Bracket for finals: http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/2012_StarCraft_II_World_Championship_Series/North_America/Nationals/USA

(This thread is all about USA Nationals Qualifiers and Invited players. If you received and accepted an invite to the finals let me know and I'll update)

The StarCraft II World Championship Series USA Nationals will be held at the MLG Spring Championship – June 8-10 at the Anaheim Convention Center

The top 16 players from the USA Nationals will qualify for the Starcraft II North America Finals which will be held at the MLG Summer Championship – August 24-26, (Raleigh NC) 32 players from the StarCraft II World Championship Series–Canada Nationals, USA Nationals, and Mexico Nationals–will compete in a Best-of-3 games, double elimination tournament for $30k in prizing. The top players from the StarCraft II North America Finals will receive invitations to compete in the Battle.net World Championship in Asia later this year.

Some players have received emails with a direct invite to the USA Nationals which will be happening in June during the MLG Spring Championship, 8 players will be decided through a CSL qualification tournament strictly for CSL players and for the rest of USA players qualifying will be done through the following open qualifiers starting TOMORROW.

How this will work with players who could possibly (definitely?) be playing in both MLG Spring Championship open bracket and the USA Nationals will be interesting...Also there is a seemingly big lack of information including rules, map pools and other stuff. Looks like there's a WCS set of maps the qualifiers will be using. I assume these maps will also be used in the finals.

as far as I know invites have been sent to select players, I think a deadline of April 24th was given for them to respond/accept. Once that happens we'll probably have a list. Rest of the spots will be filled through these qualifiers.

I wonder if blizz sent out 54 invites and only want to take 8 from opens?

Looks like 64 players in the final event, kinda sucky to get 2nd in a 512 man tournament and get nothing for it...

edit: also who the hell is intense lol.

You owe an answer to nobody. It is a tournament with high stakes, handle your business and do what you need to within the given rules(which it appears you did).

Good luck.

Well tbh I meant more of local leagues. I mean everytime Koreans own foreigners badly people talk about needing local leagues to cultivate local talent. This is exactly that and ...people don't watch.

I guess by foreigners they mean the old boys club.

Sad thing is that I am one of those who doesn't care about Koreans being the dominant ones

do the players that qualify get paid flight/accommodation? Or will they have to find their own way to Anaheim?

This has been causing some confusion for the first few rounds of each Playhem so far. The maps being used are the Blizzard ladder ones.

Beyond Gaming may need to be relieved of their WCS duties :\

Their tournament system is a bit taxing.

the way this tournament is being run goes beyond anything I've ever seen before

admins are doing a good job though and responding to things very quickly. but the format/rules seem sketch.

whats wrong with the format? 2 tournies bo3's bo7 final, clearly heavily favors the most skilled player. playhems bo1 system was a huge stretch, in sc1 i could see it but sc2 just isn't that kind of game. lots of poker at work in sc2.

It seems really silly to make the finals of one event the following day, coinciding with qualifiers.

Finals for each qualifier should just have been at the end of that same day...

Yup agreed. That is one of the reasons I am not playing in it (not saying I would make finals but since it's only NA players much better chance ) is the fact that even if I make the finals, I would have to forfeit it as I work all weekend so no point playing in monday qualifiers that the finals are on that sunday/saturday can't remember which
When I think of something else, something will go here

I love how the tournament admins are very attentive and professional, and how the tournament is set up.

However, I do not like how we have to wait for 1 round to complete before moving onto the next one, along with the map selection system. Having 1 player select 2 maps in a bo3 is just not fair to the other player.

Thanks for setting up this thread Rob! I'm really interested in seeing on the NA scene does. There are a couple players from the playhem qualifiers that I don't know much about and really look forward seeing how they match up against some of the more well known players.

Also HelloKitty and Area51Sasquatch won for the Beyond Gaming Qualifier Tuesday and Wednesday ^_^

Everize has been DQ'd from this because he apparently does not have U.S citizenship.

vGAnfield who finished 2nd to him in the playhem event will be replacing him.

Seems a bit unfair to those who lost to Everize.

At least they should have let YaTa play Anfield for the qualifying spot...

Wow, interesting players so far. Did Illusion, Idra and the other more known US players not even try to qualify or did they just fail?

There's 15000 $ on the line. And the chance to represent your country at the World Championship Final.

