It’s been little over a year since the launch of StarCraft II. The GSL, which has been receiving a lot of love and support from all of you, has also celebrated its first anniversary a short while ago.
I believe that this year has been a special year for e-sports. A lot of things that were not accomplished in SC/BW were achieved in the course of just one year.
Players from all around the world competing each other, leading international tournaments working together with exchange programs, foreign players coming to Korea for training and Korean players joining foreign teams - all of these are remarkable developments that have not occurred to this extent in the past 10 years of e-sports history.
Alongside GSL, there have been many major tournaments out there entertaining fans worldwide. We at GSL are always hoping to work together with other foreign tournaments and believe we have accomplished a lot in that regard this year.
When we first introduced the 2011 GSL Tour we have mentioned the Blizzard CUP. The Blizzard CUP is a tournament in which we plan to look back at and conclude the year 2011 and determine the best of best. Additionally, other events like Best Coach Award, Fan Favorite Player Award, Best Player of their respective Race Award etc. are planned.
We are currently in the last stages of deciding on and tweaking the format and schedule of the 2012 GSL Tour.
The concepts for GSL 2012 are: 1. More chances 2. Prove yourself 3. Are you qualified to stay in Code S?
We hope everyone will enjoy the remainder of the 2011 GSL Tour and is looking forward to what we have in store for 2012.
The outline of Blizzard CUP is as follows:
Players: Best 10 of 2011 - 2011 GSL Point Ranking TOP 1,2,3 (3) - 1st and 2nd place of MLG Providence (2) - Winner of IEM NYC (1) - Winner of IPL Season 3 (1) - Winner of DreamHack Winter (1) - Winner of Blizzcon (1) - Winner of WCG (1) - If players have more than one title, suitable replacements will be invited
Tournament format: Group Play -> Playoffs - 10 players will be divided in 2 groups of 5. - The 3 top players of each group advance to the playoffs. - Group A 1st vs (Group A 3rd vs Group B 2nd) - Group B 1st vs (Group B 3rd vs Group A 2nd)
Schedule - 12/12 Monday: Group A - 12/13 Tuesday: Group B - 12/14 Wednesday: Round of 6 - 12/15 Thursday: Round of 4 - 12/17 Saturday: Final and Award Ceremony

Looking forward to this, I think many people have a score to settle on the best players The prize pool great as always
this really will be the best 10 players on the world right now.. i truly believe this. So we have Nestea and MVP qualified right now!. Hope the other 8 wont be only terrans. GJ GOM
And please GOM. BO1 in Code S is bad for the GAME. Fix this.. the format is okish.. but make it BO3 in group stages. Thanks!
Wow, with this tournament, we can actually have the best of the best compete against each other to determine who the greatest player for SC2 is in this particular year. I'm thrilled to see who will show up besides the obvious Mvp, NesTea and MC (GSL rank 1-3).

Thanks for giving us a personal update. I hope you guys finally settle on a format. The volatility of who left and stayed in Code S was pretty effective in shaking up our expectations of top tier champions and bottom rung clingers.
Great news, sounds like a great tournament, couldn't it become a 12 player tournament? (winner TSL3 & ESWC, those 2 tournaments are imho also 2 of the BIG tournaments from this year).
Awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I feel the IEM NYC winner wont be of much quality as Grade A quality. Being MLG is on the same weekend.
Also NesTea/MVP will win BlizzCon also so might aswell start looking for a replacement now And MLG will probably be won by MVP so will you be giving it out to 2nd place? Or is it just big names?
Other than the issue with the people winning the other tournaments. Will be a sick tournament

Two of those spots will be Nestea, I hope you have a solution in-mind already (:
Yes, in the OP it says that they'll find a suitable invite if a player fills more than one of those ten spots -.- Doesn't say how, but there's quite a few good players to choose from, so I don't it being a big issue.
For those to lazy to google it, first place prize is 33 440 $, not bad isn't it? I hope foreigners will be able to qualify, it's going to be tough because each of these tournaments is going to be stacked with korean players. I think our best chances are WCG (there won't be a big number of koreans compared to foreigners, there is a chance the korean players get cheesed out or something like this) , maybe IEM new york (I don't know who are the koreans that are supposed to go there). I we can have a huk, a naniwa or even sase qualify this would be the most epic tournament ever ^^.
Negative: The NASL champion representative is noticeably absent from the invites.
In terms of prize pool, even though it has a long season, it absolutely dwarfs many of the tournaments on that list. In terms of EU, NA, and Koreans (on EU and NA teams), they really couldn't have done a better job.

well, this one is not true because at the beginning foreigners had their chances and in first years there was few foreign players (that is a lot because game wasn't so popular and prizes were low).. and in next 10 yrs there were chances for foreign players but they couldn't get them because korean players were just too good.. and as time passes they are too good in sc2 too. I hope I'm wrong and that in the future foreigners would have more than one code S player
other news are great, as whole GOM TV events and I can't wait to see it!
As always, great to see GOM trying their best to acknowledge the foreigner players and giving them many chances to qualify for this tournament even if you don't play GSL.
The prize pool distribution is really painful to read though. The current standard for top-heavy tournaments (i.e DreamHack, Assembly, GSL SuperTournament) is give 50% of the total prize pool to the winner. According to the OP the Blizzard CUP will award 59% of the total prize pool to the winner.
This tournament is a very unique one, but I still feel like distributing it like that is wrong.
I've been getting excited about the Blizzard Cup since we're drawing closer to the end of the year. =D
Interesting format change (IIRC it was going to be top 10 GSL points, 9th playing 10th in a Bo7, winner playing 8th, and so on). I like the one you're going with better.
An end of the year, definitive tournament made up of the best from all of the tournaments from an entire year...FINALLY! A TRULY PRESTIGIOUS AND RARE TOURNAMENT!
(Thinking about it now...TSL fulfills that as well, but the random nature of it...yeah...)
wow is this what we need a proper world championship with the most prominat players of the year, looks awsome. Also thumbs up for the new site looks nice

WOAH!!!! This has the potential to be the coolest show ever!
Absolutely phenomenal work, GomTV. It truly is amazing that eSports and StarCraft II is taking off like this to the point where so much money is up for grabs for these awesome players. You read an LR, you read a reddit thread and you read the really silly comments about how people "will not be supporting GomTV because [their] race" isn't represented; how they'll be denying money, the means of support for things like this, and you get really disappointed.
You think for a moment that this will end because of people whining about balance. I predominantly play Protoss and so I understand their frustration. But I akin it to being a Phoenix Suns fan. For a long time (read 1993-2004), we were nothing. It was absolutely difficult being a Phoenix Suns fan--but there's no way management is going to start purchasing the Kobe Bryants or Tim Duncans of the world in the 17th Media Market of the United States if the fanbase isn't there. And then in 2004, we got some fresh blood in management who saw that there was potential. They made some amazing purchases and they put together a team that competed. Not every time is Protoss going to win... in fact, with the exception of White-Ra at IPL'2, I don't think Protoss has done a damn thing (recently).
It will happen though. Not only that, Protoss players will make things fun and they will compete. So don't punish a tournament that is doing so much for this fledgling esport because your race is ill-represented this month or the next.
It's kind of funny how SC2 can be broken down by so many different levels. Are you an EG fan, are you a Startale fan, are you a Huk fan, Destiny fan, yada, yada, yada. Or just a zerg fan. That's when you know you have a good thing. Personally, I just like good games, regardless of the race. I hope to improve my play and while I do so, watch some people do some insane shit. So thank you Mr. Chae, thank you GomTV and thank you TL for being a phenomenal internet home for the English-speaking SC2 player.

I feel like it's gonna be a 100% korean players tournament

MC currently sits 3rd in the GSL rankings. All Polt needs to do to pass him is get to the Ro16 next tournament. MarineKing is also in striking distance. Also if anyone new wins that isn't MVP or Nestea, they can probably jump him as well.
If one spot is taken by another (like Nestea as the #2 in GSL and Blizzcon winner) or vice versa with MVP, they should just take the next person in line in the GSL rankings.
sounds like a pretty solid idea for such a tournament - you could of course argue that you want more players in a "best of tournament" etc. ... but this feels like a good choice.
wasn't last year announced that the blizzcup will be the top 8 players with the most GSL points? I think the current format is ok, but it seems kinda unfair to the 4th till 8th gsl player

The BlizzCup, if I remember correctly, was the top ten GSL ranked players in a KotH tournament. It would go #10 vs. #9 in a Bo7 and then the winner would face the eighth seeded player the next day in another Bo7. It would go on until whoever is left faces the #1 player for the big cash.
This is why people like MC and MVP were so worried about their points a few months ago. If they had gotten in the top few spots, it would be guaranteed cash.

Awsome tournament, i will definitely watch it. I like that GOM is collaborating with other foreign tournaments, it would be cool to see Code A/S games in Dreamhack too.

Keywords are "to this extent".
edit: I don't like them inviting the winner of IEM NY though tbh. All the top players are going to be at MLG Orlando during that event I thought?

