Starcraft II is going to hit the northern wonderland of Finland in the beginning of the year 2011 as Assembly Winter and Steelseries organize one of the biggest SC2-tournaments in Europe.
Date: 11th - 13th February 2011 Place: Helsinki Cable Factory, Helsinki, Finland Player limit: 64 Tournament type: NON BYOC, Groups + Single-elimination Tournament Fee: 50e (About 65 USD - Includes the entry fee.) Prize Pool: 5000 Euros (About 6600 USD) Coverage: The Steelseries Starcraft 2 Challenge at Assembly Winter 2011 will be brought to you by GLHF.tv, produced by thebeard.tv. It will feature such casters as Maven from mouzTV fame, TheBeard on production and lastly Martijn from LLL and GLHF. TotalBiscuit will also provide English coverage. There will be also foreign language coverage in Finnish (SETT TV / ParuperuTV), French (Millenium TV), German (Khaldor) and Polish (itzMorglum)
All playoff matches for a round except a certain few RO32 matches will be played simultaneously, including the semifinals. This is the price to be paid for having 64 great players in the tournament, with a bo3 groupstage and no coinflips!
I wouldn't win considering paying all these fight tickets will also be quiet expensive. Wish i had a local tourny with this kind of prize pool. Sounds fun, home to see Liquid down there
Great. I urge every fan of ESPORTS to attend and/or follow this event via the streams, it is a huge opportunity to show the Northern European tournament organizers and sponsors that there is future in StarCraft 2.
This looks awesome, flights available from manchester/London from £30 singles and some are £15 from easyjet. Seriously tempted to fly over for this, any information on location of nearby cheap hotels/night life/sights to see etc? May as well make it a good weekend :D And anyone else from UK flying over? More fun if people meet and organize stuff together
EDit: Is it byoc or not? As the site FAQ says its BYOC?

Last year during the Winter Assembly it was around -20 to -30 C in Helsinki. And just today the long term forecast promised a very cold winter for us. So remember to pack some warm clothes if you come!
Awesome. I guess I gotta come watch, no chance of participation thought.
Couple of things that might interest those that dont know. The Cable Factory (old, Kaapelitehdas in finnish, renovated cable factory (duh), ex premises of Nokia no less, now an event place) is right in the middle of Helsinki. Metrostation is about 400 meters or 1/4 mile away. Public transportation works great in Helsinki so dont worry yourself with being right next to it. Its cold. What else... Night life should be good.

I'm travelling europe at the moment and wouldnt mind checking helsinki out .. Would be nice to see an SC2 Tournament live ...
Could you confirm if spectators will be allowed?
To spectate you need to buy an entry ticket, which is 25€. If you have a laptop you are allowed to bring it, but you won't have your own place to set up, but you can of course use the WLAN internet.
In my experience the spectator area wasn't great at the past events (there wasn't one, really, kinda), the screen is a decent size for the crowd though. The main event in the summer is awesome but WASM is kind of an offshoot.
Sweet ! Another huge tournament in the northern europe, i'll sure support this as your fellow scandinavian brother ! Nice to see all this activity here, the only country which haven't really caught the SC2 fire completely yet is my own country DK, anywho the future looks bright ! I hope this will encourage some tournament holders in Denmark as the e-sports scene is pretty big here but that's defintely mainly the FPS games that's big here like counter-strike and quake.

Yepp Norway is the last to hold a ~high-profile SC2 tourney, at least Denmark had DSRack =)

DSrack not even worth mentioning, even that is too much credit for them after the problem with paying the prizes they promised... Well not even 1 year past the event, so maybe they will pay, as one year is quite the standard for some of the biggest esports organisations (ESL) AFAIK

True, sorry about forgetting Norway it wasn't my intention . But you're right we have alot to learn from Sweden and Finland to broaden the scene more.
The registration has been open for some days now and already tons of great applicants have shown their interest. As a bonus for early birds who have already applied, the 16 first participants are already chosen into the tournament.
As you can see the players include a wide array of recognizable names from all around Europe and beyond, from Danish 6pools to solid American Terran power and a variety of constant top performers in European leagues. However one name might strike out to many: Manuel "Grubby" Schenkhuizen, the legendary Orc player from WarCraft III has finally joined the fray for real on the StarCraft side of things, making his first major tournament appearance. Does he have a say against established top-tier players such as Naama, SjoW and DeMusliM? We'll find out in two month's time!
Remember, there is still time to apply, as the deadline isn't before the end of December, and there are still 48 more slots up for grabs.
As far as I understand, Grubby is not actually random, his race has just not been confirmed yet. Lol, right after this post they updated the OP. Sorry...

