I missed the whole day. Did Puma 1-1-1 Whitera or it was a straight up game?

If the crowd is any indication, I think this will probably be the last live IPL there is. Not much of a rivalry.

This is IPL's first live event. The crowd is small but the tournament itself is much better than MLG.

Won't matter much if they lose tons of money on this one. Hard to imagine that they didn't given what we are looking at. I'm not making any judgement on how good the tournament is...that really doesn't matter a lot when investors are losing tons of money to do it.

Hah, well good thing you know the ins and outs of the funding and profits at IGN and IPL. Crowd tonight actually seemed decent size. Tomorrow will be the true test. Tournament has been great so far minus the internet outage.

You make it sound like what I'm saying is really out there. It seems completely obvious. They have done tons to make this one of the best looking tournaments we have seen. Do you think that is cheap? Why are all the other tournaments not able to do it? The fact that it looks so great and they have so much content is clearly because they spent a lot of money doing it right. When you do that, you are expecting to get a pretty huge return to make it worth it. You look at those crowds and tell me that's huge. Thursday and Friday were bare. There was hardly anyone there. It looks decent today because it is a Saturday and there were more people than the last 2 days...but it is still a tiny crowd. I think you are being really naive to think that they can afford to continue running events like this with tiny crowds and the potential for stream problems. If it had pulled an MLG crowd...or even half of that, I'd feel a lot more optimistic about their future. For the record, I think it's sad...I'm not happy about it.

This is also the first tournament based solely around SC II (no halo, no call of duty), the stream numbers and amount of advertising/sponsors help. Better production value doesn't always mean they had to throw more money at it.

I'm suggesting that most new ventures don't gain much money and barely break even. Over time though as production value and entertainment value grows (along with taking constructive criticism...aka not making it 21+ event) they will become more profitable or die out. IPL does have some great production value and a ton of potential. I don't think you could of said the same for the first MLG ever produced.

Either way, I'm not happy about the lackluster showing of fans (not that I've seen pictures of the crowd today). I also know that this is the first time IGN has had a huge live event. If you actually think that the sponsors didn't know what they were getting into when taking on the first event then I have no idea. They obviously have the funding and the more events that they produce the more fans will come out (especially if it isn't 21+). Maybe I'm wrong though and IPL will merge with another league or die out. Eventually there should be 2-3 premier leagues and are setup around the same time each year.

PuMa didn't use the 3-1-1 build at any point; he destroyed White-Ra straight up in both matches.
And on the pedestal these words appear -- "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Puma didn't 1-1-1 either game, it was more Whitera being super greedy the first game (warp prism + early 3rd got him rolled by the timing push) and in the second game he engaged with puma's army at his 3rd in a horrible fashion, losing his entire army + 3rd and just never came back.

I love how people boast on the complete financial failure of IPL claiming things like "but look how much the equipment costs"

Dudes, if you use the same equipment for the next 5 years, you can be running tournaments and not need to buy much else for that period of time, will leave it there, short and clear, and not go into the very dificult basics of finances.

lol at thinking they are going to make that investment before there first ever event without any assurances how long they will be doing these.

Do you know who the fuck is IGN actually? They can afford to make the investment.
And it is not like equipment has a 0 value if you need to scrap everything early than expected, that kind of equipment can be sold to retrieve money.

Starting a business is about taking risks, no one would open a shop if they didnt think it is their long term plan to make a living off it, so dont think that bigger companies think in an smaller way than your average small town shopkeeper.

Wow IPL is looking to become a huge gaming organization. This is actually really exciting! I'm surprised the response here is so small, unless everyone just left, or this has all been discussed before. 4 tournaments next year with MANY different games, and they are working closely with other organizations to not step on each others toes. 2012 is going to be a great year!

Yeah but Starcraft II is the center main stage game. It hasn't always been that way with MLG or any other tournament (minus NASL).
