I actually prefer the original post limit over the new no-night-talking idea. I think that a strict post limit would be something really interesting to try out. This game doesn't need to be everyone's cup of tea, it's an experiment.

Okay guys, caught up on the thread from my phone. I'm currently building a circuit at work so that means I'm not working at my computer most of the day. However, I'm not a very spammy player at the best of times, so I don't expect the post limit to really affect me very much; I'm hoping that it's main effect will be to force certain other players in this game to consolidate their posts, which will make the game way easier for me to keep up with.

Regarding the pm policy discussion, I'm torn on several fronts. I like the idea of being open about who we are mason ing and masoned to, as suggested by drh or someone earlier, since it allows connection analysis and also since we can put pressure on people who were masoned to dead townies or scum later in the game. However, if people mason strong townreads as gas been suggested, and then are open about it, we have all the disadvantages of revealing our townreads in any other game - telling scum who to kill. ATM I think the advantages of openness outweigh, so I would caution people against mason ing super strong town reads. Instead I think we should use our masons on either Avon reads or null reads to try to better understand people; if they become town reads because of the Pam's then you can discuss the game in secret, and it they become scum reads then awesome lynch them.

In that vein I'm strongly considering mason ing oatsmaster. His first posts seem quite scummy to me. The pressure on hapa to produce scum reads like seven posts into the game seems manufactured. However, I'm aware that I have a history in two or three or more games of going after oatsmaster when we are actually both town; I'm not always wrong about him I think, and each game it's a different behavior of his that I find scummy, and every time I feel like it's for a good reason, but sometimes I'm wrong. The only pause I have is that oatsmaster seems like he's already been masoned by several people, and if one town person becomes a huge mason nexus then they're an easy target for scum to disrupt our communication. So I'll think about that.

One other thing - these newbies are being pretty weirdly aggressive, not sure why. Kolly is apparently voting drh because of a policy disagreement, not sure how serious this is. If he sticks to this read I'd say it seems manufactured, but it's possible he thinks he's doing a "pressure vote". I want to see how this develops, if he backs off then how he justifies it will be very important. As for malongo, he has like three posts so well have to see where that goes, but ATM there's little reasoning for his vote, which makes me suspicious as well; plus the fact that he's throwing his limited posts around with little content.

I also think the scum reads on sloosh are wrong, or at least premature. I actually agree with him that a dead thread is bad for town and something worth avoiding. It can make it easier for scum to hide from the majority of the thread. Fooling one or two people is much easier than fooling a whole group IMO. I disagree with sloosh's conclusion that we should avoid using our pms though; I think we just need to understand that as townies it's important for us to see the thread as the main part of the game and use pms to help that, and to pressure people who don't. I don't like that his post is only about setup rather than reads, but hopefully in his next 19 posts he will fix that up.

I also want to call out VA and ask for some discussion of reads rather than setup. That's the best way IMO to tell apart whether he's actually scum hiding from pms as some believe or if he's a stubborn townie with a cause.

Also question for discussion: should we save some pm choices for later in the game? When we have more developed reads and pushing people for information and discussing the game outside the thread will probably be more useful?

1. Sloosh has three posts now that are entirely about PMs and mechanics. I don't like that. not one bit.
2. on looking back oats has already been masoned by both drh and ryan. I'm deciding not to mason him (yet at least) because (a) they will figure him out, and (b) it's in towns best interest to have the pm network be less centralized.
3. therefore, I am masoning sloosh.

Other comment: I really don't like what this post says about VE:

Hi guys! I'm going to be keeping a running tally of my posts to try and remind myself that I can't spam in this game as I'm wont to do.

but it's not just that ve made a spammy useless post and went against his own advice not to do that, that's very ve-ish. it's also that a large amount of things went down in the thread which I would expect VE to comment on if he was town, which he doesn't. If the spammy post came at a spammy point in the game it wouldn't be a big deal. But we've had the whole sloosh-ryan policy fight, the newbies voting drh and mz for no reason, a bunch of people's opening posts coming in to the thread - stuff i would expect VE to think about and have something to say about when he checks in to the thread.

There's also the fact that VE wants to kill drh and I don't really understand why. What is so scummy about his posts? I agree that it's suspicious or suboptimal that he's using up his post count so fast, but what about their actual content does VE think is bad? I don't know.