Hahaha you say this every time don't you?
But this does sound like a great tournament and I am looking forward to it. I think even if it doesn't involve more of the top gsl players that we will still have great players (probably from the gsl), qualifying from other tournaments anyway. Perhaps there will be one or maybe two players or something that don't belong to be there but that can be the case with any tournament. I still think we will see super high level games regardless. Thanks to GOM for doing more great things!
According to the GSL ranking it is definitely sure that NesTea and MVP will 1 & 2.
But it will be a tough fight for the third place. Right now MC has the spot but if Polt or MarineKing does well next GSL (GSL November?) they can get enough points for third place.
Does this mean that we have three players cleared already: MVP, Nestea and MC. ... or are there more point rewarding GSL events before this happens? Like a GSL November?
If they are using GSL points why not use MLG points ? In case of other tournaments it makes sense as they do not have point systems, but MLG does. Anyway it will be quite easily all(or nearly)-Korean tournament, which is ok, just not really in any way different from standard GSL season or Super Tournament. Also if the goal is to pick 10 best players of the year the method seems not consistent with the goal.
But those nitpicks aside, sounds like it will be fun to watch as the level of play should be consistently high.
40 000 000 South Korean won = 33 440 U.S. dollars 10 000 000 South Korean won = 8360 U.S. dollars 5 000 000 South Korean won = 4180 U.S. dollars 2 000 000 South Korean won = 1672 U.S. dollars 1 000 000 South Korean won = 836 U.S. dollars
Total: 68 000 000 South Korean won = 56 848 U.S. dollars
Quite lame the IEM event has to be the New York one. Players have decided not to try and quialify already for this event to Attend MLG Orlando. Either they invite some very big Korean names for it, or the player coming out of that one might be the weakest of all 10 :/
Players: Best 10 of 2011 - 2011 GSL Point Ranking TOP 1,2,3 (3) - Winner of Blizzcon (1) - If players have more than one title, suitable replacements will be invited
This suddenly makes third place at Blizzcon very attractive ! It would be ironic if the foreigner to qualify that way was actually SeleCT...

So in addition to the hefty prize pool, the players will have the burden of fighting for the prestige of being called the best player in the world for 2011.

Yeah, that's very likely to happen. I don't see the top 3 of GSL ranking not winning one of those "qualifying" tournaments...

So I guess if MVP wins Blizzcon, for instance (and it's actually gonna happen ^^), then the Blizzcon runner-up will get a spot

I cannot thank you enough for GOMtv and the GSL. You indeed have accomplished much, and I know it will continue to grow. I must compliment you on your continued involvement in foreign tournaments such as the MLG partnership. You are trying to make SC2 a global game and phenomenon, and you are well on your way to your goal. The production and entertainment value of the GSL continues to improve and the level of competition just can't be matched. Thank you for all you and your well run organization have done.
Mr chae, without an awesome, open minded and creative person like you e-sports and starcraft would not be where it is today. We all owe you our thanks!
I hope for 2012 GOMTV introduces some sort of monthly "all SC2 tournaments" pass. I don't like having to buy the monthly plus the team league plus the super tourney plus this etc etc.
there will definitely a foreigner since mvp & nestea will 1-2 finish in blizzcon, and they are also on top of the gsl ranking. unless Gom has different method to determine invitees, like a small qualifier

Holy fuck. That is probably the sickest qualification process possible. This is taking the champions from most of the major events of the year - it does not get much closer to an actual World Championship than this.
I think this is the most prestigious tournament in SC2. This will be it.

World cups mostly invite maximum 1 national team or at least have guaranteed participants from multiple countries. This will most likely be Korean only tournament. The difference from standard GSL is that good players stuck in code A or B have a chance to participate.

Football World Cup is a bad comparison indeed - The ATP World Tour Finals in Tennis are a better example (obviously made easier through a unified ranking, but still comparable in picking out the most accomplished players of the year).
But still... The prizepool fails just a tad. It's meant to be the big final tournament of the year and all that good stuff. They(hopefully) bring players from all around the world, or maybe just korea, together. It sounds to be a major setup with more than just the games and this is what they bring: 68.000.000 KRW. They ought to do better. But what the hell, not going to stop me from watching this epic piece of sh*t...

I think it shows the total points, not just those from 2011. Hence why Nestea's first at all, because Mvp is notably above him in 2011 ranking points. Mvp's points are almost the same as they are in 2011 points (because he only got ro32 and ro16 in the open seasons).

Hm, I can think of 4 possible reasons NASL isn't included:
1) regular season ends halfway through November and no one knows when the finals are held - GOM needs finished dates to schedule.
2) GOM does know the final dates, but they are too close to the Blizzard Cup or simply too late
3) Mr Chae was involved in the failed negotiations of Korean players with NASL and he (and by extension, GOM) doesn't want a partnership with NASL at this point.
4) GOM considers the 7 franchises chosen (GSL/MLG/IEM/DH/IPL/WCG/Blizzcon) as bigger than NASL.
It's important to note that they did have prior partnerships with some of these.
...I'm not the expressive type...but I <3 GSL and GOMTV's SC2 tourneys. They are the best in the world. Congratulations on a great year and many, many more to come! :D

the IEM choice is completely arbitrary.
It is seems arbitrary with the pick of IEM NY, does not mean it has to be, you could look at which IEM had the toughest players and it would stop being completely arbitrary (only the judgment of which players are better would remain somewhat arbitrary), but I get your point. And I understand why theoretically MLG Providence is used, but my point was that if they try to get best players of the year there is no reason to think that Providence will have best participants of all MLGs this year.

1st place at NASL season 2 2nd place at NASL season 2
Those two should definately be qualified for this if the season 2 ends before this tournament.
Also all chosen tournaments are wholly (except qualifiers) live whereas NASL is for most part online. That might also be behind the decision.
Im really excited for this tournament! Sounds great!
And can we get some clarification on 'More chances'? I hope this means more chances for lesser known players. The players in Code S seem to have many chances to keep their position, more chances I feel would be to many.... ;p
Players: Best 10 of 2011 - 2011 GSL Point Ranking TOP 1,2,3 (3)- So MVP, Nestea and MC - 1st and 2nd place of MLG Providence (2) Another 2 koreans:D - Winner of IEM NYC (1) - Winner of IPL Season 3 (1) - Winner of DreamHack Winter (1) - Winner of Blizzcon (1) so MVp or nestea - Winner of WCG (1) MVP prob.
What is not mentioned, unless I've missed something, is what this is going to cost to spectate.
Is it free, the normal GSL format (pay for more VoDs/HD), or pay only?
Also, GOM, you need to come out with some kind of GSL Pass that is a subscription service and gives access to all GOMTV content for a cheaper monthly price but you guys get the subscription benefit.
Brilliant idea. Nice to see a final, end of the year competition that allows players who performed well to compete against each other. Sounds amazing wont miss it!

As Artosis has stated multiple times, Code S status is like a job for these progamers. It's impossible to implement a system similar to BW right now because of the lack of sponsors and wages for the players. We need to give it more time.
2011 GSL Point Ranking TOP 1,2,3 (3) (MVP, Nestea, MKP) - 1st and 2nd place of MLG Providence (2) (MVP, Bomber) - Winner of IEM NYC (1) (dunno what koreans are in it yet) - Winner of IPL Season 3 (1) (MC) - Winner of DreamHack Winter (1) (DRG) - Winner of Blizzcon (1) (MVP) - Winner of WCG (1) (MVP)
Sounds like this will be an excellent tournament. I love the format! Only wish there was more prize money for the players. Sponsors gotta get on this.. I've switched to LG, gskill and intel exclusively because of their commitment to escorts.

WCG has koreans in it. The games have been airing on OGN every friday/saturday night the past few weeks at 9pm PST.
Looks ridiculously awesome, but I think we need more than 10 players in this thing which can easily be accomplished by chopping off some of that first place prize money!
It may end up being Korean only but if that ends up being the case it will be because they are the best players. This is super exciting that all the big leagues are working together like this!
Should be the absolute best tournament to date with all of the powerhouse players that will be invited based off of RECENT CHAMPIONSHIPS. Looking forward to a best of the best tournament, although this will most likely involve 7-8 terrans, and 2 zergs. Guess how many protoss!
But I agree that the NASL Season 2 winner should be considered as a replacement, since I'm sure that the top 3 in GSL points will also probably win some of those other tournaments too
"Players from all around the world competing each other, leading international tournaments working together with exchange programs, foreign players coming to Korea for training and Korean players joining foreign teams - all of these are remarkable developments that have not occurred to this extent in the past 10 years of e-sports history. "
No offence, but all of this has happened in both BW and WC3. SC2 is nothing new in that regard. It just got more money invested into it on a global scale because gaming is much more mainstream.
Both BW and WC3 have had exchange programs, major international events and Korean players joining foreign teams (WC3 more so).
It is very great to see that the Korean scene is all the more starting to accept the foreigner fans, and pleasing them in that regard. I think all the foreigner fans deserve this, as we support the GSL and all the the other events. Although, I must give a big thanks to Mr Chae for organising this event, which should prove to be an exciting ending to the 2011 year of eSports.

