War strips away the veneer of respectability that is carefully layered onto the fragile existence to blot out reality. In the end, the veneer is nothing but a marker for where to dive the graves. Two worlds, one fake and one real, come together and clash violently, leaving behind only corpses, the vague taste of blood in the mouth, and shot nerves. The years pass by now, in 2s and 3s, and life seems less cheap than before, but still-- The war changed him. His son, who has known only peace, seems strange to him. He can't recall becoming a father, he can't recall the shame of finding himself suddenly alone in a full house. He can barely call these conversations talks, because they are smothered in a wet blanket of silence. All attempts to pull back the blanket lay bare the endless incompetence of his fatherhood, a distant attempt at closeness that only accentuates his inability to feel anything through the calluses he has grown. However young his heart my shine beneath its manacles, it is forever bound. Perhaps his son is right to hate him. One day, as the hours draw long and his desk morphs from the status symbol it once meant to the chain it is now, he hears the news. His back bent with the weight of paperwork and hard afternoons and long nights of writing, his hand clawed with the grip of a quill rather than a wand, he is no longer the man he was the last time Britain was in danger. The facts, however, are unrelenting: Voldemort is back, and the Death Eaters once again move against the wizarding world. No-one is safe any more, and the peace that has held for almost 2 decades has now been shattered, rend in twain by the Dark Lord. He hears a woman scream at the news. He is suddenly deeply aware that his own heart is pounding, pounding like it hasn't since the last time he went toe to toe with death holding only his wand. He should feel panic. He should feel fear. He should feel sorrow. Instead, he only feels alive, alive as he hasn't been in over a decade. His wand is in his hand and he is on his feet. His back is straight and his eyes forward. Qatol as Gilderoy Lockheart has been silenced! Incognito as James Potter has been slain! Foolishness as Lily Potter gave her life for her son! Welcome to Day 1!
