The games were not the prettiest, nor the most well-played. Even so, MvP.DongRaeGu and MvP.Genius never failed to entertain as they took the GSL finals to six games, where DongRaeGu clinched the title by a score of 4 - 2. It would be DongRaeGu's first GSL championship in his career, coming almost three months after a painful game seven defeat in the Blizzard Cup finals.
The two players seemed to be in good spirits throughout the series, and DongRaeGu imitated some of Genius' celebration from the regular season by charging into his opponent's booth for some gloating. After winning the final game, DongRaeGu presented Genius with pieces of military apparel, jokingly suggesting Genius should consider fulfilling his mandatory military service.
The gathered live audience seemed to be one of the biggest ever for an in-Korea GSL event, and their loud cheers dotted the night's broadcast. However, it was groans that came from the mouths of many international fans watching from home, as the GomTV website toppled under the stress of the throng of viewers tuning in for the finals, making the stream inaccessible for most of game one. The problem was mostly resolved while GomTV played a long video package between game one and game two, but it was a sour point during an an otherwise successful event from GomTV.
Game One – Daybreak
Genius opened with a macro friendly strategy on a macro friendly map, going for a quick third base off just a stargate and four gateways. DongRaeGu had much success with heavy aggression against fast three base Protosses at the recent MLG Winter Arena, and looked to go on the offensive once more.
However, Genius played a great defensive game with his limited troops, keeping both his natural and third base safe and securing a strong economy. Genius then showed the patient, deliberate play that had been his hallmark throughout the tournament, and attacked once he had a death-ball DongRaeGu could not challenge. DongRaeGu attempted a backdoor attack to buy time, but Genius sniffed it out and thwarted it easily before moving on.
That left DongRaeGue stuck with just roaches and infestors as Genius advanced with colossi and blink-stalkers, and Genius cut a bloody path through the Zerg troops and expansions, collecting the GG.
Game Two – Antiga Shipyard
Genius brought a well prepared cheese in game two, going for a forge FE into a hidden, double proxy-stargate build. He waited for three void rays and three phoenixes to attack, and walked into a spore and two queens defending DongRaeGu's third base. Though it seemed like a completely winnable battle, Genius became skittish at that second, and backed off to look for a different location to hit.
It was a moment of fatal indecision, as it allowed DongRaeGu to complete even more spore crawlers and queens, rendering the attack useless. There was only one possible ending after Genius' failed attack left him with a weak army against DongRaeGu's powerhouse three-base economy. DongRaeGu sent waves of troops to finish Genius off, not wasting any time to move onto game three.
Game Three – ESV Cloud Kingdom
Unfazed by his failed cheese in game two, Genius reached into his bag of tricks for yet another. This time it was a low-sentry blink stalker all-in with +1 attack, and it turned out to be just the right thing against DongRaeGu's fast three base defended with primarily speedlings. Even though Genius didn't have force fields to use against the melee attackers, it only took an additional round of zealot warp-ins to remedy the speedling situation and crush through DongRaeGu's defenses.
Game Four – Entombed Valley
For the third straight game, Genius decided to throw a curveball DRG's way. After opening with two stargates after a fast expansion, he went for a fleet beacon and carriers. This turned out to be tantamount to suicide, as it left him almost nothing to defend against against the hydralisk and roach drops that came. The drops crippled Genius' economy, and allowed DongRaeGu to easily take his fourth base while switching to a corruptor-zerglings composition. Corruptors cut through the carriers with tremendous ease, and sealed the game for DongRaeGu.
Game Five – Metropolis
The fifth game ended up resembling the first, with both DongRaeGu and Genius getting three quick bases. Once more, DongRaeGu decided to try for an attack before Genius' economy kicked in, bringing queens, roaches, and zerglings on the warpath. At first, it looked like Genius would hold the fort without any trouble, but a few micro mistakes caused him to lose more troops than necessary on defense. More crucially, he was unable to keep a gap plugged at his natural while his third base was being attacked, allowing speedlings to pour in and tear down his main nexus.
Despite the loss of a Nexus, the situation ended up looking alright for Genius, as he had killed off a significant portion of DongRaeGu's army, leaving the two players at similar supply. Genius simply retook his main and decided to wait and play a longer game. In the meanwhile, DongRaeGu began to secure more bases while going for mutalisks, the key to his backdoor tactics to come.
As DongRaeGu poked at Genius' defenses, he managed to draw enough of the Protoss forces away from the third base for a force of roaches to focus-fire the nexus down. DongRaeGu lost a significant amount of roaches in the process, and it opened a window for a deadly counter-attack from Genius. DongRaeGu knew the only response was to go for a base trade, and sent his mutalisks and speedlings on their way.
With his powerful army, Genius seemed like he had a chance to win the base race. However, he was indecisive and ended up dawdling, with his army walking back and forth without a purpose. Each second bought DongRaeGu more time to collect resources and build more troops, while he destroyed Genius' income and infrastructure at the same time. Genius went for the all-out base trade eventually, but he had waited too long. By the time he destroyed DongRaeGu's main and natural his own income was entirely gone while DongRaeGu had two more mining bases elsewhere. Once DongRaeGu had enough mutalisks to fight Genius' main stalker force head on, the game was over.
Game Six – Crossfire
On the most cheese friendly map of the night, both players opted to play normally yet again. Genius patiently built a large force of colossi and stalkers from his two bases, while DongRaeGu went for roaches, hydralisks, and infestors on his end. There were large periods where the game was just a stand-off, but the situation rapidly broke down once Genius decided to start attacking.
DongRaeGu attempted to backdoor with a handful of his forces, and there was a great deal of indecision on Genius' side once more. Eventually he was able to bring his forces to bear on both DongRaeGu's splinter army and main force, and crush both with well positioned stalkers and good use of force fields.
With his ground army crushed, DongRaeGu immediately switched his plan to harassment and backstabbing at all costs, and put down an obscene amount of spine crawlers at his natural while he switched to mutalisks. He was forced to sacrifice his third base, however, and this put the two players in a strange two base vs two base situation. Inexplicably, a single burrowed zergling blocking his third base seemed to convince Genius that he had to finish the game at this two base vs two base phase, and he continued to mass more and more stalkers. On the other hand, DongRaeGu looked desperately for ways to secure his own third, using his mutalisks to harass while trying to sneak in the extra base.
There was a great deal of posturing, troop movement, and hastily initiated and quickly abandoned attacks on both sides, but eventually DongRaeGu managed to find a window to complete a hatchery at his third base, slowly crawl some spine crawlers over, and secure mining at that location. As for Genius, his natural mined out, and he was forced to go all-in with the stalkers he had remaining. The attack did much damage and thinned DongRaeGu's mutalisk flock considerably, but anything but a complete annihilation of the Zerg army meant a loss for the penniless Genius. After losing his force, he conceded defeat.
With the series won, DongRaeGu thanked his teammates, his family, and a hitherto unheard of girlfriend, which enticed some "Ooh"s from the crowd. Despite his earlier cheeriness, Genius seemed to be more somber in defeat, admitting the difficulty of reaching a final again. DongRaeGu didn't forget to include his customary Zerg pessimism during his interview, mentioning the hardships that had to be overcome as a Zerg player. With the ceremonies over, and an oversize check for 50,000,000 won received, DongRaeGu fulfilled his final obligation and gave his fans what they had waited on for a very long time: a shot of him kissing the GSL championship trophy.
The crowd did seem distressed by the girlfriend comment, along with the rest of DRG's antics. Even Genius was laughing at the military clothes though, that was too funny.
That finals had to be one of the best yet (Probably because there was no Terran involved lol). So glad for DRG, although I actually rooted for Genius. The GSL is only becoming better and better as time moves on.
Congrats to DRG! So glad to see him win, he really deserved it. That said, sad to see Genius lose because he's played a ridiculously good tournament. Both of them played really well. Awesome series. <3