I'm so confused abut this tournament .... The winners of these online tournaments get spots at the tournament being hosted by MLG, and the top couple of players there are then representing USA in the WCS finals? Is that right?

That seems correct MCDayC

Its said that at MLG Anaheim it will be a 64 man event for the WCS USA National Final, top16 of those go to the continental North America Finals tournament , with adding in at least Canada and Mexico players.
So far there been 26 spots given away by those qualifier tournaments.
The rest may be invites based on ladder standing and/or prestigious national tournaments like MLG/NASL/IPL/CSL(?) (i.e. Germany gave 4 qualifier spots to the top players from the EPS). Or there may be more qualifiers, only Blizzard knows.

Those 3 beyond gaming spots, were they earned by tournaments? didn't know BoX was still active, surprised those 3 would of won spots.

No hes not, the rules/admin are at fault. But the player should in no way be responsible for taking the win even tho he did not deserver it, if it falls within the rules. I understand you are pissed, but hes just following the rules(Which also why players should have no say in admin rulling really). You were basicly asking him to turn down a guaranteed spot to the nationals just for the sake of good sportmanship?

Although it is unfortunate that Specialist didn't call for the regame, I think it's a bit much to ask of him in that situation. He was just about to lose a game, and what was probably running through his head was that he might lose the next game and then lose the entire qualifier and trip to MLG. I think the admins definitely should have allowed a regame AT THE VERY LEAST, and if it was 3 CCs to 1 CC then it is even arguable for you to just get the win . . .

Edit: If Specialist had offered to regame that would be a tremendous display of good sportsmanship and would be extremely admirable. I could see some players doing this. But in this situation I don't think it was necessarily completely wrong that he didn't offer a regame, he was being selfish but it is understandable.

I agree with you guys but that doesn't make me any less frustrated/pissed at both the rules for being sketch and specialist who I considered my friend before the games.

specialist is pretty bm and an extremely cheesy player. take pleasure in knowing he will get nowhere in that tournament.

So a playhem manager contacted me today apologizing and saying the ruling was actually incorrect and it should have been a regame. can't go back now but to compensate for it Playhem is paying for my MLG trip. Playhem is really an amazing organization, total class act by them.

Also he said admins will be better directed how to handle semifinals/finals so situations like this won't happen in the future.

It's probably cause your GPU is unstable. I have success with running GPU at below stock speeds. Even though my gpu runs fine on any other game even if it's overclocked.

IMO, specialist should not be the one making a decision. There is a clear conflict of interest. Prize vs. sportsmanship/friendship. The admins should be making this decision.

(I don't know if posting this will be of any use to my benefit, actually I might just get flamed even more, but just wanted to say a few words)

You guys keep saying good sportsmanship and I understand that I have basically lost on the game 2.
But if you guys were on my shoes, would you have done a regame?
I have tried to qualify since the very first qualifier. On the first qualifier, I lost to everize who is actually a polish citizen.
In addition, I have played more players that are not even American citizen, like chobittsu.
Furthermore, I have been to finals twice before this, meeting mystik and perfect, and making them qualify for the spots.
Literally hundreds of hours spent on this qualifier, and I was so close. I just could not risky the possibility of losing in the another finals.
Besides, I didn't know I had the right to regame. I thought disconnect after certain period of time means auto-loss.
I understand if I were in a luckyfool's position, I would be really pissed as well and would also try to make a big fuss about it too.
(But let's say if I tried to complain, nobody would have given me any notice anyways because I'm not luckyfool or anybody that is known.)
I apologize to luckyfool for shit happening but I really didn't know I had right to make a decision whether to get a free win or regame. But I would have just gotten a free win anyways even if I knew.
Given all things considered, I just had to be smart and make a right decision, even if I was up 1-0 and had 2 chances to beat him, I just wanted to get the spot.
This one-sidedness of saying I'm a f@g, etc is really disturbing because I'm not the favorite.

gj Siphonn.

Xenocider came close to making it many times, Yata came close to making it many times, Gimix came close. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting that didn't make it after playing in dozens of qualifiers. Hell I came within 1 mismicroed banshee of making it.

was pretty fun playing in these qualifiers, I actually improved alot by playing in all of these and was motivated to practicing more.