/proud
Danish 6pools are E-famous, you know what to do fellow vikings!
I think Grubby's main is protoss but I don't think he is playing too seriously yet so the random might be accurate. Maybe he isn't fully decided yet and wants to keep his actions open, which is kinda smart.
I'll try to take pictures and make a small coverage about the events ^^ probably won't be the only one but still. You can never have too many people talking about it
Man if Rainbow actually came out and played in this, that would just be the icing on the cake.
Really if any top Koreans came out, it would take the lineup over the top. It really wouldn't be too surprising in some oGs guys considered it too, as living with TL players has seemed to encourage them to get involved in european tournaments kinda regularly.
Perhaps a bit off topic (or perhaps not?), I was just thinking about something when watching the confirmed player list. While I'm elated that for example HuK is going, I've got to wonder, what is the motivation behind it? Considering he's in Korea, and this is in Finland, I can't imagine the profit margin is very big (if it's there at all) even if he should win it.
I'm not too familiar with how Pro SC2 teams work, so is this more about, like, the publicity, and proving who's the best, etc - even if there's no direct profit to it? I can also imagine that the trip is sponsored, and that it makes a certain amount of sense from a sponsor perspective should HuK have a good showing (which I certainly expect).
I definitely prefer it that way, where players aren't afraid to travel quite far to take part and make it a better tournament, if it's based more on a more or less intangible "success" rate that stands apart from the straight up profit margin.
Is it anything like that, or am I more or less completely off the mark?
Edit: As for the actual tournament. Fuck me, it looks stacked! Unless I absolutely can't for whatever reason, I will absolutely be watching.
I love how Cella just drops in and says that ITR wants to play lol. Wouldn't it conflict with the billion tournaments that GOM is setting up next year?
On December 25 2010 11:33 Redmark wrote: I love how Cella just drops in and says that ITR wants to play lol. Wouldn't it conflict with the billion tournaments that GOM is setting up next year?
Actually no. According to the schedule, there are no events going on during that time period. Of course, if one happened to be a part of the team league that could be an issue and the games do start back up after the weekend although I'm sure if you asked way ahead of time you could get a game on thursday or friday (although that didn't work for idra for dreamhack).
why on earth did they invite actionjesuz..... want to see alot of 6/7pools? i admit it was fun to hear at dreamhack but if you can get invited to tournements like this by 6pooling?
But appart from that great players. Would like to see some big zerg players like ret/idra to join. TLO always fun to watch. But so few zerg players

Its not like they are rolling in cash. 3000€ is pretty good for a couple of days work. They wouldnt pay for the plane tickets after all.
Also, theres 64 players in this tournament. ActionJesuz is alot better than people give him credit for, so unless every top NA/EU player is coming, ActionJesuz fits in just fine.
Would be nice to see more even more North American players participating. And if it's true there's no schedule conflict with 2011 GSL would be awesome to get more people from Korea as well.
Since there's still so much time I'm guessin (and hoping) there will be plenty more top level players signing in.
edit: Whops, I guess not so much time left after all if the deadline for signing in is 30th of Dec. Seems a bit early maybe if the tournament is in February.
I'm really excited to see how grubby fares in this tournament.. been reading he's interested in a full switch to SC2, if this tournament goes well for him he might do it. Playing as random though, we'll have to see, I was pretty sure he used to play protoss at first.

Competitive TF2. It's pretty cool.
Interesting how many good players are coming over for SC2. I mean the prizepool is good, especially for the first Assembly SC2 event, but damn there are a lot of takers there. It's going to be interesting to see the rest of the players, might not see many more big names though...

It is still possible to be invited and receive a spot that way as well, registration closes on 30th December and we will announce the rest of the invite shortly after. More information about the tournament and how to apply for a spot can be found here
aplications should be closed by now, so they will come in a few days i would guess

And also, in my opinion, the one that requires most skill.
Everyone knows about it. but no one takes it seriously, also alot of the top players left like 2months into it for CoD4, like the old evil genius tf2/cod4 team
So it's sad but true. There arn't much finnish players who are good.. I thought all good or "good" players would sign up, but the truth is smth else. Even i can beat halfo of those finns listed in op.. :E
TF2 is a wonderful competitive game (with certain limitations on items). It's also an absolute riot to watch as almost everyone's played it and understand the basic principles. Plus it's colourful and stylish. As I recall, at the last i-Series event, the only thing that attracted a larger crowd than Starcraft 2, was TF2.
Haha and yes, that vid is actually from the i40. Loud, LOUD crowd.
Not sure what is skill-level of raynpelikoneet but if it is close the same than in SC1/Brood War i consider him as not-even-challenger against the finnish guys who really are in the tournament.
At this moment these guys are pretty much the best. Hopefully Naama can continue his succes but i think HuK will be unbeatable in this tournament.
Holy shit, I go check the list out and the first name is ST_Rainbow. Then ret right after... o.O Craaaazy line-up.
I don't like the so-called filler slots for finns, though. I really hope that all the high level foreigner slots got filled before they let some of those admittably mediocre finns in, and wasn't just because of them being from Finland.
Impressive list but some noticeable players are missing like White ra, dimaga, Lucifron, Goody, Mana.. Did they refuse? Besides since you invited Gruby you could invite ToD and Moon that would be cool :p

