu scene either so there might be some hidden gems of the ones I don't know of.

not really w/r/t TSL3, the first qualifier iirc had Thorzain, Naniwa, and Kas in the semifinals.
and hasuobs lost to Ciara in Ro8, otherwise it would have been the same semifinals as the actual tournament.

this is gonna be sick, so many strong players in the bracket. how exactly does qualification work? i think it's something like the winner of this tournament qualifies straight away and the top something get a certain amount of points towards qualifying depending on their exact placement?

No EG players but other than that who exactly is missing from the best players in Europe / NA?
For starters, Stephano, Naniwa, SaSe, the top three, and Thorzain.
top 3 of TSL3 (Thorzain, Naniwa and Kas) already have seeds for TSL4. Sase is probably on his way back to Korea/recently arrived from MLG, and maybe he chooses to play in the Korean qualifiers anyways cause he's a fuckin baller. Stephano i don't know. maybe he just doesn't care.

Naniwa and Thorzain are already qualified. Sase and Stephano may very well still be travelling, or in Sase's case, he may be playing in the Korean qualifiers since he is living there.

You do realize non of them except Stephano (whom I'm not sure) can compete in this qualifier right? He was responding to a post critising players for not participating, so it's not really relevant for the players where it's no choice.

Easiest games so far must be for Dimaga and sheth, Dimagas opponent left the moment he scouted dimaga, sheth won after 11 minutes cause he had banelings and his opponent had none.

Global notices like that should really get a coloured background imo, maybe yellow like the border on the "new!" note in the main nav area. Being so unobtrusive I think people tend to not even take it in unless they know it's there in the first place heh

Stephano could not make this because he is travelling back to France. Only arrived in Paris a few hours ago. He has to go to Sweden for this weekend's DreamHack, and tomorrow/thursday morning he has an NASL match. Too much travelling for him to make this qualifier, I guess.
To be fair, I reckon all the other competitors will be very happy that Stephano misses this one!

They just got back from Anaheim and the time is bad for them, maybe they will play in the NA quali.
I first started watching pro-SCII around the R016 of TSL3. It's awesome to be watching the TSL4 starting from the qualifying tournaments. Just reviewing all the rules and seeds, and I just love the open qualifier system and points. Truly merit based and with a guarantee of wide geographic diversity.

The brackets are updated by players being logged in and filling in their results, it's not really viable for Liquipedia. I wonder if there can exist some sort of automated copy paste.

Socke got back only a couple of hours ago as well, and he's playing. Still, I can understand why players who attended MLG don't participate.

It's not that easy not everyone is able to travel the same way. For example Ret hadn't slept yet just now after a 22h trip back. It's easy for Americans though!

Should be fairly easy to implement with a screen scrape, and a mediawiki client. But even more easy if you look up the results up directly in your database.

I meant the "design" of liquipedia where you have good spacing between the cells of each rounds where you clearly see which 2 fought out and who will they face in the next round. It also got a line that shows to which cell the winner goes. Not complaining about anything major, jsut the "view". I hope it's clear now. Oh well, it will be good when there is less ppl left in the tournament I guess.
And what about spades ? I think he said he was still playing, just not on a big team, is he going to attend to a qualifier ? He is interested ? Is he allowed ?
Anyway, gogo dragon ! Proudly wearing the french flag on the brackets xD
I actualy love the brackets in TL qualifiers, You can click on the different round and it will cut out the previous rounds. Not every tournament allows as that, but its very usefull.

What? Welmu won against Happy. Nobody is supposed to win against Happy. Nobody.
The TSL Qualifier format reminds me of major poker tournaments. You have a decent number of well known players. You know that a handful of those will advance to the Bo3 stage. But trying to predict who will do well, and which "no name" players will make deep runs is close to impossible.
I'm a huge fan of TSL, love these events. But am I the only one who doesn't feel that it's entirely legitimate anymore?
I see all these good players getting knocked out before round of 32 by complete unknowns. I would love to see new blood in the scene, but how do we know they're not hacking or cheating in some way? Sorry to bring it up but all of these upsets have that shadow hanging over them constantly and makes it way less fun for me.
Edit: I've also only started feeling this way since the Spades/Impa thing, before that I was blissfully ignorant.

If this was a one time thing I would definitely agree. But winning several Bo1s in a row is a strength as well, and by no means will an undeserving player end up winning it all and taking the seed. Now, I can't remember the total of qualifiers they intend having, but the point system will reward players who are consistently able to beat this format.
edit: I somehow figuered your post was about Bo1s and not about cheating. Nevermind me.