@VE:
1. anyone who has played long enough to know who sandro et al are will have noticed their absence, and anyone who doesn't know who they are won't care. And identifying lurkers less than 24 hours into day 1 is never what I call useful.
2. your suspicion on wiggles seems forced. he talked about a total of two players in his post - focused scumreads. he's wrong ovc but the point remains, he's only made one post, and the fact that it avoids talking about two new people, one of whom is super lurky at this point, doesn't seem to me like a reason to put wiggles on your death list. I too have not talked about malongo or khipples, neither have a lot of other people who have made more than one post.
3. i'm always suspicious of someone who says "jk lol" when they get called out for a bad or unjustifiable stance.

@wiggles:
Did you read my second post? It does not seem like it.

Anyway I think you might be getting too caught up in my language. Do you disagree with my reasons for finding oatsmaster, sloosh, or VE scummy? Or just with the way that I phrased it and the fact that I decided not to pm oats right away? Cause the latter doesn't make much sense as a reason to suspect me.

Ugh I don't know but I just have to say I'm suspicious of Wiggles for X reason"? Because if that's the case, what do you think I have to gain by saying I'm suspicious of Wiggles if I'm scum? Or do you think I just needed to round out my list to include 3 players or something? What exactly are you accusing me of SnB?

(6/20)

im saying that it looks like you chose wiggles as someone to be suspicious of and then added reasons later, because i dont think given his single post and the reasons you mention it would genuinely make you think he is scum. im saying u scum brah.

@DrH if you get a chance can you tell me why im on your scum list?

also i want to renew my poke on VA. I'm very much unsatisfied with the extent to which he's talked about setup and policy and not the more important things like reads and interactions. So VA A CHALLENGE can you write a case for why VE is either town or scum? Or replace VE with someone else if you want to but I want you to put some more reasoning into the thread.

He's put something of a spotlight on himself, and with my read, I don't think he's a good target for the lynch today.

Dr. H, would you mind explaining your read on Oatsmaster a little more clearly for me, please? Is it basically just that Oats is quick to agree with you about who scum are in PM, but doesn't follow through with it in thread? So, there's a discrepancy between what's happening in thread and PM land? Based on the PMs you shared talking about Tofu, Oats seems somewhat undecided about what he thinks of Tofu, not entirely convinced that he's scum, as you say. In thread though, he was more adamant about Tofu than he was in PMs, which looks to be the opposite of what you're saying. What was the time period of those PMs?

Do you have any PMs where Oats talks about VE?

I'm not sure if I agree that there's something wrong with what he was saying about Yamato, it's not that he disagrees with Yamato's conclusions (You being town and VE being scum), but more that he disagrees with his behaviour regarding those conclusions. I do agree that he seems like he's acting very tentative in his PMs with you though. Why is that?

My read on you was based mostly off of your first post, and not as much your second. I don't disagree with what you're saying about people, so much as how you went about your accusations. For example, I didn't think you were scummy because you thought Oat's first post was scummy, it was because you thought he was scummy, but spent a paragraph going back and forth saying that you thought he was scummy, but might be wrong. If you think he's scummy, you should be straightforward and say so, because making excuses just makes it look like you're looking for a way out if he flips town after.

It also looked bad, because you didn't take a strong decision to actually pursue him. You wrote a paragraph about how we should use PMs to scumhunt, but then don't actually take the opportunity to do so. Talking about what you might do doesn't accomplish anything for town, it just makes it look like you're contributing when you're not. That's the other part of where my suspicion came from.

Posting from phone so will be brief but since vivax has only posted his weird rp thing about me and I think VE is scum you are the best person for me to engage with. I have a history specifically of always thinking oats is scummy, that makes me doubt my own reads on him, I feel like that's a good reason to equivocate but if I'm gonna draw shit for being honest maybe I'll just keep it to myself in the future. And I still think I made the right decision to not pm oats given he was in pm contact with some of the most active and best townies already in drh and Ryan.

Can you look at my filter for my accusations/suspicions towards other people than oats and tell me what you think, do they support the me-being-scum narrative.

In other news finding out that malongo is not a newbie makes me way more suspicious of his lack of content. Just throwing that out there.

@hapa: I was referring to my first post in the thread, where I called oats scummy for aggressively demanding that people produce scum reads like seven posts into the game. I called him "scummy" rather than "scum" but that's a semantic difference.

Btw an update: after looking through his filter again, he's no longer one of my top scum reads ATM, he's still silly aggressive but he's engaging and updating his reads enough and nothing in his filter super-pings my radar after those first few posts.

