TOP and July were two notable Korean players that did not qualify last time. Also, I think SjoW is going to Dreamhack. Softball, Dus and Luffy are probably attending, as is Moon, and I'm pretty sure SeleCt is.
Will be there getting destroyed Monday night, 6pm. I know I won't make the Ro64 or even probably win a game, but, teaching in Korea this year, and when in Rome....
I dunno if you want to add it motbob - but from what I understand mOOnGLaDe was going to participate but had to pull out - might be good to note down some of those high level players that won't be there.
Edit: Now that I think about it that might not be the best idea. Scratch that.
In some ways, this is my favorite part of each GSL season so far. Just wish there were more video of it Best of luck to all foreigners, plus Tester and Fruitdealer!
I humbly request that TorcH and SeleCT be added to the list of players to watch! They both stated to me at MLG Dallas that they'd be attempting to qualify.
Havent bought a season pass for 1 and 2 but will definetely be picking up one for Season 3. Really want to see some foreigners make it far. IdrA fighting!
When I was leaving the GSL finals, I was pretty sure I spotted Torch there as well as some of the other top foreigner players there, so I would think Torch is participating
How exactly are they planning to get through all of these players in two days? Last time it took four days, and they will have even more entrants this time =/
please Idra, please please please qualify and get to at least the r16, i really really need a forgiener to cheer on in S-class. The good of western gaming depends on you!

Well, Tester and July definitely arnt foreigners either. I'm pretty sure the first list is the poeple who were qualified for season 2 while the second list is notable players who didnt qualify/participate last time.

By JingJing, P has gone from the considered OP race in Korea (in GSL 1 according to Artosis) to considered the by far UP race (same # of P as T signed up and they expect worse than Z from them).
And with finals/qualifiers so close, there's no downtime for a patch to potentially change anything about that before ro64 is decided, so I wouldn't be surprised.

I think the only foreigners going to be Class S is IDRA.... he don't make the mistake to try to qualify the last last season... because the last one is the hardest to qualify IMO
What the hell does fucking S class even mean? I know it's for qualification and seeding and stuff next year but what's the difference between Code A and Code S? Seems like no one knows, lol.

As far as I understand Code S is like "best amongst the A Codes" and it will transfer to beeing seeded into the GOMTV league next year, while rest of the ppl (Code A) will either qualify for rest of the spots or will be randomly distributed over the remaining league spots.
You can find the D, C, B, A, S grading scale in the Lineage 2 game and I guess it is related.
I really hope we don't see some of the players who stumbled into the round of 64 last time around. I really want the foreigners to succeed this time around. Liquid` and EG Hwaiting! But the best thing ever would be if Incontrol won for Auir!
I really hope this time we will have less streaming problems and better quality in East Europe, and ofcourse more Tosses.
It would be great that they lower previous ticket holders prices to 10$ for people who already bougt S1 and S2 ticket, and they stick to that price from now on, as it seems most fair price for loyal customers that supported both their previous events.
I don't understand how can you seriously consider a Protoss winning GSL. Nothing really changed since GSL Season 2 - there was no patch and nobody invented anything that would help PvT early game afaik. The number of "good" Terrans is steadily rising, so it will be even harder for a Protoss to break through.

There's two different tournaments. 32 player S-class tournament and a 64 player A-class tournament. The S-class tournament will presumably be a lot more prestigious and have more prize money, which is why everyone is making such a big deal about getting the S-class status.
So basically I'm on a holiday for this week and there is GSL prelims. I'm 1 lucky bastard ha :D ? Anyway, can we internationals watch prelims from anywhere?

1) FU GOM WHY NO STREAMS. 2) Scrap station is just another stupid map of blizzard. But it's still better than LT or DQ (which means Disqualify for all Zerg players).

Depends how they rate it, which GSL hasn't really specified. Presumptially it's top 8 from GSL1/2/3, then the top placed players afterwards, combination of # of GSLs qualified and ranking. If this is the case, he is not guaranteed S-Class right now, but would be among the prime candidates for the remaining 32-8*3=8 spots, as he made it to ro32, ro16 and not many of the other qualifiers have had repeat success like him. As such, he should be in S-Class, unless suddenly like 8 people who made ro32, also make ro16/ro8.

Yup, GSL1/2/3 right now is basically pre-GSL to find all 'seeded' players the tournaments starting next year. Next year GSL isn't gonna be like how it is now with consecutive open tournaments. They'll have a mix of some seeded A-Class, S-Class tournaments, along with chances to move from Korean Ladder <-> A-Class <-> S-Class.

If he fails to qualify would he still be S class based on the results? Currently the only non-S class player who has better results is Check (with 2 Ro16s).

You kind of answered that yourself. There are still a few players that can pass him if they do well in Season 3
Ahh, these GSLs just seem too quick to me... but it makes sense if they are trying to create a counter to the SC1 Starleagues. Who knows maybe the GSL will turn into the Courage tourneys... once a team league can be started. Just a random thought lol.