I hope Blizzard come's out with something in order to ease the communities fears
All EU/NA players may play in both the 5 NA qualifiers and 5 EU qualifiers (10 total tournaments).
To play in EU/NA tournaments, the player must:
Live in North America or Europe; OR Be a citizen of a North American or European country; OR Live in South America
To play in Korea, the player must:
Live in Korea; OR Be a citizen of Korea
Players who qualify for both must elect whether they wish to participate in the 10 EU/NA tournaments or the 5 Korean tournaments. Those in China, Taiwan, and SEA may choose to play in either the EU/NA tournaments or in the Korean events. Players in South America will play on the EU/NA qualifiers.
Players will indicate which they are choosing simply by entering and playing an event on that server. Entering events on both point rankings will result in disqualification.
Examples, assuming these players wish to participate in TSL4:
EG.iNcontroL lives in the United States and is not a citizen of Korea, he can only choose to play in the 10 EU/NA qualifiers IM.NesTea lives in Korea and is not a citizen of a NA or EU country, he can only choose to play in the 5 KR qualifiers Liquid`Jinro lives in Korea and is a citizen of Sweden, he can elect to play in the 10 EU/NA qualifiers OR the 5 KR qualifiers Empire.Violet lives in the United States and is a citizen of Korea, he can elect to play in the 10 EU/NA qualifiers OR the 5 KR qualifiers GamaniaSen lives in Taiwan, he can choose to play in the 10 EU/NA qualifiers OR the 5 KR qualifiers

It all averages out in the end though. That's why we have a bunch of these!
I think Ro64 bo3 would be better. At least most of the favorites got there. But i know there are probably 300 pages in the internal forums discussing this topic :D
Only upset I see at that stage was PBunny beating Nerchio though. Wouldn't have changed much.
Turuk over Socke is just as much of an upset. Although, Socke just came back from the US, so his condition could be not the best.
I would argue that IeZael > Strelok and giantt > CatZ are quite the upsets as well.

I guess I just could've if I killed the 3rd when it barely lived with like 100hp.
The only think i dislike morrow is him not mirroring in ZvZ. I dunno why but i really dislike this on him. For the rest he seems a nice guy. Maybe it's because i remember Ret Struggling in ZvZ back in BW when he was in Korea trying to improve it after he used to play TvZ just like morrow.

I think he will cast, just not live. All games from ro16 and forward have to be cast from replays. And then from the semi it's TL's own stream. That's how it's been before at least.

He said he is not allowed to cast live but from replays.
He said he is going to wait to make sure there is no potential stream cheating even though he's casting on a 2 minute delay. He said he wanted to wait for replays in the later rounds

Bleh, already 30 mins since it should've started and still nothing. I was hoping to see at least some games before I go to bed. I hope Lalush or Welmu wins the whole thing.
Fenix got sick before an IEM in Europe, can remember wichi one was after that he just died... then he revived from his ashes to claim his spot in the WCS latin america taking the 1st place in the peruvian qualys, he has been practicing in EU server i think, not 100% sure
LaLuSh have always been one of the more intelligent player out there but never really made it far because of nerves or studies. This season he reached 77% win percentage on the ladder, a high number which is usually reserved for the likes of MaNa, Kas, ThorZaIN or Stephano. Since the whole Millenium line-up is gearing up for DreamHack, I'm looking forward to his performance.
So how's Lalush raging nowadays? He sort of made me an anti-fan with all his antics in the past but it was a long time since I watched any of his matches.

Read the TL qualifier rules. (Yes, he is, but for clarification, as I said, read the rules.)
Maybe so, but if a Korean wins the NA/EU qualifier I'd recommend getting a head start run from the shitstorm that will happen
There won't be a shitstorm. It's not about nationality but rather your location. It would be very stupid to force any NA and EU living in Korea to be forced to play with massive lag and vice versa. It's just logical.

yes but they want to cast both semifinals and they run at the same time, so they need to use the replays. this also allows the tournament to finish faster so the players can go to bed ( they can play the finals instead of waiting for casters )

I think that Ascend is fine, but part of the problem is the mics. It sounds like there's problems with both of theirs. Especially on Catz's end, it keeps getting 'hot' (I think that's the term) where it seems to pick up everything and max out for a sec. The mic quality is fairly poor. Catz also says 'um' and a ton of other fillers a lot. He takes control of the casting, but doesn't really fill the time well. He's really cutting off Ascend. Ah well, it's only the first.