I stick to my opinion that S & B is scum, and I think that his first post is all you need to catch him. From a PM with the other guy:

Show nested quote +
In the specifics, as I should already have mentioned, his post looks forced, lengthy. He touches on a variety of topics showing a certain intent of stretching the amount of content he writes about them.
Especially the "noob player" one hit me as scummy. I see no motivation to write about that stuff unless you look specifically for things to talk about with the sole purpose of talking about something. Add his early apologies for inactivity to it as a cherry on top.
In a game where many hadn't posted at the time your own inactivity shouldn't be a huge concern for you, it is a nice strategy for scum to adopt though (albeit being often ineffective), but since mostly it comes at no cost, there is no harm in scum trying to gain leeway by claiming to be busy.

I kinda had half a feeling to post a list too but I feel like I should stick to what's relevant: Talking about scum.

S & B has clearly put in more effort since, and I don't see anything scummy in his posts since the first (but I'll surely reread them to make sure). If he's scum he's currently putting in effort in a way that doesn't suggest he could be. That doesn't automatically undo the previous reasons, too often have I fallen for the mistake of lessening the importance of earlier actions as the game progresses (which I think is a general fallacy everyone is subject to).

Other guy who looks bad is SlOosh for his defensive reactions and lack of followup. I'll be up for lynching him and encourage him to post more ASAP.
To put it simply: I don't see any intention of finding scum in his posts yet, but he reacts quite happily to accusations.

I be readin' more now.
Any questions to me should be directed to constable Guido first.

okay i get that you didnt like my first post. it wasn't a great post, although i think there were good reasons for everything i said in there. specifically, if anyone has been following my other ongoing game they should see that i've been taking a lot of flak for inactivity, i thought i would try and head that off but it clearly hasn't worked (also this game is much easier to be active in because of the post limit).

But i've tried to discuss these points with wiggles and explain where i was coming from, do you have any comment on that?

is there even a point in trying to engage with you given that you're continuing to critique my first post and ignoring everything else i've done since then, but i'm still apparently your main top scum read?

also @ace and layabout the thing about malongo is that he's posted multiple times at very different times, showing that he's been following and reading the thread, but he's never actually engaged the game or who is mafia or who he thinks we should kill or any of that meaty stuff.

that said, what do you two think of VE?

Okay so here I am again.

First, I saw some people being like "why in the world would anyone vote VE after his claim?"

Basically, I only had a few minutes (my gf was like, "are you playing another mafia game? I need you to help with this stuff") and I decided to vote for the person who I thought had been scummiest all day. I voted right after this post from layabout:
On July 18 2013 09:44 layabout wrote:
For a 24 player game we have a vote's spread pretty thinly:

votes
sloosh: 5 raynpelikoneet VayneAuthority HiroPro kushm4sta VisceraEyes
VE: 3 FirmTofu yamato77 slOosh
snb:2 Vivax gumshoe

I felt more confident in VE being scum than sloosh based on their posting, and I wanted more time to try and figure out sloosh in pms by getting him to talk about reads. So I voted VE.

Now, looking through what happened after i left the thread. First, there's the drH-firmtofu "steaming pile". Makes me think drH is town, I don't think it likely that a scum could fake that kind of emotional drive. On the other hand, i don't see anything between them to make me think firmtofu is town. In fact, given
I exaggerated this statement and said DrH had a strong town read on slOosh so as to elicit a response. DrH responded in kind so I pursued him further.

from tofu, the whole thing begins to seem like tofu baiting drh into raging. per drh, this has apparently been a strategy of scumteams before - apparently newb scum were "assigned" to bait him? So here's a question - Tofu, why did you keep having this same argument with drH? Was it really a good use of your time?

Something I really don't like is that people apparently policy voted VE because of his claim. I mean, I don't think his claim was a good reason to not lynch him. Claiming is just something that VE does, it's not a reason that he's scum.

So that means Ace and Layabout.

Layabout at least had other reasons for suspecting VE, and it wasn't a pure policy vote. (he attacked VE's push on sloosh and his reasons for voting malongo). So okay. Although it is weird that someone who's played as many games as Layabout doesn't know how America works. but whatever.

Ace is a different story, though, his vote was a pure policy vote:
On July 18 2013 23:51 Ace wrote:
I voted for VE because I felt like it. Was going to unvote and thats why I asked if he really claimed. When I see that 2 people are silly enough to claim Day 1 I just resign the guy to his fate. We've been through this and he should know that move is bad for Town and we know he is capable of fake claiming. Add in rayne's claim and Scum know who is not the cop or doctor, and either can get lynched for lying in the future if Town. Bad plays but hey I'm not even reading the thread anyway.