The "Top 8 from GSL 1/2/3" is pretty much confirmed given the "Achievements" listed for players who made it. They haven't specified the remaining 9-17 spots (given Ro8 repeats - HopeTorture twice, and however many repeats we get in GSL 3) but I would assume it would follow their ranking system. Which is based on wins, and has a slight advantage (1 rank up - 1 win equivalent) for GSL1 qualifiers.
Idra's 3 is pretty good there; out of the non-Ro8 finishers:
CheckPrime 4 wins Idra, ogsTheWind, sanZenith 3 wins (all GSL1 qualifiers so 1 rank up there)
There are 10 with 2 wins (7 GSL1 qualifiers), 23 (13 GSL1 qualifiers) with 1 win.
As long as Idra qualifies and wins his Ro64 match he's pretty much S-Class if they follow rankings as it would take an completely implausible scenario for him to drop out (even if he then lost Ro32, it'd take 8 new Ro8 players; ogsTheWind and SanZenith making Ro32 but not Ro8; and 6 of 7 2-win GSL1 qualifiers making it to Ro16 and then losing to even force a tiebreak which only 1 player of 10 would miss).
There are a lot more scenarios if he doesn't qualify / make it past Ro64 but even then it would take a lot of the 2-win/1-win people qualifying and doing well while the current top 16 (Ro8 people + Check) don't, which isn't terribly likely. Once we're through qualifiers I'll take another look and maybe post everyone's ranks.
What I'm wondering is how they're going to fill A-Class, as it's apparently 32 S-Class, 64 A-Class, and they won't have 96 different people winning a match (currently 53). They might not even have 96 different people winning a map (currently 72). Maybe this is why GSL1 people have a leg up?
Edit: After re-reading the gomtv.net rank post, it seems that S1 qualifiers have a leg up in rankings, so my original thoughts above were slightly off. Edited to update. Also I had an extra 1 win person.
You can see a list of players in the hunt for S Class here. Check and IdrA are in great shape (I suspect Check may actually have clinched but without knowing the exact formula can't say for sure), but there's a lot of high profile players like oGsTOP, oGsMC, Clide, and SangHo who still have work to do.
Thing about Protoss is that no one else is better than NEXGenius (aside from Tester maybe but I don't know why he didn't qualify last time), and he's not at the level of Foxer/NesTea/Fruitdealer/HopeTorture just yet.
However, I think foreigners might have a chance to actually represent Protoss the best of all the races because it's so wide open.
Wish Fnatic would've sent TTOne over there too. Btw, where's Kiwi staying and who's he practicing with?
10:00AM is the registration times on Monday, followed by later time for later rounds. I'm not until the 6pm group for registration, which gives me enough time to finish teaching and get up to Seoul.
From what we've heard, there are only ~1500ish players this time, which is fewer than in season 2. That, and S2 had a lot of no-shows, makes me think they can more easily do two-days. Brackets would only have about 24 players in them to win through to the Ro64.
So many exciting players in the qualifiers. Might end up with a really solid Ro64.
Despite the front page poll, I'm rooting for INcontroL to make it through qualifiers. Even if he's knocked out in the Ro64 it'd just be plain cool to see him in it. Plus, he'll give one hell of an interview I'm sure

Problably people just don't read all the Team Liquid Weeklys, the thing is that you just notice when people think that you are in Korea, "no one" would care, or comment something (that's what i'm trying to say) about you being in Europe, so even if 95% of the community knows that you aren't in korea, you will only perceive the other part.

Qualifications are ongoing since 6 hours, it's 5pm KST and they are not even halfway through today's brackets. Look at those brackets, there are practically no byes. That's probably the doing of Boxer and Nada since their appearance last season pushed more players to SC2, but this is also going to be a problem. They will have to play until late night to finish the prelims on 2 days. Maybe some big name isn't used to playing that late and we will see some surprises in the korean evening/night hours

S-class is not autoinvite for the open season. That will only have an effect for the later invitationals held by GOM (next year). The open seasons are there to determine who get the S-class. So you can basically say that these open seasons are preliminaries for next years invitationals.

From your post history telling other people not to cry is pretty rich.
Anyways I'm hoping for one of the lesser known protoss in this season to become successful rather than the old favorites to contribute to the rather stale gameplay of most protoss matches, hopefully involving some of the more underused units.
Im quite pleased to see the 2 players from Team Liquid that have been trying the GSL since Season 1 to finally get a break into the RO64.
Congrats to Haypro and Jinro and lets hope we get more non-koreans passing the pre-qualifiers on the following days.
Theres already several high profiled players eliminated on this first day...guess it shows how volatile the pro scene in Korea is atm and that theres still plenty of unrevealed players with potential to enter the GSL. Its bad for NaDa and Inca and other pro-gamers but its also a good sign that the player pool isnt stagnant in any way.

First 2 GSL had over 10% more protoss than zerg, quit crying.
When Zerg was totally underrepresented, it was totally acceptable to complain. One race being poorly represented is always a bad thing. Its not like people are keeping score where "Well, since my race was good for a while, it should be bad for a while". It is in the best interest of everyone, not just the people who play that race, for a specific race to be equally represented.

HayprO didn't attend the first GSL qualifier? Agreed with regards to Jinro though, very happy to see him smashing it - illness and all!

To whoever is playing tomorrow, good luck!
Not that it matters, but HayPro has only tried for Season 2 and 3, he wasn't in Korea yet for season 1.
HuK and Ret play tomorrow though, good luck to them :D
2 foreigners already in with 6 more to play. Thats pretty sweet. Heck its 7 foreigners if you want to count Loner. If we get like 4-5 foreigners into the top 64 thats pretty impressive seeing as we only have about a dozen making the attempt. Best GSL ever!
being realistic I'm guessing 4 or 5 foriegners to GSL 3: Confirmed: Jinro/Haypro The remaining: Loner/Idra And a selection of huk/ret
Again I am sad to see the under representation of auir in the GSL, as much as TvZ is awesome umm can we see om PvX instead of mirrors in the quarters and upwards?
Nerdgasm if Tasteless takes the cake.
EDIT: HURR DURR tester is korean, and TLO is in europe
Cella has to make it to the Ro64 just so the korean announcers try to say his name,

hurr durr I'm so dumb also Cella HAS TO make it to the Ro64 just so people try to say his name EDIT: so is select lol that short list was favored players thought they sounded non-foreignery not sure what that short list is for, Idra and loner are lacking from it.
Man it looks like this is going to be another crappy GSL for Protoss. The only redeeming thing is that we'll probably have more foreigners to cheer for.
Moon qualified despite being a very occasional SC2 player, guy is soooo talented. I hope he makes the switch from WC3 when he sees how awesome GSL is in person.
On November 16 2010 02:36 stratanic wrote: there just 2 day for GSL3 I thnik... it mean there less player for this prelims?
Fewer players, but also virtually no no-shows due to a much more rigorous sign-up procedure, so I hear it is about the same number of people actually competing, but the brackets are much more dense.
Also, they are doing 2 days of qualifiers instead of 4.
Beginning to look like BW with a bunch of zergs, bunch of terrans, and very limited protoss.
But all it takes is one standout to represent Aiur. FD was able to do it in Season 1 for the swarm. Hopefully someone steps up for Protoss and carries this home like Reach did back in the days.