If you go to the bottom of the main page you can click "hide spoilers" and it won't get spoiled for you.

Are you trolling, or what? Because of course if should be on the front page, even in your face if possible. It was the finals, an epic event none would want to miss. And it is headline news in the eSports wordl, per se. So yes, it can be on the front page for it is one of the biggest highlights at the moment.

My god it was painful 3 months ago when DRG lost that game 7 at the Blizzard Cup. I died inside for several days. It's so cathartic to have him finally win. I feel...lighter somehow...I'm finally free....
Congrats to DRG, have been somewhat of a critic but he's finally got the job done. Congrats to Genius as well, going carriers on the biggest stage of all shows his true baller status and he'll always have a place in our hearts
Not the best GSL finals, but well entertaining. Although I hoped DRG to win, i bet on Genius because he showed very smart strategies on his way to the finals. Even after loosing game 4 with carriers, i thought Genius will win with his better planned tactics for each map. I dunno what happend, but after the booth invasion from DRG, he was really shaky in his decision making in Game 5, micro mistakes, did not attack in time during the base race etc... I guess the self doubt crawled in the back of his head after the failed carrier attempted, thinking "what an silly idea..."
On a side note, i think it's not the best sportsmanship to enter your opponents booth during a final series. But well, their friends from the same team and Genius already started with this BM after his 2:0 victory in RO32. Hoping that Gom will fix this, although it's entertaining for the viewer ^^
Congratz for my champion of the hearts - DRG! For showing amazing games this season and being the zerg's last hope after NesTea and Curious went down. For the swarm!

man just stop. everyone is so sick of people whining on this site about spoilers it's completely out of hand. Just shut up and don't come to the site before you watch the games it's as simple as that doesn't take a nuclear physisist to understand the concept
Such a good finals, thanks for the write up. Sure not the best ever, and some people think any finals with mistakes makes for a bad finals (in which case I don't think we've seen a faultless final performance by two players yet...though Jjakji v Leenock was close).
You forgot to mention DRG's almost critical mistake in Game 5 of his queens being so far behind his roach army, however Genius's mistake was more critical.
Congratz to both DRG and Genius for putting on a show worthy of the absolute best players in the world. Past GSLs and been flops for the most part but this was truly a series for the ages. In the ned solid decision making won out and DRG finally earned his plays as a titan on the world of SC2.
Props to the write-up but there is one thing I have to say was neglected and it's how tight game 4 actually was. The explanation makes it sound like genius simply went carriers and lost when in fact that game came down not to the choice in carrier production, but in DRGs response to the heavy cannon/sentry block at Genius's ramp. No zerg player anticipates carriers off a double stargate phoenix/voidray opening but DRG, having absolutely no information to go on made a choice to research the overlord drops to bypass the defensive emplacement. Without that crucial piece of the puzzle Genius holds his ramp to the roach/hydra timing, the carriers are never exposed, and when they finally move out DRG has no answer to the death ball approaching him. To trivialize how close that match actually was is kind of sad when literally one tech choice let DRG roll over genius and take the game.
When DRG initially scouted the ramp only 2 sentries were exposed making it seem like a more traditional warp gate tech switch. Genius hid a build that would have killed 100% of players who scouted and reacted normally. Even the mass of cannon emplacements wasn't initially scouted. Give credit to DRGs clever way to apply pressure which had it been a normal multi gate behind it, would have instantly lost him the game, or at best evened out on both army and economy.
Great job to gom.tv and everyone involved for one hell of a great series. Here's hoping this is the first of many more to come and with luck, a protoss champion next season!
People who come to starcraft news sites not expecting to find any spoilers are just stupid beyond belief. Stop being naive and stupid. Or continue to do so and let us laugh at your stupidity.

