Format
This double-elimination tournament features 16 teams from around the world and is an All-Kill team format. This match is being played for Winners Round 2. The first team to defeat everyone on the opposing team's roster (5 wins, or a best of 9), will move on in the Winners Bracket, while the loser will drop down into the Losers Bracket. Keep in mind that this has a $20,000 prize pool, and only six teams will make it to the money!

Actually I hope liquid loses so we can see a liquid eg matchup. I know it sounds mean but liquid eg matches are so fun to watch, I just can't help myself

Well. It seems, that Byun will play again in tournaments (as he did in IPL TAC qualifier and marineking mentioned him recently to make a big impact in 2012), so there will be another very strong player, that may come up for prime. They rely a lot on their aces, that's very true, with Creator doing a lot of the work lately. But this kid is just insane, so no prob in this way. BUT, the biggest issue for liquid may be the lack of terran talent. With BBongBBong being an insanely good ZvP and ZvZ player, he is also very likely to do an allkill, if TL somehow manages to go through marineking and other prime players very fast. I think this is just a very unlucky matchup for TL, but we'll see, surprises happen a lot lately.
PS. With marineking losing to Losira and DRG most recently, it seems at least against those very top zerg players, his TvZ is a little bit off the line. Maybe a chance for sheth?

MKP is a great opener because Liquid only have one Terran and Jinro is unlikely to beat MKP. Plus Liquid's best player in Hero who is weakest vs Terran.
I love prime using MKP as an opener. Works really well and particularly against Liquid which is zerg heavy it's a good choice. The only bad thing about it is that it might make Prime more predictable. Let's hope not.
Yes! Great that Prime sends out their big guns, Liquid already got super lucky in the last match against coLMVP. It's time they have to work hard in order to advance.

I rarely consider the major Korean teams anything other than heavy favorites (unless they are playing other major Korean teams), simply because they have quality and quantity. They have the best players, and many of them. That's the problem of foreign teams: Many have a few very strong players, maybe even able to hold with the top Koreans, but they drop off in depth very quickly after that. Liquid has a pretty deep team by foreigner standards, but definitely not up to the level of depth that Prime has (MKP, Creator, Byun, BBoongBBoong, Anneong, the list goes on).
I would be happy with either team winning. If Liquid wins, that would be huge, but if they lose, they go on to face EG for a high-stakes elimination match.
I think HerO was expecting it to be a really long macro game without a real engagement until they were both maxed. That's why he chose to cut corners and tech into both colossus and high templar without getting upgrades until they were both out. Of course MKP decided to attack and HerO couldn't hold.

I like last years PL format, but this years one is nothing short of terrible. Not having an ace match is really bad, the final game if it is 2-2 is bad players, it'll never be a true, best player on 1 team vs best player on the other team ace match.
Zenio such a disappointment. When I first heard of them picking him up I had a feeling it wasn't going to turn out well.
Really hope he can start performing well again and that being on a cushy foreign team hasn't made him complacent.

Hero played brilliantly that build was great, that drop was great. But he should have just sacked his natural that was getting dropped and pulled back soon as he saw the main army pushing in. Lose a base but save the game.... oh well. Still a fun game.
But Zenio's games have rarely been fun hence my dissatisfaction.

MKP is just too strong against Zergs, he took out Sheth and Zenio with ease, no way TLO will win...I'd rather see Jinro and Ret play, but I guess Ret was at IEM when the games were played.
Another Zerg for MKP to munch on? I would have thought that Jinro (he's in decent form right?) would have been a much better choice, Jinro's got tasty TvT, whereas it's MKP's worst matchup.
You know what would be cool with this mass ling style...zergling drops on tanks and baneling drops with the main attack on the rines. Wonder if that would work.
Dammit, give TLO some credit. That hatchery was below 30% health, he used the drones to slow down MKPs units until TLO could bring in his reinforcements and save it. It was an awesome move!

SCV kills are great but MKP is sitting on four orbitals and can probably keep up a good enough economy with only MULEs. At the same time, TLO's attacks are mostly costing him his entire army, and one poor engagement could open the door for MKP to counter hard before he can remax.

he's wearing down the army, it should work. he has some questionable army control though

I'm just worried for him. I've seen so many TvZ games where Zerg seems to hold the advantage, and then one bad engagement and good counter smashes the Zerg main.

That was such an awesome game. TLO vs. MKP....so so good. TLO with control of that game from start to finish, never letting MKP apply pressure or really even establish a solid footing.

