Leave off the casterbashing please. ~Nyovne |

This is supposed to be a strategy game, and high level too, we are constantly reminded of it. So why have a caster who knows less than most of the audience and adds nothing, just states the obvious and points out the supply now and then (the bad casters usual crutch). I bet if you took away obs mode the casting would be even more wrong. Unless we state our disapproval nobodies going to enact a change; saying no criticism is just avoiding the issue. And please nobody come up with the excuse 'it's for the players with lesser knowledge' because somebody simply telling you whats happening is no more noob-friendly than any other caster. It's just a detriment onto my enjoyment frankly when we have big money tournaments with top level players and then this over the top of it. If you are not giving ANY analysis in the cast of a strategy game then what is the point? I really don't know how to explain this.. People who's first experience in watching sports/esports is GSL might expect all commentary to be in the style of Tastosis. However, both Tasteless and Artosis (GRATS daddytosis) have the ability to both play-by-play and color commentate because they are both articulate and knowledgeable. TB and D.Apollo are much more like traditional broadcasters.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play-by-play#Types_of_sports_broadcasters
Play-by-play announcers are the primary speakers, valued for their articulateness and ability to describe the events of an often fast-moving contest. Color commentators are valued for experience and insight into the game, and are often asked questions by the play-by-play announcer to give them a topic for analysis. The latter most often have gained their experience in the sport as a player and/or coach, while the former is more likely to be a professional broadcast journalist than a participant in the sport, although there are numerous exceptions to these general trends. + Show Spoiler + In the United Kingdom however there is a much less distinct division between play-by-play and color commentary, although two-man commentary teams usually feature an enthusiast with formal journalistic training but little or no competitive experience leading the commentary, and an expert former (or current) competitor following up with analysis or summary. This is pretty much the way MOST broadcasting works and I don't see a problem with major tournaments using it. Are you against this type of broadcast or against TB? If people have issues with TB's play-by-play or D.Apollo's analysis perhaps fans should start supporting viable replacements (that don't need to be flown all the way from Korea or USA). If the issue is that we as a community would rather see more emphasis on analytic commentary instead of the traditional play-by-play with color then we as a community should make THAT point known. Simply "bashing" casters/styles will ignored by most professional (tournament) organizations. + Show Spoiler + seriously, if you have complaints, learn to suggest solutions or you will just sound like a crybaby - - this will help a LOT in life (not directed at the person I quoted)
Also, I have yet to see hate on D.Apollo's analysis so what's the point of your last statement?

Personally, I really prefer having a broadcaster and an analyst in the booth over having two analysts, which is just redundant.

Can someone explain why HuK was eliminated from the get go? Because he lost 3-1 and it's single elim? I can look up the score. I was asking for something specific such as, "he started off well, but Elfi did some amazing shit and outplayed him," or, "HuK wasn't feeling good that day but played anyways," or, "HuK just wasn't HuK in those games...." or, "Elfi is a very underrated player, a lot of people believed he would take down HuK." Specifics please :/ "Elfi is a very underrated player, a lot of people who have seen his PvP believed he could take down HuK" AKA "Elfi is the current flavor of the month hidden gem that Europeans are currently desperately clinging to."
Lol Elfi has been good for a long time, and done well at lans before. But I guess you think you know everything and you dont need to check info before spewing shit =]?

Common guys, TB is awesome, ok, he might not be the BEST at the game, but he does say stuff that makes sense. Other than that, he is a great commentator. I'm masters league at SC2 and, to be honest, i don't need any comentator to tell me what's happenning and explain the strategies. I don't need it, however, I LOVE it, just because that's the way sports are better to watch. It's better to have any kind of commentary behind it.
Also, there are feel caster out there that can actually do a better play-by-play than TB, he also has great voice and great pronunciacion (duh he is english). And dAppollo is a great analitical caster himself so as long as TB is paired with a good analytical caster do actually do a meaninfull analysis, I don't see ANY problem whatsoever.

I've heard all about this play by play and color bullshit before, but you simply do NOT need a play by play caster in Starcraft. I don't even particularly like Artosis or Tasteless, but least they are knowledgeable about the game and the scene, and the history/background... i don't know the alternatives because they keep recruiting the same casters for every tournament.

