The format is designed to protect previously established players. If you come in as top 16 seed you can win the whole tournament by playing only 7 series and winning 6 of them. Not particularly. The system is designed so the worst a Group play player can do is 24th place, which means a maximum of 8 players can drop from top 16 group play in every MLG. Compare this to GSL, where every season only 8 of the 32 Code S spots are up for grabs.


But the Code A people only need to win two matches to play in the up and down matches. At MLG you have to win like 15 games if you want the points for the next MLG.


To even play in Code A, you have to get past the Code A preliminaries. So quite a few more than just two sets.

The MLG format is similiar to invite tournaments with qualifier spots, like the TSL. If you run a 256-men double elimination open tournament alongside 16 invites, a winner from the qualifier will also end up playing more than twice as many sets as opposed to an invited winner.


if you want to compare the mlg format with gsl, you also have to take into account that you can actually win mlg directly coming from the open bracket whereas you have to wait for another season if you qualify for code s coming from code a (preliminaries).

i think the mlg format just feels a little bit more "elitist" because you know alot of the open bracket players from other tournaments, while you barely know any of the korean players who aren't in code A/ code S, because there is not much else besides GSL in korea.

I think general consensus is MVP was having some personal problems affecting his game and fell into a slump. Most of fans still recognize him as the best Terran in the world and S standing will be achieved asap and will tune into watch. Basically I don't think it hurt GSL or MVPs stock.

Is it just me or does it feel like SC2 just does not fit the MLG format of cram everything into one weekend. I like to watch long drawn out cerebral games, and MLG slams a 256 player double elimination tournament into the span of about 25 hours of streaming? There are so many awesome games that go completely unwatched and unnoticed. It sure makes for one heck of a tournament and the RO8 and up are going to be awesome, but so much just gets left behind :/

To me it's almost impossible to justify $25 HD passes when competitors do it for about half as much and make it a month long in depth event.

The kiwikaki replays don't convey how bad the lag was at the event from what we're told, huk went a ton of blink in those games and couldn't make use of it at all.

Socke does seem to have his number, and I don't think huk's pvp is anything flash.

MLG don't really do VODs.

A few select matches like the finals and winner/loser bracket finals will be uploaded after a week or so.

Then a few more matches will probably added in the weeks after that. Usually with the eventual winners road to the final, high profie names against eachother and things like that.

MLG is mostly a live competition. It's not supposed to be watched from VODs. Which just makes the stream failing that much worse