My problem isn't just that he hasn't posted any of his own reads, that could be explained by replacing in (although this thread is pretty short due to the post limit, so it should be easier to replace into). It's that Ace was drifting through pushing a policy lynch, without even engaging the alignment of the guy he was voting for, and now is focusing on that policy question again after the flip.
This is Ace refusing to engage the town and pushing his usual scum agenda.
On April 29 2012 14:09 strongandbig wrote:

This is from Ace's Mafia Manifesto:

Deny information - never give the town a damn thing. Whatever you know keep it yourself unless it furthers your win condition. Don't volunteer it if you don't have to. Don't even talk about it. If you are about to be lynched and the town asks you for information evaluate if you REALLY think it'll save you. It won't? Die without saying a word. Don't talk about anything. Don't talk to anyone unless it's to taunt them and make them emotional. They can't find your allies if you don't give them a clue.

Read that and think to yourself, does this or does it not sound like how Ace is playing right now?

So unless Ace starts substantially engaging and stops focusing on policies and simple dichotomies (see nuclear winter, where he just flipped scum, for another example of him doing the same thing), I'm calling him scum.

And ask yourself, why would anyone who wants town to win say this:

Does this sound like a townie to you? How many players in here have been falsely accused before and thought "Yeah, he makes a good point. People should listen to him!"

Nobody.

The same arguments I made in that post - that FirmTofu referred to as valid - are the same points I kept referring to ad nauseum, which he later calls irrational, emotional, nonsense. In fact - no one else in the thread is even buying them as valid! So in fact - FirmTofu is the sole person who agreed with my case against FirmTofu in the first place! Yet, as time goes on, he continues to insist my arguments hold no merit, that I am a liar, etc!

If I am a liar - how am I town?

If you look at all of his big posts in this thread - they lead to nothing and the motivations behind them are unclear or disjointed. This is not the same town FT I read in NWM.

Couple that with his first post at the beginning of the game and his motivation is clear - to be nonconfrontational and look as townie as possible. Rather than destroying my points (which have no way of being valid or correct if he is a townie - not to mention he says they are valid one minute and then continues to argue against them, which is ridiculously suspicious) he disengages and wastes his posts casting doubt on me. What is the point of casting doubt on me if you don't even believe I'm mafia?

It's so easy to sit back and say "You guys are dumb for lynching VE!!!!!" knowing as scum he's going to lynch town, but you didn't make an effort to push the lynch around to someone else. I screamed my face off trying to get somebody to vote for this guy with me and all FT does is sit back and let it happen, reap in the town cred. It's ridiculous!

all the "he said she said" about the sloosh read was getting lost in the noise, but if you boil the case down to "his play is different from his town game", "he's contradicting himself for no reason", and "he didn't try to swing the lynch off of a person he thought was town" it gets a lot more convincing to me.

"If you want to be useful answer me this, What do you think of S@B and his post flip distinction of those who voted because of Ve's claim and those who voted in spite of it (him being in this second category which is supposedly less bad according to him)

Uhm, I read SnB's post regarding his vote on VE. It didn't make a lot of sense to me... I would've accepted I was "busy" with my girlfriend and didn't check the thread before lynch. But instead he sticks to saying he wants to lynch VE, and claiming didn't change that. I mean, wat? -> "I mean, I don't think his claim was a good reason to not lynch him. Claiming is just something that VE does, it's not a reason that he's scum. "

@SnB - So uh, did you want to lynch VE or not after knowing he claimed? xD

gum I would say SnB looks scummy if he's had a record of playing some games (I don't like passing judgement on weird behavior if it's new players or chez). I didn't really get any content out of his posts, like pointing out Ace policy lynching. Felt like he got suspected, backed off, got some people back on his side, and then went back to his old ways.

I wanted to lynch VE and his claim didn't change my mind. His role claim in no way added new information about his alignment. How is that hard to understand?

Anyway voting tofu. The case is good enough that I don't need to 100% believe the cop claim to at least vote tofu for now.

Which case do you like most?

What arguments do you find particularly persuasive?

Asking this cause I'm interested in knowing how your read evolved and based on what arguments.

@ Rayn

Didn't notice the cop claim when I wrote that post. I'm however very distrusting of ace. I prefer to wait for Tofu first and then work through his posts again before giving a judgment.