Haha yeah, and whoa didn't know you left FG! Well good opportunity to make a showing at MLG and get noticed by new teams though ^^

And Rob I agree, I think they were very good motivation and I hope to see them in the future too! Btw you should include the liquipedia link in the op I think, would be convenient!

Most of the good players left (Me, Future, Hummingbird), we weren't necessarily happy with how things were going, even though we were pretty solid and could manage to snag some games off good teams. Thank you too :D

I qualified on May 6th.

I got an email on May 12th from the MLG Production Manager, Jon Curran.

Email basically said this:

Hello Players/Managers!

I will be taking care of travel for the US Nationals event in Anaheim on the weekend of June 8th.

You will be provided with hotel accommodations and travel. Please get the following information to me as soon as possible.

1. Full name as it appears on passport

2. Date of birth

3. Airport

4. Time and date preferences for travel

I replied on May 15th, no response back yet, but I'm not to worried to be honest. Should be getting an email in couple of days I think.

EDIT: Just got flight information today.

Considering Im a minor and im going to have someone flying with me, its gonna cost a lot of money to try to book a flight on such short notice for the other person :[. I don't want to pick an airport that doesn't have availability for the same flight or similar departure arrival times. I guess ill call their number and see what can be done.

I got my flight info today and my father booked the same flight for <500$ from Newark to SNA, so that's pretty good. Hope you get it soon though :p

Boyo you're 12 right? Or 14? Either way if your parents can't end up getting a ticket try to convince them you'll be fine. It's a domestic flight and you're old enough to do it, plus it'll be a good learning experience ^^ I flew to China by myself when I was 14 as well. My parents found some people at the airport on the same flight to help watch over me, so that's an option as well!

This tournament could've been so good for the American scene in general and a great chance for players to show their skill and finally dethrone players like Incontrol, Machine, Nony etc, if it wasn't on the same day as MLG.

Now noone will even watch it or care about it.

Fantastic stuff. The fricken WORLD will be watching you yanks.

I can't wait for this, even as a Canadian. I have a feeling there is A LOT of talent in the states that has gone un noticed so far.

edit: also who the hell is intense lol.

Intense used to be on aiR, he then went to Decerto and finally ended up on LG. He's only 14 I believe (maybe 16), he's Terran and quite a powerhouse.

to be honest they will do only 11/127 matches on stream and skip the first 3 rounds due to time restrictions.
I had hoped for more exposure there T.T.

Actually, MLG putting it on one of their two free streams will get this tournament more viewers.

Seems like MLG writers struggle to copy paste

Looks like the best that NA has will be happy about being streamed to the world. At the expense of airing the early rounds/unkown players though.

I don't think that's the wrong decision though. Being aired similar to any other MLG pro game will be an honor

lmfao if Zack is HRGZack blizzard is a joke

Also tbh how did Shew get an invite through ladder? He's never been THAT high up on ladder, I don't think he's even been in GM a single season. Not trying to say he's a bad player, but why "ladder" as qualification?

If it's a hacker everyone should keep quiet about it. If they lose, oh well, if they do well, then make a big fuss so Blizzard can see how stupid they are first hand.

No, they should not get a flight and a spot to the tournament in the first place. We cannot tolerate this, as shit like this gnaws at the very integrity of the competition. If this person is truly a hacker who used hacks to get the spot, is a sham and an utter mockery of the entire tournament, and it is a direct insult to us the viewers, and the other competitors who worked hard legitimately to get a spot. I do not know if the guy is a hacker, and I am not the most certified to give my opinion on this particular case, but I believe that all hackers who are cheating in tournaments need to be dealt with severely.

There are plenty of evidence of HRGzack hacking in this thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=340614

However, it is still unclear if zack = HRGzack... although it seems highly likely... I would hope it's not the case

HRG's manager and I have talked. I've talked with HRGZack recently because HRG was looking for another player. He told me he got the invite/trip. I'm not sure if he "just had a feeling" because those things can happen. I'd love more replays on this subject because this would detrimentally affect HRG and of course Zack.

So yes, HRGZack = Zack

This is astounding at so many levels.
First, how could blizzard invite HRGZack in the first place. This is such a joke of an invite that they are basically saying "we're incompetent and this is THE proof...we will invite a hacker to diversify the pool and represent the ladder correctly???? (I guess in USA ladder 2 out of 64 people hack approximately??, confused)"
Second, how could HRGZack, even if he got the invite, has audacity to ACCEPT the invite, given fully aware that he's been hacking on ladder...

