Taiwanese(Hokkien) and Chinese(Mandarin) are very very similar. Besides Mandarin is the second language to most people in Taiwan. last time I checked Mandarin was the first language. Taiwanese isnt even taught in school there.
Actually, students in Taiwan are required to learn, outside of Mandarin, Taiwanese (Hokkien), Hakka, or an aboriginal language.
Also, the difference between two Chinese dialects (take Mandarin and Cantonese, or Mandarin and Taiwanese) is bigger than the difference between Spanish and French.
