I remember this helping me immensly in BW and as i couldn't find it for SC2, i thought i'd get off my arse and work it out so i don't get completly demolished by beta players in placement.
Basically i've tried to work out how many drones are required to support one hatches worth of production of any unit. Values used are:
20 larva every 2 mins. This assumes 1 hatch 1 queen with constant injections occuring. If you want to work out how many drones are needed for a hatch without a queen then double and divide by 5 (8 larva per 2 mins).
Drone brings in 0.7 resourses a sec or 84 every 2 mins. Not exact but close enough for practical purposes. Keep in mind income goes down as saturation increases, so if your bases are well saturated you might want to go over what's written here.
OL refers to the number of drones you'll need if your also pumping overloads to supply your units. Done for all the basics, not for the more advanced units though. I may have got this wrong, so to give a example of how i calcuated the roach:
(20x75) \84 = min drones. (20x25) \84 = gas drones. ((((4x75)+100)\5)x20) \84 = OL min rate (((4x25)\5)x20)\84 = OL gas rate
OK, figures (more exact in brackets) :
Zergling / Drone
12 mineral drones (11.9, OL rate 13.4)
Roach
18 mineral drones (17.9, OL rate 19) 6 gas drones (5.95, OL rate 4.76)
Hydralisk / Baneling
24 mineral drones (23.8 OL rate same) 12 gas drones (11.9, OL rate 9.5)
Mutalisk
24 mineral drones (23.8 OL rate same) 24 gas drones (23.8, 19 OL rate)
Infestor
24 mineral drones 36 gas drones
Corrupter
36 mineral drones 24 gas drones
Ultra
71 mineral drones 48 gas drones
Brood Lord
71 mineral drones 60 gas drones
Obviously your rarely going to be pumping a hatches worth of infestors but you can play around with the numbers a bit to get them a bit more useful. Eg. 1 base 1/2 ling 1/2 bane would be 18 mineral drones and 6 gas drones (12+24 /2) & (12+0/2).
Hope some people find this useful.

this is quite helpful. my friend and i were talking about needing this kind of info the other day.
edit: shouldn't the OL rate be a little different? you have this:
((((9x75)+200) / 11) x20) \84 = OL min rate but for roaches which take 2 supply, meaning you need 1 OL per 4 roaches, wouldn't it be this?
(4x75 + 100) / 5 = average cost per larva so overall formula: (4x75 + 100) / 5 x 20 / 84 = min number of drones for roaches + OL

Assuming your math is right (which I will, because I'm angry at math right now [long story]) then this is pretty damn cool.
The gas numbers are interesting, WE REQUIRE MORE VESPENE GAS

Just realised overlords give 8 supply now instead of 9. Oops. Thanks for the correction, will update.
Wait actually they were 8 in brood war aswell. I'm just adding hatches for no reason .

The files in the older thread are either gone or corrupted somehow. Besides, it's always nice to have an updated version. I would really appreciate seeing something like this stickied so that it's easy to find and update for the community.
I would suggest throwing the whole formula into a spreadsheet so that others can work with it. Thanks so much for the data

What about using a queen to inject larva? How would you calculate that in? (Or is it already calculated)
|
tl;dr - the formula is
6 Drones / 25 (resource)
i.e. Roaches cost 75 mins | 25 gas, so they require 18 min Drones | 6 gas Drones.
Thanks for the calculations, this kind of stuff is always interesting.

Isnt the larvae spawning rate 1 larvae / 20sec?
Just a hatch gives you 3 larvae / min. That is 6 / 2min.
A queen can add 4 more larvae every 40sec. Thats 12 more on 2minuties.
For a total of 18 larvae / 2min.

1 larva every 15 secs.
Yeah 6 drones for every 25 resource is pretty much right.
Inject larva already factored in.
I'd imagine the spreadsheet is more useful than mine. I don't have anything to read it with though and just thought i'd share what i'd done

afaik the most efficient way to mine any type of resource is to use 2 workers per patch(or gayser), this way ever worker will bring 0.75 of resource per second, summing up to 1.5 of resource per second from patch, however, if u fully saturate a patch having 3 workers mining from it, number drops to 0.65 of resource per second due to slight delay between worker switches(actually every worker in this situation waits a bit for previous to finish mining), summing up to 2 of resource per second from patch. 1 worker per patch still brings 0.75 of resource per second.
dont know where have u got 0.7 number from, but its wrong, actual number depends of saturation of patch - whether its 2 workers, 3 workers or even more (in last case u still get 2 of resource per second because ur patches are oversaturated)