Specifically, two arguments drh made that I at first ignored cause I didn't really focus on the specifics of the arguments he was making, I had been just filing their whole interaction away as rage and stubbornness.

- drh's meta comparison of this game to nuclear winter, where tofu flipped town; especially the comparison of the first big post tofu makes in each game
- tofu starts off saying drh "made good points" about him then calls the same points lies when drh doesn't back off

I thought there was a third good point - Drh also attacked tofu for not doing enough to keep a townie (VE) from being lynched but i just went back and read that part of tofu's filter and he didnt actually have a townread on ve plus he did tell people to get off him, so this point isn't actually as good as I thought it was. But I feel like those first two arguments are independent of the actual substance of the "you-said-this-no-I-didn't" that caused me to disregard their interaction day1.

Did you find anything you find scummy that no one else noticed yet?

Can you find me an example for the second point?
What do you think is the difference in first post that makes him specifically scum?

tofu questions:
1. no. i saw a decent case that matched a claimed cop check. although i was the one to doubt the cop check, the fact that the case was decent and agreed with it was enough for me to vote.

2. not sure what you mean by an example since drh has already laid it out, but tofu using language like " The points against me are completely valid and you should all definitely look at them." and then calling drh "inflammatory" and "emotional" sounds like a transition from appeasement to discrediting when appeasement didn't work. but yeah if you're trying to get me to admit that i didn't write the tofu case then fine.

or do you not agree with drh's characterization of tofu? cause that would be good to know about, you could share it with the thread.

3.

This is a closed setup

Because this setup is closed, we have to make sure we do not make any unnecessary assumptions that center around speculation about the roles. Speculation is largely a waste of time given the amount of information provided in the OP, so we should stick to the basics. Additionally, we definitely should not be directing blue roles that we aren't even sure exist.

Big Plays: If you think of some mastermind play that you think will fool mafia and confuse them, please don't use it. As brilliant as your plan may be, a closed setup has too many variables to account for and your plan could potentially confuse the town more than the mafia.

Lying: If you are town, DO NOT lie. If all of town follows this rule, we can separate town and mafia into two distinct categories, liars and non-liars, respectively. We can lynch liars without fear of them flipping town AS LONG AS every town member strictly adheres to this rule.

The Traitor:
On May 29 2013 12:27 Ver wrote:
All the town knows is this:

5 Mafia
1 Traitor

5 mafia, 1 traitor. Anyone up for some math?
5/24=0.20833333333
(5+1)/24=0.25

The one traitor adds about 4% to the strength of the team. As the game progresses, the denominator gets lower. Assuming we don't get insanely lucky, the percentage of mafia will increase over time. The influence of the traitor will start to compound and he will become a greater threat.

We obviously need to keep an eye out for the traitor, but specifically hunting for him in the early days will be a waste of resources, in my opinion.

How to catch the traitor!
The traitor might get antsy and try to drop a few hints for mafia to pick up (to try and join them). We need to stay vigilant to find these subtle hints and make sure we call them out as soon as we see them.

PMs:
I'm thinking that we should choose our best town reads as PM targets. I'm somewhat unfamiliar with this mechanic, so if a more experienced player can give his thoughts about it, that would be great. This goes without saying, but remember to choose your pm targets wisely! This means NOT wasting both of your choices on Day 1 based on weak reads.

Post Count Limit:
We have a moderately strict 20 post limit during day. This means absolutely NO one-liner posts. Try to make longer posts that include multiple quotes. Respond to multiple points simultaneously. If you want to give your reads, do it all in one post. We need people to also save posts to ensure they can respond to accusations should they be accused. Plan ahead. Most of this stuff should be obvious, so I'm not going to beat a dead horse.

Alright, that's all I've got for now. Let's have a good, clean game. GL HF!

MegaPost - all fluff - no substance. The attitude is different, he's very flowery and fluffy whereas in Nuclear Winter he more or less gets to the point in every post.

the only new things in oats's filter since D1 are his message chain with VE (short, null) and a bunch of one-liners (also null). i would like to see a real comment on the ace/ft/drh situation (especially the fakeclaim) but i see no reason to update my read.

@vivax kill me for shooting ace if you think it makes me scum. But killing me because of balance is among the dumber things you could say to support your tunnel of me based on my first post. It's a closed setup, so we have no idea what kind of roles scum has or what is or isn't reasonable for town.