Honestly I'm annoyed about it too. I woke up at about 6am my time and went into TL to check whether the event was still running to see if I could catch the tail end, but instead I got spoiled immediately. The results shouldn't be posted in your face at the top of the page IMMEDIATELY after the event. Not everyone lives in a time zone where it is convenient or possible to watch the event live.
TL has always had a no spoiler (within a reasonable time) policy, so I'm confused as to why they suddenly decided to change -- getting spoiled was never a problem before as long as you didn't look at threads on the sidebars or click anywhere that would lead you to results. A warning that the unwritten policy would be changing would have been nice.

Guys, really now. Do you sleep through the Super Bowl (world cup, whatever other sports finals you care about), then log on to a sports news hub and bitch when they have spoilers on their front page? Because that's exactly what's happening here - you didn't watch the finals of a MAJOR esports tournament, came to the #1 news source about esports, and you're complaining that they covered it.
If you don't want the results spoiled, watch the games before you come to the news hub that makes its money by covering these things. Or turn on the hide spoilers option mentioned earlier in this thread. Either way, complaining about it is just complaining about your own poor decisions.

Hey Mr. Hockey, teamliquid is a leader in hiding results so the fans can't get spoiled. There are mostly 300k people visiting everyday, you think that 300k people will force themselves to not look at front page? Oh wait, just navigate with a bandana?
It's probably a mistake from them, maybe some ppl were so glad about DRG wins, but spoils gotta get hide.

Spoiler Policy: We're removing our spoiler policy for StarCraft 2 news. That means news threads and forum threads can now have spoilers in the title and spoilers in the comments, though posters will still have to stay on topic (i.e. don't post about GSL in an NASL thread). Brood War news and forums will remain on the old spoiler policy.
We've always envisioned our site as a place where we can have live, up to date news. We want fans to come to our site and see a player holding a trophy with an appropriate headline. This is the future of coverage and where we've always wanted to be as a coverage site. We began as a site during a time with no live streams and everyone read news to see who won last night. Even as technology advanced, the time zone difference made it impractical to watch live for all but the most dedicated fans. But with the SC2 boom, there are plenty of NA and EU events in appropriate time zones. Although many fans still use VODs, live viewing is now the norm. Professional StarCraft 2 resembles live, mainstream sports for most of its fans, and we believe it's finally time to provide fast, up to date coverage on events as they unfold.
congratz to DRG so happy he won especially after blizzard cup and MLG.. Now he can go celebrate watch the iem and go back to it. Genius.. Carriers on GSL Finals.. talk about unpredictable. Great series. Even better GSL Series. Best of luck Genius and gratz DRG
For everyone bitching about spoilers, for future reference, there's a check box on the bottom left corner of the front page that says "Hide Spoilers." Guess what it does! This feature was introduced last week with the changes to the front page, and had any of you read the article about those changes, you would have known about it, and the relaxed spoiler policy.
On another note, congrats to DRG on his first GSL championship!

Not everyone comes to TL as merely a "Starcraft news site". A lot of people come to it for streams, for the community aspect, for information (liquipedia, TLPD) or as a calendar for future events.
I'm disappointed that the news item about a change to the front page format and spoiler policy wasn't itself a "Featured News" item.

wtf, some random thread in the TL community forum a week ago? CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED THAT.
I guess those of us who haven't had a problem with this for years just learned the hard way. Won't make the same mistake again.

I disagree with having live updates getting up for the GSL (esp. the finals) right after they happen and with spoilers in the front page article/title. There's a reason why I PAID for the access to watch the VODs after the event has already happened. It's because they're airing in a time zone where I can't possibly catch them awake.
If there was a sports event that I missed, I sure as hell wouldn't pay to go back and find the video and watch it again. I could also catch it live if I wanted to as it happened since it's airing in the same time zone as myself...
Up to date coverage for MLG, IEM, IPL or any other events like that I have no problem with at all and I don't think many other people have ever voiced concerns about them... being that if you wanted to you could watch them as they're airing. I just think an exception should be made for important matches in the GSL, which should be spoiler'ed by default.
TLDR: This is pretty much a big FU to everyone who actually subscribes to GSL for the VODs.

I just think an exception should be made for important matches in the GSL, which should be spoiler'ed by default.
TLDR: This is pretty much a big FU to everyone who actually subscribes to GSL for the VODs.
Not everyone lives in America, not like I mind MLG or IPL being spoiled cause I cant watch it till the day after - go to the VoD's before TeamLiquid then. It's not that hard.
So you can't catch MLG or IPL live. Did you pay for access to watch them? I know I wouldn't.
I think you missed my point. If I wasn't a GSL subscriber (for the VODs) I wouldn't have minded the spoilers either.
Also, I usually check TL for a hype thread/match preview BEFORE watching the VODs because it increases the quality of my viewing experience. Or sometimes a (spoiler'd) recap thread after so that I can decide which VODs I want to watch and which ones I don't if it's early group stages.
Wow fuck dis shit, big fucking spoiler on the mainpage like IN YOUR FACE... sigh. I only just got back and I wanted to check TL before Gomtv... because you hardly ever spoil but wtf is this shit On the mainpage even.
Holy shit so much QQ in this thread it doesn't even make sense. I just think about the sports site I visit, the first thing I want to see after the soccer team I cheer for win is that big "VICTORIOUS" piece of news in the site, give the guys who actually saw the games a break guys, the whole spoiler thing shouldn't even exist, if you really wanted to not know shit about the games just don't visit TL until you saw the games.

Hey Mr. Hockey...
Super Bowl is football, World Cup is soccer. Not sure why you jumped to calling me Mr. Hockey, nor why you can't grasp the simple concept of not looking at the frontpage of an esports news site when you don't want to see esports news. Oh well.

