so your saying you would rather watch a bunch of famous noobs battle than the best players on the server ?

the h/g tournament is, afaik, the only thing with a big prize on the us server so far. 3 of the top 4 were famous sc players, the 4th was world champion on another game, and lzgamer was ro8. ladder is for practice, no one remembers ladder rankings or who wins random prizeless team leagues. they remember tournament winners. the eg guys play custom games all day, of course their ladder rankings arent that high. but you cant claim your players deserve to be invited over them when in the one big individual tournament theres been so far none of your players did better than them. get meaningful results, then you can be indignant. until then shut up.

Not really =/.
But hey, it's their money, so they get to invite who they want.

The issue with all invitational turnies is that invite only leaves out a lot of UNKNOWN talent, just because you dont know who someone is or they are relatively unknown doesnt mean that they wont stomp your face in.

Another issue is that some of the players invited were invited not because they deserve it but because they're friends with the people sending invites! So it's dumb to say that PainUser isn't skilled or known enough when he's more deserving than some of the people that are already invited.

just to clarify, my post wasnt directed just at the painuser comment, but more to the "unknown" comment. If players want to prove they are the best they should have to fight their way to the top. If they are unable to do that then they arent the best, period.

Yeah, but as a sponsor you don't really care about finding unknown talent or even having the best quality of games possible. You just want people to tune in and see your brand name. A huge open entry tournament might be of greater interest to the esports community, but as far as getting a sponsor's name out there, a small invite-only tournament produces the same results with a much smaller investment.

well luckily there are tons of other tournaments that aren't invites. And it's still in beta, there is plenty of time for unknown people to make a name for themselves.

is no one else confused by the sponsor? I mean unless they are going to create a sc2/tl app they have no real connection to the gaming world. At least for the Poker Strategy TSL, poker/sc have had a connection for quite awhile, but some random iphone related site seems quite odd. But oh well, as long as it produces a decent turny with good games thats what matters i guess.

Plenty of Sponsors endorse projects that have no real connection to their product or service. IE Visa/Mastercard endorsing the NFL or Honda endorsing a sitcom on television. The more mainstream Starcraft 2 becomes, the better!

Plus so many people own iphones/ipods/itouch etc. I believe there's already somebody in this thread who has voiced their approval of the product our sponsor represents.

visa/mastercard is used world wide so they have the ability to sponsor anything and it is related.

$2250 and a high-five doesn't buy much TV commercial time, but it does make people tune in for a tournament where your product is advertised as much as you want. They're just trying to cash in on StarCraft 2 like all the terrible fansites sprouting up the last few months.

Yeah but you know what I mean, the tsl2 open ladder was fun, and it still ended up with the top players in the ro16, but everyone in the community could have fun pushing their skills(and abusing :D) to try to get in. My disappointment aside, looking forward to an awesome tournament! Gl to the participants!

Idras point is very true, I am the non-sc player in the final four and it seems hard to get invites despite good results

yes but when I'm like 5-1 or 6-1 against said person and I am no where near the top 100 let alone top 16 globally right now, they shouldn't be in this prestigious of a tournament, and suggesting they should is pretty stupid.

edit: everyone complaining about how invites should be handed out to people nobody has heard or, in reality, cares about, are absolute morons. So what if you're high on the ladder? I guarantee you if anyone on that list that's invited right now played 400 games since the reset they would be in the top 10 of the US server, you're accomplishment really doesn't mean much to anyone until you perform well in tournaments or get your name out there some other way (eg: orb and streaming, if he didn't stream i guarantee you there is no way in hell his name would be on this list, but, because he has people that follow his stream and enjoy watching him -> more viewers for his games -> sponsors happy).

play the gosucoaching tournies, do well, and you're name will get out there and you will start getting invited