@marv what do you mean it doesn't make sense for town to shoot ace. He was actively refusing to engage in any way that could either help find scum or show us he's town. And he was actively disrupting and confusing the thread and advancing the scum agenda. I know how hard it is to get ace lunched, and I had a bullet, so I shot him.

Scum motivated because you don't want to be on a town mislynch wagon, and you create more chaos by moving around votes like that. Just because layabout could have done something as scum and didn't, doesn't mean he can't be scum. I've seen scum lynched D1 (Catch 22 mafia) by one vote, and scum could have easily switched but they didn't, and then the rest of the game the scum skated by on town cred because "why wouldn't scum just switch their vote" was so strong.

Do you have some town tells on layabout or something?

Also, what do you think of the new Ace / FirmTofu stuff?

Re the layabout case you posted. I think that the stuff about wording and inherent guilt is interesting but not conclusively a scum tell. It seems like the key argument is that layabout set up his vote based on the VE claim but switched to mz. This is weird sure but how is it scum motivated? Why wouldn't layabout as scum just leave his vote on ve?

Original Message From slOosh:
That's currently where I'm looking right now. Votes were flying around because everything was so rushed and chaotic, and the mz wagon came out of nowhere. I don't recall any meaningful effort into lynching mz during the day, so you have to point out where you think scum were trying to build his wagon. At face value seems unlikely that a last minute voteswing would land on scum though.

it's a bit too late for the lurker lynch question to matter, so how about instead can you comment on the late push for a MZ lynch? do you think that it was townies fighting townies (his vs ve's wagons) or do you think that mz is scum and scum were trying to keep the lynch off him?

What the heck what kind of questions are these?

Vivax's last paragraphs are clear about how you just muse on masoning Oats but don't actually take a stance. What's your stance on Oats?

Nothing substantial out of VE yet but it's still early in the day to tell, especially with him.

Also what happened to your call out of VA? Are you masoned with him or something?

my stance on oats should be pretty obvious. my gut reaction was that his early game was really scummy, but i dont trust my gut with him specifically. Is there something scummy about that? I have a history of getting him wrong.

I really don't think it's too early in the day to tell with VE. Specifically, what about his attack on wiggles? It looks to me like he decided to be suspicious of wiggles and then made up reasons afterwards.

As for VA, i'm not masoned with him, i just thought i would let him have some time to respond to my call out, and then I forgot to follow up... getting back on that.

but srs talk about ve in a substantial way plzkthx

It is entirely possible that VE has played games with Mr. Wiggles before and is using meta to base his read. I do agree that he is focusing on talking about people no one really cares about right now ... I'm still mulling how he is going to use his remaining posts. Giving DrH 5 posts seems like an easy way to feign contribution without actually contributing.

Any thoughts on the new Oats / DrH / FirmTofu stuff?

I guess you must not like that I have drh three of my posts first lol.

Don't think drh is scum, especially not for the "lie" mentioned given. It seems like someone misunderstanding drh and then being stubborn about it.

For for tofu that stubbornness is not alignment indicative IMO, townies are stubborn sometimes (I have been) but scum do it on purpose a lot.
As for drh's case on tofu, I do find that kind of weird - "you're scum for attacking me when I defended you" seems like a pretty silly argument which is weird out of drh but not enough to make me think he is scum.

As for oats. It seems like a lot of the case on him is about the pm logs so let me get to my comp and read those before I comment in detail.

Say some stuff about the possibility of a lurker lynch today. Good/bad? Necessary? Scum favored?

Yeah so sup? haven't heard from you in a while. wanted to follow up on the oats question, like I posted in the thread i don't think he's scum anymore. the only thing out there is the "difference between pms and the thread" but I don't really see it and his thread stuff looks much more townie to me than it did at the start of the day. not ready to call him sure town yet but he's probably town.

its kind of weird that oats would try to donate posts when he's already running out. not sure if i like that, there are plenty of people who aren't in danger of hitting the post limit.

stopped replying when it became clear that he wasn't really trying to persuade people he's town anymroe

You are accusing Ace of trolling basically. Show me a quote where he is trolling to the extent that he deserves a vig shot.

You thought FT looked at least a little scummy at the time. In fact you had voted him earlier in the day. You never declare that you have a townread on FT.
How do you shoot Ace without a townread on FT??? obviously they aren't both scum

this is dumb. of course they could both be scum, but more generally i don't let connection theories between unflipped players influence my thought process. when i was thinking about whether ace was scum i didn't worry about whether or not tofu was scum.

but to go a step further - i didn't and don't think ace fakeclaimed to test ft's reaction. he didn't even claim the cop check was on ft. and he made his claim obviously fake.