Why would they back date? It looks like all tournaments that haven't happen yet. Besides the top 1-2-3 GSL
This sounds as if it can get really exciting. Being crowned "the best player of 2011" is not something you want to be missed if you're a player like MVP!
Personally I'd rather take the NASL winner over IEM New York but as has been said before, there could be interference with the NASL finals and this tourney.
Thank you GOMTV. This tournament sounds awesome. I love how you determine the qualifiers! Though it would be nice to announce the criterion for the "stand-by list" ahead of times in case you have overlap.
On October 06 2011 18:47 MrSexington wrote: Positive: I agree, this is all very awesome.
Why does the NASL champ deserve to be invited? Then again I guess you could say that about the IEM too.
Be cool if one of the spots could be a fan vote, maybe something to consider if there are overlaps or if you decide to add a few more players. Well sounds good either way.

See the problem with popularity based invites?
I doubt destiny would win, or it could easily be restricted to players that have participated in gom tournaments only or something.

Well, I'd rather have the invites be based on merits rather than popularity. We will have to gree to disagree on that
YEAHH!! Mr Chae you are awesome!! This looks like one of the best tournaments of all SC2 history, too bad only 10 players, but taking account that it's the best 10 players of the world it's ok!

Theoretically WCG should be considered the eSports world cup
This is an awesome idea, inviting the winners of tournaments around the world. Should be some really top end competition!
The concepts for GSL 2012 are: 1. More chances 2. Prove yourself 3. Are you qualified to stay in Code S?
I also like the sound of this, sounds like the turnover for Code S will be quicker meaning there will be a better chance for rising players to make it in Code S and insert new blood into the sytem.

Doubling the turnover chance could be good. Instead of 8 players falling to up and down, 16, for example. That would mean everyone who failed to advance to Ro16.
Edit: the Format for the MSL was that top 8 would be seeded, everyone else would drop sown into Survivor which would be equivalent to up and down.
also, I think what the GSL needs is less chances, in order to make them special to win like an OSL... winning an OSL is an incredible achievement, I hope GSL can have the same value one day.
I think what GOM should look into is other tournaments and also into expanding the GSTL into a long season format like the proleague. In addition, while the Code S/Code A/Code B format makes sense and is clearly deliniated at this point, I'm starting to wonder what would happen if we let some of the young guns have a straight shot at the title instead of stuffing them into code A.... I think Code B and Code A should be a long offline/online prelim and the best 16 out of that go onto the main GSL with the top 16 from the previous GSL, somewhat alike to the current MSL format.
Very awesome tourny concept, and I hope to see more like it in the future. As other people have been mentioning, while GSL being so frequent is great on a lot of fronts, it does kind of water down winning it compared to an OSL. So in response we need a definitive 'world championship' where the undeniable best players of the year face off for a grand prize.
Looks like a great tournament, players should be incredible and I doubt there will be anybody who people will rule out in the tournament. Cannot wait <3 Thank you GOMTV and Mr. Chae and everybody else involved
Awesome to hear that both sides are enjoying this cooperation. Let me tell you though, that this probably wouldn't have come so far if it wasn't for the korean's willingness to open up.

I hope you have your thinking cap for deciding "suitable replacements" because MVP is gonna win the GSL, MLG providence, IPL3 and Blizzcon.
This sounds pretty awesome. I also like that is happens over the course of a series of consecutive days, so it decreases the odds of build order wars that tend to happen when players are given too much time to question themselves and prepare specifically for one player and one map.

Technically it is, but the spread of players form nations are distributed too evenly (Koreans not represented enough)
This way, we get the best of the best, and if they happen to be Korean (which most are lol) then it accurately shows the worlds top players.

Why fanboy? He's far and away the best player in the world.
I think the only downside to this is that we're already guarantee'd a replacement invitee because of the high likelyhood of NesTea/MVP winning Blizzcon, while still keeping their places in the GSL rankings. Hopefully this means someone like Polt or Bomber will get the invite in their place.
I'm not so sure on this. I feel like the GSL could be represented more heavily; even though the finals obviously have a history of failing, slumps and peaks seem to come out in the wash such that the top10 GSL would probably be a pretty accurate measure of the top10 in the world.
Inviting such a spread of random tournaments gives you a pretty high chance that a good but not completely amazing player can push through a finals due to a weak pool. Idra won IEM, for example, and while he's really, really good, I don't think he's quite top 10. Those are all in the GSL, and there's a reasonable chance they might miss out depending how many tournaments MVP attends...
Speaking of which, the alternative danger is that MVP will clean house at every foreigner event, and you'll end up inviting two thirds of your pool on opaque metrics.

Claiming that a player is going to win pretty much every single tournaments that he enters and even ones that he does not even play in makes it more likely that you are dealing with a fanboy then a realistic observer.
I by the way do agree that MVP is extremely likely to qualify through GSL points and can see him winning MLG Providence/BlizzCon. I do find that claiming he will win pretty much every single tournament he enters however does not look very realistic.
All the leagues/tournies coming together, (except a few..) how great is that. And to reiterate what everyone is saying. THANKS FOR BEING AWESOME MR. CHAE.

Don't confuse being a fanboy with being wrong. The IPL3 thing was just a simple mistake. I honestly do believe MVP will win the rest though. Blizzcon basically comes down to MVP vs Nestea and we all know how that usually ends. Providence has more Koreans, but ones MVP has already beaten many times before.
I can't see any Terran or Zerg outside of Drg beating MVP. A really good Pvt'er could beat him but there are no Korean Protosses good enough going to any of these events.

Yeah, and a few months ago people were saying the same thing about Nestea. And before that it was MC. And before that it was etc etc etc
The thing that GOM is best at is improving. There isn't a thing about the GSL that hasn't gotten better over the past year. The play, casting, and production is all the standard that the industry looks to as an example.
Secondly... kinda sad they're accepting IEM NYC winner instead of Guangzhou. Yeah it makes sense to use the more recent tourney, but it'd have been fun to see Idra (and the competition in IEM NYC doesn't seem that great to me... I don't know. 8 American players is kind of a lot)

TBH it looks like a Korean only tournament, which would be fine for GOMTV on one hand, since it means less travel fees to pay for and more money kept within the Korean pro community, and not fine on another, since it means less foreigner fans might actually watch.
We'll see, though. I imagine at least IdrA would get an invite if they don't get an unique player for every other qualification criteria, since he won IEM Guangzhou.

This tournament looks amazing. Thank you guys.
i agree except for one tiny thing that has gotten worse during the last year: that tastosis dont cast all gsl games anymore.
This could be amazing! Thanks for continuing to improve and push the boundaries. I think the invites for champions of other tournaments are an especially good idea as they serve to unite players and fans across leagues and around the globe.
I actually liked the old proposed Blizzard Cup format way back then. It was the Top 10 is GSL ranking and the last ranked player played the next seed up in a Bo7 and then the winner of that plays the next seed up. Worked like STX cup or if your not familiar with broodwar, imagine Mortal Kombat II
I dislike giving away seeds for so many foreign events. Makes it feel more like a invite event rather than the be-all end-all of GSL tournaments.
Also, I think the prize pool was much higher initially with the standard 100M won, with half of that for 1st place and a quarter of it for second place.
Well, at least this is better than that silly King of the Hill format where the first place person only had to win one match to grab the top prize. Thanks, Mr. Chae!
It would be funny if we ended up with something like this (and this is not too improbable actually)
2011 GSL Point Ranking TOP 1,2,3 (3) - MVP, NesTea, MC 1st and 2nd place of MLG Providence (2) - MVP, MC Winner of IEM NYC (1) - ?? Winner of IPL Season 3 (1) - MC Winner of DreamHack Winter (1) - MC Winner of Blizzcon (1) - MVP/NesTea Winner of WCG (1) - MVP
so, besides the fancy name, its basicly another one-week-tournament. top 1 and 2 players from different tournaments = i see alot of TvTs going to happen. and some "awards" that, honestly, dont mean much anything.
well, i probably will watch it, and i look forward to it as i look forward to any tournament but honesty i dont see a reason for the hype. just my hubmle opinion, no offense
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL EVERYONE is going to be competing in all of those listed events now. (whereas before people would be like "hmm I think I'm going to join this major"). Everyone's going to want every opportunity possible to enter this event. This makes me think that the next month or 2 will be the most extreme month(s) in sc2 history ;DDD

Hooray ESPORTS!!! Sounds like the best players of FALL 2011. All the notable tournaments will have concluded over the next two months. Top 3 from GSL will likely be MVP, Nestea and another Korean. I'm glad GSL is doing one of these 'championship' tournaments too. Similar to IEM and MLG. Extremely intriqued at how all of these tournaments will go down and who will be attending the Blizzard Cup.

