Thought it was boring, unintuitive, and definitely way too long. It's almost impossible to get a full game from the few times I tried. Someone always ragequits because they can't control their hero or they didn't get to play the hero.

If you're into that kind though, more power to you.

I have played them a little now, but they were far superior in WC3. The game mechanics just fit better.

Man, the LotR maps got mad popular when the LotR movies were still new lol. I remember playing them more than regular SC because of how fun it was at the time. It definitely takes a LONG time to finish a game, especially when there are good players in the game. It is common to have 1 or 2 leavers in the middle of the game since it is time consuming ( ~ 1.5 hours sometimes or more).

I always loved helms deep, but any of the longer ones I found that people just leave after 2 minutes of not knowing what is going on

I remember playing soooooo many LoTR games on SC1. I even got into a clan that pretty much played all those games. WotR is my favorite, I remember so many early game rushes I used to do to kill certain buildings.

Amazing games if you have good players. I need to play more

I used to play these Helms Deeps custom games in SC1 yeh. The one I liked most was the big WC3 map which basically included all of Middle Earth and had the 2 sides battling against eachother. Playing as Isengard was awesome cause you'd be surrounded by the "good" side completely from the start :D

Ooh man, that's a blast from the past. Actually almost all of my BW time for some 3-4 years was devoted to playing LotR UMS games and clan politics, lol. Loved Pre-LotR as it was a classic and really invented the whole opping concept that stuck around with every map design afterwards, although the complete lack of it was pretty much why I disliked LotR maps so much in Wc3 even if it was closer to home universe-wise.

I made quite a few maps back then that never really took off in popularity, but out of an old mapmaker's curiosity are any of the new ones good? Haven't really tried them in Sc2 since I don't have as much time to play anymore, but it would be great if it took off again :D

I used to basically only play lotr type maps (the ones where you would op spawn buildings with heroes and stuff, not helms deep or the terrible, terrible ones like SoG). WoT WoP was my favorite of the genre, partially because I helped Maldais create it and later fixed a few problems to make the fixed/final version, and made the initial random heroes variant that became oh so popular later on. Pre-LotR was ridiculous in BW, loved that map. Still, I always thought that the better maps were either the first age ones, as they had more options for teams and weren't always based on trying to gangrape WK while gondor stalled, or the ones with the same playstyle but made up nations, because they were usually much better balanced/not based completely on your gondor/mordor.

I know this is some kind of nostalgia thread ... but could someone explain the basic mechanics for those who didn't play the UMS in BW?

I tried some Helms Deep map that was vs AI and you defended long walls against storming enemies. You controlled a lot of soldiers other than your hero. All the regular soldiers you controlled were similar, one or two types with either melee or ranged weapon. Your hero had slow energy regen and there were no powerups that I saw. . There was one position on the map where you could heal the hero (the spawn point). You could use one of your 3 abilities like every 5 minutes. The regular ability that you could use was a ranged AoE damage one, at least for the hero I choose, which didn't improve combat experience much.

The camera was buggy and turned 180 degress in oposition to the minimap - you could say the minimap was inverted, which was comfusing and made it that much more diffficult to switch between your army and hero,

The walls of the keep were narrow and combat felt very clumsy and was a bit like throwing 100 zealots without charge at 100 hydras with more HP on a narrow cliff - quite uninterresting.

The only good I have to say about that map is
1. Nice fantasyish theme that actually felt a bit wc3ish rather than sc2ish although I dont think there were any custom models used.
2. If the players survived the first battle, in 10 minutes or so, the game would go on to another area of the keep where the level looked and felt different .. a little variation to the booring keep walls area.

I fail to see how this concept could be so popular. I hope you are talking about some other mod with pvp gameplay?
