Joe Miller/Deman were way better liked than him and both have said they really regret leaving Riot.
Really, Monte talks the talk about hating Riot, but at the end of the day that's just his brand. He's chosen to define himself as, and/or markets himself as, the anti-authoritarian "fuck riot" guy. That gets him the attention - there's a reason why people talk about him much more than DoA. (It also doesn't carry over to Overwatch, because why would an Overwatch player care about you if all you are is the "fuck Riot" guy?)
So that kind of branding really falls apart if his cause celebre, "Casters are being underpaid", is directly undercut by both Papasmithy and DoA happily accepting that same pay, particularly since I think he and DoA are pretty close personally, much more so than Monte and PapaSmithy.
I mean, Monte is a pretty short-sighted temperamental dude. Like, in the whole REN-TDK thing, a normal person would have just picked Riot over Chris freakin' Badawi, but Monte felt the need to be loyal to Badawi, maybe? And fell on his sword to protect that guy for some reason? So I would think that if DoA had accepted Riot's offer Monte would at the very least be annoyed, if not personally hurt.
Of course this is all just speculation since DoA is getting married and the issue is moot. On one hand, I don't feel any sympathy for Monte at all because I believe the drama and the following consequences are completely self-induced by him. On the other hand, it does bring in an interesting question of how professional LoL casters - especially colour casters which require a great deal of specific game knowledge - can develop and transition their career once a game fades. All of the drama this creates and shitting on Riot is great for Monte's brand. He will probably bring more of that in the future. But still its true to be long term successful in another game this is not enough, you actually have to be good at casting it and the game has to be popular.

Keep in mind that this doesn't mean they are done casting League. Monte and DoA's contracts are solely with OGN and not Riot.

I think it's hilarious that Reddit is still shitting on Tryndamere for donating $10k to charity.
It is actually a good point though. I am not going to examine if the facts provided on Reddit are correct, but I will just assume they are correct, then we know:
1. Marc Merrill donated 10k to a charity in which he is on the board of directors.
2. He has donated at least 10k last year.
With this in mind, this almost seems like an advertisement for his side project - a charity which he contributes to not only in money but also in time.

He donated at least 10k in Jun 2014-Jun 2015, i.e., two years ago.
But, I mean, yeah, no shit he's bringing attention to it. It's a charity he obviously cares deeply about and does good work. Not sure why advertising for it, and hopefully raising awareness about their good work, is supposed to be a bad thing.

Monte didn't actually have any of Badawi's money as far as I have read. He just agreed to consider letting him back in if Riot re-approved him. Considering Riot would have had to re-approve Badawi for him to be involved at all again I think it is pretty meaningless, personally.
I don't blame Monte for being hella salty with Riot. Them forcing him to sell within 5 days likely gave him a hit to his finances larger than the majority of Western people earn in their lives.
I also think at the end of the day it is a loss for eSports how this all played out. You want guys like Monte to be team owners instead of random Venture Capitalists.
I'm also salty LS will be at worlds in his place... Yuck.
I don't think people are shitting on him for donating money, they are shitting on him for being a huge hypocrite and a liar. Its great that he donated money, but it is kind of shitty for him to use that as some sort of pedestal to pin himself up on.
I'm happy he donated the money, seems like a great cause. I think its kind of skeevy of him to use it as some sort of misdirection. I'm more upset about him trying to mislead me than him account sharing one time 4 years ago, personally.

It's not a bad thing to bring it up, but I am just arguing that it's not an actual punishment considering his networth, his stake in that particular charity, and his past donation patterns. Essentially, he is going to donate anyway, but now it's also free PR.

I just can't believe people care about 'eloboosting' that happened 4 years ago.

The only reason people care is because he's one of the co-owners of the company.

Never thought ELO boosting was even a big deal so it does kind of piss me off how people been boned over the years for it while the man at the top doesn't give a shit.

I think you have to be like Richard-Lewis levels of Riot circlejerking to think that Tryn was actually trying to get elo boosted, given that a) the "booster" was on Tryndamere's smurf, and b) he can just manually edit the MMR of his account to be whatever he wants.
It's obviously a case of account sharing, and no one has traditionally ever given a shit about that. It's so over-the-top dramatic to pretend that this is some heinous crime that demands retribution. But hey, he paid up $10k to a charity he works with.