Given your assessment that HRGZack = Zack, I am utterly disappointed in how blizzard's stance against hacking but at the same time, I am amused to think that I will see Zack in WCS.

Funny how Blizzard resets the GameOfDrone account's ladder games/rank but they didn't realize he was the same person as HRGZack when they gave him the invite for his ladder status.

You can just search on TL and all the posts in that thread with his name are highlighted-
HRGZack search results TL

For those who didnt see the replay on Taldarim he basically made 5 blind cannons to defend a roach ling all in two bases without scouting a gas from zerg or ling speed or anything really... And he scouted opponents position first on the map.

mmm, okay. Lot of people saying he hacks. I don't get what I'm supposed to be looking at for the sc2gears images though. Is it showing that those players all keybind at the same time and in the same way? I'm assuming those images are legitimate proof?

Most of WCS will be played on Friday. Here's the schedule

http://www.majorleaguegaming.com/competitions/36#event_91_event-schedule-for-competitors-and-live-spectators

The bracket is not out, but they did randomly seed us already. From the seeding, people have theorized the bracket, but we won't officially know until we are there.

OK. So Idra may be facing Spades! And the winner may face Zack in the next round! Oh boy!

Spades vs Zack would be so sick.

Might need to set up a barricade around where they're playing, to keep the pitchforks out and all.

I've confirmed HRGzack is hacking through replay analysis.

I recorded some videos through fraps and will be uploading them to youtube whenever they are done compiling.

I say confirmed because I am 100% certain after watching that replay. If you want to know why I said 100%--- besides suspicious movements, poor scouting, etc. well, let's just say he was blinking units back while having all stalkers selected. I'm also pretty sure having 550 EPM during fights is also nearly impossible even for the highest of levels progamers.

Wow I just realized Vibe beat IdrA and made it through.. nice! I'm hoping him or Nony can win this. I'm surprised Vibe is doing so well with all the D3 he has been playing too. XD

Also Mystik continues to play quite well. He is quite underrated from what I've seen of him.

Essentially no one pronounces "Noony," so there's kinda no way to know it except from older interviews where it's been brought up.

I've always been kinda mystified why Tyler pronounces it "Noony" since it it doesn't make any phonetic sense for "Nony" to be pronounced that way. At least the eye-dra/ih-dra pronunciation disparity makes some sense.

Ranged clearly wins it. you know why? he trained in europe. lol^^

also, EG doing rly well.

IdrA losing ZvZ vs ViBe
Machine, "who apprently plays better sc2 than he ever did before", loses WBR1 1-2 to "Sasquatsch" to fall 0-2 in LBR1 later on to TriMaster.

very dissappointed with Axlav, qxc and Sheth as well honestly ./

Oh man, imagine if Fitzy wins his match and then takes out Idra in the next round. I really hope that doesn't happen, nothing against Fitzy but people would be so annoying about it after Idra had said made some comment about him on SOTG.

i enjoyed all the WCS games today, watched it over everything else primarily just to see some US players have the stage. Very suprising names ending up at the top of the brackets. Huge dissapointment from machine, incontrol, axslav, and sheth. Can't imagine those guys are very happy or confident coming out of a US only tournament without placing top 16.

I feel that the lesser known NA players have caught up in skill with all the pros. There is still a gap however to the top SC2 pros.

yea i agree that some of the guys on lesser known teams are right up there with the best of the big name NA players. You look and see Demuslim, Zenio, Haypro, and a few others going out to some of these guys in the open bracket. If they can keep improving theres no reason the US can't be a top country. I just wish there was a national Team League with country vs country. There was one in wc3 i believe and it was very entertaining. Would love to see someone organize that with some big prize money and get the best from each country together to compete as a team.

USA definitely has the talent. It's just the logic of becoming a "top sc2 player" is rather ridiculous given our culture. Most of those good NA players you see are just college kids who play in their free time. I think its pretty damn cool that a college student can take a game off JYP who supposedly has godly PvP. Plus many of those players have zero RTS experience so they've had to play catch up since release. I'm really glad they're able to compete though. The foreign scene was getting a bit stale.