I believe the proper wording is, NASL refused to multiply the Koreans' stipends tenfold days before the tournament was set to begin.
Excellent wrap-up tourny, particularly for an environment (as noted on SOTG recently) that has so many tournies it's hard to win a big one and stand out for a while. The winner of this should be pretty impressive.
I've skimmed through some pages. I saw it being mentioned but didn't see a response (so forgive me for asking again if a response was given),
But why is NASL Season 2 winner not included?
To me, that's the most logical choice after GSL/MLG. I'd probably include 2nd place too.
It's the only tournament that follows standard profesional sport format, with a really long season culminating in a finals event. I feel like, the winner of that should go to the "bowl game" of the sport.
The only logical thing I can think of is the schedule...finals may be too close to Blizzcon. But if it's over the Korean drama, that's just stupid. GSL/Blizzcon are professional organizations so I expect more of them than to fall to some stupid elementary-level drama.
Schedule - 12/12 Monday: Group A - 12/13 Tuesday: Group B - 12/14 Wednesday: Round of 6 - 12/15 Thursday: Round of 4 - 12/17 Saturday: Final and Award Ceremony
During finals week, woo! Fortunately, I only have one final!
Just saying but the IEM NYC player list doesn't look too impressive and neither does the prize pool, surprised the winner of this is getting a slot in front of the likes on NASL or ESWC.

NASL Season 2 ends just a week before Blizzard Cup. To wait so late before all players are known could be difficult. I don't know if this is the reason but it could be because of that - all the other tournaments end in November or earlier.

Mana is hardly top 10, there are easily quite a few better players than him but I'm not saying that he's bad. The only one in that tournament who might be top 10 is DRG.
Yeah! Very interested to see what Stephano can do there. Also: Isn't MVP already mathematically qualified on GSL points or is there also a GSL november?
Edit.
Also think that the IEM NY spot is a big of an 'easy ride' looking at the player pool and comparing that to other events. Think that that spot would have made more sense in NASL2 but considering what happened between NASL and the Koreans that probably wasn't an option. (Even though NASL was fully in the right there)

Mana? Sjow? DRG? SangHo? Elfi? Sounds pretty impressive to me.
They are good but not near the top 10, I hope DRG takes the IEM NYC otherwise I'd be dissapointed.
Mana crushes Stephano every game they play and Sjow is pretty much the only foreigner who has retained his code A spot lately. They're at least as good as the line-up of IPL3. DRG > Lucky, Mana > Stephano and Sjow > theSTC. IPL3 had more top players tho but saying Mana isn't top 10 ROFL
ahhahahaha funny > > > u underrate theSTC quiet a bit i think... and all other koreans that play at ipl3 put a high level on that tournament.
and actually mana said something like:"seriously, how to beat stephano?" but sure... mana is on fire

I hadn't seen the Korean invites until after I posted that. Although I do think Idra would stand a better chance than killer tbh

yeah, i kind of think that those invites were set up just to give the eternally overrated DRG as close to a free ride into this event as you can, seeing how he's never done anything in korea. which means i would love it if mana can upset the applecart

Tbh the Chinese IEM lineup wasn't too stellar either. And I bet you'd be talking differently if Idra went out in the group like he almost did.

I do agree that I'd love to see MaNa, Sjow, or Strelok win, the NY lineup is significantly weaker than IEM China.
Puma/idra/dimaga/jyp/Hasu are all significantly better than almost every player at IEM NY (Strelok and Elfi are eliminated because they're in both)
Old format and prizepool was better... more interested in seeing the best players rather than token foreigners. Curious as to the motivation behind the changes.
Still, IMMVP complained in his interview that the players were not informed of this new format, so many players are saddened and disappointed that they won't be participating anymore. Oh, and the prize pool was reduced significantly too. Such a shame.
And unless someone in the top 13ish wins a GSL this month or the next, the third place will probably go to Polt. Unless somehow MKP makes a deep run next month.
On October 12 2011 12:01 theBizness wrote: Old format and prizepool was better... more interested in seeing the best players rather than token foreigners. Curious as to the motivation behind the changes.
old format was retarded. winning a single matchup shouldnt win you a "world championship" with 10 strong players. and none of the qualified players are going to be "token foreigners", they are going to be winners of major LANs that included anywhere from a few to many strong Koreans. MVP and Nestea are almost certainly going to take 1-2 in rankings, and there is a very high chance MVP grabs a few of the other criteria slots anyways. Its going to end up being a tournament with MVP, Nestea, and Stephano combined with the winners of some huge tourneys and probably slots 3-5 in the GSL point system.

MKP would only have to do 400 points better than Polt, which isn't farfetched at all. And keep in mind that there will likely be 1-2 double ups, so it may go 1-4.

IF you are seeded first, I don't see why you can't have just one Bo7 to secure your claim. I saw the Blizzard Cup as end of year bonus payment with the matches just as a last chance for players to change their ranking.
Meh. I just really wanted to see format cause it's different from everything else and creates great potential storylines.
Imagine the #10 ranked climbing to 1st. Or MKP going through Nestea, Polt, and MC, just to lose to MVP in the end.
Wait...so if Nestea and MVP ends up being winners of lets say Blizzcon and WCG how does that come into play since theyre most likely top 3 in the GSL point rankings....

They probably take runner ups to some of the tournaments or go down the GSL rankings

MVP/Nestea will take up both spots because he earned it. If it becomes MVP vs MVP final, he will get 2 computers and play a TvT. Atleast that won't be as one-sided as the last GSL finals.
2011 GSL Point Ranking TOP 1,2,3 (3) - 1st and 2nd place of MLG Providence (2) - Winner of IEM NYC (1) - Winner of IPL Season 3 (1) - Winner of DreamHack Winter (1) - Winner of Blizzcon (1) - Winner of WCG (1)
I'm going to guess..Hmm> Top 3 GSL - MVP/Nestea/MC which would soon be changed into MC/Polt/MKP IPL - Stephano Blizzcon - MVP or Nestea WCG - Nestea or MVP MLG - Bomber /MMA IEM - DRG Dreamhack - uhh..some random korean mentioned above leading to the invite of IdrA or White-Ra or.some surprise entry turns out to be Leenock/LosirA and they join..
So ultimately.. MVP Nestea Stephano Polt MC DRG MMA Bomber MKP
and then one of the last remaining signees being a complete random and toss up.
However, I wish they had added in other Champions prior to just this month. I mean, Dreamhack Summer should be considered if Winter is. IEM New York is being taken into account, so why not Guangzhou which only took place 2(?) weeks before New York.
It probably has something to do with scheduling and it'll still be an awesome tourney anyways.
And unless someone in the top 13ish wins a GSL this month or the next, the third place will probably go to Polt. Unless somehow MKP makes a deep run next month.
With MC back in Code S, the race for spot #3 could be interesting.
It'll be interesting to see who they invite + on what basis if MVP/Nestea end up winning Blizzcon or MLG also in MVP's case.
I think GOM likely recognizes that having more foreigners than Stephano is probably good for interest in the tournament, and thus I think the invites to replace those with more than one title are likely to be foreigners.
IdrA and HuK seem like obvious choices with their recent tournament victories. And hey, perhaps one of them will take 1st or 2nd in Providence anyways.

MMA has a shot too. If MMA beats MVP in the finals, he will only be a couple hundred points below MC for the third spot..

They will mostly like invite high ranking foreigners. They aren't stupid. They know the best way to attract an audience and make the Blizzard cup succeed is by having some more foreigners beyond Stephano.
Logically, Huk or IdrA would get an invite thanks to their recent wins. Probably Huk since he is more accomplished.

Well what the hell else are they supposed to do? They have a set of criteria for getting players in. If that set of criteria doesn't fill their tournament, they have to choice but to invite someone else.
In this case they will "invite" the winner of IEM Guangzhou (IdrA) or the winner of MLG Orlando (Huk).

Doesnt make sence at all better to go down the GSL ranking instead where we will have more GSL champions

I think it could happen, considering MVP is already invited and NesTea is going to providence, but he'd have to win the GSL or at least reach the finals and have MMA lose to the GSL curse early. Still, very unlikely , most likely players to win the GSL spots are MMA, MC and NesTea, and if he does win Providence, it's most likely to be MKP/Polt. July needs to reach the finals in order to have any chance.
If MC lives through group stage in GSL Nov, he pretty much secures 3rd place in rankings Polt/MMA/MKP would need semifinals to surpass him.
The outline of Blizzard CUP is as follows: [list] [*]Players: Best 10 of 2011 - 2011 GSL Point Ranking TOP 1,2,3 (3) - 1st and 2nd place of MLG Providence (2) - Winner of IEM NYC (1) - Winner of IPL Season 3 (1) - Winner of DreamHack Winter (1) - Winner of Blizzcon (1) - Winner of WCG (1) - If players have more than one title, suitable replacements will be invited
Nestea is already 100% in, 3rd place for GSL is up in the air between Polt, MC and MMA depending on GSL November rankings. IdrA and HuK would both have a high chance of getting in if they place top 4 of MLG (after MVP/Nestea) imo just due to their recent achievements + being some of the best/ the best foreigners

No idea who will be invited to take the slot MVP has (since he has 2 slots)

They may add #4 GSL, or 3rd at MLG prov, 2nd at Dreamhack...... winner of GSL novemeber? ( thought could be MVP again lol).....could go all the way to 3rd at blizzcon?
Unless they just randomly invite big name foriegners like Huk or Idra to take MVPS 6 slots.
Looking at it right now, with MC out in the Ro16, if MMA beats Oz, he qualifies by having the 3rd most GSL points. Otherwise the 3rd GSL spot goes to MC. Still, both MMA and MC could end up being MLG finalists, so who knows?