It's a shame all of our fav foreigners can't/don't make it, I was personally hoping incontrol would make it, if only because he is one of the more vocal players I find which means as fans we would have gotten an overall better insight into the whole experience.
I guess I'd also like a foreigner Protoss to cheer for... Hope Huk comes through and qualifies, I'm sure he can do it.

wow.. i knew protoss was bad atm but this is turning out too be even worse than when zerg was bad.
its also a bit funny when zerg was bad protoss players agreed but now that the roles are reversed zerg players just laugh and say protoss players suck : )
I know this wont be well received, but here it goes:
I'm not a big fan of HuK at all. Something about his attitude and rampant fanboy following doesn't sit right with me. But after looking at Day 1 results, and the disappointingly low amount of protoss players, I really want more Protoss to qualify. I also would love for SC2 to have a much bigger pool of nations playing in the big tournaments, rather than it being a "guess which Korean will obliterate everyone else." USA, Canada, anywhere in Europe, Africa, South America, you name it ffs. I just want to see it truly be a gigantic international tournament. The more foreigners, the more enjoyable the tournament will be.

Neither have many other top non-Protoss players. This early in the game's life plenty of great players are emerging from the woodwork (for example, see: BoxeR, NesTea) so upsets are kind of expected.

What are you talking about? Huk is amazing "and you....because you're hot". He doesn't take the game too seriously because it's just a game, but he's pretty awesome at it and works hard.
This gave me a random thought so i wrote this up.
Dragonball z comparison Huk is goku (maybe doesn't show off his intelligence, but his hard work will pay him huge dividends in the end). Idra is vegeta (the guy you don't like initially, but grow to admire for his commitment) Jinro is krillen (maybe not the most skilled, but works hard, can't sometimes surprise you) Haypro is yamcha (kinda underrated, kinda overrated, but never gives up) TLO is goten (relatively new, but has a huge potential, also kinda cute in an anime type of way) Ret is gohan (who has inborn skill that just needs to be brought out during tournaments) Nazgul is yajarobi (because he organized the team and because he knocked idra out of a tournament *a reference to yajarobi cutting off vegeta's tail*). InControl is King Kai (has a ton of experience and is good, makes a lot of jokes, likes to teach) Artosis is master Roshi (stalking girls, experienced, teaches a lot of noobs) Tasteless is the announcer guy (loves the game, probably won't be a pro) Day9 is Supreme Kai (knows a ton, is pretty good, but needs practice if he wishes to compete, most people still refer to him as an ultimate authority for basic stuff.)

Haha alright, i'll make a blog Post.
Ok i made a blog post, changed the characters to fit a little more
Inca, sangho.. even legalmind were better than any of the protoss who actually qualified... Ok so apparently MC is a don but his performances have been pretty bad so far, seems he has a weakness for cheese. I really can only see sSKS doing anything for the toss this season (I'm not a huge fan of NexGenius so far, just hasn't shown he's on the level of sSKS); I hope like hell tester qualifies. Otherwise I might as well back the foreigners - Jinro fighting!
ogsTop got knocked out twice, man. He really didnt recover from FD stomp.
He did though which is the weird thing. After season 1 in the korean team championship Top all killed TSL: fruitdealer, tester, and clide 3-0. He just cant seem to qualify for GSL again.
Did Moon really change over to Zerg from Terran? I always thought that race suited him considering his playstyle in War3. Glad he made the switch and qualified.

Why? I hate this kind of attitude. It makes the assumption that the only good Starcraft players are those players that people have already heard of. It was wrong in SC1 and it is even more wrong at this stage of SC2. No one in the world would have picked Foxer and NesTea to be the GSL2 finalists, but look, they made it, and they gave us an exciting tournament along the way. There is little reason to believe season 3 will be any different. Just because Nada and Ensnare failed to qualify doesn't mean this tournament will be any less awesome.

I think people just want big names to qualify so that there is some sort of continuity between seasons. Fans get attached to players for all sorts of reasons, but if there's a different set of players every single season then it's not much supporting anyone, as the players you like may not even get into the finals.
I mean, that's why everyone is upset about NaDa not qualifying - because they already know and love him.
I'm pretty psyched for tomorrow's qualifiers. I *really* hope HuK gets in, just so he gets a bit of a confidence boost, and more importantly time to practice in Korea. Obviously he's gonna practice whether he qualifies or not, but I think he'll improve really quickly if he qualifies and feels confident.
I don't see why so many people are complaining about protoss right now. The fact of the matter is that there aren't as many good Protoss players playing as there are good Zergs and Terrans. MC HongUn Eternal and anypro already qualified. Perhaps the people to beat inCa and BabyByeBye are going to show some really good results vs top Terrans and Zergs as well? Plus we still have Genius Ace and sSKS who need to qualify. Idc if people don't like Genius, he's one of the best hopes for Protoss so deal with it.

This is the reason SC2 will need something like proleague format to really be a success. Both in NA and Korea. IMO.

That is the samething that was said about Zerg when Zerg were considered "UP", fact of the matter is, the same Zerg players who weren't considered "good enough" are the very same Top Zerg players now. There hasn't been a single new face to Zerg.

probably cause you dont play protoss
Let me guess, you're one of the real Protoss players that is too busy complaining that they can't realize that they don't even have a legitimate reason to complain. Toss is in general weaker atm, they will be patched in the future. The champion of GSL during the time of zerg's weakness was a Zerg, the same could happen if a really good starcraft 2 player who plays Protoss emerges, however nobody has yet proven to be that immensely good and play Protoss at the same time. Speaking of GSL though, some top toss players lost, other (probably more accomplished) players are either already in it or still needing to qualify. There are so many top players fighting to stay on top but failing because there is so much new talent coming in. It's not just Protoss that's losing.
Because you are one of the guys that's too busy to realize the bigger picture, I went ahead and described it for you. I hope you are enlightened after reading it.
Even though i am a protoss player I don't mind that there aren't as many qualifying. Protoss matchups are kinda stale right now. DTs are becoming a bit more popular but stargate units are getting more and more rare. The only time i would use them would be to tank with colossus but thors can't be feedbacked now. I can barely stand to play because PvP and PvT have gotten boring, and I don't think there is a solid macro build vs zerg atm.