Why is there 12k for the winner of this ? It's more than a DreamHack and the players are so much weaker !

I mean, I'm really looking for a reason for that much cash prize. I don't understand. It would seem ok for the winner of the final tournament (Battle.net world championship), I'm just confused.

Maybe it's because Blizz can give out as much prize money as they desire?

Because it's for NA players only and Blizzard can give out as much cash as they fucking want?

Wow vibe! Loving the results of this so far. Hope people will finally start to think of players like Vibe, Ranged, Insur etc when talking about the best US players instead of Incontrol, Machine, etc.

I hope Ranged can even get top 3, but it will be hard with Illusion on the same side of the bracket.

ViBE maybe. He's been around a long time.

Edit: I think I misinterpreted you. In which case, yes, people do mention iNcontroL and Machine. I don't know that anyone puts them in the top three, which probably has to be Idra, Sheth and Illusion in some order, but after that, it seems pretty reasonable to think about players like Machine, iNcontroL, LzGaMeR, ViBE, Goswser, qxc and others as a group, some distance behind Sheth and co, but some way ahead of Hawk, Perfect, giX, YaTa or similar; guys who are clearly skilled players but lack either results or pedigree.

Atleast, i got one prediction correct that insur got to the winner's finals. He was my one "upset" getting to the finals
but my other brackets didn't work out at all haha.

Even with that walkover, that run by Idra in the loser's is pretty amazing...

2-0's Kawaii
2-0's Fitzy
2-0's Perfect
2-0's Illusion

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come in MLG where he's starting off against Axslav and then JYP...

The one where IdrA seemingly can't win a series to save his life. Kawaii and Illusion have been playing very well it would seem.

Post above me, basically. IdrA's been incapable of winning anything, really, and then he pops out and not just wins these series, but 2-0's all four of these players. I'm not saying "OMG IDRA IS BACK!!11!!!1!", but it's still a pretty nice run through the loser's bracket. Illusion is a pretty good player, so is Perfect. Fitzy's new on ROOT, and from watching ROOT in its first incarnation, when Catz recruits players to his team it's for a good reason. And then Kawaii goes back and forth, either surprisingly good, or not so much.

Regardless, a player going from can't-win to an 8-win streak through four players with 2 solidly good players,1 up-and-coming guy, and 1 player who swings back and forth? It's a pretty amazing run.

And his micro is ugly.

His opponent had at least 7 infestors, that's enough to even out the numbers since a large portion of Idras army would not be fighting and taking damage.

I meant engage when he still had them, he tried back off and pathing screwed him over. Stupid really. He would have won in a full fight with his festors.

I just tuned in to see the last half minute of that match. Was it a premature GG by Idra? I did not have time to look at things like upgrades/bases and supply.

He lost all his Infestors, if it had happened near Daisuke's base then maybe he would have time, but it happened mid-field, left him no real chance to get back into it.

He lost all of his infestors right before that for free.

It was premature but not unreasonable. After all Daisuki could have decided to sit back and do nothing after that engagement; no progamer would assume that though. It's not even like the fight occurred in Daisuki's base.

na, thats the kind of shit that makes people hate SC2. If your army is 30 supply bigger than your opponents, losing it to 1 f key isn't "epic" or skill.

Those were not hard fungals. Daisuki was in the worst possible position ever with possibly one of the crummiest ZvZ compositions ever.

Yeah, Daisuki's control was so sloppy. I guess detonating banes on queens is a good choice.

Once he lost the queens he didn't have much to block it anymore. Roaches would have been able to withstand more baneling hits.

Only in good spread. Roaches tend to clump up and can be easily soften by banes to be killed by lings. I doubt he had time to control everything perfectly. Its hard as hell to withstand 1-base ling/bane all-in.

And he lost his queens because they were in the wrong position. They were not blocking the ramp at all. You don't need roaches to hold off 14/14 baneling all-in, you do need to play smart.

killiing both queens was a good choice, whether the detonation changed that battle or not can't be seen though. He had an chance to detonate on two queens though and took it.

That's actually very cool when you think about it though. Maybe it means the NA scene is gonna get some sick new blood to carry the torch.
i was driving down the road this november eve and spotted a hitchhiker walking down the street. i pulled over and saw that it was only a tree. i uprooted it and put it in my trunk. do trees like marshmallow peeps? cause that's all i have and will have.

