There are no coaches in this game right now. Therefor I'll answer your questions:
We get information by talking to each other. Just be active, ask some questions etc. And yes, there is no other mechanism right now.

While I agree that I'd be a horrible mayor or sheriff, I disagree when it comes to putting someone well known in the spot. Especially someone that we know can play scum well. I'd much rather have a noob scum mayor than have the possibility of a experienced scum mayor. A noob scum mayor would be easier for the majority to detect.

From my experience of the last games, we are pretty good in finding townies and pretty bad when it comes down to decide between scum and aweful.

But how do you do that on the first day? I can see getting a good read on the next few days, but wouldn't it become difficult on the first? It may be my noobness speaking, but I'm not sure it would be wise to trust a first day read.

@Unsmart first days from my experience are typically hard and uneventful unless someone goes out of their way to make it so :D.

Electing new players is a waste of a mayor since this game is no pms. The purpose of electing someone mayor is to protect an important townie against night kills and get scum lynched day 1. If we elect someone which we have no previous info about his play, we basically waste the mayor's purpose, unless we get extremelly lucky and the guy turns out to be great at this game despite being his first time. Also veterans have a lot of previous history to which you can compare and try to determine their alignments, while new players are wild cards and will be much more likely of getting lynched by atracting suspicion onto themselves due to inexperience as town. As scum new player who gets elected mayor will have a whole team to back them up and go over their posts (since scum will most likely try to protect their position) and they have no previious history on tl, making it extremelly dificult to identify their alignments.

The reason I'm a good choice for mayor is because I've played a fair bit of games and everyone that plays here knows my style. I normally have pretty good reads all game long and this game I'll be very active due to the sheer number of players. If I'm town I'll be a threat to the scum team, so making me invunerable to hits is a pretty good deal. If I'm scum I'll be very easy to identify due to my activity (so veteran players will have a pretty good grasp of my alignment) and my empty profile, so clues pointing to me should be fairly easy to identify.

I want you to vote me for mayor. Now as the very sensible and engaged townie you are, you will of course ask me "Why would I want you for mayor, I hardly even know you. What could you possibly have to offer that would convince me to vote you for mayor?" And I will answer.

I have the very useful talent to be able to tell bad townie play apart from scummy play. In this game there are a lot of people that no one has ever played with before. New players have a habit of making silly mistakes that people might interpret as them being scum, but I am very good at separating silly newbies from malicious scum. I might not the best scum hunter here, but I can see a bad lynch on a newbie townie from miles/kilometers away and I will do everything I can to prevent those from happening. If you are afraid that you might make a silly mistake because this is your first game, and scum will jump on you for it and try to get you lynched, you need to vote me for mayor.
I am very active. I stay active in all games and I will be active in this game too. I will not just disappear and I will answer any question you have for me. If you don't feel like my answer is sufficient, then feel free, feel obliged, to ask me again and I will answer you until you are satisfied. This makes me very transparent. There are a lot of people in this game who have played with me many times before and they have become very good at reading me, there is no way I could hide as scum when I stay active. If you are afraid that the mayor will just retire from the game and not give you any content to analyse him by, if you are afraid that the mayor will become arrogant and not feel like he has to answer to anybody, you need to vote me for mayor.
I am lynchable. As mayor you will become immune to night kills while bodyguards are alive which will probably mean for the majority of the game. This means that an unruly mayor cannot get killed by a vigilante at night. This is why you don't want someone on this post who is unlynchable. "But, who IS unlynchable?" you ask. There are a lot of the veterans here who have a past of almost never getting lynched, they are good at manipulating crowds to not vote for them, and if they are in office there is nothing a vigilante could do about it. If one of those somehow got into office they would be impossible to get rid of. During day1 I am going to convince you that I am town, but for those of you who have a nagging voice at the back of your head whispering "Well he sure seems townie, but just maybe ...", there is no need to worry. If I am scum I will be exposed and I will be lynched. If you are afraid of how bad it would be for town to have an unlynchable and unkillable scum leading the town as mayor, then you need to vote for me.