Proleague has gone with a bo5 format for nearly ten years. Last year was an exception. They changed it to a double blind pick after the Savior fiasco, but there used to be announced lineups like the NASTL does now.
In any case, Bo5 is superior for BW. Bo7 is just too long and is too taxing on the teams. Bo7 is probably better for SC2 since the games are shorter, though.
Probably got too giddy by being close to beating mkp to do things perfectly, but he really should have tkane the gases at his extra bases earlier. His ultras hit about 10 minutes after he built the cavern. On the other hand, tlo managed to apply pressure the whole game and traded reasonably well. Nice timing as well, maybe a bit lucky that mkp got a very late stim.
Poor analysis by Doa. TLO had a very low drone count for the whole game and if not for his early pressure doing so much damage, he would have lost badly. I just find it hilarious they talk of remaxing when TLO has 0 minerals and 110 supply. Its as though they don't understand the fundamentals of zerg play at all.
TLO always one of my top favorite players since BETA. Mostly from his zerg play. I feel like switching to terran was a huge mistake. But since he switched to zerg I've been watching his stream religiously and now watching all that training culminate to a win over MKP is so great to see. SO happy for you Dario, can't wait to see your enemies cower before your incredible micro throughout 2012.

tlo has a way of always showing a game of this caliber just when i'm about to expect him no more being able to. it was a bit drawn out due to his shortcomings in macro. i believe he could have pressed his economical advantage slightly more at times instead of focusing 100% aggression, especially since i'd consider it an "easier" and less volatile approach - but what do i know. this was much more fun to watch though. great set, hwaiting

he wouldnt have been able to do that much damage if hed been making drones instead of zerglings.
he doesnt need to "remax" when MKP is at 70 food and he's at 110, he just has to keep applying pressure to keep MKP's food low. i dont think MKP got above 140 food at any point in that game. "remax" was a bad choice of words by the casters but what they meant was keeping far enough ahead to keep killing 90% of MKPs army over and over again.

Is it out of the realms of possibility that TLO has studied MKP and realised he might be weak to that attack? Maybe the map played a factor?
TLO doesn't just pick a random insane strat and execute, he makes smart decisions that few other players make, backed by really solid mechanics and game sense.
That game was a perfect example. Well microed (i.e. split at beginning and then grab small groups of lings to target down tanks) along with solid fundamentals (hitting every inject so he could keep up the swarm, having the right amount of drones to support it).
Final comment: "Heck, if marineking just went mass marines, TLO would have got rolled."
You think if TLO had seen mass marine or a tell for mass marine, he'd still have done it? If he'd seen a well prepared wallin he'd have amoved lings into it?

It's not very crisp, tbh. Not sure what's happening, but sometimes he just runs his marines back to the tanks instead of splitting them, where I felt that splitting them would be by far the better option.There was also moments where he didn't react as fast and some of his units got trapped. Just my 2 cents

You say smashed, when you could have just said beat. There's variance in SC2, and an opponent you can beat one day you may very well lose to the next day. Openers and small decisions and control all have a big impact and there's a reason that you can play the percentages in gambling. In any case, the ling+infestor style certainly is viable, although I would agree that being predictable is very dangerous in SC2

TL definitely one of the deeper teams around and they keep their training semi under the radar... it seems like any TL player can step up and put together a string of impressive games

I agree that BboongBboong is the obvious choice, but Jinro hasn't played yet, so they may use him instead of Ret if TLO beats classic but loses to him.

I'm trying to decide if TLO is trying to meta-game by going for mutalisks after he scouted by assuming that the protoss will halt phoenix production due to it being scouted. Or if he just doesn't know what to do from here lol

1) Your meta-gaming Marine kings style in the game was genius. Splliting up the lings for maximum exposure was an excellent execution that we don't see enough in sc2. 2) That part where you used the burrowed infestors ahead of time to spit out infested terrans for the first volley of tank shots was BRILLIANT. Cannot stress enough how good of a move that was.

He was definately not doing that to be BM. If he doesn't split his stalkers then he loses a bunch of then, but if he does split them mutas and lings becomes way more efficient.
It's not really something you want to do unless you are way ahead because of how much gas it costs, but it is certainly effective.
hmm I've seen Byun play against HerO a few times on ladder. He was extremely aggressive and just kept hammering HerO relentlessly... it looked extremely uncomfortable to do with. Ret is on fire though!