Shut up! Look around. This is a god damn R&S Thread. Keep that in the strategy section.
Is ST.Monster=JulyZerg? It said July was playing, but doesn't say what his I.D., he is no longer FantaPrime, he is on team ST, and Monster is the only other player besides ST.Superstar who we know is NOT July.

It's funny because all the top players (even ones who aren't qualifying) don't really complain about the balance of the race. They mostly just feel like it needs developing/better playing.
I'm super excited to see the one random guy play, hopefully he makes it to at least a bo5 round so we can see it come into play.. but i've never heard of him so i doubt it haha
like some Blizzard dude said, it's not important how many Protoss qualified for a big tournament to make a statement on the balance it's important to see how they lost.
and you can bet that Tester will get cheesed in every game because everybody knows him

Likewise, it seems that zerg has more players as well.

Each season seems to pass by quickly and now only the Finals are left for GSL Season 2. The Season 3 Preliminaries will be next week on Nov. 15th and 16th.
The maps for the Preliminary Rounds are, Set 1 : Xel’Naga Caverns Set 2 : Metalopolis Set 3 : Scrap Station
The proportions for each race are, Terran : 39.5% Protoss : 33% Zerg : 23.9% Random : 3.6%
The matches will be best of 3 matches. We hope that everyone coming over for the preliminaries does well and have fun participating.
I have a feeling map pool played a really really big role on who/what did and did not qualify. But - looking @ the list, looks like a beast. Can't wait for GSL 3.
I'd be really interested in some statistics. Like the total race distribution (all people who participated) and the race distribution of people who are considered as "high level" and participated. So we could gather some data in relativity to participants.
For example the ro64 list looks awful with only 12 P in. But as for the notable player list there was a total of 29 P. Compared to T in the list: 24 qualified, 19 out -> total 43 T.
Edit: Btw I know, there are some people missing. I just used it as an example to make my point more clear.
pretty sad to see all these foreigners knocked out even before we can see them in action...
even the qualif seem to be pretty hard to pass, maybe they should start the GSL at RO128 now with all the new talented players going there. I wouldnt mind them casting only half the games at this round, as long as we get to see out heroes!

Thank you.

Yea, I see your point, but those statistics are just statistics BEFORE the players show up So, in the end, there might have been a far lower percentage of protoss showing up, and a higher one of T / Z, I'm not sure. I don't understand this all too well. Would like to see the numbers though, of each race in the preliminaries, as opposed to the percentage, to get a better picture of it.
looking at who's qualified already, i think that idra is already guaranteed s-class status. no huge surprise given his previous results but it's nice to know
Cool, I was just about to make these myself, thanks for your effort.
All balance-QQ aside for one moment, I just like to state that protoss now has officially the lowest number of representatives percentage-wise OF ALL 3 GSL - worse than zerg in GSL 1 where everybody was "omfg zerg suxx wtf blizz fuuu". Therefore I think it's a bit funny how much resentments you still see around here if people complain about toss weakness, especially by zergs....give us a break for once will you? We had to endure your balance-QQ for 2 whole months for crying out loud!
Protoss isn't weak at all, honestly they're not playing it right. The problem with that statement I just said is unfortunate that it's true. No one is standing out and no one is coming up with crazygood strats in GSL. The funny thing is they have a whole bunch of tools at their disposal.

I think the main problem is that tosses can't really articulate why they're losing. With zergs early on, ZvT weakness could be explained by the fact that Terrans had a wide variety of early-game options, and Zergs could not scout to figure out which option they needed to prepare against. ZvP was a little more complicated, but the main gripe from Zergs was that Protosses' very early game options (zealot pressure/cannon rush) kept Zerg at a disadvantage from the beginning, and Protosses were able to use forcefields and colossi to demolish any Zerg army short of Ultras in an engagement.
I haven't heard a similar level of detailed argument from Tosses as to why PvZ and PvT are currently difficult. So while the QQing of Zergs was given a lot of respect, Protoss QQ will probably be written off until someone steps up and develops a theory as to why Toss is UP.

at the moment I feel like protoss just needs more of a harass tool, like reavers in brood war. As soon as something is figured out, hopefully it can turn around a little bit, but at the moment we're so straight forward attack with a brute army.

Unfortunately both the colossus and immortal drops were nerfed which makes it difficult to pull off.
The top players though seem to think it is more about the gimmicky nature of there defense. I missed FF at the beginning can mean you just lose so you seem to have less room for errors.
On topic: I counted 5 foreigners qualifying (Idra Fighting) I am sad though that none of the Chinese players made it. I would have liked to see Loner play again to draw in more Chinese fans. It seems though that china may count Sen (in one of the national tournaments I think he played under the Chinese flag). If so then maybe he can take this and help involve them in Esports.

This is very true, nevertheless I'm convinced that it's indeed much more complicated with Toss - Toss suffer from a huge variety of "small" stuff, while not having any "obvious" problem. Therefore many people try to QQ about many different stuff, which makes toss seem like crybabies who like to complain about everything.
But while changing "everything" certainly isn't a valid option, ppl need to understand that it's all those "little" things that lead to problems when combined.
Just to name the mule: in theory perfectly fine, evens up chrono-boosting probes. Nevertheless it allows for insane comebacks, allows for mineral-boosting like crazy when a CC is lifted to the gold, etc. You can't really "articulate" it, or even found it with theory-craft, because theory-craft tells us that's fine. Nevertheless after losing games due to Terran comebacks after having lost countless SCVs, this is definitely something worth considering. Also the general problem of zealots being awsome when they "can" hit and being crappy when they can NOT. Balancing melee units in general is extremely difficult. But one problem of zealots vs terran is, that even with charge zealots still require perfect positioning AND force-fields, otherwise they just die without doing any damage..like...at all. Then there is the problem of the huge variety of terran timing-pushs - none of these timing-pushs is incredibly overpowered in "itself", it's the problem that terran can play standard an be fine while ALSO having many timing-pushs protoss has to account for in his gaming-plan. Terran doesn't have to account for anything except a 4-gate. Again, how do you articulate this? By claiming each one of these timing pushes is OP? Most definitely not. By claiming only one of those is OP? Doesn't touch the core of the problem....
EDIT: just realized that I wasn't posting in the "why is protoss doing so bad..."-thread, SORRY, didn't want to ruin this thread!