Now that I have told you about my traits and abilities at this game, I will tell you what I want to use my position as mayor for. This is a little guide on how to play this game for newbies and veterans alike, though there are different things different people should be aware of.

For the newbies
If you feel like you are new at this game this is a list of dos and don'ts that you need to read.

Do try to read some of the awesome guides on how to play mafia there is on this forum. This post contains a lot of guides and analyses made by some of the best mafia players this forum has seen. Also on this forum, Ver's TL Mafia XXX analysis is stickied. Read that.
Do not come up with crazy plans. At the beginning of a mafia game, many veterans will say things that are purposely scummy just to get the game going. This doesn't mean that they are scum, but only veterans should ever try to do this.
The game starts when you get your PM. Do not fool around after this or people will get suspicious of you. The miranda warning is valid in mafia too: "Anything you say or do can and will be held against you in a ~~court of law~~ game of mafia."
Think before you speak. The worst excuse for looking scummy is "I didn't think about that". You need to think about what you say before you hit that post button, or else you will start to look scummy.
Speak. Be honest and play the game, it's a lot of fun! If you get in a sticky situation don't try to lie your way out of it, it's not the first time a newbie has done something that wasn't too smart. We'll figure your alignment out anyway, as long as you stay honest.

For everybody
This is a game with 80 players in it. If people just spam away we are going to break all thread records on this subforum. This is why it is very important that everybody does the following in this game, so that the thread will not be a huge mess by night1.

Do not post one liners. One liners can be good and they can be important and telling, but don't post one liners if they can wait until you actually have enough to say to write a larger post.
Do not interrogate people for pages in a row. Tunneling can be a great tool for scum hunting but if 80 people started uncontrollably spamming questions this website would crash, and even worse, it would get harder to properly scum hunt.
Be clear and concise with your posts. Say what you want and get on with the game. There are probably a bunch of people here whose first language isn't english, this is not a problem but try to make your posts easy to read and not overly long. Try to remember proper punctuation and capitalization, they make posts very much easier to read, and they make sure people do not misunderstand you.
Post your reads and remember to include your analysis. Reads without analysis is void and we don't want the thread to be full of one liners asking for an analysis that should have been there in the first place. We want your reads, we demand your reads, but not without an analysis so put that right there in the same post as your reads.
Don't overly rely on clues. The clues serve as a pointer to where you might find scum, but if you find a clue referring to someone, you always need to do analysis of them. A clue in itself is not damning evidence.

As mayor I will encourage everybody to stick to these guidelines. They are all good for town. I will also enforce the following policies:

Lynch-all-lurkers - If you are caught lurking in this thread, refusing to share your opinions to muddy up people's read on you, you get lynched (or more likely you get lurker baned).
Lynch-all-liars - If you are caught lying in this thread, you get lynched.
Lynch-all-scum - This is the most important one and takes precedence over the other policies, if you are being scum in this thread, you get lynched.

Now you have read this post, you know who I am and what I stand for. I am the best bid for mayor that this town has to offer. Vote prplhz for mayor. Thank you.

Versus other veterans, what would distinguish you from them in being able to articulate and identify player alignments, especially those with active campaigns to get the mayorship like sinani206. and redFF, who have put forward their experience as well but have not exerted the effort to actually explain why they're good candidates?

What can you say about the fact that if you were just a vanilla goon, and can let your team-mates handle the dirty work of killing townies/blues, that it could not reflect on your record?

Right now, I'm voting for you as mayor because you've been the only person to articulate why your position would enable you to help the town the most, and not rely on track record.

In my experience, you are bad at deflecting bad townie play vs scum play, I remember that from LotR mafia. However, those basic tips on newbie play will go quite a way to encourage player activity.

However I won't vote for you because my experience tells me you don't have what it takes.
