It has always surprised me how Shen and Nunu are such strong picks on EU despite the pretty big holes in the way they are played there (Shen solo top, defensive jungling Nunu that takes absolutely no advantage of his godly counterjungling kit, etc.).

This is precisely because you end up with underfarmed and especially underleveled ranged AD in the bottom lane. Kass is not nearly as scary when he doesn't have a 2-3 level advantage on your ranged AD.

Kass not really banned/picked anymore at high ELO EU, he's been nerfed relatively recently and his laning sucks+no cc. Malz is always banned tho, but that cos he is insane.

He hits 6 faster.

Shen is put top (instead of mid) because he's pretty safe up there and can farm decently against most champs. Shen is not put bottom because the ranged AD + support bottom lane is religiously enforced on EU. In an extremist, zealous way.

IMO the strongest way to reliably get Shen to 6 without the issues of him giving up a lane when he ults is to run him with a roamer, who can take the lane once Shen hits 6.

I dunno. I just dont like the idea of wasting farm on a pure tank. I mean, if the other team is any good, then they arent even going to target the tank, so why bother getting extra defensive items? Id much rather have that solo go to a tanky dps or a carry, someone who needs farm in order to do their job effectively.

With a taunt duration that is shorter than most champs attack speed. So basically you are arguing that taking an auto attack from a champion is going to kill him and therefore it is worth wasting a solo on him?

I mean, if there are no other options, shen can at least make use of a solo lane. But you really want to say that he is better top than irelia, jarman, or some tanky dps like that? Someone who can absorb more damage and deal more damage? Or just a straight up carry who can KILL the enemy?

Im not buying it.

He's top to have someone farm up who can teleport bottom and win Dragon fights.
Shen typically gets SFC, which is basically the HP and Armor of the base items, and 800 gold that goes into 40 DPS AoE.

If a tank doesn't have enough defense items, a good team WILL actually focus him. Underfarmed tanks explode pretty quickly.

TBH I think that shen top + carrysupport bot is still played on EU just because everyone plays it. High Elo players aren't experimenting that much nowadays TBH, the revolutions occur usually once someone climbed really high in Elo by abusing something and then inspired others to try it out (like Eve, Urgot, Irelia or Teemo). OFC there are exceptions but i feel like high Elo players experimented by themselves way more like 8-12 months ago

Also I agree with Spines - there's nothing worse than seeing underfarmed tank. However I don't think they desperately need solo lane farm

Tanks scale faster in terms of defensiveness than carries do in terms of offensiveness. It costs more for a carry to break a tank then it would cost the tank to nullify a carry, and in a lot of fights, I doubt the carry is going to be attacking someone that's not tanky.

If you are unable to stunlock a Jax who has a rageblade and a gunblade, you're gonna have a very bad day. You simply won't be able to kill him due to how quickly he'll heal from his vamp and spell vamp.