This, in the interviews, some zerg players said they were basically banking on the third set to save their asses... Also I feel scrap station is a very good timing attack map for terran, which may be why players like HuK or Tester lost... so sad sigh
Metalopolis can be a zerg map if long distance by ground, wich it is at least 50%, and scrap station is the most zerg based map, ever.
I would like to see statistics about how many zerg players qualified with Long Distance in Metalopolis, then Scrap.
Of course, if the maps where Lost Temple, Kulas and Steppes there would be, maybe, 5 zergs so maps are the most important factor to balance, right now.

This is one underlying cause. I think without Scrap station being map 3, prot may still be slightly underrepresented, but this was the real killer. Map 3 should have been xelnaga or something considered balanced for all races.
Scrap was the cause of the mass amount of zerg players qualifying, but I want to know what other map they could have used without one race crying imba.

Sands Temple DQ Steppes Shakuras Basin

This.
I think they genuinely tried, Xel Naga and Metal are arguably the most balanced maps and they were the first 2. The tie breaker was going to be favored for someone.

Koreans never do loser picks.
I think that XC-Meta-Shakuras may have been better than scrap.

Slows the process down?
What maps were used for the last season qualifiers, could it explain the lack of toss this time around?
edit: Shakuras should have been in there. For some reason forgot about it but it seems more balanced than even metal because there is less spawn variability.

Yep I'm wondering as well. His twitter seems bugged (shows stuff typed 9minutes ago for like 9 hours now). Anyway, his name is nowhere to be found on gomtv ( http://www.gomtv.net/news/272/0 or http://www.gomtv.net/news/267/0) so in case he competed I don't think he qualified.
Okay, now let's look at race distribution across all 3 seasons of GSL: - 74 39% - 58 30% - 59 31% (rounded this one up) - 1 1% (rounded this one down)
As for maps, they should just play a Bo3 exclusively on Metal.
What this statistic is missing is that we've run through a couple of patches and a lot of metagame changes in the meantime.
Though for the variety and entertainment I wished to see a more balanced bracket. I think what made GSL2 in the end a bit less entertaining was the pure TvZ matchup row. Seeing this makes me doubt that it will be any difference in this 3rd season, 1 or less P in the Ro8...
Its true that discussing balance issues at this state of the game, where it is already surprisingly well balanced excluding some minor issues, is very very hard. It could also be a leak of Protoss idols who show off strengths and weakness of a solid P play and how to use it.
I refuse to believe that these are the official brackets. The odds of such pairs of players getting grouped together by random chance is... well basically incredibly small and I am PRAYING we don't see Liquid v Liquid, GSL1 Champ vs GSL2 Champ Ro64, Boxer v Foxer round 32, etc/
Come on. If there is a God, these brackets will be found to be false.
Look at the order of the players listed here and then check the order of the 2nd half of the listed brackets. They are identical. I doubt Gom is going to leave it like that.

Then the fix would have been to throw two 'imba' maps first, and have the tie break on a fair map.
Go with something like DQ, Temple, Metalo.
But their choice might force Blizzard to update the map pool, which is good in itself.
Looking at the number of Protoss Player is horribly depressing 2:2:1 ratio !? are you serious!? I've always thought the game was fairly balanced and I still think so but man... this is depressing. Has T and Z innovation really soared that much higher than the collective minds of Aiur!? This is deeply disturbing to me, I would love to see something more balanced in terms of player count because to be entirely honest this makes me somewhat jaded and disinterested in S3 GSL :/

Protoss doesn't have much variety in their builds. Plus, we need strong units like Colossi and HTs to even try to survive.

To bad only 12 tosses did make it. Looks like 3rd time in a row TvZ and TvT in Ro8+, to bad because a lot of non-koreans made it, so it will be interesting. With HuK and sSKS it would be even more interesting, but I guess we need to wait for another patch that will hopefully broke toss now...

Protoss fail once again, this is starting to become depressing. Genius, MC, we toss players trust you will play a good season. Really sad for tester, I hope he gets another chance to get his S-Class, or he might just fade into oblivion.
Just a side note: 시나브로 means 'little by little' or 'before you know it', maybe u can put that in parentheses so ppl can recognize by english? 창조의아침 means 'morning of creation'.

Tester didn't make it again??? Oh my goodness. Huk didn't make it? by the way artosis' twitter was describing, one would've thought he definitely made it. so many foreigners didn't make it =(
Is that a typo or did he actually play terran? Or is there any other Sen i don't know of.. ?
Anyways, I'm kinda suprised to see that many zergs... I feel a little sorry for the protoss players. I would definitely have liked to see Tester in GSL3. He is one of my favourite players and probably the only non-zerg player who I would have liked to win the entire tournament. Well, I guess we're gonna see some ZvZs in that tournament. At least they are more interesting to watch than the average TvT (imho).
edit: Oh, I just noticed that SangHo isn't in there as well. Thats a bummer, he really impressed me in the last season .
So we got 5 (?) foreigners in the Ro64, that is about 8%. Lets hope the percentage is going to grow from round to round. It would make watching GSL much more fun.

Haha it's pretty funny to see all of the top NA players get stomped out of the GSL. Anyway, it's pretty clear Protoss is the weakest race and anyone who doesn't think so is simply blind. All of this "protoss aren't doing the right strategy blah blah" is hilarious. Can't wait for patches.

While I agree with you, I also think that the qualifying map pool had a lot to do with it. Scrap station especially is horrible for Protoss against both races.

yes, looks like it. There are just so few constant players. Idra and HopeTorture are amongst them. But that is how single-elimination works. Sometimes you win, sometimes you loose, with group stages this would be a bit different.

To those blaming the map pool, you cant blame GSL for using the official maps. If theres a problem with the maps its blizzards job to either remove them or fix protoss so they can compete on them.

Every time I heard his name come up the phrase "best protoss in the world" is lurking somewhere in the sentence. If you say he is one of the top then yea I can live with that. However, best in the world? Failing to qualify twice? Now that is overrated. After Artosis and Idra hyped him up certainly his reputation exceeded his skills in the foreign community I guess Idra did that because he got beaten by Tester.