Finally, we've all been watching him SMASH all kinds of code S koreans in different leagues and losing that horrific game7 a few months ago... he sooo deserves this!!! our new zerg champion!
I see some people complaining about spoilers.. I came here to do the exact opposite.
Thank you for changing your spoiler policy TL, I don't watch much SC2 anymore but I like to keep up with recent results. Previously I had to use the recent tournament results page on Liquipedia but this coverage is way better and more convenient.

I cant wait until the VODs are uploaded. I thought for sure Genius would win it his PvZ is pretty sick and considering he already beat DRG in group play and how he handled Nestea I didnt think DRG could do it but as a zerg player myself im glad to see DRG take the win!
Im sorry, but TL didnt used to have the biggest spoilers front page hours after matches. Do i have to turn some feature off? Or is TL just unsafe grounds now if you cant watch the matches live? Ive been here since Giyom and Elkyx days, and its the first time its happened to me and Im quite sad because I had planned a GSL watching party.
Wow wtf I just had the finals ruined for me now. I have never heard of this spoiler option, why would you not have spoilers off by default? This was one of my most hyped finals
It's VERY frustrating to have planned on watching the finals later today, go on TL to find a local LAN info I'm going to (so I didn't have a choice but to go on to the site), just to see the winner AND score right on the front page. COMPLETELY disappointing as I have watched the entire season so far without spoilers.
People haven't noticed the lack of spoilers for a while? I was like, huh, that's interesting, and read up on why they did it, and then found the hide spoilers button in case I wanted to use it. I guess the first day they implemented it was a surprise, and I guess some people could have been very unlucky and not visited TL for a while and finally visit it for the first time after the GSL, but I suspect that would be a minority...
SPOILER ALERT U FUCKING FUCKING FUCKING FUCKING IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought maybe cus u have recently started spoiling eveything I would try not to read any text on frontpage, BUT A HUGE PICTURE OF DRG KISSING A TROPHY WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
EDIT: Oh I didn't notice that TINY box that I would never scroll down to...
I am also going to have to say that I was very frustrated to have the finals spoiled for me immediately upon visiting TL. Yes I understand there is a hide spoilers button. But why would it be unchecked by default? If you're logging in from another computer or aren't automatically logged on when opening your browser (something I don't do because of security reasons) you're going to have the match spoiled anyways. Seriously TL, hide spoilers needs to be checked by default. I was really looking forward to watching these games and now the results have been ruined for me.

The issue is that the box is unchecked by defualt. So if you visit the main page before logging in (which I'd think includes a large number of people including myself) you're going to have the match spoiled.

Haha, I had a power outage or two (maybe more) a few minutes before the finals started. Having watched SC2 for pretty much the whole day, I decided I should just sleep.

I'm impressed at how many people are mad about the spoiler policy that was changed visibly like two weeks ago. (e: plus, if you're whining now, you should have voted in the poll when you had the chance).

there is a tick on the the front page which you can fill to hide spoilers
Yeah I should read every post ever written right? When I come to TL on a Saturday morning right before I watch my GSL finals I don't expect to see a giant spoiler on the fucking homepage. I'll definitely keep this in mind from now on. Thanks TL. You shits.
Wow so much qq going on in this thread. Do people just click to the last page and spout out whatever they are currently thinking without actually reading the previous pages? If some of these guys were to read, they'd know that they can solve all their future problems by just clicking a single box to hide spoilers. Personally, I like the change. They changed the design of the frontpage and announced a new spoiler policy. You could also see a lot of results of the important events on the frontpage in the last two weeks. How do you expect them to change the spoiler policy? Of course there will be some people who doesn't visit TL very often or people who simply don't notice any differences, but it's impossible not to surprise any people.
So how do you enable the spoiler free stuff on the website? I click my TL bookmark out of habit, and hadn't stayed up until 6am to watch the games. (sad face).

Feel bad for Genius though. I like how well he took that lost and was such a good sport. He also tried to be a showman at the same time. Too bad it didn't work out. I like how he mindgamed the hell out of DRG with the blink all in though. Very cerebral play.

The Giant Picture of DRG kissing the trophy is EXACTLY what they want to put on the front page. To have the whole community celebrating achievements and to be an up to date SC2 portal just like ESPN is for sports. If you dislike it, again there is the no spoiler button. If you are not aware of it, then what else could they have done to alert you by now
Other than the announcements + news about the change, they have been spoiling all sorts of results. ( MLG,ROG,GSL EVERYTHING). If you had visited the site at any point recently, you would have noticed that.

I have to say, I was really rooting for Genius. I love DRG, too, but I was really hoping to see that man come back from the slump with a championship. But he can do it again, I know it.
By the way, TL is my homepage...I went online to go to Gom.tv and watch, and I just BARELY glanced at the enormous spoiler right before I hit the macro for new tab.

