FXOpen presents the third 64-player invitational tournament in their latest series of invitational events, the FXOpen Invitational Series. This format continues the prizepool of $1500 cash.
The tournament will be a three-day, 64 player invitational/qualification event with a $1500 prizepool, distributed 900/400/200. The 64 players will compete in a best-of-three double elimination competition. Round 1 matchups will be based on rough 'seedings' gathered from previous tournament events and other scene activity. Map determination will be via vetoe. Tournament UB and LB finals will be Bo5, and the final will be up to 2 x Bo5.
First place takes $900 Second place takes $400 Third place takes $200
Prizes are in Australian Dollars ($AUD) which are roughly equivalent to US$
In addition to cash prizes, players who participate in our invitational series will accrue ladder points directly towards invites for future LAN events with much bigger prizepools.

The reason for no qualifiers for this event is in order to not over extend ourselves, and make both events run smoothly. But we will be announcing qualifiers again soon.
Yes its back to 3 days, last time it was 2 days and it seemed like hell that you guys stayed up til 4 am EST time. It won't take as long for the event, last time there were many disconnects that made the tournament extra long.
I felt sorry for Supernova having to wait like 2-3 hours for his opponent in the Grand Finals.
I very much like Taiwanese people, and have many Taiwanese friends, but why does it have the Taiwanese flag on the 'Chinese' stream =P even if it's a Taiwanese caster, it should be a Chinese flag. Just my opinion, I know my Taiwanese friends would agree. ANYWAYS, psyched to see this play out ;D First two were awesome except a lot of players I was rooting for ended up not playing.... Hope this one's a huge success ^___^

Initially I had the Chinese flag on there as as that is the language that is being cast (just like the British flag for English cast despite the casters being Aussie and American) but it was requested that the Taiwanese flag to represent the caster and not the language be used. As it's a sensitive issue that I have no weight of opinion on I am going to leave it to the request of the caster himself
No one would give a damn even if a football club flag is being used so please don't bring politics into the game we all love. It will not help to further promote this game. Flag or not, it's good enough as long as we all know there will be a chinese cast.
Super excited as usual, a number of decent players already confirmed
Been wading through Kitty's replay pack, and goddamn he's good. Didn't get to catch many of his games last time so hope to see a few live this time. Obviously happy to see SeleCT already confirmed too ^^

BTW bl on getting Ace round 1 in Sydney mate haha. Don't think I got to meet you there?
Oh wow I totally watched that but it slipped my mind, hah, he has to pick a name and stick with it Been slowly going through his replay pack, (especially liked the game against Deth :>) and he's beasting it pretty hard.
I didn't even know you were at NRG! I would've liked to have put a face behind the name, hah, maybe next one hey? :D I loved that I was up against Ace first round actually, seeing how you rank up to such a high calibre player is awesome, I was alittle disappointed he MC'd me (cancel fast expand into 4gate ) and even saw it coming but eh, lesson learned!
Oh man this is gonna be epic. The FXOpen is definitely the most underrated tournament for sure. While not every top player participates, the lineups are deep and provides relative unknowns to make a name for themselves. Can't wait to see the rest of the invite list.

Most FXO players should be participating if we feel they are up to the level of competition.

Team Immunity, well known in Australian eSports scene but nothing notable in SC2 yet - it was mOOnGLaDe's old team.
ONE.NamhciR, TLAF-Liquid`HayprO and DuskBin.F91 get invites or re-invites! The invites will keep coming, if you think someone deserves one or you know someone who does them PM me with previous results, why you think they deserve an invite, etc. Don't get too disheartened if you don't manage an invite though as the list of re-invites for people who did well last time is quite big!
FXOpens are one of a handful of tournaments I actually schedule around. The quality of players across all three major servers definitely produce some epic games, and it's all live. Keep up the good work guys.

I would like some. Namchir, (duskbin is that sen?). Thanks!
F91 from DuskBin was one of the best BW players outside of Korea and we don't get to see much of the Chinese players. They did well enough last event to earn an re-invite.
NamhciR got to a qualifier final last event and is the ace player for his team.

Hmm, if that's the rationale, I'm kinda curious about how good the Nv clan in China is, since they seem to be ripping it at the top of the Chinese ladder. NvXiaot is at the top of that ladder (albeit SC 2 was only released this week in China) with a 90% win rate, followed by NvComm and NvMacSed, both with 75+% win rates. Are you in contact with any members from Nv (which I think is probably Nirvana, an eSports sponsor in China)?
Good job FXO. As someone who heavily works in the FX industry, I'm very impressed that you chose to venture into ESPORTS and other "non-mainstream" things like that FXO drift event!

Really love these tournaments, one of a very few places we get to see Koreans outside of GSL/GSTL. Was great to watch Supernova mature from a decent showing in #1 to winning #2 to placing second in Code A and an eventual Code S spot. Hope StC does the same, his military obligation is up soon isn't it?