No.
I'd prefer if he just said "hey check out this cool charity" and not tried to use his charity work to address his hypocrisy. It is quite strange how instead of making things about kids needing funding to learn, he is making it about "look how good a person, I Tryndamere, am!". It is kind of pompous and attention seeking and quite frankly unnecessary. It is the subtle difference between being the McDonalds silently funding families to stay with their sick kids through their charity and BP bending over backwards to garner public support any way they can after royally fucking the environment by skirting around best practices to save money by publicly giving money to whomever they can.
It just appears hollow and contrived.
Hundreds of players have had their careers ruined by supporting themselves through ELO boosting. Apparently the only fault they had in doing so was not boosting Tryndamere.

First of all, like I said, this is obviously not a case of elo boosting. There's no evidence of that whatsoever. You'd have to show that they played more than one game, that some kind of payment/consideration was exchanged, that the elo actually got boosted, and a goddamn reason why the CEO of League would try to be "boosting" his smurf.
Second, who had their career ruined by elo boosting in season 2? If that was actually the case, half of all LCS players would be out of a job. And certainly no one has had their career ruined for sharing a smurf account for one game.
Third, he didn't "decide" to pay to a charity - all Riot fines traditionally go to charity. So unless you would have rather him paid the $10k to Riot instead (yeah, that would have gone over well), he did exactly what he would have done had he been an actual LCS player caught boosting in Season 2, which, again, he was not.
Fourth, how is this pompous and attention-seeking? In what more subtle way could he have handled the situation other than a very short tweet saying "I account shared and shouldn't have, so I donated $10,000 to charity"? There was no excuses, no added color, no context or spin, just straight up - I did something that wasn't a big deal at the time but is now, so I'm going to make myself pay $10,000 to a charity even though Riot is obviously not in the business of permabanning anyone that account shared four years ago. Like, that is literally as low-key as he could have been without not telling anyone at all, in which case you'd be right here bitching about how he's above the rules. Did he say "look how good I am"? Did he congratulate himself? Or are you just putting words in his mouth and then getting mad at him for "saying" that?
Fifth, did you really just compare sharing a smurf account for one game to be equivalent to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill?

1) Marc Merill, the president of Riot Games, gets a known and banned ELO booster to duo queue while logged on his smurf account... Umm, that is pretty much textbook ELOboosting. Does it make any sense? No... but clearly it happened. It also doesn't matter how many games as per Riots on rules. Well, I should didn't matter as per Riots old rules before they suspiciously edited them 3 hours ago today. Huh. Interesting. There was a very specific clause in there that said it didn't matter if a rank was actually achieved, and it didn't matter how many games it was. It also said it didn't matter if the intention was to gain ELO, that a higher level player logging on your account and gained ELO that was ELO boosting... this is now gone and it says the specific purpose has to be to gain ELO.
https://support.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/201751834-MMR-Elo-Boosting
Nice of them to cover the bosses tracks like that.
2) How can you prove it was 1 game?
3) Actually, he simply decided to pay a charity. This is kind of like a government official deciding to fine themselves over tax evasion or some shit. It is a total cop out. He probably was going to do it anyway, but this way he gets to get the most possible personal gain out of it. That is why it feels and rings hollow, because the whole act is about him gaining his ulterior motive.
4) How is it not? Do you honestly think Tryndamere feels "punished" by his donation? He came out and said he donated something in a manner that puts all the emphasis on him actually donating the money. Do you think the average person that donates / volunteers to a food bank is out on Instagram and Twitter promoting to thousands of people that they just did that charity work? I would have prefered he didn't say anything at all. And yes I would have been mad anyway, but I would have been less mad and at the end of the day when someone who banned / punished hundreds of thousands of people does the same thing he banned them for... people should be mad.
Don't put words in my mouth, I said it I perceive it as such. I said it comes across as him saying that. Those are different things. I never said he said those things; I said his actions implied them to me.
5) I certainly did not. I compared how he handled this PR situation to how BP handled the PR after that situation.
Honestly, I don't care that he account shared or ELO boosted. I care that he made a big deal about how that stuff ruins the game after he did it. And I am frustrated by hundreds of combined poor decisions made by Riot in a row. It completely kills any trust in the guys word or character for me. Chances are, if he just let it be I would have got over it too, but he came right out and tried to mislead me by giving himself a "fine".
|
I agree with iCanada on this - what Tryndamere did was, in my opinion, insincere.
Ultimately, it was not a punishment, but a pure PR move for his charity project. It really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Didn't CLG get fined and banned from competing in OGN for account sharing?
This isn't a case of eloboosting/account sharing being heinous crimes, it's a case of Riot acting as if they heinous crimes in some situations and completely ignoring it in others.

Pretty sure the harsh penalties for Eloboosting are applied to the providers of the Eloboosting service, not to the clients.