wow really? I love esports too but wow,,,
DRG has obviously worked so hard to get where he is...just an amazingly competent players with solid strategies and great mechanics...Now I wonder if he can go for 2 more championships to match Nestea
Forgetting warp gate research, not being decisive in the base trade scenarios, missing forcefields... I feel like he could have won if he had played just a bit better.
Sucked for him that Crossfire was the 6th map though...
Also: was an entertaining finals but the level of play was not as high as Leenock vs. Jiajaki
Even if this may will result in a discussion about spoilers: If you don't want to get spoilered in sports, you don't visit sports related pages or read sports related magazines. If you don't want to get spoilered about the ending of a book, you don't watch the movie of it. If you don't want to see somebody, you don't visit the places you would be likely to meet that person. But why are you visiting an esports page if you don't want to read something about esports?
It's not the job of the pages to hide spoilers. In fact, they live partially from the information they provide and they got people especially to write news. I really don't get why people are mad at others for their own decisions. If you visit TL after the GSL Finals, OF COURSE there will be an article about the finals on the front page. If I don't want to get hit by a car, I don't walk on the street. Yes it is that easy.
massive gratz to DRG been a long time coming! Even though i tipped Genius im still happy with the result, first time ive watched a gsl (forcing myself to wake early) and thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing. Genius for the next one!
also on the spoilers, if i go to the bbcsport website, as i type i find every football (soccer) result right at the top of the page with NO spoilers, and no option to spoil. I'm grateful that TL has implemented spoilers in any form because a lot of other sites don't bother. I can totally understand where people are coming from: I think the issue is TL is still more of a community site than a news site. BBC is pure news so you go there to find out results if you dont want to know you don't freaking load the page. Trying to stay up on this fence as much as possible, TL also provides a lot of SC related news.Viewers to any website have a responsibility to self-censor.
My advice for next time, if you're unsure if the box is ticked, shut your eyes and scroll down!
DongRaeGu didn't forget to include his customary Zerg pessimism during his interview, mentioning the hardships that had to be overcome as a Zerg player.
*realism.
zerg has to deal with x100000 more shit than P or T do
This one was long overdue. Congratulations to DRG on struggling to go through Code B, then Code A, then MLG to finally enjoy the fruits of his labor. The man is truly the king of zerg.
Both of them did though. It was apparent there were a million mind games going on at the same time, so the decisions sometimes were differenr from expected.

After having seen those two results and finding them odd why not look into it instead of just assuming they were exceptions, TL is many things but most of all consistent.

I could not agree more.. I screamed when I opened TL because I wanted to watch it tonight.... God damnit!!
For those guys complaining about the front page news:
You know what? You have nobody to blame except yourself! I also missed the final last night but I have an IQ more than 80 to know that I should NOT logon teamliquid even though that'll be the first thing on any of my regular day. I came here to read the recaps only AFTER I've watched all the vods on GOMTV. Actually when I woke up the vods are not available atm, and it's hard to steer away from typing 'teamliquid' in the address bar. But if you don't want to get spoiled, you should be able to do that, too.
Good finals, could have been better. Genius didn't seem mentally ready for those games, he was trying to be too funny when the pressure was on. Proxy stargates, carriers? I mean if he just played standard 4 times in a row, the series might have looked different. DRG on the otherhand probably still had a flame still burning from MLG, believe me none of the other koreans want to be shown up by MKP. Both DRG and genius are probably equal in terms of skill, but DRG had a strong desire that Genius lacked.

Are you trolling, or what? Because of course if should be on the front page, even in your face if possible. It was the finals, an epic event none would want to miss. And it is headline news in the eSports wordl, per se. So yes, it can be on the front page for it is one of the biggest highlights at the moment.
Edit: The poster above, LimitSEA, probably gave a better response to your post. Now I also know about the hide spoiler function, something I did not previously notice.
are you retarded or what? do you understand what a ''spoiler'' is? im not agreeing 100% with the OP, but your reply is flat out stupid.
Nah, you're dumb. TL already addressed this when they implemented the new format. TL is going to put eSports news on the front page and if you really don't want to be spoiled, you just check the box that says Hide Spoilers. Otherwise, important news will be updated on the front page for everybody to see (as it should be, since TL is the premiere news site for everything related to Starcraft). Do you go to ESPN.com and throw a fit because it tells you who won basketball games?

Edit: Spoiler Policy: We're removing our spoiler policy for StarCraft 2 news.
For the minority that still want to visit TL without spoilers, here's how: - Hide Spoiler [Spoiler Process] - 1. Check the box at the bottom left of the front page, "hide spoilers." This will hide the Featured News and Community News sidebars, as well as hide any titles with spoilers on the front page, whether in images or in the TL articles or the Community News and Headlines section.
2. Register an account and collapse the forums (typically SC2 and SC2 Tournaments) that will have spoilers in their thread titles.
Not to take anything away from DRG but Genius threw at least two games away with the double proxy stargate as well as the double stargate carrier rush. I felt that Genius was using all of the builds that he had not shown anyone. Couple this with his HUGE indecisiveness several scenarios (not attacking the third when it only had 1 spore in the stargate proxy game, the hesitation in the two base trade scenarios, etc).
DRG is so good with Mutas, and it appears that Protoss still don't have a good counter to them. Frustrating series to watch as a Protoss player and someone who was rooting for Genius.
If I were Genius I would be so mad at DRG for coming into the booth and showing off. I thought Koreans frowned on that kind of thing. It was extremely tasteless.

Genius did the same thing to DRG in round of 32 so i think he has nothing to complain about. That is just friendly teasing.
Don't listen to the whiners that don't read the news TL! I'm so happy with the new way you guys are doing things. Honestly, it felt stupid to come on this website and read about a GSL Finals like 2 months after it happened. E-Sports will never go in the direction it should if we continued to do things that way! Things are more consistent now with the abundance of tournaments. Keep up the great work!