Yeah, it was a shame that he couldn't make the last one due to some software issues. The hilarious part is, his first round match was Kitty (Juan) due to him being the first seed, and Kitty being the last. There's a good chance had STC played, Kitty wouldn't have made the top 6 even with the loser's bracket.
As for Supernova, I think more familiarity with cross-server lag has something to do with his vastly superior performance as well. I watched his games from Open #1, and he played absolutely horribly - it's hard to believe that he would have improved so much since then into Code A, and then into Open #2. The fact that STC (who played many foreign tournaments in Beta I believe) plays so well in these foreign tournaments shows that once you get used to the slightly higher lag, it's possible to play normally.
Btw, is it possible to get some Koreans from other teams into these? I'd love to see the players from IM and Slayers in here - unless it clashes with the GSL schedule?
On April 09 2011 01:17 antilyon wrote: STCplaying makes me happy. Awesome roster as usual from FXO, any chance of getting players from Startale or Slayers this time?
Those two are definite possibilities Will try my best, but of course it's an international tournament and I don't want to flood it with Koreans so that Koreans are the top16 positions haha. Also we run out of lent NA accounts and remembering who is who gets really hard T_T

As another person said, we're only ~1/3 of the way through invites
Also, the Copenhagen Games finishes on the same night that our tournament starts, so it may be very hard for a number of the Europeans to attend sadly. If worst comes to worst, we invite more Koreans and NA players - not too bad I think.

imba.FXOpen is the Eastern European branch of FXOpen e-Sports.
World Elite is one of the biggest Chinese teams, and is sponsored by Gigabyte. Think of their relationship with Prime as similar to the TL-oGs relationship.
One of the best thing you guys got going for you is the constant attention to the community; activity on the forums, jumping in on the threads all the time - it's great to see

imba is basically a clan from Eastern Europe that FXOpen picked up as a sponsor independent to it's NA/Australia-based FXOpen e-Sports team. Unless I am mistaken, it's more like a clan with a major sponsor (sixjax/NrG for example) with some FXOpen staff helping with management rather than the FXO you are familiar with on the NA server, which is basically the FXOpen company's own team.

There's F91 too, and last time his teammate way was involved. The WE/Prime members did well and earned themselves a re-invite I really hope breek does well because unfortunately as is the case when the representative player of a minor SC2 country plays the whole SC2 scene of that country is based on how he plays

Agreed, would love to see EmpireKas and EmpireHappy invited, especially Happy who just seems to be getting more and more dominant, a really impressive player that hasn't had a whole lot of exposure yet outside of ESL tournies, has amazing ladder stats atm too

Wow your European invite list just gave me nerd chills seriously.. that would be INSANE!
Great list, but I can honestly say I look forward to seeing new talent. I mean really... does MC have to be in every tournament??
Well, he was in our last tournament
Lots of European players (and MC and TheWinD) will be at the Copenhagen Games LAN on the first day of our tournament, so some may decline to play which is sad, but I'm sure we'll have plenty of quality replacements.
happy birthday del! yours is quite close to mine on the 6th : ) Glad to see you're still being very active in the community, thanks for all the stuff you organise! :D Tourney's looking great, hope it goes well
On April 12 2011 23:47 Newguy wrote: How do you qualify? It says it is an invitational/qualifier?
They have qualifiers for some of the tournaments in the series, but not this one. Apparently FXO are trying to get their KOTH competition up and running as well, and they don't have time to do that and organise qualifiers. However, some of the invitees are players who just missed out on qualifying in the previous tournament in the series.

And judging by the big events-list, Thorzain will be at The Gathering.
A little bit of a weird line up for me so far. Usually I have around 10 top EU-players to root for. This time I see none of them. As most of them will be at Copenhagen and a few at The Gathering I don't think that will fill up in my favour with the last invites, but we'll see.
What server is this played on? I've watched the last few FXO tournaments and there have been 0 complaints, despite both korean and US players in the tournament. What's the secret :O
Glad to see some fOu players on the invites list. They're probably the least heralded Korean team besides Zenex so it will be good to see their players getting a chance to show what they can do.

WE.GIGABYTE.SuperPrime What the hell is this? Is he called Super and on Prime.WE (sponsored by GIGABYTE)? If that's it, then THIS is the reason why you can have too many teams/sponsors. Like, imagine NEXSabaSabaChickenLineZenith

What do you mean what the hell this is? This is pretty common, just that most teams don't chain up their sponsors. Have you seen ST's jacket? TLAF-Liquid'Jinro is a good example. In tournaments the "TLAF" isn't displayed but it is just there. WE.Prime is a joint team force, something like oGs and TL but they aren't necessarily the same thing.
Ps. SabaSabaChicken is for prime isn't it?

