A remake of the old Brood War map Katrina. Part of the iCCup Anniversery map pack, the map remains mostly the same as its previous incarnation, with some changes in order to make it suitable for Starcraft 2.
In the remake, the mains were resized significantly. In Brood War, the large mains were unusual, but not particularly bad. With the design of the map, it was necessary to compensate for the clunky unit pathing. In Starcraft 2 however, the size would detract from the gameplay significantly, so we decreased the size to compensate
Also, we moved the mains further from the rest of the map. In Brood War, the side cliffs of the main bases were right up against the lowground. However with positional and racial balance in mind, we moved them away to solve various issues in TvZ and mirror matchups
We added a destructible rock to the main ramp so its wallable with a standard set of buildings.
+ Show Spoiler [Side View] + Many thanks to monitor for doing the hours of deco work on this map, as well as gameplay suggestions. I couldn't have made the map nearly as good without him. Also thanks to the rest of the team for helping me out along the way as well as steelseries, our amazing sponsor for its support.
You can find the map on Bnet as iCCup Katrina AE Official

Finally, I can go carriers on this map like a true protoss, and all will be right in the world.
This pretty much made my day right here.....loved this map sooooo much back in BW.

Great looking map. Can't wait to play on it and I hope we all see it in upcoming ICCup events!

Amazing rendition of Katrina.

Cool conversion^^
Not really one of my favourite bw maps though
|
awesome !!!!
we really need those kind of maps in SC2 to make it even more fun to watch and play !

This map is soooooo seexy! Hopefully this map will be used in as many cups as possible.

any detail shots or just overview?

I like the map overall.
The water behind the thirds really bugs me, though. The way the cliff sinks down, it creates really weird angular edges on the water as it flows up and down. Doesn't look very aesthetically appealing in-game.
+ Show Spoiler +Screenshot doesn't really do it justice, it looks worse when animated. ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/8Bx8n.jpg) Other than that, a solid remake.

So I don't know the history of the original BW map, but does the name "Katrina" have anything to do with the hurricane named Katrina that his New Orleans, LA in 2005? The shape of the overall map kind of looks like a hurricane, and the mains kind of look like they are protected by levies. Am I crazy?

Yeah just saw this ingame. Very ugly, either you didn't smooth it correctly or it's just the fact that the water moves super fast^^

Edit: Found the problem on very high graphic settings the problem occurs. Edit2: Specifically If terrain is on High or above. Seeing what can be done to fix it now. Going to try to change speed of the water. Edit3: Found the fix, expect an updated one within 30 minutes. Edit4: By 30 minutes I mean "soon".

No. It's just what it was named in BW in 2007, and Korean pro mapmakers named it so I HIGHLY doubt it.

Holy snap this map looks so sick! It almost looks like it'll play like a super badass version of crossfire with 4 spawns! The aesthetics are also top-notch, only rivaled IMO by Bel' Shir Beach, Testbug, and MAYBE Ithaca (2/3 iccup... What a beastly team of mappers!) SOO hyped to play on this map with some friends! Great job on the sponsor, Keep it up always, I, at least really love everything you guys do (also try to get this on the Korean Weekly if possible)! ICCUP HWAITINGGGG

Played this today and on the top of the map you didn't continue with the trees all the way, looks a bit strange:
+ Show Spoiler +
edit: Btw I enjoyed the matches in the Nationvoice Weekly a lot! Most interesting 4 player rotational map imo.

Nice, I'll fix it now. Thanks for the input.

and for the carriers... well... starcraft 2 will finally have an excuse to mass carriers on this map xD
and to the person who said "i wonder why..." to my comment about loving this map, its because i love the look of it. not cause flash has like an unbeatable record on the map.

feels like it's something like 25-50% too small, imo. Too cramped in places

This map will produce some of the most interesting games in SCII. It has a larger stress on air control, which I like a lot! None of the other competitive SCII maps do. There's no choke between the natural and main, which pretty much forces players to fast expand, but the rocks there allow early aggression as well, making a nice balance between offense and defense which I haven't seen used on any SCII map except maybe Crevasse, but then again that map is more focused on ground macro, but Katrina's choke points outside of the main and nat make maneuvering and getting good army positioning tricky.
I'm really excited and am hoping to be able to watch some pro games on this spectacular map, great work iCCup!

TvZ on this map was extremely hard. Can't really put any real pressure on. Zerg can drone freely until he sees that you move out. He will have enough time to produce units by the time you arrive at his base. As it moves on to 4 base zerg the mutas are just too much to deal with. I suppose this map requires a switch in gameplay from all races except zerg.
It's beautiful though.

I disagree. Zerg has a much harder time against Terran. They have a lot of area to cover with both their main and natural and blue flame hellion drops will be extremely hard to defend against, not to mention that Terran can go for a fast command center after barracks.
We've actaully come to a consensus that Zerg is by far the worst race on this map. Of course, this isn't a good thing but as it is a concept problem, there isn't too much we can do to fix it.

Have to agree, unfortunately the map favors Terran by a very large margin. See the games in the iCCup/Nationvoice Korean weekly in particular, because Zerg stood no chance vs. a Terran with tanks. We now know a lot that doesn't work in competitive maps- a very helpful piece of knowledge for us to learn.

That's unfortunate since this is my favorite map atm

Isn't it a bit early to make such a finite statement or have you guys got way more data than just the korean weeklies and inhouse testing? I really like the potential of the map so I'd hate to see it get this stigma before it's really figured out.

I'm adamant that the Koreans did name it after Hurricane Katrina, I recall people noting the spiralling "hurricane image-on-the-weather report" design and, as you may note, 2007 does come after 2005. I'm puzzled as to why you seem so sure it's not the case. Wasn't it quite a devastating event? *Checks WIkipedia*
Wikipedia wrote: Hurricane Katrina of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season was the costliest natural disaster, as well as one of the five deadliest hurricanes, in the history of the United States Yes, so not only would Korean news possibly cover international events as most countries do, but it was actually a major event too. I honestly rarely watch the news, but I remember it being covered to some degree on Australian news and so when this map came out, I was afraid that some more sensitive U.S. Americans might be upset about the a map being released in the shape of a devastating natural disaster (which, at the time, I was incorrectly thinking was even close in time than two years). Love the map, except that I play zerg :S; great to see it back. I was wondering if iCCup would get around to it! :D
Oh and Numy, I can't say on his behalf, but I expect he is judging based on how it was in Brood War, the map was used for a reasonable amount of time, so the map's balance/balance issues were discovered in the time. From what I recall, Protoss generally did well vs terran there while zerg struggled before SEKatrina was released. The mineral patch reduction from 10 to 7 (that looks right, anyway) and some other minor changes (slight terrain shifting somewhere?) helped to reduce the difference in benefit that terran and protoss gained from having so many extra minerals in the safe expansion behind the main. I'm pretty sure Stork and Bisu were "tearing' it up" here and it was used for one final (WCG or MSL, or so I thought, but I don't see the result on TL) between Stork and Bisu. In another, Stork lost a finals series to Flash and I believe this was used as one of the maps. Well, Brood War works rather differently from Brood War. We got input from Korean mapmakers and we're just pro like that.
