The June 24th SC2 Event went down today in Korea, and PlayXP were live on the scene covering it live. Of course, TL News was also online, translating it as it happened.
Relevant bits:
Chris Siggarty announced the final closed beta is going to be for around 2 weeks starting in early July.
They revealed the plane with the huge SC II logo on the side. There are two planes with the SC II branding, one international and one for national flights. They'll operate that way for six months.
Picture via PlayXP.
There will be an open beta starting in Korea and Taiwan on July 27th, alongside the official launching.
There will be some advertising with Lotteria as well (Korean fast food chain)
Multiple pricing plans besides the 69,000 won ($60~70) unlimited play one. There's a 2,000 won one day pass, 9,900 won 30 day pass.
World of Warcraft subscribers get SC II for free during 7, 30, and 90 day subscriptions (Korea). In essence, you're paying for a combined B.net account.
Blizz donated 600,000,000 won in scholarships for IT/Gaming majors, and for ex-progamers.
Garimto vs Grubby special exhibition match. Garimto won 2-0 (Garimto actually played the beta actively).
Q&A session with blizz guys. This post updated as the Q&A goes on. These are very condensed versions of the questions and answers being transcribed by the PlayXP journalists in real time, so they may sound very curt and blunt.
Q: Providing Korean WoW users with SC II for free seems like an interesting ploy, though there seems to be no legal problems with it. What lead you to chose this kind of strategy?
A: We might suffer some losses in the short term, but the most important thing is the community. Having a loyal community is very beneficial in the long term.
Q: Will you sell the game in physical packages? The CEO of Sonokong (a Korean toy manufacturer/Game distributor, they distributed the Warcraft III expansion pack last) is here, so what are your plans for PC Bangs?
A: We decided that distributing the game online was the right way to go for the Korean market. You can easily play the game anywhere you want. Since we planned today as a marketing event, we're not really prepared to answers questions about logistics.
Q: So you've made both a censored and uncensored version of the game, what are your plans for releasing the uncensored version of the game?
A: We're considering all options at the moment. We want Korean gamers to have a similar experience to other gamers around the world. We'll try to achieve that without making things too complex.
Q: Will you sell the collector's edition?
A: No plans at the time.
Q: What are the pricing plans for buying SC II and WoW playing time for use at PC Bangs?
A: You can use WoW time brought at PCBangs to play SC II as well.
Q: During the first phase of the closed beta you must have received a lot of feedback. What areas of the game did people want changed the most?
A: We really received a lot of feedback. Balance, features, ladder, chatting, etc... The interesting thing about this beta was we held it in three different areas simultaneously. Because of this, the balance feedback differed from region to region.
Korean gamers wanted zerg to be nerfed, while NA/Europe users kept asking for zerg buffs. This was because Korean gamers are very tactically astute, and those tactics spread to Europe and NA eventually. So the feedback from Korean gamers was very important.
Q: Will the progamer scholarships be limited to ex-brood war gamers?
A: We don't really know a lot about scholarships, which is why we donated the money to the Korean Student Aid Foundation, and told them where we'd like the money to be used. They will formulate a plan and reveal the details later.
Q: Will there be plans to release the game in DVD format as was done with world of warcraft?
A: We released WOW on DVD because there were many users who wanted it in that form. We'll have to find out what the demands of the SC II players are first, and then we'll decide on further distribution methods.
Q: Are there any other region specific benefits in other areas?
A: Making SC II free for WOW subscription holders is a Korea-only benefit. The market is different in every country, so we have to make the right choices for each one.
Q: Will the 69,000 won unlimited use license apply to the expansion as well?
A: It's too early to talk about the expansion.
Q: What are your plans for Starcraft II Broadcasts?
A: We plan to address that in the future.
Q: There was a brief disconnect screen showing up during the special event today. What was the problem? Were you playing on LAN?
A: We don't know why such an error occurred, and no there was no LAN mode.
Q: Having to create a battle.net account might be a barrier of entry to new players?
A: There are a lot of benefits to creating a battle.net account. And since future Blizzard games will be played through the account, we think it will be a minimal investment for most gamers.
Thanks for the translation. Hopefully they come out with firmer dates for the start and end of phase 2 soon.
EDIT: Well sounds like now its June 27th for PCBang in Korea and July 1st for everyone else. Let's see how long they keep it running before release comes around. I know they said 2 weeks, but shit end it in the middle of a week? Should extend it to the weekend of the 18th, another 3 days, instead of cutting the cord on a weeknight.
Its great that they are recognizing what the Korean esports scene has done for them, but they've got to ease up on the favouritism here. It's getting a bit excessive.