I'm surprised that someone is actually expecting BETTER quality of players in tournament. Hell, it's 5k prizepool tour in FINLAND; how many people do you expect to be interested in it? I was shocked that there even were enough people willing to pay the 50e (or at least make the application) buyin. Who knows how many of them will eventually lack balls to show up, but I think the list of players is pretty remarkable to caliber of this event.
Clearly there ain't enough big LANs if popularity is at this level. One high level LAN like this every 2 week would be awesome
Is it easier for Russians to get visas to go to Finland as opposed to Sweden or Germany?
If not I suspect BRAT_OK might be sitting this one out as well.
fantastic list of players. I notice that the players are listed by team and then the teamless are listed at the bottom. Most of them are unknown but I did notice Konna in there and he was a very good wc3 player and someone people might overlook.
Woooooot! What a players >.<. Like 58 guys from proteams for 5000e prizepool + SS stuff and in so expensive country like in Finland ._.. Mouz, ROX.KIS, Liquid, Rainbow, Americans. Gonna be sick! Glad I even got in =D
Woah ST.Rainbow as the sole Korean player there (unless ret/huk are counted). Curious to see how he does as he hasn't been too hot in the KR scene lately.
I think Huk is a strong favourite this time judging from his recent performances in ladder

Of course the GSL is in its own world of prize money, and we shouldn't see this in relation to the GSL. 5000 EUR makes this event one of the bigger LANs, but the prize moeny is still not enough to make it worthwile for the large most of the players (same with MLG Raleigh or DC (7k $)). Take TL, for instance: 3 players attending, and only if they score all top 3 positions, they will earn 4850 EUR prize money in order to cover for 4 flights from and to Korea, 2 flights from and to Germany, accomodation/hotel for 3 players, transportation at the local place, maybe food for 3 players and visa- and insurance related costs. Which is surely not enough. And teams like Alternate, Dignitas, Rox.Kis, Empire, Mousesports are all in the same position and expect their players to bring home some cash from that tournament, too. It is therefore astonishing to see such a big lineup of good players and I can't wait for this tournament, I will surely watch the hell out of the stream next month
Edit: By the way, also always see in relation to the other tournaments played at the event: Tekken: 1700 EUR CSS: 2350 EUR TF2: 3110 EUR SC2: 5000 EUR So big shoutout to the Assembly Staff \o/
I think you misunderstood quite a bit. Teams arent looking for their players to bring them their cash back home (afaik most teams don't get any part of the prize money at all and it goes to the player instead, correct me if i'm wrong), they're looking for publicity. Sending a player to a tourny is mostly expected be a loss in money in itself, but the revenue comes from the publicity the team gets. When people go to their site and click the adds or just simply want to buy the same product that their favourite pro player uses, the teams will get more money from their sponsors to cover for the losses in sending players around the world.

This. I can't imagine a professional team expecting to get money out of the earnings of a player at a tournament. Maybe if they won GSL or something a small percentage but not something like the Assembly. Sponsors want publicity and going to events means publicity for them through the players/teams attending. They pay for this and a player winning an event means more publicity. I hope a progamer can enlighten me if I'm wrong.

i hope he brings his hot hamburger
and eat one for every time he wins a series
In that case it would be easier in the Summer LAN as there is a burger joint within the venue.
It's kinda mind boggling how many really good players came to the event with only 5000€ prize pool. I'm not one to look at the gift horse's mouth though so I'll just happily watch the streams.
Most western pro gaming teams take something like from 10 to 20 percent of the prize money that their players win. In most cases this is nowhere near enough to cover the expenses to send the players to these events. It's the publicity that the teams are after.