Why would I PM ace before shooting him. Then he might be able to stop me.

@koshi what makes you so sure I'm scum that you're willing to ignore the mz/Marv dt check to lynch me? Like, seriously no one has made a case on me this entire game except vivax, and that was vivax tunneling into his snap read on me based on my first post (and spoiler alert vivax tunneling is something that happens all the time, and has happened to me before).

I shot ace for a couple of reasons that no one has argued with yet - one is protown (he was playing like scum and I thought he was scum, but he's impossible to lynch) and, true, one is alignment neutral (I like shooting ace) but no one has said yet why that makes me scum.

Ima do a little analysis now. In the sloosh/Marv convo, sloosh claimed that they knew Marv was SK from a cop check. This gives us four possibilities:
1. scum actually do have a role cop check on Marv as SK, as they appear to imply in the sloosh/Marv convo. Best move for town is to lunch Marv and reduce anti town KP. Regardless of whether the 2kp/night so far has been due to scum only having one KP as someone suggested or if we've been lucky with KP overlap/protective roles, best move if we have the SK is to get rid of him.
2. scum knew about the mz/Marv "different" result that was floating around pm land, and that neither of them is scum. In this scenario, presumably either sloosh contacted both Marv and mz, or they read Marv as SK. In this case whether we lynch Marv or mz depends on who we think is more likely to be the SK. If the "different" result was due to a framer, I doubt that scum would have initiated the conversation with Marv, I don't see any benefit to doing that instead of just letting town kill both of them.
3. Marv is scum and the convo was faked. This could have been a response to knowing about the parity check, although I don't see why that would be a better response than just trying to lynch mz, either way the check leads to Marv getting lynched and the "when" just depends on getting people to lynch mz first. I feel like getting us to lynch mz first would be easy if Marv actually started giving a shit, and given how egotistical he can get about his scum play I doubt that would have been an issue. I don't think that is the case. Still, this is a possible scenario where we should obviously lynch Marv.
4. Marv is town, mz is scum, and the convo was initiated in response to scum finding out about the parity check. This is the scenario where we should obviously lynch mz. Still, this is a very high-risk strategy from scum, since it relies on Marv posting the conversation and not having it make him "confirmed" or gain massive town cred. It's also possible but I think this scenario is also unlikely

So here's my conclusion. I think it seems improbable that either of mz or Marv is actually scum. So I think we should lynch Marv for a couple reasons. (1) his play this game doesn't match either his scum or town play. Unless he's been way more active and involved in pms than he has here, it doesn't match his town play (which sometimes looks scummy but always looks leadery) or his scum play (which is quite active as well, and very ego-driven). Therefore, I think he is neither. (2) there's a possibility the scum do have a rolecop and that's why they contacted Marv, in which case they're giving us free information and it would be a shame not to use it.

So ##vote: marv

Also inb4 "oh he's hunting SK not scum" well what I'm actually doing is hunting for the most reasonable anti town person I can get you all to lunch instead of mislynching me and trying to work with the cop claim we have so fuck you too. At least I'm still trying despite people in this game being stupid and calling me scum for no good reason, unlike some people in this town.

Your faces are full of bullshit. What am I supposed to be doing when people are trying to kill me without even telling me what I can defend myself against?

Oats fakeclaiming.

Two parity cops is way more unlikely than three town vigs.

Why check firmtofu night one as parity cop? He was neither clear town nor (as of n1) likely to be flipped anytime soon, that was well before anyone started listening to drh. Checking him wouldn't resolve his alignment (obviously) nor would it give a good basis for knowing the alignment of future checks. Oats just picked someone suspicious who had flipped without thinking like a parity cop

(Also even if oats is telling the truth, ft was a way more reasonable frame than mz night one, since ft was a great target for a normal cop, but a terrible one for a parity cop. Either way you look at it layabouts check is way more reliable than this oats bs)

Fakeclaiming at lylo for the win when we have a check from a confirmed and flipped cop. And you sheep are gonna fall for it. Humorously bad claim.

"Forgot to check night two" is a good one though, I'll have to remember that.

So I have two problems with the setup this game.