Favoritism? ha, well, when your government interferes with the sales of Blizzard, maybe Blizzard will be more interested in making unorthodox business deals. It has nothing to do with "Favoritism" of the Koreans. Its a good marketing ploy, and a loophole to get non-adults to be able to play the game. Thus more money. And, having a supportive community around the world is good, and Korea was not receiving sc2 with open arms, maybe this event changed things in some people's minds.
Anyway, does anyone know where i can find the vods for the 2 players duking it out?
I really like the testing of the different price points to get the game. I wouldn't mind a bnet 2.0 overall subsciption as long as there was another option to buy the game outright as well.
Korean gamers wanted zerg to be nerfed, while NA/Europe users kept asking for zerg buffs. This was because Korean gamers are very tactically astute, and those tactics spread to Europe and NA eventually. So the feedback from Korean gamers was very important.
I had a feeling this was the reason why Zerg kept being nerfed despite American players complaining that Terran was imbalanced and Zerg was the weakest race.
The last time Blizzard showed race statistics, Zerg had the highest win percentage and Terran had the lowest win percentage in Korea, and it was by a 10% differential too.
I don't speak Korean, so I don't know if this is true, though. Can someone who knows Korean verify that Korean netizens really did ask for Zerg nerfs?
Also, what does "tactically astute" mean, exactly? Koreans are known to have really good basic mechanics, but I'm not sure what that phrase means.

Means Koreans have really good tactics. Just reinforcing a well deserved stereotype.

Not only that, but alot of them are complaining about the price of the game being too expensive. Blizzard-Activision doesn't have to worry about that in US because all their fanboys will buy anything that they make, regardless of cost.
I wouldn't be surprised if the monthly model allowing you to play all blizzard games starts extending to other regions once they have 4 or 5 games under their belt. It is a great model for them, in that it gets everyone playing their new games, it generates a constant revenue stream, and it allows people to try all of blizzard's games without a huge up front investment.
Badass! I am just glad the game is coming-- I don't care if they get it for free or not, I just want the game.., I would be willing to pay 100 for the damn thing. Just let me have it!!
Blizzard seems to be restoring the faith of the community pretty quick. I love that they donated ot the education of ex-progamers. 600,000,000 Won is about half a million US dollars, that's extremely generous.
I really like the whole scholarship idea. I hope that this can be expanded on because it's something that e-sports is missing that has helped fuel competition in physical sports so well. It's hard to take pro gaming seriously if it's a dead-end short term career.
starcraft airplane! mad!!!!!! WOW@ BLIZZARD !!!! I havent been able to play the beta yet, but i spend 3 pay checks on a laptop to play sc2 in a month when July 27th comes around(betas' closed now). Fortunately I dont lack opinions thanks to forums!!
Didnt Blizzard Dumb down starcraft 2's skill requirement(Maybe not i havent got to play)? I mean, In korea already, A pro couldnt Win more than 6 out of 10 bnet games in a row against public players. They are pretty focused on advertising to the heart of starcraft which is korea, making sc2 free, but why take away the more advanced gaps which is being able to aim your workers to minerals during all the hurrass and defend micro is being thrown down. I know personally I was Only barely starting to Control my units ..barely.. And i think thats changed to almost being Ai'd. keep starcraft hard its why its fun. Maybe they will released an advanced korean addition with sloppy AI and less easy buttons.

My advice, try the game before you even start talking about it like you just did. And I'm also curious where you got your statistics from? (6/10 games won etc.).
It is true that they "dumbed" the game down a little, making it a little more friendly for totally new players. But I'd still consider it damn difficult on a higher level. And I didn't really get your post that well.. so.. ugh...
Question; With this WoW-free-sc2-thingie, does it ONLY apply in Korea?.. God I'd love to have a free sc2.