I feel the same way. They don't seem very knowledgeable either. I don't play zerg so I don't know a lot about ZvZ, but they made it sound like Darkforce had no way of winning, and 10 secs later he is 50 supply up.
Edit: Surely DF is losing now though. I still felt like the call was too early.
What is this game, is there lag or something? Darkforce seems to have no control on his infestors ... all the battles they are just watching ... is he in Korea?

seriously ... how high were they? Lol, well I guess not knowing where your opponent is will do this too you ... just feels like they are both a lot better than this in quality and decision making.

CatZ is a Zerg player. Do you really think you can measure up to his knowledge of the match-up ?

Of course not. I wasn't aware that it was Catz who casted when I wrote that post though. I was just surprised at how many times they said that the game was over, but it kept going on for almost 40 minutes. If anything they could have said that DF/Lalush was behind instead of "He is going to lose now because..."
It might just be me misunderstanding what Catz said though.

I think it was more that there were times when both players should have lost but their opponent messed up and it reset the game.

The game was over numerous times from a caster perspective because the advantage from either player was too big had they realized it. They didn't and thus allowed the game to continue by making bad decisions or good decisions to even up the game.
Is it possible to move up the matches for the next time? Living in Denmark it is now 1 AM and we have only started the finals now. I can't watch the finals to the end due to work tomorrow. I realise it is impossible to make it watchable for everyone, but I kinda expected the EU qualifications to cater to the EU timezones.
This is a minor complaint really and I do understand that the tourney is insanely big which can make it unavoidable with these late games. Just figured I would mention it so it could be considered.

It has to be convenient for the players first of all, if you do it even earlier, no one in NA will be able to participate.
Lalush played pretty badly. He never modified the rally point of the overlords and they just floated towards the protoss army. Also, why did he defended with like 3 drones at a moment? Llewellys has insinuated several times that Millenium could drop Lalush if he didn't showed better results. I guess he should as he adds almost nothing to their roster.

I find this comment quite unfair. Lalush may have a bad reputation, but he is a great player and he has a very good and deep undertanding of the game (go dig some threads here on TL). Regarding the results comment, this seems like a bad timing to criticize.

Good job to Daisy Surprised with LaLush More surprised to see Fenix Also congrats to the group of players I have never heard of before. Always good to see new names.

seems like its a combination of him being sleepy and a very slight negative bias to non-french M players.

It's more that we never hear of LaLush from Millenium, I can't remember the last time they interviewed him or something, we don't see him often in lans, and since he is known for his BM some people dislike him.
Not to sound racist, but a Korean wins in an NA/EU qualifier? Granted, Daisy isn't a very well-known player and I have a ton of respect for up-and-coming pro-gamers, but C'MON! Lalush deserves the seed after playing so well through this tourny. He's proven that he's one of the best that the EU has to offer.

The rules clearly say that its enough to live in europe so its okay. Lalush sure will advance with the points if he plays in the other qualifiers, so don't worry.

Well Lalush is now top of the points board =P
With 100 points, if he can even slightly perform in another qualifier, history has shown us that being runner up and doing ok in another qualifier is about all that is required to make it via points.
8 people via points from 10 qualifiers. With 100 points from the opening qualifier, Lalush is already a huge chance to make it into TSL4.

8? I thought it was 14
32 players, 3 seeds, 15 direct winners then 14 from points

Sorry, 8 from NA/EU qualifiers and 6 from KR qualifiers I believe. So 14 total, but Lalush will only have a chance at those 8.

This was kind of the only qualifier that did NOT have all the pro's in it. Tuesday after MLG, most europeans are still jetlagged/not home. Next week (dreamhacK) should be fine, Wednesday for NA so they should be able to fly back and play for that qualifier, europeans should be in europe anyway. Should be better!

Yeah because making it to the finals of a tournament filled with a ton of pros isn't a great result at all.

LaLush hasn't been considered a top European for ages now, not even Daisy really, if one goes by tournament results; it's really surprising to see the more consistent pros fall to these players. I only watched Fenix vs SjoW and LaLush vs Daisy, and both SjoW and LaLush seemed really lackluster in my opinion. Fenix is still pretty good after not playing for so long which is great :D Daisy is not bad, probably at the same level as Korean B-teamers, and just below Code A level.

In TSL3, all but one of the runner-ups qualified based on points. Odds are Lalush will make it in.
We did tweak the points awarded so second place isn't basically auto-qualification any more. That said, Lalush still does obviously have a great start.

Also keep in mind that there are 10 NA/EU qualifiers and only 8 point spots. So unless two players are both runner-ups and later winners, every second place finisher will need to fend off the other second placers, beyond just the consistent high finishers.
To the poster directly above, yes, Dimaga has served his ban.