First, I feel like the scum team was underpowered. IMO any setup where town has more KP than mafia is problematic, plus there's the protective bodyguard role. It didnt come up this game because we bluesniped gumshoe, but I feel like any game where scum only has one KP should never have protective roles, since it's already hard for scum to keep town from snowballing around important/good townies.
Then there's the presence of the investigation roles, without any anti-investigative roles for scum. True, they didnt work like normal parity cops who can make a chain of checks, but I still think the two gimped cops are better for town than one normal parity cop since it's harder for scum to kill both of them before they hit on at least one scum player.
So we have a town with two vigs, a protective role, and two investigative roles, against a scum team which pretty much had only anti-scum power roles. Silencer doesn't help much and, if used on an active town leader, basically confirms them; the only way to use it to help confirm scum is if you already have a scum player who is an active town leader, and that should not be a prerequisite for using one of your few power roles. Then we have the pardoner who can't pardon scum, and the dayvig. Those are powerful in a numbers sense, it's true, but they both hurt the scum team to use (have to out the dayvig, have to save a townie).

So in itself, this is a difficult setup for scum. Especially given the SK, who had stronger powers than the entire scum team (KP + bulletproof + pardoner for either team). I would argue that a bulletproof SK with regular KP is much more suited to a larger game where scum have multiple KP rather than a game like this one with only 1 nightly KP. Usually SK has to work with town to get scum lynched, but if the SK can kill scum as fast as scum can kill town the SK can pretty much win while ignoring the thread.

All that said, in itself I wouldn't argue that this setup should inherently be rejected, although I do think the SK should be changed either by having his bp be one-shot or by reducing his KP to, say, three per game.

The problem comes when you add that it's a pm game. Pm games are inherently stronger for town; I've played in 3 I think, and scum has not won any of them. While it's been said truly that it's hard for one individual to figure out one other individual in pms (like mason partners) when a whole game had access to them it puts a different kind of pressure on the scum team to be active in multiple ways and to interact more, which leads to them getting caught. So it's the combination of a really tough setup plus pms that makes me feel like scum never had a chance to begin with.

My second problem is with the way the roles were chosen, not from a balance perspective but from a design perspective. The roles feel really gimmicky. The two cops, for example, feel like a "test of how town can deal with weird cop claims".

The silent pardoners were apparently a mistake so I'll ignore that, but having three pardoners and having the anti town ones unable to pardon their own factions feels like a gimmick as well.
Then there's the JK role, which I don't understand. Someone said that it didn't stop KP on its target, but if that is true then (a) it appears that the actual JK didn't know it since they tried to protect drh, and (b) it appears to only be useful against town since all scum's powers were day-use. Unless it stops its target from using scum KP. If it either protects against or stops the use of KP, then it's obviously overpowered in a game with only one scum KP, and if it doesn't then it's a power role like silence which only hurts its own team.

The problem with having gimmicky roles is that we were already trying out two huge setup gimmicks in this game, the post count restrictions and the limited pm network. I would really love to at an actually normal game with post count restrictions, but this game wasn't it.

i disagree - the sk balances the game from the town's side (town would be way op without the sk) but it doesn't balance the game from the scum side (the sk existing doesn't increase scum's chances of winning since if they get ahead he will cooperate with town).

It's true that modkilling town to death is not great, but then it's Adam losing the game for his team vs the hosts winning it for his team. So that probably should have happened. Not really the important point here though, although Adam should get a ban for it

That is true

Like kush if you want to have what you consider an "accurate" record then just put it in your profile and anyone who cares (aka you) can look at it there.

In the end the town still didn't win. So it's wrong to say I handed them the game. It was basically giving the mafia the game versus making it a bit more difficult for the mafia to win. I wouldn't say a modkill is losing it for your team, losing a game is making bad plays and just sheeping along blatantly bad lynches. Getting modkilled is ruining the game for everyone, mafia gets unearned victory and it kind of shits on the integrity of the game.

And I said it before, as a host you are inevitably going to fuck up eventually, it's how you handle the fuckup that matters. You are faced with tough calls and have to make decisions that aren't going to make everyone happy. I'm sorry if you/kush find that unacceptable. However lets point out, it still wasn't enough to get the town a win. In the end the SK won

Also it was possible for the SK to die at night, it was just exceptionally difficult. He wasn't bullet proof he just had two night lives. No one ever actually attacked him. Alternatively, you could just lynch him if you are paying enough attention to catch him. However he did play pretty well, I think it took Ver until day 3 to figure him out.

yeah, okay you're right about the modkill vs replacement in this case.