Those were the only games I saw >.< except for the last TLO one and the Ret one
Byun building up a good amount of siege tanks. Ret gonna need to be careful when he engages. Although, Byun helped him out by moving out without the tanks.
Holy shit Byun is so solid. Bad donation by Ret, but Ret was so far ahead and Byun managed to stabilize on 4 base before that muta donation and get into a decent position going into the late game--few terrans can do the same.
Wow Ret seriously.... Throwing this away after that?! This makes me sad, Byun did well but there's no way he did something "Special" to get back into this!
Must be so frustrating losing those Mutas like that. He could have really used them in that first battle with the Broodlords vs. the Vikings. GGs! Awesome series!
Ret was just impatient when he threw away his army at the 4th. Didn't choose a good engage, etc. Shame, too, since he did a great job fending off the cheese and building his advantage. I think if he'd gotten a quicker lair (which he could have easily afforded like 2-5 min before he upgraded it) he'd have been okay. As-is, there were vikings on the way out before greater spire even started.
To be honest, I think Ret should have prepared Ultras as a tech switch. Changing gears into Ultras after seeing the 15+ Vikings out would have done him well.

Can't help but wonder what would have happened if TLO had taken out MKP earlier and HerO and Zenio were still up. I think MKP is the only player that's on the same level as them.

Nah man, he was fine 'till the mutalisks. Without mutalisks, Byun wouldn't have gotten up such high viking numbers, then Ret wouldn't have lost all those broodlords, and then lost that expo

That's the thing about Liquid: you can't place all your hopes on any one or two (or in this case three) players. Always a surprise who will do best in any given month, and Liquid will always be at the top there (foreigner wise at least)
No foreign team should feel bad going toe to toe with a Korean team and playing that well. Absolutely impeccable play from both teams, glad I watched it from start to finish.
Ret seemed really slow with his upgrades despite having a huge bank at times, could've been playing a lot tighter despite the awesome awe inspiring macro he always has.
That was a pretty painful last game, but I hope Ret doesn't take it too hard. He still won a game and played pretty well for quite awhile in that one.
TL proving it's depth here, taking Prime to 9 even after some of their usual winners (sheth, hero, and zenio) lose right off the bat. I honestly think more than half the time, Liquid would beat Prime in this format. Too bad today wasn't one of those times

It was too passive, as it is important to use the mutas for constant harassment otherwise mutas are a poor ROI, but I guess I am spoiled from watching DRG too much There were times that I felt that he could have been more aggressive, rather than let Byun macro and get back into the game. Still, I have nowhere as much skill as Ret so I cannot really say too much or be too critical. Just a great series
Despite the great showing a pretty heartbreaking loss for Liquid given how close they came. A bit more decisiveness from Ret's part on where he wanted to take the game after he got a great position vs Byun and Liquid has this.
Ah well, rematch vs EG will be great, and it's especially awesome to see TLO back on track.
I liked TLO's 1-1 ling timing into 2-2 ling timing into 3-3 ling timing. kept mkp's army small and kept him contained on 2 bases for long enough to drone up a third and fourth

yesterday i stayed up so late because of TLO. Totally worthed it, we can see his practice starting to pay off and i really liked what he showed, original and smart play, that's what we expect from TLO !!

Nah, TLO has still far to go but in the last months (after his switch to Zerg) he is steadily improving: He practices more and has developed a style that suits his strengths. He still has some flaws like big army control and still needs a lot of refinement against 2 base all-ins aswell as in his late macro games. He won a few online cups and the Heat Charity event in the last two weeks, so it wasn`t a solitary incident. It will still take many months until he might be called in the same breath as Kas or Nerchio though and people shopuldn`t do the mistake to go from retarded memes like "TLOverrated" to the next hype again but instead they should start to consider him as a hardworking progamer who has the chance to become a serious contender.
TLO is dedicated and that is all that matters.That is what ppl want to see.He takes this game seriously and he is the nicest person ever.He fights day in and day out and i hope that he gets the results he wants.

He finally seems to have found the balance between his innovative strats and solid straight up play. He has the label of the gimmicky overrated player that has a larger fanbase than he deserves, but I truly admire this guy. It is not so much his interesting/crazy play style or his casting abilities I´m fond of, but his dedication.
He went through a lot of problems (primary health related), but he didn´t give up. He could have easily taken a different and easier path in life, but loves this game too much. Pretty much every time I look at this site, I see his stream running. He has one of the best work ethics in the foreign scene.
If someone works his a** off so much for something he loves, I can´t help but root for him.