They can't exactly pick the second-place Blizzcon winner as a replacement too, since Nestea won that. And when you get to third place (Sen, I think?) then maybe you're stretching the rules a bit. I think first and second place of the WCG would be fairer then. Maybe they can let Idra in because he won that IEM in China.

If MMA beats Oz and advances to the RO8, he secures 3rd and a spot in the blizzard cup. If he loses that spot goes to MC.
About IdrA... let's be real, he almost definitely will get an invite. There will be some redundancy (mostly with MVP) and that means they will have to invite a player or two. The players they invite will most likely be Huk and IdrA or a Korean protoss (for racial diversity). They won't go down the list and invite korean terrans.
Everyone wants to see IdrA competing in this. And by everyone I don't mean his 50 million fanboys. IdrA is very popular is Korea as well. He is one of the few foreigners that all Koreans know about. And he will be in Korea at the time. I'm willing to bet a substantial amount of money that IdrA and Huk will get invites (provided there are enough open spots... which there most likely will be).

About IdrA... let's be real, he almost definitely will get an invite. There will be some redundancy (mostly with MVP) and that means they will have to invite a player or two. Lol uhhh wtf are you talking about? There are only 10 slots in this tournament, and you have to earn your spot. I'm pretty sure they won't just randomly throw out invites for replacements, they will be taking the person who is next in line for said spot. Idra and HuK will not be in this tournament unless they earn their spot by winning one of these upcoming tournaments (which is very possible).

IdrA and Huk most likly won't be invited, IdrA has already been given a spot in the up & down matches (as well as demuslim) so he won't get an invite that would be too unfair for players that are very high in the gsl ranking but not top3.

If MVP, MMA and MC take up other spots, they should just go down the GSL Ranking line as the most fair seeing. Seeing as those players were the most consistent the entire year. Which would be Polt, then MKP, and then, if they need another spot due to MVP dominating everything, July.
There's going to be so much redunancy with the slots. MVP already has first place GSL and Blizzcon, and will most likely pick up 1 of the spots from Providence and easily WCG.

it's a win, but i don't consider it a major tournament win personally i think that IEM NYC was also a bad call to select for the criteria, DRG got to coast into qualifying for the tournament
but the difference there, is that with IEM NYC, it was announced before the fact, which is the only reason DRG skipped MLG, to guarantee himself the invite into the blizzard cup
for guangzhou, there were some strong foreigners, but no code s koreans, so its harder to justify
hopefully idra will just win something big, or at least pull something like be runner up vs someone who already qualified

Rather than just plain inviting Idra or Huk due to redundancy, I'd rather see them base the invite off either MLG Orlando or Guangzhou instead of IEM NY and find another player to invite for redundancy.

They could also invite the #4/5 GSL seed player (which is probably the most fair way to do it). But they don't make it clear how they're going to decide and just said that they'll invite "suitable replacements", so yea.
IMO since MVP and Nestea already have spots due to being 1st and 2nd in GSL points, they should give the Blizzcon spot to the guy who was 3rd at Blizzcon, Sen.

Yeah, and ironically MMA, MC, Polt are 3rd, 4th and 5th in GSL championship points anyway. From a logistical point of view also it makes the most sense because those players are already there, so there's no need to confirm with them last minute and rush them over.

Even though the GSL spot player will most likely be a better player, I think Sen as the Blizzcon representative will be a better thing as it's more diversity to the players at the Blizzard Cup.

If GOM wanted Koreans they could have just kept the Blizzard Cup in its original format and invited the top 10 in GSL points. Clearly they changed the format to broaden the Blizzard Cup's appeal. Sen isn't that far away anyways since Taiwan is only a 3 hours long flight from Seoul. Sen is world class at ZvZ and ZvP so it's not like he'd be outmatched. He's 2-0 against MC and 4-0 against Naniwa in the past month.

MMA has to beat Oz to pass MC's GSL points. Currently MC has 9115 and MMA has 9048. It's a shame, I would much rather see both at the Blizzard Cup.

Everything but the finals from both him and Naniwa are amazing games and should be watched, both guys were monsters with leenock having more chances to show off to a bigger international crowd ^-^.
lol I want Nestea and Naniwa in the same group for this just for more ( fun and civil) rivalry. Also more protoss is needed.
Wow, right on the tail of Providence I find out that Dreamhack starts this Thursday, GSL November is still ongoing, Proleague starting soon, WCG in early december, and SoCal regionals mid December, Apex 2012 in January/ How awesome is it that we live in a time where there's always something to watch as far as e-sports goes?
Edit: Wow, I feel so dense. Got so caught up in how much is going on even at the end of the year that I forgot to mention the event that's in the thread title. So much great pro gaming content every weekend, and so many people working hard to always make it better. Much love and appreciation to everybody putting effort in. :D
Edit 2: Almost forgot NASL in early December as well.
Looking at the approach GomTv is taking, im going to assume they are trying to make this event more global.
Which means, given the number of koreans currently in (5 Koreans vs 2 Foreigners), and the likelihood that Koreans will probably win one, if not both Dreamhack winter and WCG. I think its more likely that they will assign the invite to a foreign player.
Who will that be?
I'd say huk is the highest on the list, due to his performance, fanbase, and his loyalty to the GSL.
Idra is also possible, due to the fact that whenever he's there, the viewership jumps upwards by 20k, but given his persona and his relationship with GSL (forfeited Code S not a big deal, but still), Huk is probably more likely.
After that its all free call, MC is possible if he doesn't get the invite from being ranked third (because all the love he gets); Thorzain or White-ra is possible, because their skill and reputation; winner of GSL Nov is possible, because that would be the best player going into Dec.; Sen is also possible, because how frequently he places at top of these tournaments, right after MVP/Nestea/MC.
Lastly, I think a 5-5 foreigner Korean split would be awesome, of course they need to earn it, but with the recent improvement in results, I'd argue they already did. 6-4 split is good, since Koreans ARE still better at the moment. 7-3 would take a lot of from a global tournament, since the korean-foreigner rivalry is what brings the show.

Well lets look at it objectively. Looking at the invite system right now, We know so far:

Yeah if Sen gets the invite it will be 50% Zerg and could get worse with the other tournament results left this year.
But would HuK or IdrA give up a spot at NASL finals just for Blizzard Cup? You have the admit that the former has some easier competition with the same prize pool.
On November 21 2011 22:34 Ganseng wrote: well technically sen must be granted a spot. another zerg? and so what? that's how it is. the year of terrans being "op".
Well technically nothing is granted for sen. He is not Blizzcon champion so he is on the waiting list along with
-4th ranked player in GSL because Mvp can be placed in the Blizzcon champion spot (and that will free a spot for a gsl player) -DH or WCG 2nd if MVP, Nestea, Stephano, DRG, Naniwa or Leenock win one of these tournament (and if one of these players win both WCG and DH it will be even more complicated)
MMA can still make it if he wins his match against Oz. But I'd rather not because I like MC more :\
Blizzcon Qualifier, well we have Sen(who might not attend due to NASL). 4th place is Naniwa but he alreay has a spot... So yeah Blizzcon must be pretty hard to chose. I guess it could go to 4th place in GSL points but I am not too sure who got 5th and 6th at Blizzcon(Maybe Ret? Dunno stupid liquidpedia doesn't have the bracket)
And oh well WCG and DH are not done.
I am super happy that Leenock made it. And despite all the QQing and whine it seems Zergs are doing pretty fine.

It will be Mr Chae's decision
1st place has the spot, 2nd place has the spot, so the spot is to be granted to the 3rd place... correct me if i'm wrong.

MVP won 2 spots, you could make a case for either passing it down to the next highest player in either the GSL or Blizzcon. I'd much rather see it go to MC or MMA, that way we'd have 1-4 in GSL points and more racial diversity.
Plus I don't think Sen holds a candle to MC or MMA.

i don't understand it, gsl will provide three players anyways, i think it's exactly the right number. gsl is the toughest tournament but i don't think it represents more than 30 % of the professional scii scene. and you can never be sure with these zergies what they are capable of :D
and @ the guys saying that mvp might be granted a spot as blizzcon champion, he's already granted a spot as number one in the gsl, according to the tab on the page 1.
edit: but mr. chae says just that "suitable replacements will be found", so it's really up to him whom to invite and we can only speculate.
Well, it's probably MC and MMA, although I REALLY don't think MC deserves it as of late. His last success was so long ago, I think a better replacement would be AOL 1 winner and WCG qualifier runner up MKP.