The things DRG did to Genius are the same sort of things that Genius has done to DRG. It's all in fun, they're great friends.
I don't know about you guys, but as a poor student I love that I can come to TL and see the outcome of my favorite players instantly makes life so much better as I can't affords the GOM vods. Thanks TL!
So Happy for DRG. He's been working SO HARD, travelling all around the world, staying focused. He's also an amazing individual. HE DESERVES THIS SO MUCH! Not taking away from Genius, he had a hero run. Congrats to all!!
I was really hoping for Genius to win since I think DRG has many GSL titles to come (I see him winning at least like 3) and who knows how long we'll have Genius for. Oh well.
I didn't see most of the games but congrats to DRG!
Also well to the people complaining about spoilers, it was on the front page for a while not to mention you don't see ESPN hiding the results of the Superbowl do you? If TL wants to claim it's a news site, it's gotta act like one. And Assembly and MLG Arena were both spoiled so I don't know how you don't get this being spoiled as an expectation so I dunno. Didn't think too much I would say.
I felt really sad watching, not because Genius lost but because of how he lost. I feel he could have won game 2 and game 5 if he was more decisive, but it just seems like he panicked. Oh well, eventually a Protoss is going to win another GSL...
That being said, its great to see DRG win a GSL title, he most definitively deserved it. It would have been easier for me to root for him if he wasn't against a 'toss (and an underdog at that), though
Thanks a lot for putting this on the front page, this is exactly the reason I came here this morning since I went to sleep before the last game. It's been a long time coming, but better late than never! Also congrats to DRG for the GSL win
Congrats to DRG but I really hope Genius doesn't lose confidence in his skill I'm pretty sure if he works harder he can make it to another GSL finals. Yes he did look indecisive and his cheeses failed pretty hard but he won most of the standard games against the best player in the world and had game 6 been played on any other map than crossfire guess what genius would have won and the series would have been decided on game 7. such a shame we had crossfire in the final. Hat off to these 2 for putting a great show. See you next time.

Deal with it
EDIT: This just in! DRG and Genius are now mortal enemies. They have recently been seen punching each other over and over and over and over, EVEN WHILE IN PUBLIC!
It's clear these two hate each other and will never be reconciled. It's rumored that Team MVP will soon break into two new teams (Team M\ and Team /P) with each rival as a new captain. We better go make 8 100-page threads about it.

oh seriously so many whine about it, there is an option anti spoiler, this is a community site centered around freaking esport, and we're talking about fucking GSL, just shut up about it, good article, Genius really didnt seem confident enough vs DRG, he must have been on a bad spree against him in practice to try out so many mind games, even if he won the first game straight up, he seemed nervous about playing standard, I cant figure out if it's because he was nervous playing a GSL final, or simply he thought he wouldnt win DRG without some all ins and weird strategies mixed in there. Anyway the amount of mind games and often times indecision made this finals really good for me to watch, but I guess it was way less entertaining for "lower level" viewers, like Tastosis said, the mind game Genius put on DRG on Cloud Kingdom was insanely good, but really hard to catch, REALLY hard to understand how perfect that was, and it ended up not being entertaining as a fight since Genius raped DRG but thats the beauty of SC2, good strat, well executed, including you're going for fast third, you should rape your opponent. The carrier choice tho was completely stupid, phoenixes or not, it will get scouted in time, it was cute and basing the game on "maybe he'll do a huge mistake trying to counter this and i'll win", other than that, good finals
I wish GSL would reconsider their website/gomplayer approach. Having to go to their website first, have it load fully, do several clicks then only to start the stream on the external gomplayer while more webpages load fully, is an unnecessary und cumbersome bottleneck. There should be a stream bookmark service in gomplayer itself. That way you would only have to start your gomplayer and be done with it. Instead, thousands of viewers have to swamp their website when the games are about to start, deteriorating its stability and availability for those who might actually read up on stuff there or view VODs.
Anyways, congratulations to DRG for winning the first GSL title in 2012. I'm sure everyone already felt this overdue, as he is usually mentioned among the most prolific players worldwide.
I swear freaken Genius would have had game 5 and 6 if he wasn't indecisive. DRG lost majority of his army both of the games, made me cringe as I watched it QQ. Gratz to DRG for teh win though.

We will never know if Genius would have won game 5 if he didn't turn around. As for game 6, honestly he played brilliantly, I'm so sad he wasn't rewarded for that because the map was crossfire. He got carried away in game 6 and attacked the spine instead he should have just continued to deny a third base and wait that they both run out of minerals because Genius had a much better army he would have won that way. I think Genius has to realize that he's one of the best if no the best mid/late game protoss. I feel think he underestimated his chances to beat DRG in the late game and that's why he went for those 2 stargates shitty build that basically cost him the game. Congrats to DRG though he truly is the best player in the world right now and he deserves that GSL title.
I feel kind of sad that the finals DRG wins is partly because of really stupid mistakes on his opponents' part. Genius seemed incredibly comfortable in the matchup at first (dat pre-BL timing), but just fell apart after game 2...

You could also turn it around and say that the reason the blink rush and macro game worked was because DRG had to play more safe than he would have wanted because he knew Genius was willing to cheese. Of course the carrier build was pretty much suicide but I definitly think the two stargate build as such was decent. On Antiga he would have done alot of damage without the horrible miss-micro and the doube phoenix did decent enough damage.
He lost 2 or 3 games due to on-the-fly decision making, but I think his choice in strategies was close to perfect regardless.
I voted for DRG cause I figured he was the better player but as the games went on I was pulling for Genius. I personally thought it was a great series.

Something should be said about game 3 and Genius' amazing trick on DRG. The late plus1 and 4th gas that got canceled to lead DRG into thinking it was a 3rd base build. One of the greatest plays i have ever seen.
One of the best finals ever, along with DRG vs MMA. Both of them deserved to win, and somewhat this is what happened. Congrats DRG, you deserve your own spot in the Gom's Wall of Fame.
(btw, the new trophy... I didn't like it very much :s)
There are reasons why I think it's sad that this is my first teamliquid post. First of all it's beacause my main reason of posting is because I got spoiled about results of the GSL finals, which I am still about to see and enjoy with my friends when I wake up hungover tomorrow. Second of all it's because I, apparently, have an IQ below 80 since I didn't see the box where I could check for "no spoilers". Now I have done so and I'll probably be able to do my Liquidbets, check my Jinro (or MC, HerO, Ret or any other) stream and never post again since the site will continue to be absolutely marevelous for me, as it always has been. The only thing that I have to say as a complaint against this site spoiling the finals of a tournament that I've followed since the first game (which is no small feat mind you since I both work and do full time studies) is that you could've made the "no spoiler" checkbox as an option to un-check instead to check. This would make it so that everyone that wants to know and discuss the recent happenings of the GSL (or any other starcraft tournament) could do so by choice. And not make it so that I, and many with me, would be spoiled about the finals of one of the best (imo the best) GSL seasons as of yet. Yes I know that this makes me look like I'm stupid, and a whiner, for posting about this but please teamliquid change it to be the other way around, I don't have the heart to read posts like mine again.
Other then that, thank you for the awesome write up. Which I am going to read tomorrow after I've watched DRG winning against Genius with 4-2.
I loved the interviews and all the jabbing Genius and DRG do to each other. Stomping into each other's booths after a win wtih taunts. It's obvious they are great friends. It was very hilarious and cute.