Also I'm a cella fan, but he's rly done nothing to earn an invite.
Doesn't look like you are a cella fan. Can you at least read the op before say something ? The tournament is invite only and you must request an invite by sending an email to info@peliliiga.fi including the following information:
Is not they are invited with free passes. cella has to pay the entry fee and his own traveling expenses.
Sadly we need to inform that Rainbow and Cella can not attend after all due to visa problems.
There are plenty of other changes to the lineup as well, but no drastic cancellations. Informing about changes one by one is not practical due to a lot of them happening sporadically, people changing their minds about their cancellations and having the replacement choices often cancel as well.
Expect the groups to be published in a few days time.

Am I crazy or does it seem most of the Finish players in this tournament got their place because they are, well from Finland? Half of the names I never even heard of.
I know the tourney is in Finland but you could have been a bit less biased.

Yes, that is the question. On the top of my head, 2 liquid members are not on the list.

Do you own brains? Its huge that _EVEN_ this many players from all over the world come for 5k€ prizepool tournament. Dont you think they wouldnt take all good non-finn players who apply? Almost all of the finns are top200 eu or close to that. So please next time use your brains before you post such a stupid post.
I guess that this has been discussed already, but just as an addition
All playoff matches for a round except a certain few RO32 matches will be played simultaneously, including the semifinals. This is the price to be paid for having 64 great players in the tournament, with a bo3 groupstage and no coinflips!
Yet another slight insult towards our neighbors in the west I am guessing ;p

+ they have to pay the entry fee of 50 € (or dollar I can't remember)
Ho hum, I'm in finland for just half a year, but I'm gonna see this.. 25 euros for 3 days is pretty good price for such event, and opportunity to meet some finnish people that also play SC, or even people like morrow, huk, etc. too bad some others cancelled their participation, mainly koreans.
Well anyway, see you there I hope it will be heaps of fun.
When there's official info about the effect of DeMusliM's unfortunate injury on his participation and the possible need for a replacement, this thread will naturally be updated as soon as possible.

Thanks for the feedback. I would like to ask that since the invites are based on player-sent applications, on what do you base this claim that the choosing process was biased towards Finnish players? I would think such a claim requires information about the application pool which is not public.
I admit that the application pool is skewed towards Finnish players since the event is held in Finland, making for easier transportation and accomodation for Finnish people, but this "bias" is generally somewhat hard to get rid of in a LAN event unless the event is held on the moon.

No, they had some money problems as far as I know. Koreans don't need a visa for Finland.
Got some questions: Demuslim is injured so he will not play - who will replace him? Why there is no Mana? Is BratOk is ok with his visa problems? How many players advance from groups? It is bo1 or bo3 in groups stage?

Thank God for so many streams - sooo hyped for it
2 players advance from each group and the groupstage is best of 3. I'd like to know any answers to the other questions, though.

I visited the venue today, and everything seems good, but there isnt too much space for visitors during group games etc and only playoff round 1 and finals will be on stage (around 200 seats).
Also the tables etc were otherwice fine but the chairs are too low, and im 189cm, so I suggest every1 competing brings a pillow (well Huk prolly does this anyways (= )

Yes. As Seinis said, if you're sensitive to that kind of thing, bring a pillow. At least if you're of the Asian descent type (of relatively short growth, no discrimination intended), don't play the piano, and recognize the need for yourself to elevate yourself a short distance unless you're satisfied with a tad low chair.
As the most observant of you have noticed, DeMusliM will probably not attend - he will probably not be replaced with anybody (due to the short time frame) and his spot will be vacant. Ditto for the Russians if these rumors of the above posts hold true.

Btw Is there any sens in inviting BratOK for tours like that, as i remember he NEVER showed up in any eu lan cup due to his visa problems :/ Now same for rest of Russian doods, that will leave 3-4 free spots in playoffs for some unknown players which is good in some way but there are so many good players in eu who were not invited makes me feel sad. Life is best teacher.

So far it seems that Pomi and Live.Zerg will be coming, at least we have not heard anything else so far. So you shouldnt generalize there. And once they get a visa for a tourney and come back, they will have a easier time getting visas in the future. In case of Brat_OK you might be right, he seemed to have serious problems getting visas. On the other hand the Russian poster said that he got a visa this time. He just became ill.
It's sad that some top players like Dimaga, Demuslim, BratOK, Goody and Thorzain are missing. With them and some other players (Nericho, Ciara, Stephano, Sase, ...) it would be really something like a European championship (+ qxc, tyler and huk).
The amount of top players is really great nevertheless.

Yes. Players needed to send an application for this tournament. Seems that not all top EU players sent an application or sent it too late.
But still there is a lot of good players from NA and EU and groups seem to be pretty good so we should be happy atleast for that

Wow, the rules say that the tournament will release a replay pack. I wonder if that will actually happen. Large tournaments are usually pretty bad about releasing replays. If it does happen though that'll be a treat.