I believe the hype was during beta and immediately post launch. There was little to no news of Korean players at the time with the only really known good players were tester, cool and rainbow.

1 less Zerg and 1 less Terran (HuK lost to Aya). Outside of that, I think it's interesting to see the consistent players out there, most of them aren't that flashy it seems; Idra, Check and ITR for example.

You are right he may not be the best protoss in the world, and people saying that kind of statements might exaggerate a bit. However we cannot deny the fact that Tester showed some INSANE decision making as well as top level micro. Personally when thinking about Tester I don't refer to the beta era because a lot of things have changed. But in my opinion he is definitely one of the best protosses.

Look at the increase in performance by NesTea from season 1 and season 2. I don't see why a Protoss player couldn't pull off a similar feat.
Yeah but the reason that NesTea was so good in season 2 though is because the game lagged and he looked at Demuslim's screen and then restarted the game.

The hype isn't just based on people spewing out words though. Believe it or not there are tournaments in Korea besides the GSL and Tester has repeatedly performed very well in them. He won the last GomTV event before GSL (Star2Siege) beating a field of players like Ensnare/Maka/Cool pretty convincingly.
The most recent broadcast games (TSL's games from the GomTV special) he looked very good which is why its such a shock he didn't qualify again. He beat Rain (GSL qualifier), Fruitdealer, and then beat Sangho playing as Terran.
Throughout the beta he was considered to be the best player on the Korean server. Now, you can argue that the competition has gotten better - and it has. There are many more A-teamers and ex-A-teamers playing SC2 now.
But when you watch his games the skill is there. His mechanics/army control just seem a little better than the all the other protoss. I'm assuming he lost to something similar to last time - Terran timing pushes. Either way though losing two Bo3 series doesn't make you overrated.
Despite the two qualifying losses he still has the best GSL performance of any protoss (reaching Ro8 along with Genius).
I still believe Tester is on of the best protoss in the world, because, as of right now, no protoss are doing shit in the GSL. Inca, Tester, and SangHo all 3 failed to qualify (that's 3 of the top 4 protoss in Korea...)

this is correct! for those who don't know, in korea there are clans which are largely unsponsored groups that practice together and put their clan IDs in their names, and then there are teams which have sponsors, usually houses where they live together, compete together in team events, and so forth. nexgenius was one of the founders of NsP's sc2 clan, they have a pretty well-known scbw clan. he's still a part of the ZeNEX team (as an additional note, Nex and zenith are still clans and zenex was a team formed out of players from both)

that doesnt make sense to me tho. Arent wc3 pros known for their micro? And terrain and especially toss need way more micro the zerg so you'd thinl they would go to the more micro intensive races and not zerg who is mostly about hitting your injects and spreading creep.

You can see in the interview Superstar is a completely different guy (in the GSL3 interviews in Community News). Superstar and July are both big guys, but superstar is a lot taller and his face looks a lot different.
Koreans seem to think that Protoss is the most UP race atm, most of the patch changes were nerfs to the Toss race, such as VR and zlot timing.
Also, Scrap Station was the 3rd map that Toss players had a tough time on (Incontrol, HuK) where they got eliminated, easy naturals for other races and colossus easily get picked off by vikings.
July qualified this season?! Yes! Finally, and about time he did! One more to root for... As long as he ain't paired with a foreigner, that is... Or a legend.

I'd say BoxeR and maybe Nada. That's about it.
I would say definitely instead of maybe for NaDa since he was more decorated (titanic list of career accomplishments) and was considered a bonjwa. But of course since he didn't qualify, BoxeR and July are the two main BW legends to look out for. People might want to look out for Moon too since from what I understand he was essentially the bonjwa in the WC3 scene for a number of years.
I personally would root for BoxeR, the foreign Zergs, and any Protoss over July, but I'm a silly, biased Protoss fan.

wow. I just looked over the protoss list, gawd, wtf is up with our race. jeez. 2 S-ranks, and a bunch of new comers/ people I didn't find important enough to mention. we freakin' lost tester and inca. someone who studies detailed aspects of the game needs to complain about this.
rofl, anyone else find it ironic that protoss is "Victory after Victory" despite having the least out of the 3 races/highest percentage of named players not qualify.
Looks like a bunch of good named protoss players made it through! I also wish that the random guy gets protoss 100% of the time, even if thats not the case, I think those will make for the most interesting games. I can't wait to see the brackets, I will feel all warm inside watching one of the Liquid guys knock out Idra ZvZ style!
Goodluck to all the foreigners. My hunch though is that only 1 of them will advance to ro16 and probably 3 already get knocked out at ro64. Really sad to see protoss doing so bad.. I am starting to think it's a balance issue now in combination with the maps (maps which used to favor P in PvZ now favor Z because of roach aggresion).
Thats a lot of zerg's. I think nesttea has a good chance of reaching the r04 and poss. the final., his zvz is really good as he's shown in gsl2 and with all these zerg's anyone looking to make a deep run will have to have good zvz. probably won't be a toss in the r04 maybe even not the r08.
Can't believe I'm saying this, but too many zergs. Just gonna be too many possible mirrors. Maybe race distribution will even out after r64 and 32 though.
I think with so many ZvZ's theres a high probability that one of the Zerg favorites (NesTea, FD, etc) will be knocked out. Its pretty much a crapshoot once banelings are in play, and just one mismicro can mean the game...
I wonder how many people in this thread have actually seen those race titles before this week (clearly not many from reading the posts).
Really happy that so many foreigners made it through (all of them being very strong players too). Great chances to see a few make it far in i'm hoping.
We noticed that a lot of people are requesting to see the games of the Preliminary Rounds to see how the players qualified or disqualified. So we will provide the game VODs of the GSL Season 3 Preliminary Rounds.
Gisado will select about 50 games from the Preliminaries and broadcast these games throughout a 3 day period. We will upload the VODs of these broadcasts on our Season 3 website, which will be opened later today.
Please understand that the broadcast is in Korean and since we broadcast the replays of each games the quality maybe a bit lower than our usual VODs.
To watch these VODs does not require any Season tickets and will be available for free just by signing into our website. The VODs will be available until the start of GSL Season 3, so the VODs will be deleted on Nov 22nd along with the comments under each VOD.
We hope a lot of you can enjoy the great games from the GSL Season 3 Preliminary Rounds. Thank you.