Why would they need to give up NASL finals? According to liquipedia NASL finals are Dec 2-4th, Blizzard cup is Dec 12-17? Seems quite easy to do both. Especially since Idra should be going to korea by then (and obviously HuK is there).

Hasn't blizzcon finished ages ago (all be it MVP and NesTea won it and theres 1st and 2nd on rankings)
Gief idra one of the spots and it will be set :W
The news announcement on GOM's website clearly states that MVP and Nestea were #1 and #2 at Blizzcon but because they already have GSL slots #1 and #2, it is still TBA because they'll find a "suitable replacement" and announce it later.

I would argue that GSL represents 50% of the pro scene. Winning a MLG/NASL/IPL/DreamHack/IEM is cool and all but none of those titles hold a flame to a GSL win. Plus, GSL is on all year round whereas the other tourneys aren't. So in terms of quantity of games and prestige GSL should be at 50%.
In terms of their goal "looking back over the year to determine the best player", I can't see them not inviting MC, MMA and MKP to fill any spots that are doubled, simply because those players have the highest claim to it out of the remaining players. Coincidentally, they're also three of the next four in GSL rankings, so I think GOM will probably use those.

Umm, there's literally no way to describe Polt as more consistent than MKP. MKP always does well, Polt doesn't. MKP just never clinches the last few games of a tournament. He's arguably one of the most consistent high level players in the game.

By 'last few games of the tournament' do you mean Ro32? Because MKP has made it to a grand total of 5 Ro32s and even got knocked down to Code A. Polt on the other hand has only got knocked out 4 times in the Ro32 (although he played 1 more Code S season than MKP).
It's ridiculous to say that MKP is more consistent than Polt when Polt has more GSL points even though he didn't participate in the World Championship.

When taking only GSL results into account, MKP and Polt are pretty close consistency-wise. The fact is well represented by their GSL point standings(although I'd argue MKP is a bit ahead, Polt's GSL ranking is inflated by the 1 championship). Also, Polt has been eliminated 5 times in the Ro32 and even once in the Ro64.
When you include results outside of GSL, MKP pulls ahead by an obvious distance.
So no, it's not "ridiculous to say that MKP is more consistent than Polt".

We're talking about 2011. Not 2010. Polt has only been eliminated in the Ro32 4 times. And I could argue the same that MKP's points has been inflated by his two 2nd places, and the World Championship which gives him an unfair advantage over Polt as Polt didn't play in it. Polt on the other hand won a 64 man tournament to earn that 5000 points.
As someone has put it, Polt has done better recently while MKP did a lot better in the past (although MKP is sort of back to form).
Having said that, I couldn't care less if Polt or MKP is invited, as long as people give Polt the due he deserves.

i really do not think there is anyway GOMTV will invite a FIFTH zerg to the blizzard cup (unless they win one of the spots). i think they will try to balance out the races as even as possible 4/3/3. but then again, looking at how they've put the invites so far, it would really be a tragedy if they didnt give the blizzcon invite to Sen.

The GSL players are just better, the only reason they don't dominate foreign tournaments 100% of the time is they don't get to prepare for each specific player. There's a reason 90% of code A seeds drop out in the RO32.
When I watch a tournament I want to see the best players in the world, those are the GSL players. In fact the only reason I bother to watch MLG and the like is to watch the Koreans. I feel like watching a tournament of just foreigners is like watching people fight over the position of best player in the Bronze League.
So what I get atm is that MMA should get MC's spot if he wins tomorrow right? I don't know how m uch more point you get for Ro4, but given that MC got 330 points less than MMA for one round and only needs less than a houndred to make it, he should be fine. If that's the case I'll cheer hard for Oz tomorrow

I think this should be set. IMO inviting a player who won an invitational tournament is not fair to other players, I'm talking about the blizzcon, IMO the rest of the players who were not invited didn't got the same fair chances.

Blizzcon isn't completely invitational though, you have to go through qualifiers to get there, and in KR case, best all-time GSL scorers were invited, so it's still not random invites.

Well the two people who won it, were invited because of their GSL ranking - which is a hell of a qualification. And Sen is without one of the bes tplayers in the world, so I don't see what the problem is.
Things look to be shaping up nicely, confirmed players have two weeks to get back into prime condition and figure out what the hell they plan to do. Given the high caliber play all those current qualified can provide we should get some great games. That said I think group stage and the bracket from there will do a lot to determine the winner.
Bearing some incredible miracle managing to beat MVP at WCG (pun not intended), looks like he's going to hold three spots...For WCG, they should just give to the runner up which would be most likely Supernova or MKP, whic would work out because this tournament needs more terrans.
As for the Blizzcon...it seems unjust to give the spot to sen..Yes he's the next runner up..but only after Nestea and Naniwa..MMA I think would be the one to take this spot...
.So essentially the ideal line up: Terrans MVP MMA MKP/Supernnova
Zergs: DRG Nestea Stephano Leenock

It would be much easier to give MVP the Blizzcon spot, and then just invite the 2nd, 3rd and 4th in GSL points, which would be Nestea, MC and MMA respectively.

it would be hilarious if MVP won WCG, and Mr Chae decides to give him three seeds where he beats all his competitors and ends up taking 3 of the 4 Top 4 seeds walking away with a cool 55k of the 68k prize total. Problem Gom?

But you were suggesting that they give the spot to WCG runner up if MVP wins. Personally, I do agree with you though, 4th (and 5th if MVP wins WCG as well) GSL ranked player should be invited. Blizzard Cup was meant to be Top 10 GSL players initially anyway and then every Korean was kinda pissed that GOM changed it suddenly (although the new format is better).
I still firmly believe that the next ranked GSL players should go through though which means I'm rooting for MMA and Polt/WCG winner to go through.

I have to agree with light on this. MMA's GSL points are ridiculously close to MC's. I think it'd be fair to give MMA the slot with the main credential being his GSL point ranking.

Sen was 3rd at Blizzcon ahead of Naniwa. Also if you read the thread about the WCG groups apparently thanks to random bad luck the Koreans are going to meet each other before the finals so it's not likely to be MKP or Supernova unfortunately.

Sorry for being nitpicky but in that case I agree, it was just how it was originally worded it was giving MMA the blizcon spot which would be absurd
That's a total of 5 players, who will be filling up 4 spots. Now, there are numerous ways too look at this:
From a purely preformance point of view it would make sens to have either MVP or Nestea take the Blizzcon seed and give the third GSL seed to MMA. There is little doubt that MMA has achieved more than Sen during the last year. Another good argument for MMA is the racial balance. With only 1 Terran currently qualified and already 4 Zergs ready for the action it would make sense to bring in another T. The fact that MMA was a single game away from earning his spot through the yearly ranking points makes it tough not to acknowledge that he should be "next in line".
On the other hand: MMA didn't make the top 3. Sure, Sen didn't win Blizzcon either, but he was only beat by players who were already qualified (I believe it was impossible for both MVP and Nestea to bumped down to 4th, but I might be wrong). Also, with GSLs wish to promote foreign participation, this is definitely an opportunity to bring more diversity to the Cup.
At the end of the day, though, I believe MMA should get the seed, if only for the already dominating amount of zergs qualified.

Considering the players...not really. o.O Don't base ladder zvz when you judge the quality of Sen vs Nestea for example.
1 Terran would be a serious bummer. TvX matches are the most interesting matchups.
Agreed. I play Protoss but only one Terran would not be too fun. At least MVP can be expected to make it far so we're not likely to have no Terrans in the semis.
Yeah, too many Z's would be pretty lame. It would be great to get someone like MMA in there, though it seems like the system is already established so it looks unlikely for him

In my nations soccer league when a qualifying spot for a cup winner or league placement are both taken by the same team, the qualifying spot is awarded for winning the cup and the league placement is moved a spot down. While this is not entirely similar, I do feel it makes the more sense. I mean why should a nation be punished for having stronger players?
edit: A play-off wouldn't be such a bad idea either.

Agree, anyway MMA should get a spot (small minority will flame), but Sen can play him for it as they would be a lot more flaming if he got it outright. How many people expect Sen to win? The odds should show it and if Sen pulls off the win then all power to him. GL!

I would prefer winner of NASL over 2nd place WCG. That would probably be Sen/Idra/Puma (or hero who wouldn't get it obviously). Any of those 3 would be quite welcome.
If MVP wins WCG, I really hope they invite Jjakji, it's a bit of a stretch, but very warranted. I don't know why GSL November Champion wasn't seeded into this.

No freaking way Tastosis sits out the Blizzard Cup. It's the culmination of the entire year for the GSL. 10 players, all champions of major tournaments (only Naniwa is questionable but he does have an MLG win and 2nd in the finals). And there aren't any other tournaments going on this month. Got to be tastosis casting.