Look at his face during it, he is not taking it harshly.
Can't believe drg won!! If genius just turtles and collosus push he would have won every game, Im not crying imba, but this games mechanics have been messed up since day one. Protoss and terran are just simply better races then zerg protoss turtle to death ball is unstoppable. You could tell genius was hurt when drg enterd, even i hurt a little
Really enjoyable finals series to watch but still I feel somewhat disappointed with Genius's performances. I feel like he threw at least 3 games in the series due to major blunders =S
Anyway, congratulations to DRG a truly deserving champion! Better luck to Genius next time, I hope this isn't the last I've seen of him in a major final.
First off, I just want to say that the new spoiler policy is excellent and a step in the right direction.
However, I can understand why a lot of people are upset. I think the only mistake TL made was not making the policy change more visible. Not everyone checks the site everyday, and the policy change article got wiped pretty quickly from the front page during that weekend's deluge of news items for MLG and Assembly.
But what's done is done. I hope everybody would've figured out by now after MLG, Assembly, and GSL what TL's new policy is. Keep up the good work!
So awesome, I wish my internet hadn't crapped out during the games, but I am so happy that DRG won. Sucks for Genius though. He is an amazing player I am sure he will win one this year.

lol? "This is not a balance whine but P and T are simply better races than Z, the current GSL champion, since day 1". Riiiiight, your entire post is a silly balance whine
Didnt know the results till i came on TL, and I have gsl subscription, but it was still cool to see a big announcement. Like the new format
The production was great. Artosis was on point with analytical commentating. Tasteless was funny as always. The matches were epic and fun to watch. And DRG has won a GSL which I thought was gonna happen this year anyways. Can't wait for the next one and I'm definately going to buy a season pass. The countless days getting up at 4 A.M. to watch the GSL/GSTL this past month have been awesome!

I know its a pain, but to be fair, you came to a Starcraft 2 news/discussion/fan site the day after the biggest tournament on the planet and expected to not see the news somewhere? Just hold off, watch it on GOMTV, then come here afterward.
I do the same for mixed martial arts news. If I cant watch the event live, I avoid MMA websites like the plague or I'm prepared for a big splash picture spoiler.
The spoiler tick box is a bit backwards though I agree
Nice writeup, though it would've been more exciting if Genius hadn't botched 3 of the games. Game 1 showed so much promise too

You really need to watch more starcraft if that's the case.
So, another final that didn't really deliver. Although this was better than many, we actually had a really entertaining series, the mistakes were so many, especially from Genius' side. The proxy doublestargate-attack was one of the worst I've ever seen. He completely blacked out. The same goes for the 5th game. Suiciding so many Sentries into Queens of creep is just.. DRG attacking with like 6 queens and roaches but not realizing his queens were slower than the roaches was also a facepalm-moment right before.
I don't know. I just wish we could always get exciting and well-played finals..
On a second note, I had no troubles what so ever with the stream during any of the six games.
Aaaaah. Me non gusta! I felt Genius overcomplicated things while DRG just went for it. DRG has more tournament experience after all :/ Goodbye Liquibet rank. But great games, a definite must watch for every gsl fan.

Dear ibv.hefe, Thank you for ignoring prominent policy announcements and not checking the anti-spoiler box in the lower left of the front page, then acting like it's TL's fault. Regards, Quixotic
To be honest, the policy announcement was flooded down pretty quickly and was never given enough spotlight. TL should have posted the announcement with a banner on top like to do for emergency/significant breaking news. A thread just won't do it justice after years of it being how TL worked. That thread got buried in like a few days.
When Google changed their policy, they shoved the notice in your face.
Hm, what I saw was not that many people, allot of which were foreigners. I am concerned that SC2 has absolutely no growth in terms of viewership and interest from Korean fans, though I certainly hope that is not the case.

The future of esports may not lie within korea...but the international scene.
Why the hell would someone come to TL between a match they want to watch happening and them actually watching it? This isn't an issue of someone ruining it for you as much as you doing something completely retarded.
If you were at work when a football game was on, would you turn on sport radio and complain they ruined the game for you?
Also the problem with having to actively choose to get result spoiled would ruin the whole idea to begin with: they want new people to get exited about SC2. If a newbie comes in and has to first discover that he can see the results, that spoils the whole idea to begin with. Not only do I totally understand what they did, I support it whole heartily as well. Definitively a step in the right direction!
Back on topic: I really enjoyed the finals. Was with a mate and we had a couple of beers while watching the series. While not the best games ever, they were still enjoyable. Genius, I was rooting for you! Why were you so indecisive? You could have destroyed DRG on the metropolis games if you just attacked! Anyways, congrats DRG! You outplaed Genius in the end! GG
People are complaining about being spoiled? Really? Would you log in to ESPN.com the day after the Superbowl and not expect to have the winner plastered across the top?
Genius was a let down honestly. :\ His builds were all too similar and he biffed the one major surprise (proxy stargates). I was hoping we would finally see a different Protoss GSL champ outside of MC.

