Q: So why only $5,000 for Season 1? A: This is our showcase of what we’re going to be doing in the future. Consider this a warm up event to prove our worth and why you should care about the IGN Pro League. Our future events will significantly eclipse the $5000 mark. So basically blame Blizzard. Not surprised!

It'll be interesting to see a "league" sort of thing like this where the commentators come to starcraft through commentating, rather than being former pro players who transition into commentating, as is the case for NASL and gsl. (with the exception of painuser, of course.). It'll be interesting to see how they compare.

One concern though: Sure Spades, Agh, Machine and ViBe are good players, but to pick them up instead of players like Tyler, TLO and HayprO seems a little misguided, especially when ROOT, EG and Dignitas all have at least one player (in 2 of those, 4 or more). To exclude one of the most consistent teams seems rather perplexing when you also consider how popular they are. I can already tell you that many of the Round 1 games will have smaller showings simply because there seems to be only one big name in each match (or two less well known names). Adding a few Liquid players would have brought a lot more interest to the tournament. TLO, Haypro are from Europe. Tyler declined the invite. Only one left is HUK and he has Code S to play.

Also in response to Travis and others who asked about future seasons: "Season one of the IGN Pro League, 16 of the best North American StarCraft II players from 9 different clans are competing for USD $5,000. In addition to the cash prize, these players are attempting to win one of four spots qualifying them for USD $50,000 in Season two!" I think the gist of what the general reaction entails is: it is slightly misleading for the average fan. Of course, all marketing is disingenuous to some extent. NASL did the same thing: when the news first arrived, it was BAM!!! $400K BABY!!! Some people, including some Koreans, thought that it meant $400k for the first place winner. Then, as more information trickled out, we realized that it's actually $100k for the entire first tournament that lasts for over 3 months. This is more of the same. Conversely, I bet almost no one knows (without quick research on liquipedia) what the total prize pool of the entire annual GSL and MLG events are, only that first place of the first three GSL Opens was $87K, Code S around $45K for first place, and $50K for first place at the MLG grand finals - that was good marketing too, but at least everything was transparent from the start. If I told you that the entire annual prize pool (as calculated in another thread I'm too lazy to look up atm) for GSL this year is around $1.5 million, the reaction would be slightly different. This is not a value judgment however, as I understand the need for good marketing.

And they've got a couple good quality casters in djWHEAT and TotalBiscuit, HDStarcraft is supposed to be ok as well. I don't know anything about painuser's casting. I hope it turns out great, it's looking ok so far.

Q: Will there be an organised VOD list like the GSL or is it justin.tv stream only?

I actually like the approach you guys are taking so far, edging yourself in and raise the prize pool as the tournament grows and evolves. It'll be interesting to see how this goes. I'm a huge fan of ROOT so the fact that this is run by the people behind ROOT has me pretty psyched. I really hope you guys will include player interviews and all the stuff TSL does, plus possibly more. Detailed player pages would be really cool as the tournament grows and continues, with in-depth stat tracking, individual player replay packs, tournament wins and placements(within the league), trivia and so on. Sort of like a league specific, in-depth Liquipedia. I love browsing through things like that and a well developed hub for finding replays of just your favorite player would be cool too.

I look forward to future seasons where top players have a chance to qualify, but the first season is pretty underwhelming, and it doesnt really make sense to make the first season like this and see how it does and add more money from there, you should start the first season with a bang (take a slight risk in investment) and try and attract as many viewers as possible and go fromm there bigger risk = bigger rewards IGN seems to be playing it super safe, but i could go either way on watching 90% of these players play so probably count me out for the first season for most of the games. The future tournaments will have open tournaments to determine 16 spots. This is just the first tournament for them to test stuff.