Anything by GOM, Green Forest LAN, some invitationals, etc.
Is there a brackets-page or a page with group standings or anything? How do we follow the actual results, as (I'm assuming) only a few games will be streamed on assemblyTV?
Is someone over there who creates and updates a live report thread?

Tarson, SjoW, TLO and RET wow. Amazing tournament!
HuK seems to be a fan favorite, sadly I think he's gonna have to get lucky with opponents to get anywhere in this tournament. It's so hard to say because there was some time since I saw HuK play and who knows how much he has improved in Korea. Hopefully for his sake, alot! :D
My predictions are that we are going to see two of the players I mention at the top of this post in the finals and the other top contenders for a finals spot would be: qxc, Tyler, DeMusliM and maybe HuK (if he has improved from his korea grind.) or Naama in his own territory.
Other then that, who's going to suprice and get a break-through? Jimpo, Naniwa, Kas, Adelscott or is this finally Streloks time?

Demuslim broke his Hand last week or 2 weeks ago in Cologne so that won't happen.
Naniwa and Kas, wouldn't really call it breakthrough if they win, they have won so many online cups. I mean they didn't perform too well at LAN events yet but there haven't been enough to have all top players win one :D

I highly doubt that. We got some players in the field that I think could do very well in Code-S Like Tarson and SjoW and I dont think HuK is a Code-A player yet. In fact I'd be supriced if he managed to qualify for Code-A.

Is anybody watching the GLHF stream? These commentators are so godawful. Its like they asked a few of the public attendees "hey u wanna commentate the starcraft tournament?".
@Jerax check the khaldor stream. They are German talking and a little biased towards the German players ;o) But they have a good overview, showing both players. And they use English unit names. So it should be understandable...
I just saw Grubby games against Sarens and it was first time i saw him playing on Starcraft 2. At the start of the games i was really impressed with stuff like how he controlled units almost individually regardless of Control Groups and how his multitask was good and even small stuff like transfering probes to a vespene gas that was about to pop, even on progamers you see some sort of delay on those things.
But at the same time he looked like he had problems knowing how to deal with siege tanks, knowning when to attack or with positions like choke points, so it got me curious: In war3 did they have stuff like choke points/concave advantages and siege units with insane damage and range that demanded some positional awareness on engagements like terran tanks?
I hope i don't sound too critic, im just curious. I was really impressed with his multitask but at the same time he had some other stuff underdeveloped in his play, pretty sure with time he will get there and be an amazing player at the game.
Interviews take by gg.ru while they were waiting for the games during day 1. I'd like to Notice that they were quite spontaneous and most of the questions were taken Live from the commentaries on web-site so don't judge too harsh. Interview with meRz Interview with Socke Interview with QXC
not to say ret's not amazing, 'cause he is and i totally love the guy. but wow, morrow's side of the bracket was truly packed. tyler, huk, socke, qxc, tarson, kas. by comparison, ret's side was pretty thin, with only adelscott and naniwa really standing out.

On February 13 2011 18:46 Artistic wrote: Can you post a link to the replays? I cant seem to find them on the Assembly website.
It will take some time to organize the harvested replays and go through all the "Xel'Naga Caverns (89).sc2replay"-named files to link them to the correct games since there wasn't a system in place for that for the tournament.
They'll be linked to this post once they're up, hopefully within a week.
As an interesting (at least to stats freaks) ahead on the replay pack, the preliminary map distribution of the tournament games (all matches used only map vetoing for deciding the maps):
Xel'Naga Caverns 29% Metalopolis 17% Lost Temple 16% Shakuras Plateau 12% Jungle Basin 8% Scrap Station 5% Blistering Sands 3% Delta Quadrant 3% Steppes of War 2%
(apparently SC2Gears is fine with the percentages adding only up to 95%, guess it uses truncation instead of rounding)
A bit under 80% of the games used just 4 different maps, which probably won't be news to anyone. It will be interesting to see which direction the SC2 scene map usage goes to. The Assembly map pool was fixed in December; luckily already by now we're seeing some change about to happen in bigger leagues in the form of the ICCup (in ESL) and GSL maps starting to get actual use.

Yeah, the lower bracket was "missing" SjoW, BRAT_OK and DeMusliM, if they had 1) participated 2) won their groups. Tyler would also have been there, had he won his group instead of SarenS.

Thanks, those stats are amazing Really nice to see the order of the maps that the pros find acceptable to play on and also clearly shows that there are only 4 maps in the current Blizzard map pool that are suited for tournament usage.
