Idra will probably get Ret first round, starcraft gods are funny like that.

It's always disappointing to see some good players knocked out already, such as Tester.

That list depresses me to no end.

Not only do more good protoss get spanked, many of the top foreigners are out.

Edit: Oh and what is a joke is comparing the GSL to the MLG. The MLG had a lot of great players, but as you can see a lot of those players who win western tournies, or consistently beat top foreigners, can't even get past the ro128. That is pretty significant.

it's really not that significant

at say, MLG, there is a smaller pool of very competent players.

at GSL qualifiers there is going to a larger pool of competent players, and with 3-4 rounds even good players are sometimes oging to lose that one series which knocks them out

just like how idra got knocked out at mlg pretty early because he played series vs good players, and hell, that was with double elim, whereas the qualifiers is single elim

Yeah, and a lot of the really good Koreans get eliminated too. It's a huge tournament; early eliminations happen. Bleach has made it in more times than oGsTop, but somehow I doubt he's better.

There are definitely some MLG players who deserve to be mentioned among the top players, there's just not nearly as many of them.

And as the above poster said, there is a lot of luck involved in any single tournament showing.

I don't know why people were so high on Loner in the first place. He has a very stubborn play style and too often makes silly game-losing mistakes.

Yea, that's why the person with the best overall MLG record this year lost in the qualifiers to a random average terran right?
Call me back when Fruitdealer or Nestea loses in the Round of 128 at an MLG.

Excuse me but pretty sure FD nearly did loose in the Ro.128

So he didn't lose?

On topic: Shocking to see Tester not qualify once again. He may have been the one protoss that isnt an underdog and can actually win the entire thing.

Even if you count in the luck factor, you have to admit the skillcap in GSL is very far above any Western leagues. Players like Huk don't need to rely on luck to go far in MLG but he sure does in GSL. The gap IS significant.

What? Why would you miss a single GSL tourney to go attend a single foreign tourney with significantly less stakes? Am I missing something?

It is a valid argument. MLG and IEM often happen over the span of 3 days and the competitor field is much smaller. Yet winning them gets you a lot of recognition and thus not just prize money but also sponsorship potential. There is a lot to be said to choosing the foreign tournaments over the GSL if you are not capable of winning GSL.

Shoot for the stars try to achieve the highest possible means you play GSL. Realize you won't win GSL but are very good; you could make a choice to play foreign tournaments because there are more of them, the level is lower and the exposure is still good, and who doesn't like winning over getting knocked out in Ro16s. There are many factors to consider and it's not as simple as looking at the prizepool.

Another factor thing to consider is that being in Korea will raise your level of play giving you more chance to win stuff in the long run, whether it's foreign or Korean.

One more thing is variance. GSL you have one shot per month. No matter how good you are there is a chance you will fail at that shot. The more tournaments you play the less variance and the more security in your life.

So maybe in a month where there are two major tournies in a single month, but honestly how often does that happen (fyi, I have NO idea)? And if they aren't in the same location, they're having to pay travel fares, etc. while GSL is free, no? And don't you also make money from merely getting into the Ro64 in the GSL? So at least it's some income, opposed to having to pay for flight costs to travel across the globe to compete in something where although you have a better chance, you're guaranteed nothing (also, assuming).

living in korea is fairly expensive also going from canada to korea costs a lot more than going to USA for a tournament like MLG, also more foreigner's expected value is prob higher at MLG than GSL

Thing is apparently GSL is very accomodating for the players going over, and some are sponsored to go over, no?

I also believe the cost of living in S. Korea is lower than the US, but that's only a guess going from how the average salary is lower.

from what giyom told me, living in Seoul is quite expensive... quite more than the US

I hope someone keeps track of statistics for foreigners in the GSL3 with the progression of each round. All this debating only confirms that the Ro64 is too dynamic to make an accurate assessment about players' skill levels.

LOL HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE THE NAME VEALSTEAK? There should be a separate thread just to talk about the awesomeness of that name.

I'm really sad that Tester failed to qualified yet again and also Inca!! =/
Koreans Zergs are so OP, they really play so well and not because of the race
Being in NA server, terran and protoss pretty much dominate the servers
Well i hope there would be a protoss at least in RO8?
Happy to see more foreigners qualified this season Grats Ret, Idra, Sen and Haypro

Foreigners are not bad, considering that only ~50% of them didn't qualify.
Koreans had more players and ~75% didn't make it.

Maybe he likes veal steak! Physically, he appears to enjoy food more than most other men whom look like they are famished. Starving themselves just to be able to fit into skinny jeans. WTF! Go eat a burger or something!