Yes I know. But ST's Ids are still St_something, not these terrible monsters. Yes, SabaSabaChicken is for Prime. It just was a nice long random korean sponsor, I don't remember that many off my head.
My point is just that the ID is way too long. I'm pretty sure nobody actually wants to write that out, and no caster will say that. It's annoying.

As I understand it GIGABYTE only sponsors a few of the players in the team, like the top4, and that's a way to distinguish between the 'A-team' players or something. Both they are the sponsors want some recognition for this.
Surprisingly not that many epic matches in the opening round;

Haha I didn't even notice Axslav vs StrifeCro! I think there are less epic matches round 1 as the event goes on because we are able to more accurately seed the events. Because we let in a few lesser known players they are generally matched up against the big names round 1 due to the more refined seeding.

maybe people just aren't aware of who's in this tournament? if I remember correctly I saw some of the invites a few weeks ago and they weren't nearly as good as they are now
he might not have done enough damage for the game to be definitively given to him, but he was most definitely ahead and likely to win due to his proxy rax/bunker pressure against Axslav
Ya, Axslav couldn't kite 6 marines forever with his 2 stalkers, one had like 10 hp, and the marines were standing beside the probes
only 1 stalker just started production, 1 finished bunker in his base and a 2nd almost done in range of his buildings, more marines trickling in, 13scvs+mule vs 16probes and likely several more about to die

Excuse me, sir, I meant this FXOpen, although it is true that FXOpen is mostly an Australian/NA/Korean tournament in general, and the Koreans usually field far more players here than they do in most other tournaments (ie I noticed that a contingent of fOu is here today, plus a lot of Prime and oGs members). Why more European pros are not playing in it, I don't know - I suspect it has to do with other commitments and the time of the tournament - but it is a legitimate, albeit tongue-in-cheek, response to Qaatar's question. No offense is meant to the organizers or the prestige of the tournament.
Really brilliant play by TheBest man, sacrifices that entire army, doing an infinite amount of damage. Wipes out a near equivalent army of Terran's not to mention... his expo+main killed everything and macroed up an even scarier army after that entire ordeal. Such sick play.

Because top Europeans don't play in FXOpen?
Hey, someone was going to say it, so I might as well preempt it.
MarineKing, sC, Cloud, Fenix, TT1, and Cruncher are the only top players from ANY country playing in this tournament. Attempting to draw conclusions from this pool of players is pointless.

Let me just take this opportunity to say that I really appreciate what you guys are doing, deL, because you guys bring in a lot of Korean and Chinese players, including lesser known ones, and I think that's quite unique out of all the big tournaments. I'm definitely not slighting the tournament as I like the format.

Yeah, great decision making by TheBest to go after Terran's base.

That's not true - the top 200 in Korea are pretty much equivalent with the exceptions of a few demigods like mvp, MC, Bomber, Alicia, Losira, NesTea, etc.
Not sure about the parity of the other servers though.
Hey, FXO guys, what's the story with eizcaj? Is that actually SiriusfOu's account, or is it some other top NA player? They are #10 on Sc2ranks.com with a 75% win ratio.

For today SiriusfOu borrowed it. It is the account of SEA commentator/personality JacziE.
She also let me lend her account to someone else who would I will keep anonymous unless he tells me otherwise for now, for NA laddering. It is not SiriusfOu though.
On April 24 2011 14:22 Xeris wrote: how come these turned from 2-3 day events to 2 week events?
It's always been 2-3 days over 2 weekends. Last one was 2 days all on one weekend just to try that out and it ran for far too long and compromised player comfort (especially EU players who started past midnight and had to play well into the morning, ruining their weekend). The reason for the two weekends is that Sunday for USA is Monday for the Australian-based FXO staff and with work/uni we can't usually host events at that time.
It was mostly in the interest of reducing player and caster fatigue that saw us return to a 3-day event and it seems as it will stay like this for a while even if it means day 1 generates a little less hype than the next weekend.
Having said that, we're always open to feedback from players who participated! Swing me a PM.

In EU Ciara used to ladder as Eizcaj. Might be him.

I'm probably falling victim to a troll but that was the most absurd statement I've read today (and that's saying a lot considering what happened in the TSL LR thread and subsequently in Cruncher's fan club).
Take another look at the bracket and then think back at how many of those "non top players" have major accomplishments in multiple tournaments. Shame on you for spreading such absurdities.

The account may have been given to someone else fairly recently. I can assure you that he used it, though. I suppose not necessarily this season.
Replays should be more comprehensive for days 2 and 3, but in the mean time enjoy these replay packs from some of the players on day 1! Big shoutout to RebornfOu helping out to remind the fOu players to provide replays!
Sorry if this is the wrong place, but does anyone know when FXO is opening their team house and tourney studio? It's hard to sit around and wait for this exciting ESPORTS news to be officially announced.