Yeah, great statement to make after 1-2 years of the game being released and BW still being the main game in Korea.
Just finished watching the games and I must say that Dongraegu was the deserving winner... Seriously Genius, why so indeceisive...? <.<
But alas, at the end of the day even finishing 2nd at the GSL is so damn baller, congrats to MVP for having both the winner and the runner-up of the gsl in their team.
Props to DRG. Dude paid his dues, had the talent, and kicked some ass.
Mad props to Genius! Dude paid his dues, had the talent, kicked some ass, and MADE CARRIERS IN THE FINALS! Given that Carriers may never be a part of the game again after HotS, win or lose Genius is *awesome*!

Just... wow. Toss are doing great lately, especially in Korea. Genius had a good shot at winning this but was obviously more taken by the situation at hand than DRG was and thus underperformed and made more mistakes. DRG definitely deserved the win though after finishing 2nd in Blizzard Cup and MLG.
I'm very disappointed that the name of the winner is written so explicitly, and especially since the match just finished. I didn't even know it was aired yet, but I've been _really_ looking forward to this match. Now it's spoiled, just because I wanted to check out Liquidpedia. Please reconsider your Spoiler-policy, thank you.
I cannot believe the Starcraft community has such a hard time not going to Starcraft sites when they don't want to know the results of a casted game.....
Great finals. DRG deserved the win, although I was rooting for Genius. Personally I think he gave away the series by going for Carriers while he still had the advantage. Games 5 and 6 were quite close...
I've always hated the zerg, as a loyal protoss, but DRG is really great guy, a sportsman and a player, both of them deserved to win. But there was less drama, lesser than the finals in the November GSL and Blizzcup. And there's always a little luck. For example the last match on Crossfire - If Genius could break with the stalkers the new base of DRG, who knows what would happen on the next, final match. Every second is fatal. And the carriers - DRG attacked them in the perfect moment, no second more or less. Genius won in the protoss favoure maps, that's for sure, but he made lots of risks, we have to respect his brave game!

Can't complain about this finals. It wasn't the best display of skills but it was very exciting to watch.

I'm quoting this one to address but lots of people have said the same thing:
What you're saying would be true...IF teamliquid.net was a news site and ONLY a news site. If theres a football game I want to watch then I know not to go to the BBC Sport site because it'll almost certainly have the results up. But TL is not just a news site, thats why its different from ESPN and the BBC. Its a combination of community site, information site (through the liquipedia), streaming portal, player database, event tracker, etc. Some people want or need to use the other features of the site without being spoiled by the news part of it so frankly I think you're being rather unfair to these people.
Honestly what might be best is a splash screen before you get into the site where you can select between the spoilered or unspoilered versions of the site. Given that you can already tick a box to remove the spoilers I don't see how it'd be so difficult to incorporate something like this as an alternative to the box ticking.
Edit: As for the finals, I caught some of them though I missed some games due to my music lesson. Very disappointed that Genius lost but honestly his play looked almost panicked. I think with a bit more decisiveness he could have taken this. He kept getting himself into good positions and then just throwing it away. However all credit to DRG for holding it together and winning the final; some very solid play from him and he definitely played much more clinical and decisive than Genius.
The finals was incredibly frustrating to watch. Not just because of the stream problem, but also because of Genius's indecision which cost him the series.
Genius was noticeably upset after the defeat and sounded angry towards DRG in the post match interview. I couldn't quite catch it all, but I believe he said "I can't stand the sight of him right now" (in a very harsh way) after DRG made balance comments. It felt really awkward.. I don't care if you're on the same team, you win an incredibly high-stake series like the finals, either congratulate on games well played, handshake, hug, or do nothing. Furthermore, you absolutely do not add salt to the wound by implying, indirectly or not, that Genius's achievements were attributable to the state of the metagame, even if that's what you believe.

Good post! I agree completely.
I even suspect (although remotely) that someone from the team may have hinted at such a possibility to DRG, Drop Tech was the perfect answer to that build and almost to that build only. It killed one of the most daring and yet to be surprisingly effective build.
We saw carriers made in a GSL finals for god's sake, respect to Genius, he earned mine for sure.
PS: Don't forget the pre-match promises to team members, if DRG wins he will buy a Huge-ass TV and a game console to the teamhouse, while as to Genius just a meal treat.

I think most people would agree that DRG needed this GSL win more than anybody in the world right now. He was constantly getting second places and never getting the recognition he deserved. The loss at MLG arena just one week before was a real blow to his spirit, Catz even mentioned this in his blog. Many still considered him overrated right up until that championship win. It was a win not just for himself, but to all the fans who've believed in him since the very beginning. I'm proud to be one of them. XD
congrats to drg! the only one who really got him close to a loss and by that elimination was gumiho (imo). but it is sad to hear that genius believes that this was his last finals... but if he gets deep again in season 2, he may wait w/ military service.
If Genius properly controls his Void Rays in game 2 (or DRG's extra queen doesn't pop out at the perfect time and at the 3rd), suddenly the Carriers in game 4 become, for lack of a better term, genius. DRG is down 0-3 and there's probably no way DongRaeGu goes for the mass drop at that point, giving Genius the time he would need to build up enough Carriers. Would have been a great finale for one of the most memorable StarCraft units before it's impending doom. Might be giving him too much credit, but I wonder if Genius may have been going all out for the 4-0 with that plan from the start, knowing he needed to win early to avoid playing on Crossfire later. Absolutely nothing against DRG, but in Genius, I saw a guy put it all on the line, really put his heart into it, and felt he deserved to win this one. You can see it in his eyes while talking about his dad at the end. Trying to keep his cool, his swagger, but clearly on the verge of tears, as he states he'll win 4-0 the next time they meet. Just feel sorry for the guy, knowing this might might be his only shot at a GSL Championship, whereas DRG will almost certainly see more chances. I'll admit there might be some bias there since, although I'm currently playing Zerg, I'm Protoss at heart. Anyways, great season and great games IMO. Can't wait for more Code S!