Because the BIG NAME American players are no longer the best American players, and haven't been for a while. This is what happens when you value celebrity over skill. We need less invite only shit and more open tournaments to show this. Some of America's best are not even on a fucking team.

He was a staple player from sixjax. But aside from him, only NonY and IdrA are former top NA. The rest is upcoming who confirms (Illusion, State, Gowser, Perfect, theognis, Ranged and Hawk) or more unknown players (Suppy, daisuki, Mystik, HelloKitty, Insur, fitzyhere).

The NA is still weaker than the EU one by far but these new guys are the lifeline of SC2. Should they all fail in the long run, it would be disastrous for everyone else.

This tournament is ideal to showcase some new talent. Players can BECOME a big name by delivering here and similar tournaments. Scarlet became a name when she did well at IPL4.

I think this tournament really shows a problem with the NA scene. Half of those who make it into the NA Finals made it from a qualifier. The large problem with the NA scene is a combination of mid-tier koreans winning what should be the minor tournaments for NA (Playhem, etc) and the old boys club that SC2 is in NA. The big name SC2 players for NA are pretty much all former BW players.

There is no really good way for lower NA players to rise up. There needs to be more qualifiers, less invites in tournaments. There needs to be more NA only tournaments like WCS is. This would help to really make the NA scene more interesting.

You have to fault the big sc2 teams in NA scene valuing popularity over skill. No wonder the NA scene is in such schambles. It is just not worth it to be good. Destiny makes more money sitting at home flaming daisuki on reddit.

Been really disappointed with some NA players after watching this event. Many known players played really lackluster and lost to more unknown players either by getting cheesed or making mistakes in their games.

Since all the WCS top3 are out fo the MLg in early loser rounds.. it will be wise for Raleigh to concentrate on one tournament only for those who qualified.

OR, for MLG to find another solution instead of parallel tournaments that last for 12-14 hours a day.
Should be easie with a 32 man double elimination bracket.. just have them play Friday, LB/WB/Grand finals on sunday.. and seed them into Open Bracket on early Saturday if they wish.

I think a big problem is that the big NA based teams tend to only pick up well known names. They don't really develop tallent in the same way Korean teams or even some Euro teams do.

Sounds like a reason for you to support the lesser teams who DO support the upcoming players like the one's that did well in WCS.

Overall this been a good success in this way:
The WCS qualificants have practiced lots harder for this weekend than before and imo it shows.

Effect was that some of them really made good runs in the MLG and WCS
Another effect shows that the are pretty even skillwise. There is not one player standing out, everyone can beat everyone else it seems pretty much.
For the scene thats probably good, for the typical american hype its not good - the fanbois want stars.

actually complexity supports unknown players and try to bring them to light with their col academy. They do have bigger names, but they still invest a lot on "breeding new talent"

imo having both events together is really bad for players who are doing well in both events. Anyone who had a deep run in WCS and also won a couple rounds of MLG were being called to a match while they're in the middle of another match. Makes it hard to focus purely on one event and probably effected some players play.

Talked to a few players about it, hopefully the Raleigh schedule is better but I doubt it. So much to cram into such little time doesn't leave many options.

When you say "Raleigh" you just mean the NA WCS tournament right? Like the one that the top 16 from Anaheim will go to?

Yes I was referring to the MLG/NA WCS finals schedule at Raleigh.

Hopefully with just a 32 man event it isn't as bad. I can see why MLG went with a reduced open bracket in Anaheim. Was already really rough Friday and early Saturday.

There are a lot of NA players who are improving at such a quick rate, nobody realizes it except the players who play them consistently. Couple of those players are snixsnipe, xsixpanther, alkresh, etc...

In my opinion, the opportunity to show the devlopment is close to none unless you upset a big name at MLG (goswser) or Dreamhack, but it happens a lot on ladder/small tournaments. I'm not saying that makes the player better than someone else, but it shows the improvement that is being made.

I personally had an eye opening experience playing in two tournaments and the endurance necessary to keep up playing for 10 hours straight. I'm going to have to work on playing more and longer and eat right to just perform well and i think that took place in MLG where so many upsets happened. It was actually mind blowing. but good experience.

supposedly the times of day2 games got changed early day 1. Ranged says that he was not informed of this (the only player not to be informed apparently) and so he showed up an hour late.