Really though, I hope Toss can finally get its fruit dealer. Tester out 2 seasons in a row has made it hard to find a consistent Toss to root for.
Despite all the crying about how an unlucky draw in the qualifiers may cause a favored player to be out too early, there's actually a good number of players who have stayed consistent. 14 people appearing in a 64-person bracket with >1000 in the qualifiers three times in a row is quite impressive.
hopetorture. zernio, check are 3 out of the top of my head that made all 3. Hyperdub, clide, fruitdealer 3 more. Polt prime i think made all 3, hongun also, genius too. So yea, idra and 9 more made all 3 gsl

I still don't understand why everybody is obsessed with Tester. Yes, he was really good in beta(when tons of other really good players weren't even playing the game yet), but did you see how he went out of GSL1? It was pretty weak play. Everybody else is clearly surpassing him in skill. Haven't you seen how the level of play increased by leaps and bounds between season 1 and 2? He can't just maintain his current skill level to be in the run, but he has to keep improving along with everybody else. He'll have to prove me wrong to change my mind on that.

Here's a challenge for whoever is up to it: Make a list of Clan success in the qualifiers. Not just number of each clan represented in the Ro64 (ZeNex or fOu seem to be near the top from a glance), but the number of clan members who played qualifiers and the % who made it to the Ro64..
This would give a nice little picture of which clans apparently have the highest average skill level (It's obviously Liquid , but who's 2nd? )
I'm super excited for GSL to start up again. I'm still not over HuK losing though. I'm happy for the Liquid guys but it felt like since HuK was last and arguably the most favorited to qualify, it felt like all the undercards won but the main event lost, leaving a bittersweet aftertaste.

I wouldn't have considered HuK the favored to qualify... all of the other TL guys have way more experience in this setting that HuK. I would actually have been surprised if HuK had made it.

IMO HuK was the least favored to qualify.. for a couple of reasons.. first of all, he plays protoss, which is really the underdog here.. second.. of all of liquid's players this season, HuK seems to have the least "mature" playing style, he's good, but he needs to be way more solid to compete against koreans.. third.. and related to him being protoss and so many zerg players being around.. I believe the last map in the qualy pool was scrap station.. really tough times.
I think that by staying in korea for a while he can make HUGE progress though, in his games there's lots of talent, he just needs to clear the rough edges in his play and he'll become better. Ret, Jinro and Haypro look more "seasoned" than Huk, and I believe this has been true for some time now.

Gotta agree with this. I felt Jinro and Haypro were the two most likely to qualify.

How was HuK "arguably the most favorited to qualify"? That were Ret, due to his experience, and Jinro, because of his recent success. HuK certainly is an exceptional gamer and a community favorite, but one shouldn't forget the proportions there. I also hoped he'd qualify, because 4/4 TL in the RO64 would have been super awesome ... but well. Next time.

yes this is quite obvious.. which is why i asked for the ratio of #Ro64's to #Played In Qualifiers for each clan..
I don't really get your point.. And I didn't mean its literally a measure of average skill level.. i just meant it would give a little tiny indication, as good as we're going to get without looking at ladder rankings..

I'd love if somebody could do this.. It'd be pretty tricky I imagine, since a lot of people may not have the right clan tags on. I have a question for TLers. Do you actually think foreigners have a chance of winning GSL or is it just fanboyism? Cuz everyone inside korea kinda shrugs off guys like IdrA, Huk, TLO as being more of a sideshow attraction than actual title contender. (I have friends in Korea who told me this)

what a provocative post it is!
actually it goes like this: it is less likely that a foreigner wins a gsl tournament, because there are less foreigners.
but there is absolutely no difference between american/chinese/korean/swedish/whatever players besides practice and talent. so calling guys like Idra/Huk/TLO or every well known foreigner "sideshow attractions" is simply retarded. especially Idra who almost certainly will be seeded in the 2011 gls which is a badass achievement. also other guys like jinro who are in shape right now are fucking scary players.

Yeah I think calling those guys a sideshow attraction is a bit harsh. Obviously there haven't been as many foreigners in years past and they haven't done terribly great but they have a strong showing in this GSL it seems (anyone have an exact number?) and after watching Ret's showing in the qualifying matches he looked scary. I'm looking forward to seeing how he does in the tournament. Idra is of course a solid player too but it seems like despite his very strong macro game he always runs into someone with a cheese that he doesn't have an answer for. Best of lucky to him this time, God knows I'll be rooting for him. Go Zerg!

Can't say much for the others, but IdrA is pretty feared in Korea. We know that in Season 1, a lot of the Korean players were getting together to help the opponent beat him.
On another note, SlayersBoxer said his favorite player was TLO. Doesn't really mean much, but that's pretty deng awesome.
But yea, I think that they have a great chance of winning, especially seeing how so many of them made it in this time.

Okay first of all, ppl gathering up to beat idra wasn't because he was scary. It was bcuz they didn't like him and wanted to see him put in his place. Second, boxer said his favorite player was TLO to show no favoritism towards any korean player. He cleverly avoided any hostility by naming a player who was foreign. BTW the stuff about the foreigners being a joke is just what a lot of everyday korean gamer thinks. It may be unfair or wrong but that is just what they think. You can't argue that. Its a fact.

Very slim chance but not because of the number of participants in the GSL. I don't think there were that many koreans in blizzcon but NexGenius won the whole thing and he even said it was easier than qualifying for the GSL. Sure words come out of that arrogant guy can't be completely taken as truth but it is still some indication. I still think there is a gap between the best of the West and the best of Korea.
Ok, TL hate race balance tread, so i'll just post this in case none did:
Race Players % (ideal 33,33%) Difference Z 27 42,86% Z +9,86% (uhm ... something is wrong?) T 24 38,10% T +5,10% (... so so) P 12 19,05% P -13,95% (something defintely wrong)

Yeah i miss tester quite a bit, he seemed like an awesome guy and just a sheer beast at starcraft 2. I guess korea found out his flaws and keep exploiting them unfortunately.

Total 63 100,00%
And yes ... i have a P icon ...
The previous GSL's protoss and terrans have been overrepresented.