Because all the hype that Naniwa got was from one weekend, and the tournament right before and after he did really poorly. Granted he did have to face off against DRG in the playoffs of dreamhack.

Only because he technically came in 2nd at MLG Providence. So his championship is from MLG Dallas which might not be considered a "major tournament". Not saying he's not deserving, but I didn't want to get into a semantic argument about "major champions".
I got the impression Blizzard CUP was meant to be a culmination of everything over the past year. With all of Naniwa's major wins apart from Dallas (which had 0 Koreans) occurring in 1 weekend only, it feels like he's just in there to get some foreign fans interested and also for extra Protoss love.

I think he's equally questionable as Stephano, or a bit more considering Stephano actually won a tournament to qualify. About MC.. I hope you're trolling, GSL has awarded long-year performance by giving invitations to Blizz cup. MC is by far the most accomplished Protoss in the world, and has 2 championships.
Were the system based around recent results, I'd agree with you, but being as it is, MC is more than deserving of the slot.

Totally fan of stephano, but Naniwa deserve it as welll he won MLG Global Invitational, you cannot say he didn't won anything to qualify. Too bad for now there is only 2 foreigner. Nerchio considering he is not a full time programmer( leaving his Polish WCG slot to Slider) deserve also a place in blizzard cup, he cleary is one of the top zerg foreigner with Stephano. And Huk, the only one who did consistent result since the beta of SC2 and finishing first in MLG Raleigh, Homestory Cup 3(where he beat Naniwa), DH Summer, MLG Orlando).
GOMTV-Blizzard need to give a spot to a foreigner if none of them win WCG(gogogo ToD). The Foreigner Fan Base community is 1000% bigger than the Koreans. It's a good reason for me. Who will be pick (Idra, Kas, Ret, White-Ra???).

I believe a foreign player could win, simply because of how much the Koreans are outnumbered, and that MVP and MKP have both shown that they can be beaten, so it's not impossible.

Naniwa wasn't invited, GSL said the top two of providence would get in the Blizzard Cup, if the top two were all korean, they would be the ones there, so in my mind, Naniwa deserved his spot.
IF they want to invite another foreigner because of all the fan base, I guess they will invite either Huk or Idra (Huk has been in GSL for a long time, won DreamHack Summer, MLG Orlando and Idra won the IEM China and got high on all the MLG's)

Naniwa was 2nd at providence, won MLG Dallas AND won the MLG Global Invitational (against MVP and Nestea in the final rounds).
I think it is fine having him there. Regardless, they said the top 2 of Providence would get a spot before the tournament even started, so it was earned.
I really hope MKP makes it in through WCG and wrecks Stephano as vengeance for ESWC and then go on to wreck NesTea for last year's 2nd place GSL Open disappointment. Then wrecking Mvp at long last for every single series he's played against him, haha.
GOGO POSSIBILITY OF MKP BEING IN BLIZZCUP AND FURTHERMORE TAKING FIRST PLACE.
I can't wait !! Btw here are my predictions for the groupstages:
Pool1:
1. MVP 2. DRG 3. Hero 4. Stephano (i don't want to put him last this is cruel TT, and i think he'll win at least one bo3 ) 5. MC (coz must be a last :'(
Pool2:
1. MMA 2. Leenock 3. Nestea (hard to place but he didn't perform well lately but he still has a great ZvZ and since it's between Leencock and him idk...) 4. Winner of WCG, MKP or Supernova 5. Naniwa because i think his builds will be analyzed, especially PvZ where he didn't show a great versatility (and i'm not fan of his BM attitude at all

Polt's great and all but he can't seem to keep up with the very tippy top of the Terrans (or goswser, haha).
What? And MarineKing can?
Polt deserves his spot in the Blizz Cup if MVP wins. He has routinely beat some of the top players in GSL, won a championship and made a semifinals. Shit, he did fall to Code A, but he lost a game he should have against Ganzi and split two games against the best ZvT'er in the world. Then he got to play ForGG.
Only person I would be okay going in front of Polt would be Jjakji since he, you know, just won GSL.
If MVP wins WCG, just have Polt, Jjakji, Puma and the runner up of WCG do a tournament before Blizzard Cup to see who gets the spot.
They should invite in priority: If Mvp wins WCG 1. Jjakji (Code S winner) 2. Puma (NASL 2 winner) 3. WCG Runner up 4. Polt (5th place GSL ranking)
If you compare the other tournaments listed, this should be the right priority; to challenge recent winners up with top ranked GSL players. Anything else would be unfair imo. I don't think inviting MMA was the right choise.

MMA was certainly the next most qualified individual to pick, having won GSL October, coming 2nd in the Super Tournament, winning MLG Columbus and 2nd at MLG Anaheim, as well as leading Slayers to GSTL titles earlier this year (2 MVP Gold Card Awards there).
Jjakji is very good, and his recent GSL win was amazing, but now we are overhyping him just as much as we overhype everyone else. Puma is very good player, but as a Korean terran he cannot compare to players like MVP or MMA. Polt is good, and had a really great series of tournaments over the summer, but now has fallen off.

Yea, but how they've chosen the picks, from huge international tournaments, Hero, DRG, Naniwa or Stephano cant be compared either to the competition they've faced in their tourneys, with the lack of so many highly ranked Koreans. (exception maybe Naniwa, but he also had less matches to play than Nestea & Mvp during Providence)
1. Hero ( on fire at the moment, would be surprised if he went 4-0) 2. Stephano (this will be the pick that gets the hate, watch his stream, even though it is ladder, he is rolling korean gm's EZ, Best play i've seen from him so far) 3. MC (Boss toss getting back his form, between him and mvp for 3rd i feel) 4. MVP(I'm not denying that he is the best sc2 player we have seen so far, but recent performances In MLG and GSL NOV have not showed this, would be surprised if he did go 4-0, but also wouldn't be if he crashes out in the groups, also dont know if he will try his hardest considering that it is the last tourny of the year.) 5. DRG ( I don't know about DRG, if he plays his best he MAY squeeze through, if not, can't see him progressing.)
Pool2:
1. MMA (my pick to win the whole thing, he has everything, can only see mabye MVP on top form taking him out) 2. MKP (hopefully ) 3.Leenock, really showed great play recently, think he can carry it on into this tournament. 4. Nestea (If he is up for it, i think he will win the whole thing, if not, can't see him getting past the groups.) 5. naniwa (showed some great play recently, but i dont think he will be that bothered about this)
1) MVP ( i m a huge fan of MVP and i think that he has the guts and the experience to pull 1 place in his group ) 2) Hero ( i was really not sure either i pu him or the next one on spot 2 but Hero is on fire right now 3) Stephano ( wasn't sure to put him so high, but after watching his stream on Korean ladder and seeing him own Koreans GM players like they are master EU i hope he will do good here ) 4) MC ( Boss toss, MC has always been solid ) 5) DRG ( i feel DRG is a up and coming zerg, sometimes very convincing sometimes not so much )
1) MMA ( Well, it's MMA one of the best terrans in the world, always very solid with a good atitude and good coaching ) 2) Leenock ( Leenock impressed me so much at providence that i expect him to do greatly the next 2 month ) 3) Nestea ( Nestea is a great player overall, but a bit sloppy right now 4) MKP ( I don't see MKP doing so greatly for quite a time so i don't think he will go far ) 5) Naniwa ( Nani is a good player but i think that he made one good run at MLG and.. that's all )
Also, MKP has been doing magnificently. It's simply that he keeps bumping into Mvp, who has beaten him every time they've met on the stage. As I was saying, hopefully he figures it out and comes out on top.
Hero is dominating foreign players, not koreans. Same with Stephano. How you guys are putting them above Code S players is honestly mind boggling. (I can understand>DRG, MKP and mayyyyybe Nestea, but lol@over MVP...)

I dont think Naniwa knows the meaning of that. If hes in this, he's in it to win. No question about that. Thats some scary players he will be faceing though, i can see anyone of these guys take this.

Hero go 4-0 in that group...what? He just lost again in Code A to even asd and you think he's going to beat MVP? Not to mention MC who also got the best of Hero in their meeting at Orlando.