FXO's tournaments are a great example of how it's possible with a relatively small prize pool (compared to MLG/Dreamhack/NASL/IPL/GSL) to run an absolutely FANTASTIC tournament with no shortage of the world's best progamers, high production value and a comprehensive double elimination system that allows players to come back from a single "fluked" bo3
Also the fact that they release replays and have multi-language casters is the icing on the cake.
There's so much effort packed into each and every one of these. Keep up the great work guys!

Yes its awesome too watch.
I just hope they start adding in qualifiers eventually, would love too see players who don't have a big name too get invited, qualify and play in these ^_^.

Indeed, it's basically like having mini TSL-level tournament every now and then. Huge props to FXO.

That's not entirely true. A fair share of the Koreans participating gets roflstomped as well. I think the quality of the foreign players is lower in this invitational though, compared to the earlier ones and also definitely TSL.
MYMClouD offline and unavailable even to teammates, and oGsVINES is not here I am not sure why but it could be that he has no account or has forgotten I will see what I can do to get in touch with him to see if he needs an account. Bit unfortunate to have 2 people absent out of 16 but with so many borrowed accounts and different timezones it's always a risk unfortunately.
Damn I hope Cloud and Vines show up. I also hope more people start to tune in. Less than 1000 viewers combined for the streams is way too little for such a tournament of this caliber.
What happened with sC vs Leenock, I thought it was 1-1 but Khaldor seems to have gone on a break now, did I miss something?
MKP and BbongBbong @ 1-1
always interesting seeing how teammates play each other.
===
Looks like we have some MechKingPrime style in game 3
ed: BbongBbong just goes for a 3base roach bust and it's done. MKP with a weak spot in his build while transitioning from hellion/marine directly into Thor with no siege tanks out.
Khaldor's internet cuts out at 3AM local time that may explain his absense O_O We were getting the players to hold up 5mins for his internet to come back up.

That would seem to make sense, but the players have done as well as they have so far on the NA server and to switch servers now would change the conditions completely. The players have proven themselves playa t this level in this latency and going to the Korean server with lower lat may turn this on it's head and give an advantage to the other players in my opinion. I think because of this we will stay on the NA server as it is really an NA server tournament
mm, I don't necessarily agree since they practice outside this tournament for hours every day on low latency conditions. I think if you asked the players they would all prefer to play on korea since korea to NA is still a huge latency difference
oh well, they all have played pretty well though for the most part

If playing in optimal conditions gives an advantage to one player then great, he's obviously the better player and deserves to win. I can understand playing on the NA server when there are players from different regions involved but when you have only Koreans left it makes no sense to have them compete in subpar conditions, which drastically reduces the quality of the games, simply by choice (if there's a reason you're unable to host it on the Korean server then that's a different matter).

The Tournament was advertised as an NA server event. So it should be ended on the NA server. If we did make exceptiont allow them to play on KR it would make a dangerous precident to future events. what if two EU players are playing int he middle of the bracket? Why arent they allowed to play on EU and not NA for their match? etc. In the past 3 Inviationals we have run we have only had 1 korean player have serious lag issues, the rest have always managed to play.
sC's decision to just say "fuck it" when the broodlords came out and abandon his tanks while stimming marines in to cause as much economic damage as possible worked out so well for him.
BbongBbong probably shouldn't have pushed with his Brood/Corrupter/Muta forces at the gold, but he was down to 1 mining base at that point so I guess he probably felt he needed to do something. Unfortunately for him sC had a decent chunk of vikings by then, and his main mining base was as far away from BbongBbong as possible.

Some rather nice play all in all.

Because this tournament is played on the NA server, it's just coincidental that the top 4 are Koreans.
Couldn't they switch to make it so there is the least lag possible? I'm pretty sure in NASL if it's KR vs KR they play on korean server.
NASL is a completely different tournament format and has the luxury of being able to schedule a game well in advance with a known matchup. Because we deliver a live tournament we can't be switching between servers several times a day especially when we have all 4 streams up.

Whoa MKP didn't get second place after going to the losers bracket, playing the guy he lost to, and then having to win twice against another player!? D:
I gotta say though... sC has been showing very consistent results... but is never the center of any attention. I wonder why. Is his play boring? I never watch his games.

He is a solid player who has been steadily improving this year. He hasn't received much attention because he has been overshadowed by other terrans like MVP, MKP, and lately Bomber and MMA, who either completely crush their opponents or have unique/flashy play styles. Also, I don't think him being in fOu, which isn't a very well liked clan in the foreign community, helps in regard to his popularity.

That's because the TSL has at least a week in advance to schedule the matches for everyone. Also, they are casted off of replays, not live, so the casters don't need to keep switching to the different servers.