He pulled it out of his ass, SC2 progamers will still be able to 100-0 public players but what people are slightly worried about is that the game might not evolve after 10 years like BW has still been evolving. That's left to be seen and at this point nobody can be sure about it.
It's a great fucking game, people that thought SC2 could've been much better than this are delusional.

Better than us and North America, it would seem. It's funny that Tester says terran is overpowered, he plays protoss, and the general idea is that zerg isn't balanced. So much chaos!
It sucks that with pc bangs/internet cafes you can't walk in and play like any other non-mmo. They should make a pc bang licensed version so people don't have to fork out $70 for an account to try the game or play with friends occasionally.

this confused me too, I had to look it up. I'll clarify: They're referring the amount PC bang owners have to pay to use the game, not the PC bang customers.
The biggest package is 3,000 hours of SC II or WoW, at 671,000 won ($600 or so). That's about 203 won an hour. For comparison, PCBangs charge anywhere between 500 to 2,000 won an hour to customers.
Wait, so are they saying that we'll have to pay to make a Battle.net account? This question stems from the comment about making a bnet account being "a minimal investment."
You guys have to remember (this only applies to people that live in the US and probably Europe) that we are only paying $60 (or $150 for the CE) for essentially a lifetime subscription. Koreans are essentially have to pay $15 a month (or whatever the equivalent is in Korea) to play the game (because it comes free with WoW). A couple of you have said you'd buy SC2 if you got it free with your WoW subscription but in reality you're already on the better end of the deal only having to pay $60 as a one-time fee.
Of course, unless I totally misunderstood what they were saying.
starcraft 2 planes LOLZ. atleast there not WOW planes which saves korea from being the laughingstock of the world. i bet North Korea thinks this is really funny

it's mentioned in the OP that there will be the standard one time fee, unlimited use option.
I like how so much is being invested in different ways to help boost the potential of sc2, even if im not fine with the game on release, i really like all the effort thats going into advertising. I hope we get to see some great stuff here in the us too
Q: So you've made both a censored and uncensored version of the game, what are your plans for releasing the uncensored version of the game?
A: We're considering all options at the moment. We want Korean gamers to have a similar experience to other gamers around the world. We'll try to achieve that without making things too complex.
This answer scares me. If the objective is for everybody to have a similar experience without making things too complex, the solution is obvious - water down the game for everybody. At least that is what my paranoid reading between the lines tells me. Hope I'm wrong.
Grubby went for DTs but Garimto effectively defended with 1-1-1 (1-1-1 was written in the chinese forum, I'm assuming its 1 rax-fac-port) with fast ravens Grubby kept pressuring with HTs and Immortals but Garimto defended successfully with tanks in siege mode. Garimto then transitioned into mass MMM and took the game. Also, Garimto dropped a nuke on Grubby's natural.
YouTube vids on the event:
Some interesting pics I found while browsing for more news:
Anyone got an update on Garimto's involvement these days, is he still playing alot, still a member of MYM?? Did he switch to terran or is that just for the show match?
Reasoning: This dominion thing has unlocked 1 new thing a day recently, if it continutes the last one will be released July 6th. Blizzard has said the best thing will be last. Blizzard has also said beta will back early July and last 2 weeks. July 6th is clearly early July and if it were to start on July 6th and last 2 weeks that would leave 1 week before release which seems like good timing. Therefore I think unlockable 20 is the beta is back, and it will be released on July 6th.