Terran has been overrepresented in every GSL and in every round besides champion, yes. Protoss was overrepresented before patch 1.1 and never since.

Well, people don't consider IdrA, Huk and TLO as title contenders here neither. Maybe IdrA, but most people are pulling for a Ro16/8 showing for foreigners. In a somewhat related note, as a korean myself, and frequent visitor to korean sites and forums, I can tell you foreign players are very appreciated and cheered by koreans. They really want the scene to become truly international, with top players coming from every region (but again, who doesn't right?)
Pretty sure it's a mistake as he was playing Protoss during All-Stars today..
Also Ret is listed as Terran heh. TheBestfOu, ST.Monster, BitByBitPrime and Gumiho seem to be incorrect too :/
Edit: Also Junwi / GuineaPig, TSL.Rain / DreamizEr and Rache / BoggieBoy have their races mixed up as well.
The entire block of matchup data, including race and maps but not player name or ID, are identical between Nov. 24 1PM matches and Nov 25. 1 PM matches. Those for Nov 25 make sense, but not for Nov 24. My guess is that they simply got copied over. So we know that matchups but not the maps for Nov 24 afternoon matches, and everyone saying Ret got the best draw might have another opinion once GOM fixes this and we see the maps he'll actually be playing on.
What do you guys think about my prediction for the tournament? I didn't know all of the players so I couldn't properly judge all matches but whatever, it was fun. Bracket in the link with my choices. Click to enlarge it.

I posted the correct maps in the other topic over here. Brackets are unchanged.

I'm unsure as well, but since the Ro64 qualifiers have a slight rank higher above those in proceeding seasons, it may mean that both Artosis and Cella might be considered A class players (which would be SWEET).

The military style ranks are not being used for Code S and Code A. See this thread for more details on how it actually works now that GomTV has finally released that information.
In regards to Code A, anyone who finished ro32 or better, or qualified for more than one GSL will be guaranteed at least Code A. Anyone who qualified for one GSL and lost in ro64 (such as TorcH, Artosis, and Cella), will be tied for the last few spots in Code A. Unfortunately, I don't think GomTV has released any information on how they will break the tie, but I'd imagine they'd have a tournament since there will likely be around 45-60 players tied for 5-20 Code A spots. Hopefully they'll at least have a chance to play for Code A and GomTV won't do some arbitrary ranking.
I was looking on Liquipedia 2 and noticed that 3rd place / bronze was being tracked for the GSL. I was just wondering how they determine which semi-finalist gets 3rd? Is it overall W/L?

Distribution stayed about equal with just T and Z switching their ratio's.
I'm not surprise since a lot of unnamed ZERGS qualified this season Tho Its disappointing that kyrix got eliminated Wonder how many will react to this lol for all the terran "QQ"
Protoss's only chance is guineapig now because genius is gone, these fOu guys are SICK though, they have been ripping apart the best players in the world and TSL is owning this year too. It seems like anyone in these teams is going to be super hard to stop

Isn't MC still in it too? He can go pretty far I'd guess as well. So long as he doesn't do some silly crappy all-in or odd counters
why the hell there's steppes of war in every match -.- so unfair, i know its random but its annoying i think this map was used 70% Preventing a 3rd zerg champ i guess? :D Team distribution 6 PRIME 4 fOu 3 OGS 3 ST 3 TSL 2 IM 2 Liquid 1 EG

this will be the game for IdrA to prove his worth to the doubters of this community. IMmvp is very highly regarded among us foreigners and the korean players themselves as well. IMNesTea thinks he's the best TvZ'er out there too, so we'll see how grack fares. HYPED UP!
no chance idra will win but i really hope he does win MVP has Nestea and Fruitdealer to practice with -.- nuff said And the fact that the map is so bad against zerg

I thought he got Scrap, Steppes and Metal, seems like a balanced ish pool (scrap for Z, Steppes for T and metal is fairly neutral unless its close spawns)

opposite spawns is just as imba for z as close spawns is for t vertical spawns is the only balanced one, really
8 TERRANS 4 ZERGS 4 PROTOSS Im happy for protoss but I'm sad that some of my favorite zergs got eliminated Nestea and Fruitdealer and July Zerg for a hat-trick
Anyone else having trouble with Gom's website? I've been looking forward to the Jinro game all day and it has yet to be spoiled for me, but there dang site won't load up the video.

Site is laggy, I concur.
For me it's not just laggy, but I can't watch at all. =/ Would really like to be able to see yesterday's matches before they go live tonight.
I'm stuck at Jinro's match as well. The site is indeed sloow but has anyone had any success watching other matches? or has gomtv put anything out stating they are working on this? never had this problem before, s1-s3.

Same here on all points. I've been looking everywhere I can think for some official response, but I have found none.
A Protoss favorite? Wait what is this I dont even. Looking forward to the games, since I feel we are at the point with no more favorites, where everyone can take the whole tournament. Gogo Jinro fighting!

The funny thing is if you add up the % for all of the Protoss players, it adds up to 38.17%, so based on the favored players, you'd think Protoss is the favored race. Yet the race protoss only has 31.89%, making it the lowest...

Well, 2 top tier players have a higher chance than 3 not quite as good players, it makes sense.
Woah, both fruit dealer and nestea are out? The sc2 scene is so inconsistent right now, can't wait to see one emerge consistently victorious over the rest for a reign of victory.
Single elimination tournaments turn out like that. It's hard to repeat because players get knocked out by other skilled players. Players of equal skill get knocked out at varying stages based on their draw. Consistency is better than brilliance for these formats.
Yup, that's what single elimination is about. A zerg with good ZvT and ZvP could get knocked out by a good ZvZ player, for example. Or a strong player with weakness can get knocked out by that one weakness. Typically, a macro player losing to an early aggression player. Whereas a balanced reactive player would lose to a macro player but beat an early aggression player.

What do you expect, SC2 is still a new game. Its still too early for one person to reign on top.
So awesome to see Jinro in the final four. Regardless of whether he wins or loses, making it this far in the tournament is a humongous accomplishment for himself and the other players. Its kind of neat seeing all these great players winning tournaments without 3 or 4 guys just absolutely crushing everyone...yet. Makes me want to get off my butt and improve my game.