Nestea must hate his group, or love depending on how he views revenge. MMA has bested Professer Tea a few times, NaNiWa beat him twice at Providence, and Leenock is the new rising Zerg King that could potentionally defeat Nestea at his best matchup.
Each group is really hard to call though. I'm not feeling HerO chances and Stephano has had moments of weakness. One thing is for certain on group one - MC will get everyone riled up by how good his play is, then promptly lose a key match, and MVP will look like he'll lose everything and will still somehow end up as the first place finisher in his group.
According to today's GSL Code A interview with oGsMC, it will be BO1 format, so that introduces a great volatility and a much bigger chance for upsets. I can't say I like it very much, but it might have been too many games otherwise.
Whatever, I'd have liked the qualified players to duke it out in a bit more games after working so hard for the entire year. It would have been a bit more chances to prove yourself among the best of the best.
I already knew it was BO1 when they decided to do the groups, 1 in each day... but come on, it is a dissapointment.
They should have extended this tournament alot more, do atleast 2 days per group and bo3, the prizemoney isn't a AoL filler time.
This should have been alot better organized and a better experience for the viewers, BO1 with 10 players in a tournament is just BAD! Horrible format.
They could have invited 12 players instead of 10, (NASL + ESWC was big enough to warrant that (or extend more GSL slots)), and do 4 groups of 4, then 1 group per day, BO3 round robin. That would be a good format. this guys dont learn that BO1 in a 32 player is bad enough that they shouldn't do it, even worse in a shorter tournament, or, cant they see that?

So does PuMa have a shot at an invitation? Seems like there's at least one open spot because of Mvp and Nestea taking the top 2 GSL points slot and theres a blizzcon champion invite.. So I'm thinking PuMa would at least be considered since he took 2nd at Dreamhack and 1st at the NASL.

The Blizzcon spot went to MMA who is 4th in GSL points. There is only one possibility for another free spot, that is, if MVP wins World Cyber Games 2011.
But even then, it has to be a player who is available on very short notice, because WCG ends very shortly before Blizzard Cup starts. Puma will be home from NASL by then, probably, but I think they'd still go with the next guy in GSL points or the WCG runner-up.

Very disappointing to find out it's only Bo1 for group play. It will not be indicative in showing the best players out of group play. Map dependant as well.
However it will be interesting to see the build choices made by players in a Bo1. You can't really call it who will come out of group play in a Bo1, when all players in the list can take games off each other.
if MVP wins WCG, I propose a four man tournament between WCG 2nd place, Polt (5th in points), Jjakji (November winner) and Puma to decide the final slot. Air it before the first round of games or the day before. Ratings everywhere.

Think the last spot will be either: Polt, MKP, Jjakji, or Supernova.
MKP/Supernova if they just take the 2nd place of WCG.
Polt if they continue to go by points.
Jjakji (recent champ) or MKP if Mr.Chae just wants to grab attention with an exciting player.

I don't get this. If you have a boX that's tied and you have a deciding game, are you saying it's more likely that either player will all-in than in previous games? If anything it's less likely you see all-ins as in a bo3+ as you can still win even if you fail with an all-in while you don't have that luxurary in a bo1. Sure a bo1 is more volatile but I don't see how it has anything to do with all-ins.
And it's quite clear in the op how you make a playoff out of 6 players. Read it again.

But that would not be fair. They have already announced long ago what were the qualifications for the tournament. Puma is good, but he technically did not qualify and NASL winner does not get a seed (maybe in a perfect world, but alas). Jjakji was really impressive during the finals, but the only major tournament he has ever competed in has been the GSL and he is not ranked high enough either.
Either way, I am taking a wait and see approach. Who knows, maybe MVP might not win WCG.
I was so excited about this. But damn this bo1 format is so painful... I understand that that the 10 Best of "N" required by a 5 players groupstage takes time if N>1, but there were plenty of alternatives... Two days groupstage (and ro6 and ro4 the same day to compensate a bit) 3 groups of less players Not streaming every game or two stream + vods Long stream ... Those alternatives are not perfect but imo the most important thing about this tournament was that we would see the best of the best compete to know who is the best player of 2011. And with bo1 format, we are lacking this point.

The blizzard seed is revoked because the two top finishers already qualified. I have a feeling if there were no zergs in this tournaments, GOM would have given the seed to Sen but seeing as how Sen is a worse player than MMA (Both in terms of skill and marketibility) they chose MMA.

Why do people rage about bo1 groups? Starcraft champions have blasted through bo1 groups for the past decade.
Besides, bo1 groups exposes each participant to a wide variety of players given the time constraint, making sure that one player doesn't get by with a few snipe builds or one solid match up out of three. It really selects the most well rounded and strongest players to get through.

I think it wouldn't be as bad if the maps were more balanced. I mean MC really did get fucked with the maps, playing PvZ on Dual sight and Crossfire for bo1s while Hero gets Daybreak and Shakuras...Seriously how fair is that?

Because in BW a bo1 was more safe, the "luck" was less important than in SC2.

I'm sorry, are you saying that bo1 is fine, since it WON'T make good players go out to snipe builds? What? - How does that even make sense? If anything, bo1 encourages snipe builds.
No, really, make the group stage games bo3, loser picks map. It's fair, and it's not that much longer than bo1 - besides, to use your own point against you, if bo1 "really selects the most well rounded and...blah" then certainly bo3 must do that even more.

There's a limited amount of time to play the games.
If the groups were indeed bo3s, then the groups should have less players (maybe groups of four instead of seven), to compensate, and with more groups, less players from each group will advance to play offs (maybe one out of four rather than two out of seven).
Will this Blizzard Cup take place in studio? Or will it be an online thing where we don't get to see the players? If it's like those AOL tournaments where people are playing from home and even the casters are doing it in their pyjamas somewhere I think I'll pass.
Still trying to decide on year pass. $99 one looks not too bad. I really do need mobile access as the iPad is my #1 device for watching GSL while washing dishes or cooking in the kitchen. I wish it included the GSTL and other tournaments but I guess I'll have to pass on those...
It is a pleasure to have so many champions togehter in this cup tournament. But it sucks that in the group stage it is a BO1. Bo1 will not tell you much, especially considered that they are all great players. I mean they can get destroyed in one game, but recover and dominate their opponent easily in the next game. This is a bit disppointing.

I simply just disagree with you. More groups with 4 players, where top2 advances (as is the norm!!) in a bo3 setting would be far better than WCG's current system. Then again, I've never had any faith in WCG.

MVP already 6-0 his bo1 stage, and most of the favorite players made it too, bo1 system in group of 8 players isnt that bad, some upsets happen because in 6x bo1 every game counts and you need to play safe not greedy or risky. So WCG group stage rewards well-rounded players that like to play safe and dont get unstable after 1 lose to cheese (e.x Idra)

Not much longer than bo1? With a bo3 round robin you will have anywhere between 10-20 more games, which would easily double the total playtime

Well I bought the yearly no ads pass for GSL, so free BLIZZ CUP :D
Being watching Stephano's streams in Korea. not a fan of him, but I'm impressed. I think both Naniwa and Stephano have a really strong style, that might just beat the players in their group, especially since its BO1.
I jumped on the bandwagon of "Stephano will start losing once he gets figured out", without doing any research on him . Seem to me he knows his own weaknesses and always have something to counter, if it gets abused.
A BO 1 makes all those matches just a coin flip I mean you may as well just cheese every game since no one has any chance to adapt to anything you tried. Any player can lose 1 game no matter how good they are even a BO 3 sometimes is a little random still.
i highly doubt BO1 make games a 50/50 coin flip. I also doubt players at these calibers won't be able to put the thought process of them might being cheesed ESPECIALLY if that person did one or more beforehand.
if all tournaments, makes it a best of 7. MVP will probably have won all 7 of the major tournaments. Which makes the sc2 scene very boring, Bo1 gives the underdog a chance hence its awesome for the viewers to watch.
I am rooting for the foreigners, dnt know why, maybe cause i'm mad that the netizens were hating on MKP and SuperNova losses in the WCG cause their "national pride" got hurt <.< (just want to show them, their pride shouldnt be hurt cause we have good dynamic players in the foreign scene to never cause that). besides that i think its good for the sc2 scene outside korea, theres more interest and passion from the fans here from what i'd collected from watching MLG, IPL and others.

It's gonna be amazing, but it's just sad to think about how much better this could have been. It's the end of a great first real year of SC2 and to finish it with a bang, Gom is hosting a tournament featuring the best-of-the-best. This even includes a couple of 'foreigners', qualifying through tournament results, not by invitation, and we could hardly have guessed who it would be at the start of 2011. An excellent chance to look back at the year and to make a big show with great matches between incredibly talented players. So, how to decide who's the champion of the year, who wears the crown of 2011?

No you don't get anything else, and the current Code S/A is over already.
you can buy blizz cup individually i think, or you can buy GSL 2012 yearly pass and get blizz cup for free. With ads are $100 and No ads are $140. i'd bought the latter.

Up and Down matches are considered the start of a season now and are part of GSL January 2012, not GSL November 2011.
Since the current Blizzard Cup schedule has been determined long time ago, I would hope such a epic tournament in the future (e.g. Blizzard Cup 2012) will have an expanded format. Since it'll take longer, maybe take 2 weeks to finish.
bo3 group stages with each group taking 2 days to finish.

4. Nestea (If he is up for it, i think he will win the whole thing, if not, can't see him getting past the groups.) 5. naniwa (showed some great play recently, but i dont think he will be that bothered about this)

called it, knew nani was scum.
You also called Hero and Stephano 1-2 ~.~
His Group A predictions are literally reversed. So awesome.
