Congrats Chris dude! Good result <3
like i said in the other i was rooting for Kiwikaki in the finals to take it , but the player that impressed me the most during this tourney was SeleCT
The PvP was amazing.
grats huk
This tournament was very fun to watch. Socke definitely impressed me the most, especially in his game against drewbie. Should be nick named Never Give up Toss or something.
Great casting by day9 and jp, however was overall disappointed with the quality of the matches.
Plexa has been saying all the time that Socke owns, guess he was right
Where are the replays to these games?
are there replays or vods available?
tourney was meh, I was happy about socke, but IEM was a hundred times better in almost every aspect. MLG felt almost more like an random online tourney.
I felt we should of had more top quality games streamed to us, Incontrol vs machine, kiwikakis beastly road to the WB final etc, but overall was decent and enjoyable gj mlg and gratz to the winners.
Mothershiiiiiiip
So, yeah, socke
unfortunate that gsl was same weekend
Socke did great against Drewbie. His storms just barely kept him in the game, and actually started to catch him up. It was nothing short of amazing.
Way to go Socke, if you are reading this.
Also Congratulations to HuK, you were the one I was cheering for from the beginning.

double elimination really confuses me .. why not single elimination format ??

it seems like that western esports uses double elimination alot more. koreans are all single elim

IEM definitely produced a lot of very entertaining matches. IMO anyway. But really it's all about luck. You aren't always going to get 40+ minute long macro matches.
BUT they could've picked and choose which matches to cast better. Why show Tyler roflstomping Jetty when there is Incontrol and Machine match RIGHT THERE in the same round? And Socke vs Drewbie game 3 was definitely the highlight of the tourney. So exciting!
Other things they could've done better was show the audience and players more, to give us a better sense of what the event is like. Maybe give us a close up of a cute Korean girl and watch her cover her face with a piece of paper. We got a lot of talking heads during delays which they should've just cut to commercial or something instead of giving us the idea that the match would actually start soon.
But they got a lot right. The live blog was nice to keep track of the rest of the tournament, but that feature should've been on by default. I forgot to turn it on at one point. Great giving all the casters friggin sweat blazers (well except Husky, he got a sweater) to add that extra bit of professionalism. It was easy to find the stream and the schedule which was a problem for me for the IEM (right on the front page). And I said this before, but I like how most audio issues were addressed very quickly (Day9 talking too loud into the mic and then immediately his inbound was adjusted). During the interviews, the casters really need to shove that mic into the players mouths, half the time we couldn't hear them because of that.
In theory, the more opportunity you give the best players to play. The more often the best players will win. This is the main reason behind a double elimination tournament.
I really enjoyed InControl's matches and was rooting for him after the LZgamer victory.
Overall, I would of liked to see the casting jump around more. I think there would be more value in broadcasting more variety. Only doing 1 of a series then jumping into a nother series for game 2 and picking another series for game 2 of each round. Logistically, this would be a complete nightmare I know. I would just wanted more of it.

"A double-elimination tournament allows players to lose twice (usually two best-of-three sets) before being eliminated. This setup is likely the most common type of tournament format run for video games throughout the country, across any medium. Double elimination allows for more accuracy in results than single elimination."
http://www.mlgpro.com/content/related/214504/Double-Elimination-Brackets
"The double-elimination format has some advantages over the single-elimination format, most notably the fact that third and fourth places can be determined without the use of a consolation or "classification" match involving two contestants who have already been eliminated from winning the championship. Additionally, in a double-elimination format better teams are likely to progress further in the tournament. Suppose in a single-elimination tournament the best team plays the second best team in the first round - the second best team will be eliminated right away, having only played one game. Then, a more mediocre team with a more favorable seeding could potentially win several games, play the best team in the finals, and come away with second place. (Usually, good seeding would help avoid this, but it is an issue nonetheless.) A double-elimination tournament would allow the second best team to keep winning (in the loser's bracket) and eventually work their way back up to their rightful position of second place."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-elimination_tournament
Personally, I like Double Elimination tournaments more for the reasons mentioned by MLG and Wikipedia there. If you go versus IdrA in round 1, you're probably fucked over unfairly just by merits of seeding when you could have gotten a lot farther and potentially won big bucks.
Awesome tournament. Spent too much time watching this than doing sth productive :p As a spectator I prefer single elimination because you always know who is gonna win the finals in double elimination.
Socke did really well. I was rooting for PainUser though. v.v

On August 29 2010 09:06 MadZ wrote: double elimination really confuses me .. why not single elimination format ??
Single elimination only really works when there is only one winner (and in this case 8 people "won" by receiving a cash prize). What if the first game was between the person who ultimately got second place and the person who ultimately got first place? The person who would have gotten second place does not even finish in the top 8 under the rules of single elimination. Double elimination fixes that problem where there is more than one "winner".
HuK!! Although KiwiKaki still impressed me the most.
What's funny about this tournament is that I don't think we saw any of LastShadow or Sjow's games broadcast even though they came in 4th and 5th place in standings (unless I missed them). And yea... Socke was very impressive, it's too bad he wasn't invited to IEM. He might've been the Protoss hope there.