Daisy currently lives in Berlin, so from what I understand he can particpate in NA/EU qualifers, only Koreans living in Korea aren't allowed. so people like Golden, Sleep, Violet are allowed.

So is spades banned for life (if I am reading that right)? I don't think he would ever be good enough to qualify but I am curious.
kinda shocking, i never heard of Daisy, when i left for work he was up against morrow i thought morrow would win that match. Guess i was wrong lol, congrats to Daisy, just like ThorZaiN did last tsl, someone could come out of know where and make a name for themselves in this tournament. One of the things i really like about TSL and this system they use.
Congratulations to the winner. And hoooly cow is that video of the TSL3 finals awesome. I mean, I watched it live and all, but this video gave me chills and thrills of excitement. Epic!

Yeah but how should the foreign scene support itself if only the top 5 foreigners have the chance to win money. (At MLG just the top 3 foreigners) How do you think the Korean scene would look like if they were just 10 pros instead of 200?
I mean the reason why we convinced tournaments to pay out pricemoney more equally to the top 16/32 was to establish a larger scene of pros in our countries. Like this we still just support the Koreans, that is not very susainable imo.

Maybe foreigners, like always, should not rely on easy money from tournaments because good players can't afford to come to them.
Honestly that's always how I've seen it. All sports reward good players with the most sustainable living. Not many sports can just have sustainability for hundreds of players off prize money alone.
If the Korean pro scene was 10 people instead of 200 then there wouldn't be a Korean pro scene. Their location has nothing to do with it, it's their commitment and organisation that still surpasses most, if not all, international teams.

What you say is true for people like Select and bigs, not for Violet or Daisy. Do I really need to explain the difference?
Once those Koreans are living outside Korea it's ok as long as there aren't too many of them. They don't have same conditions as living in prohouses. But if we'd get like tons of Koreans living in NA/EU and taking all the foreigner spots it might be a problem, for us, to practice even more

What you say is true for people like Select and bigs, not for Violet or Daisy. Do I really need to explain the difference?
So you don't have a solution, okay.
Of course I know the difference, some were pro-gamers in Korean houses in the past and others were not.

Lots of foreigners should make it in in the end, there's not exactly an unlimited supply of Korean players living in NA/EU that are good enough to qualify.
Yeah but how should the foreign scene support itself if only the top 5 foreigners have the chance to win money. (At MLG just the top 3 foreigners) How do you think the Korean scene would look like if they were just 10 pros instead of 200?

Artist, Phoenix, Real all moved abroad, but they're not really doing well. I don't really see what's the problem with Koreans moving abroad for a better opportunity. This sort of mentality is really harmful if we're going to get better games. Foreigners should learn to compete better so that they can keep the Koreans in Korea.

How to you expect foreigners to suddenly "learn" to compete better? That needs infrastructure, incentives for a lot of people to try really hard and a larger fanbase. But where should that come from if more and more money from small online cups like Playhem to TSL to MLG is "invested" in Korean players. Even the teams start to pick up more and more Koreans.
We are developing towards a situation where its pointless to be a wester progamer unless you are top 10 of your continent. This will make Koreans happy, free money over and over again, but this wont make SC2 big anywhere outside of Korea.
And in regard of the TSL qualifier situation. Players who have been living in EU or NA for a long time because of studying or whatever reason are of course allowed to play, but players who came over 3 month ago from a Korean progaming house because they were too bad for GSL just to farm EU/NA events should not be allowed to play.

How do only the top 5 foreigners have a chance to win money? They just ran a qualifier. I am pretty sure the top 1024 or whatever foreigners just had a chance. Just because they didn't make it doesn't mean they didn't have a chance.
So many people whining about Koreans rofl. Why not just accept that better players make for a better tournament because they produce better games and stop crying that foreigners aren't good enough? Boo hoo, someone plays more and therefore wins more. I'd rather see a winner play than hope for lower skill players to pass through (just to get wrecked by other Koreans in the actual tourney) just because they are white. Such obvious racism rofl -_- Pathetic.

Do you honestly think these koreans moved to the US/EU to be eligable to play in tournaments and win money? The majority moved to study abroad and being able to play in touranaments in EU/US is just a bonus.
Dont hate on Koreans doing a good job. Dont you remember Thorzain ? played against the best out there and he won. The underdog story is the best story. So just imagine having one foreign hope that takes it all.
Unfortunately due to numerous stream crashes and other problems (failing disk/ controller) vods are really messed up right now. We have a lot of games, just not all of them and we don't want to release something that's incomplete. Still working on it.
