My Intro
+ Show Spoiler +My name is Dustin aka h4rvey, i have been a member of this site for some time now but have yet to do a whole lot to get involved. I have been playing SC1 actively for a few years now and am now addicted to SC2.
TL is the very best gaming community i have ever seen and been a member of, nothing else can really compare to what this site has accomplished.
That being said i would like to finally step up and do something for the community, instead of it just being a thought in the back of my head.
So I would like to start an SC2 Beginner's League, which will run tournaments for people in the Copper to Silver SC2 1v1 League. The tournaments will operate similar to what is done with the HG Tournament and other very popular SC1 tournament layouts.
These tournaments would not just be to see who are the Top players, but more so to help all the players grow and learn how to play better, and meet new players and friends.
I am creating this initial post to see how many people would be interested in this. I have been running these type of tournaments with my local 10-12 friends and would like to bring this to the whole NA TL community.
So to summarize:
Beginner League Tournament Information
- Must be SC2 Silver League or lower
- US Server Only
- Single Elimination
- Bo1 Regular Play
- Bo5 Finals
- Semi Final / Grand Finals casted by DJWHEAT
The amount of interest shown will determine when the first tournament starts and which Round we start at.

+ Show Spoiler +I just wanted to write you to send you a big thank you. Over these past six weeks since I signed up for your little tournament, I have gotten so much better. Back in SC1 I could never even stay D on ICCUP, i would always drop down to D-. I think the reason for that is I never really had anything to work for. This tournament changed that so much, and I've practiced alot. I just want to tell you THANK YOU! This means alot to me.
Please let me know what's happening now, and I would love to be able to help out anyway I can in future GBFL's. If it helps people improve like it did me, they are definitely worth running.

What determines a beginner? Just being placed in copper/bronze/silver in 1v1? I'm a silver 1v1 player for example, but in 3 or 4 platinum 2v2 teams. I've been playing RTS's for years, so I'm not really a beginner, but I'd still be eligible from what I see there.

You bring up a good point that we have spent a bit of time discussing.
It may be better of us to rename the league so as not to confuse anyone.
To enter the tournament the highest SC2 1v1 league you can be in is Silver, it does not matter which 2v2 league you are in.
The main idea of this league will be to help its commentators improve their game, which will mean its more than just "stomping your oponent GG /exit" instead people can give each other tips and idea's on what to do better next time. (of course not everyone would be interested in doing this, but hopefully some will)

once the prizes for this league become bigger i can already imagine all the plats and maybe even pros losing a bunch of games on purpose to enter this... (free money)

I can't participate in this because I have no key as of yet (it's very sad). However, I would be interested in seeing this happen and hopefully continue in the future. I'm not at all a good player; SC2 will be the first RTS that I plan on getting into in a big way. (I have played SC1 and WC3 but hardly ever on battle.net, and never well)
Anyways, I like the idea of a league like this that can hopefully help players like me get into the game and improve.

I don't think this is a good idea-- with no punishment for sandbagging, and no explicit formula for moving up in ranks, there's no way to prove someone is actually "silver" level. Without a prize this isn't really a problem, but considering how easy it is to have an account below your skill level, even $50 will certainly draw some players well above the expected silver skill level.

This is a good point that hasnt gone un-noticed we are working out the details of the prize money so as to prevent that type of thing.

Alot of people have volunteered to cast matches.
So far we are only planing to have the semi and grand finals casted.
We will have replay packs for each Round.

scsz, highest rated silver player in the US
he plays at platinum level, regularly plays high-ranked platinum players, and has beaten many top platinum players, but due to the way the current league system works, he has not yet moved out of silver league.
I suspect you are in a somewhat similar situation.

Just so every one knows, if you are placed in a higher league after the reset it doesn't matter, you are still qualified to play in the tournament. I believe this is the best way to do it because if we booted all the people who might go gold or plat then we would lose a lot of people and it would be a pain to fix it all and replace them.

Not a problem, alot of us have been put into Gold since the Rank reset. We are going to leave everyone as is. The only people we will be replacing are those who got placed in Platinum league.
And after Ro64 are will not be replacing anyone.
We are re-thinking a few things for our next tournament as well.

Well the last reset kinda messed up our tournament. So the next one will start and end alot faster to help avoid that and also avoid people getting bumped to other leagues. The first method is by doing Bo1 up to Ro16.
Can you provide me with a link or information about the next beta reset? i will take that into consideration and may need to reschedule some stuff. If there is another reset on the horizon i would rather hold off until after its done before starting up Tournament #2.

The bracket result should of said 1 - 0, i have fixed that and am waiting for the wiki page to get approved.
The Tournament is Round of 64 broken up into 4 legs of 16 people. That first Round of 64 is best of 1, then it will be Round of 32 which is also best of 1, then it will be Round of 16 which will be best of 3, then Round of 8 which is best of 3, then Semi finals which is best of 3, then Grand finals with is best of 5.

I think I should probably withdraw from the tourney. When I signed up I was Silver rank 40 or so, and had just come off a bad losing streak and didn't think I would climbing anytime soon, but I have climbed up to rank 4 since then, so I am expecting to be in Gold within the next week or two. Sorry to mess up your brackets. Hope you make it to 64!

im confused? u say bronze-platinum but the erm wiki link says silver only? please clarify o.o

i'm pretty sure h4rvey wanted to do silver only tournaments during the beta but then when the real game came out wanted to start including higher level players, so its bronze-plat like the OP says

You are correct, the wiki has been updated.

So when I first got the beta i placed into silver for 1v1 then ranked up to #1gold with about 80-100 games played. Then the reset ranks and I went plat(pre-diamond rank) when I placed but only had about 20 games in plat before they reset again. Next I placed into diamond with about another 20 games played.
My question is this. Does this make me a diamond level player and therefore ineligible for this league? I dont feel like I'm a high or even mid rank diamond player I think I just had some lucky placements. Just curious. Thx for taking the time to read my boring ass post o.O

sadly enough i will not be able to play in these tournaments until august 10th ... if you host a low level tourney like that after that date i am totally down to play in it.