Glad HuK won, but honestly I thought the coverage sucked, the casting was meh, and 2500$ is barely enough to pay bills.
But I've always hated MLG so I guess I'm pretty biased.
Amazing tournament. Cool to see two Canadians in the final match XD
Congrats to Huk!
Too bad none of SjoW's games were streamed (unless I'm mistaken?), but nice to see him quietly finish in 5th place and get a cut of the winnings. Also some pretty impressive Protoss play in this tournament~
Where are the Socke vs Drewbie VoDs/Replays?

2500 for two days work isn't enough for you?
I was never much of a HuK fan, but WOW, the control he shows in PvP is just extraordinary.
i saw a replay pack of Socke[pG] waaaaay back in BW, so i was not at all surprised by his performance. Hes a fucking baller.
When sundance looks at the stream numbers, he might raise the prizepool, who knows
Socke and Huk both did amazing
Hm, I've always thought Huk had the strongest PvP outside Korea, Kiwikaki the strongest PvZ and Socke the strongest PvT, funny how they finish in the top 3.
is there any way to get VODs or Replays of the socke games? (the epic PvT he played)
Culmination of the tournament for me was Husky shouting about storms in Socke vs drewbie. We all know how Husky shouts about storms, but man, if any storms ever deserved the shouting, those were it. Socke is one tough mother(ship)f(eedb)acker.
Socke impressed me the most against drewbie. If you haven't seen it, watch it now.
Seriously, NOW
are there seriously going to be no VODS of this?

Plus however much practice it takes to become the best player in north America.
$2500 is pretty small considering. Ask Huk how many hours he's spent practicing over the last couple of months and I guarantee you just about anyone reading this could work their normal job for the same time and earn more than $2500.

Being a pro gamer is most definitely far from being a viable profession. Especially in america. I think even in Korea, if you aren't some star super famous gosu player you get paid peanuts. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The Day1 thread recommended Catz vs Lzgamer and I'd like to see that set. If there's no vods yet, are there at least replays?
On August 29 2010 12:00 Divinek wrote: are there seriously going to be no VODS of this?
No... MLG has said there will be VODs available for all casted games and replays available for all games. It'll probably just take them a few days. Remember how many matches were played here due to a 64 player base and double elimination.

It's not consistant you can't really consider it 2500 for two days work really, let's say HuK would win one big tournament like this every 3 months, that would be only 10 000$/year so yeah it's not that much
great job to huk though, awesome players in the finals

lol so many terrans in this tourny but none of them came close to winning it. Dreams do come true :D

Anyone have an idea of what was the amount of watchers for this stream? It had to be pretty large.

What happened with Nony? I wanted to see him win!

he did bad, for a liquid player dissapointing

I understand him losing to Inc. The dude's a bear. But who was that agh guy he lost to first? And how did he beat Nony? Cheese?
so now that HuK won is fat-ass headphones worn over hoodie-hood going to be the new fashion trend?
I was really impressed by Socke, getting nocked into the LB so early and still taking the Third was incredible.
HuK on the other hand looked so strong from the beginning to the end. He deserves this. GGs
are there any replays out? unfortunately couldnt watch day2
I'm surprised this picture didn't make it out of SFW thread, I find it really amusing, and it is related to MLG so here's a repost
ROFL at both Day9's stand-up (dinner on 8, movie on 10, and if that fails, harassment on 14) and at that great pic. Nice work gents.
i gotta say i enjoyed all of the casters and i have gone to mlg before and i will go again when it comes to dallas. great tourny only complaint is that i wish we could have seen some of the matches in the first round that were not random name v pro and seen some pro v pro but its the first mlg with sc2 in it so im sure they will be better at it next time around.
shame i had to miss the finals, glad to see alot of Protoss won this, HuK, Kiwikaki and Socke really deserves it
looking forward to next MLG event
woah top 3 all protoss! nice!
congratulations and thanks for some epic games!

Huk and kiwi deserve all the respect. Both played inspired. Socke did amazing but he had 1 build pvp and it was pretty shallow of course my perspective is a little more than biased heheh. I took 13th btw! Pretty happy with that considering my road
Brad you also need a BIG BIG shoutout for doing some amazing live threads and tournament threads in general mad probz to you <3

Wait. Is that the infamous LastShadow?
HuK, Kiwi & Cauthon were all fantastic. =]

Canadian heroes FIGHTING!

yes
and he also had by far the hardest road to the final 4. was kind of disappointed to see such a quick finals D: and socke only doing one thing every pvp was meh xd..

I wanna see the phoenix play soooo bad....
still waiting waiting for vods :/

I'm really glad about the results even tho my horse lost, this way the "Terran is OP" hype will fade away a little bit

You could have been your own horse, Fayth! The players and casters were bummed you couldn't make it.

Well, shit happens haha, I'll show up at the next event hopefully, I felt bad enough watching the stream telling myself "boohoo I shud be there =("
That was pretty bad... Also a pretty tough crowd to work with so I don't blame day9

Canada impressed me most :-)
