I have to admit, I have never researched this spell in over 200 games as Protoss.
Has anyone used it? Is it any good?
One strategy I thought of was using them to create phantom colossi against terran which would make it alot harder for your opponent to destroy your colossi.
Or in PvZ, mass sentries with then create a bunch of zealots with hallucinate to tank for the sentries.
Theres also the possibility of "faking" tech. Like hallucinate some void rays to make your opponent panic. I don't know how well it would work though, since as soon as the void ray attacks they will probably notice they are fake.
It could be interesting if you used it to distract your enemy. For e.g attack their main with some hallucinated void rays, then when they go back to their base you attack their expansion.
This is all just theory craft however, I've never had the balls to research this spell in a real game.
If anyone has any replays with good use of hallucinate, please post them!

i would think it's a great spell to use on colossi.
I havent really seen it anywhere.

It would be pretty funny if you used it to make your army look huge! then don't show him any of your sentries when you attack so he doesn't realize as easily that they're hallucinations. Then, with a little psychological attack like "GG NOOB" or "YOU HAZ NO CHANCE", he might leave the game before he realizes they're fakes xD

Hallucinate is pretty awesome. So much more practical than in SC1.

I saw a replay (or stream) of -orb- using using it. His terran opponent saw two Collusi and went mass viking to counter it. Leaving very few units left to counter -orb-'s real army. He has also used to create Pheonixes for scouting when he has not had time to create a Robotics Facility yet.
So I think it can be used with great success. Especially if you get it early, so you can fake a tech rush.

Just to clarify cause I think you're thinking it works like the SC1 version: you don't cast hallucination on a unit. You cast the spell and you get to select what kind of unit you want to have a hallucination of. You could hallucinate up a colossus without having robo tech. I've only seen other people use it on streams too, but I dread the day when a protoss plays hallucination mindgames with me...

I saw a guy once using them in a random 2on2. The enemies where Terran and Protoss and he got mass zealots and sentries. So he hallucinated 2 collosuss and in the first run, they seem to think, one must be real and focused the colluses which completed left an open front for the mass zeals to get rid of the marauders. Later in the game he used it to hide his two "real" collossi in a bunch of like 7 of them.
It was kinda Bhaal in Diablo - who the heck is it? Snap, this one was fake! ^^
I think it's an alternative to the standard play. My two actual tests in 1vs1 failed badly (I teched it to fake my tech once and second I used them to fool a zerg with my zeals) but with a little practice and an affordable BO it might be really useful - see the collossie example in the mid to late game!

seriously, making phoenixes to scout, or fake colossi or immortals can me so nice. Faking like 2 Immortals for a timing push vs zerg, but then having almost only zealots and sentries, would own e.g. Same goes for faking colossi, or just doubling your army size with some extra hits to take in it. Its also good if you really have colossi to make it alot harder for infestors e.g. to know which one to mindcontrol
|
btw. with detectors like observer or overseer u are able to see which colossi are real and which are fake...
so making fake colossi to hide ur real ones will only work until people get used to it and will use scan and stuff on it...
still its great for scouting or making mass zeats blocking for u

should be pretty amusing to hallu some hts and send them towards the terran bio blob, how does he respond? maybe emp it quick as hell to not die!
i dont think hallu will be good in sc2 either unless u can hallu the mothership(?)

That sucks, it shouldn't be like that. There is no point then.

The 4 probe hallucination is great for scouting expansions. That and the colossus for already stated reasons are the most useful imo.

I think it's an awesome spell and I should start using it, I got absolutely mindfucked in one PvP where my opponent used it vs me, randomly creating Colossi out of thin air when he didn't even have the tech for it (I know, I scouted it and I saw him creating it so I knew what was up). Even if you know that it's not real, it forces you pay even more attention to what your army's shooting at, essentially forcing more micro.
And if you successfully bait your opponent into making a wrong army composition you won already.

i use it to scout when I am committed to templar tech and planning on getting a late robo (aka no obs). Hallu phoenix is a great scout =D

I've experimented with it for a couple of ideas:
1) Immortal Shields: Hallued Immortals still retain their hardened shields, meaning against the big guns they only take 20 damage...so even a hallued immortal can last a while. My experience has been mixed so far, many times I would rather have 2 forcefields.
2) Phoenix vs Muta: A common toss build order is to start with zeal/sentry as a general defense against ling/roach and then tech to phoenix to counter muta. We all know that while phoenix can take on muta in rough equal numbers, it can be hard when zerg is powering them. A few halloed phoenix can give your air army those precious few seconds to whittle down the muta. And if nothing else, the halu can take some of the splash damage....just like zerg used overlords with their muta in SCI vs enemy muta. So far I've had decent success with this, the careful thing is to balance the initial gas cost of the hallu. I don't want to be researching hallu and not getting more phoenix.
3) Hallued Collossus: If hallu can save even one collossus its worth its weight in gold.

Hallucinate caused me to misread a Protoss's tech once, so I panicked and pushed. And won. A guy hallucinated a phoenix and so I assumed he was rushing some stargate tech I'd have no counter for. It turned out he was trying to get templar tech and had a late robo.

Hallucinate phoenix, and attack it to charge up void ray beams. Without giving away your position.
|
YES, hallucination is very useful. In sc2, all strategy is based upon building units to counter the enemy's units. Making a hallucinated colossi can turn the tide of the battle.
|
I can see mixing fake/real Collosus. I don't see a 100% fake working against good players.

I've been thinkin about messin around with this.. I'll try it out and post a replay sometime tonight