From what I've came across, he is still a member of MYM, and he played random during the beta but decided to play terran for the show match
Wow ! Really nice and interesting interview, thanks a lot for the translation ! This reinforce my faith in Blizzard, their position and statement are really smart. And lol @ the plane, so wicked sick !
I wouldn't be surprised if the beta was brought back on july 12th to 26 because of the world cup... and their release date... it seems to fit in perfectly don't you agree?
Cool interview, I understood that the WoW players will share accounts for bnet and pay for it as usual. Tat does not apply if you only own SC2 right? There won't be any monthly fees?
Wait so they don't get collectors edition in Korea? Also I hope the NA version is in DVD not that it matters much just makes installation easier on my end, I remember when my WoW cd's came in 4's had to sit there and watch it to switch disc. That's pretty cool how they are going to get sc2 for free, they deserve it for pushing the sc franchise as big as it is.
WTF is with the 2nd (Orangy) plane? Don't they need to put some more info on the tail wing, or at least the KA logo (Pepsi)? It looks so messed up with "Blizzard" on the wing, but hey whatever roles.
I think the best thing would be having SC2 related stuff inside the plane. Not necessarily anything special, but maybe sc2 ad on the packaged food, or a little SC2 pamphlet in the seat pouch. The coolest thing which would be really ownage is if they had SC2 playable in the first-class section of the plane - KA would get a whole lot more passenger requests! no?
It seems like blizzard wants their WoW players to devote their time and money to SC2 so now they'll have less time to play WoW, and a longer amount of time it takes for them to get bored of it. It also seems like they don't care about their SC1 community, just their larger, paying one. In the end, everything blizzard does seem to be for money

It is nice to know which community they are loyal to...WoW.
The Korean MMORPG market is dominated by Korean games like Aion. So it makes sense for Blizzard to couple SC2 with WoW in order to take back some of the market shares.

Obviously they are going to be loyal to a community that has made them a ridiculous amount of money. Why wouldnt they?
It wasn't he community that made them the money. It was the pricing scheme for WoW that made them that much money. Their SC fans are just as numerous and fanatical. But the pricing model for MMOs is just more profitable than the one for RTSs.
That’s the most effective game marketing strategy did the Blizzard did, IMO along the chance to play free if you’re a WOW subscriber. Coz the spread of news was spread so fast and comments where flood over forums even our warcraft gold (guild name), most of the time this is the conversation and envy our Korean guildmates.
I wanna be on that plain on my next visit at Korea.

Don't complain. Blizzard is doing the right thing and converting WoW players to Starcraft. Theirs will be the necks you trod as you climb the ladder.
Don't be naive. Blizzard is doing what Activision tells them and that is creating more WoW-addicts from those that play something other than SC2. Making every SC2 player posses a WoW subscription is a good incentive for WoW to be that other-than-sc game.

It's all speculation. The latest information from blizz is that the servers will definately not start on july 1. And they still don't know any date when the beta goes online.
chiratoss that doesn't make any sense. You just effectively said : "The latest information from blizzard is that they still don't know any date when the beta goes online."
That's not the latest information. That's the lack of the latest information, or an absence of any information whatsoever. When you say on July 1st that the beta will not go online on July 1st it seems prophetic to anyone who doesn't look at the date and time of your post.
hey now is 12:28 cyprus time i try to log in in to the bnet star craft 2 beta and it says to em that my cliend version can be found wtf ??????/ is beta up ??
@opl3sa There had been a bluepost on Wednesday on one of the European Forums, because of all those speculations.
I'm still seaching an going to edit this post.
Edit: It is a bluepost from the US Forum, that's why I searched so hard^^ ------- Basically, we heard several different dates regarding Phase Two. We went from June 27th to July 1st and tomorrow we'll probably have a new one. Just remember that all these dates are just speculations without an official confirmation from Blizzard. ... we'll be more than happy to share with you the official date as soon as it will be available ... ------- http://forums.battle.net/thread.html?topicId=25626345360
Yes, there's a "probably" in it, but I think this was very distinct, that July 1st cannot be the date of relaunch. Especially this post was written on June 30th. And yes, that's indeed a lack of information. But more than nothing ^^
P.S.: In Europe, we are 7h behind in time, so it was 11am in Germany...
Yes I believe at this point, we are all getting unrecognized client by battle.net servers. This means battle.net servers are up and online, and rejecting our clients.
Our clients are being rejected because they have not *openly* distributed the latest patch through the normal channel.
Unfortunately this ultimately means nothing for obtaining a date when the patch will be available to us. But all signs are pointing to -----> extremely soon.

It most likely just means they are going to have a patch before the beta will be up to log onto the servers. I expect this week or next week (..obviously)