Would've loved to have seen the idra / white-ra games, or the finals, but was just turned off enough by some of the production decisions made to not want to watch it live or via VODs.
Nonetheless, grats Idra!!!

Play-by-play commentators aren't meant to be heavily divisive either, they're meant to be neutral enough to keep the focus on the action rather than someone like TB who is incredibly love/hate. It's not uncommon to have that sort of divisive style/personality as a colour guy or a post-game analysis type person (with someone typically on the opposite side of whatever spectrum they divide), but that's not what's happening.
It's also really weird that people constantly refer to sports commentary like it's a golden example of how to do it, as if there aren't incredibly divisive sports commentators (see some of the commentators of UK F1 coverage over the years). There's really no reason to support this approach when we can do better and there are people ready to do so. The silly thing about divisive commentators is that as long as they have a vocal fanbase for their antics, once they've done one big event they're heavily legimitised in the eyes of tournament organisers, whether it's earned or not, regardless if there are better options available. They're not necessarily going to look into much other than looking at a list of people who have done similar events before. That's why complaining and making a fuss is necessary too, because if it's persistant enough it eventually filters through and the tournament organisers end up making more informed decisions.
Anyhoo hella glad Idra took it, can't wait for Providence now.

The problem with comments like this is it shows that you're devoid of any understanding as to how present sports to an audience and it's difficult to take you seriously. That and your whole stomping of the feet "enact change" thing smacks of "my way or the highway". Change is not enacted because you have a minority opinion and seem to believe that a team consisting entirely of analysts is a good idea. You are entitled to your opinion but you cant expect everyone to agree with it. I mean come on guy, you expressed dislike for Tastosis and can't even name a casting team you enjoy, that's the very definition of minority opinion right there.

ASUS ROG event within Digiexpo was organized fine, the seats were a bit rough on your buttocks after hours of sitting. It was really nice to see some of the top foreigner players perform at the stage. And the home crowd got their consolation prize with Elfi getting the 3rd place.
Idra's performance was as solid as the recent results predicted. Select has picked up his game a lot in Korea, but apparently facing Leenock and other FXO zergs weren't enough to prepare him for the Gracken. TvZ is still his weakest matchup.
Man, White-Ra was a little under the weather for whole day (Day 2) from what you could pick from his performance. He did leave pretty quick after loss to Elfi. (to his credit, he was giving autographs between semis and 3rd place match. And was giving them along with photos after first day as well) I think he was a bit tired since he needs his preparation to be in the top shape. And that game on first day was at late hours.
Peliliiga crew along with Tonttu as interviewer did a decent job. His English is not perfect and he was stumbling on words but they did otherwise an OK job. A foreign host could be an option, but these guys are putting their heart into it, so I gotta give it to them. It's shame that Peliliiga couldn't secure a larger location for the audience, since as mentioned before there was some 100 odd people watching the finals at the sides of the stage. The seat area had some 100 seats.
TB's casting really suits live events excellently since he can pump up the audience. I'm really starting have more and more respect for dApollo for the background work he puts in and analysis he can deliver to balance out the cast. This casting pairing, common from other sports, seems to fit the e-sports scene pretty smoothly as well; especially while casting to a more "common-knowledged" audience.
As a whole, it was a solid tournament with some clitches on the production side, but the casting crew is great for the present audience, and a good prize pool ensures large names at the scene. Hopefully the show matches will turn out interesting as well.
PS. White-Ra is a really really nice guy, no wonder he is so liked all over.

Do you have to have tickets or can you just show up to Digiexpo and buy tickets there? I'm in Helsinki right now and am I correct there will be showmatches at 10.30 local time? :o

Long as you can get into the Digiexpo, you can watch. in Hall 4 I dunno if you can get them at the venue but it's worth a try, Sunday should be less busy than Saturday.
|
Tickets are 14 euros. Digiexpo is Hall 5 in Helsinki Convention Centre (Helsingin Messukeskus/Helsingfors Mässcentrum). You can buy tickets at entrance. No addition fee is charged for the seats or entrance to Digiexpo area. The ticket also covers entrance to other expo areas that are held simultanously.

so showmatches are 10:30 EET?