Making a post to remove all speculation on what happened..
So basically on friday night the games lasted until like after midnight if I recall. The schedule was super hectic all day, looking back I feel like NonY had the right idea by choosing only one event, because it was very hard playing both WCS and MLG.

Before I left I saw on the board it was written "WCS starts again tomorrow @ 10 am." But since I was all the way at LR8, there were at least a couple of matches that needed to be played before I would actually have an opponent. I went through the player area to the mic, and asked them specifically what time I should be there for my match in the morning. I don't know which admin it was, but they told me to be there by 11 am.

So yeah, I went and got some food, went back to the hotel, slept, woke up, and arrived back at MLG a little after 10:20 am to hear that IdrA had got the free win. I asked them if the game could be played then (20-30 minutes after walkover had been given) but they wouldn't allow it. Pretty upsetting; not much else to really say.

In the end its basically just a painful learning experience for me..

Just another case of ref the night before not really knowing and telling the wrong time.

Happened to Catz and Pokebunny at MLG Columbus last year. Games go super late on Friday and they ask ref when to show up next morning, the ref tells a time which is completely wrong. In general scheduling stuff is pretty good and MLG refs are fairly helpful but I think to be safe players should ask multiple people not just one guy at the mic desk.

Bad luck man, you did amazing. I know it won't matter because the result stands but i would kick up a shit-tonne of fuss about that if an admin/ref told you a time then it was not so.....i would be severely pissed

Sigh. These kinds of cases are just stupid. Like if the admin doesn't know the correct time then he should just go find someone who does know the correct time instead of making up a time and fucking over the players.

That quote from ranged reminded me of something. So just for the record here is EG statement last time Ostojiyi got a 1 map walkover against puma:

"I dont think EG, or any other proteam would willingly give up an advantage like that in such an important match."

Sorry, but I just don't agree with this at all. It's just not true. The larger proteams, who have positive management relationships with each other, very rarely, if ever, force forfeits. If Scott from It's Gosu had been present at the event, I seriously doubt this would've happened. We have a great relationship with him and generally, management from different teams look out for each other.

One thing we in the EG camp are wondering is, why did WBC wait until after the first map had already been forfeited to go and get Puma? Everyone knew that we were scrambling around, searching for him (because we legitimately didn't know where he'd gone), and then WBC went and found him right away. I think it's fair to ask if WBC knew where he was the entire time, or just happened to find him after the first map was forfeited. It's an unpleasant but fair question.

and on the question "don't tell me that you wouldn't want your player take an advantage like that in such an important match."

Seriously? We've never done this to an opposing team's player in an MLG. If anything, the more significant the match, the worse it is to force a forfeit. Like I've mentioned in other posts, large proteams very rarely, if ever, force forfeits. Consider your own team manager's dispute with Check-Six/ESEA in last season's finals. He was so upset because generally, everyone tries to avoid forfeits at all costs and puts forth a good faith effort to play.

I don't think that following the tournament's rules to the letter of the book is mutually exclusive with behaving in an unsportsmanlike fashion. In certain situations, such as this one, they are one and the same. Especially since everyone (MLG admins, my management reps, other people on site) is confirming the same story: that you were basically looking at the clock counting down the seconds until you got a free map.

Bottom line: if Scott had been at the event, he wouldn't have allowed you to do this.

I agree with this as well, however it also was apparent that MLG was not prepared to run two tournaments at once considering how unorganized the events both were. Players were scrambling to stations and having their names called for one tournament when they were in the middle of a series from the other tournament. A simple resolution to something such as this is to find a better way to keep the players posted. All that needs to be done is to attach a phone number to each Players MLG account and if they aren't there 5 minutes after the match starts, give them a call. From the time of the call give them another 10 minutes or so and then there's no one at fault other than the player's. Sadly such a miss-communication can be very detrimental to a player when they have potential to advanced a bit further into a tournament. This definitely is not the first time this has happened, as it even happened to White-Ra who flew from what, Ukraine?

Oh gods...I'm sorry to hear that's what happened bro. Hang in there. I look forward to seeing you make another run at another tournament. It was truly impressive.

Hopefully, one day someone comes up with a organizational system for these events that can prevent this kind of error.
