LOS ANGELES, Calif. – July 22, 2009 -- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. and Legendary Pictures announced today that Sam Raimi has signed on to direct the eagerly-anticipated major motion picture based on Blizzard Entertainment®’s award-winning Warcraft® universe. Raimi has, in the course of his career, clearly demonstrated a genius for developing and adapting existing fictional universes for mainstream audiences while staying true to the spirit of the original content. Raimi directed the Spider-Man trilogy, which has broken box-office records around the world and garnered five Academy Award® nominations. Known for his imaginative filmmaking style, richly drawn characters and offbeat humor, Raimi wrote and directed the cult classic, The Evil Dead and produced 30 Days Of Night. He most recently wrote and directed the supernatural thriller, Drag Me To Hell.
"At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action-packed story," said Raimi. "I am thrilled to work with such a dynamite production team to bring this project to the big screen."
Charles Roven’s producing talents were recently seen with last summer’s blockbuster The Dark Knight, which grossed in excess of $1 billion, was nominated for eight Academy Awards® and won two. His body of work also includes the widely acclaimed Batman Begins and the sci-fi classic 12 Monkeys. Roven, with Atlas producing partner Alex Gartner, will be producing with Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull, Legendary’s Chief Creative Officer Jon Jashni, Raimi and Raimi’s producing partner Joshua Donen. Raimi’s partner, Robert Tapert, will be an Executive Producer and Blizzard Entertainment’s Senior Vice President of Creative Development, Chris Metzen, a Co-Producer.
"Partnering with Sam Raimi exemplifies Legendary's mandate of marrying the highest quality intellectual property to world-class filmmakers" said Legendary’s Tull. "Sam's passion for 'Warcraft' is undeniable and we know that he will create an incredible film worthy of Blizzard's phenomenal franchise. We look forward to collaborating with our partners at Warner Bros. and continuing our successful relationship with Chuck in bringing this rich new world to the screen."
"Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have a shared vision for this film and we searched at length to find the very best director to bring that vision to life," said Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment. "From our first conversation with Sam, we could tell he was the perfect choice. Sam knows how to simultaneously satisfy the enthusiasts and the mainstream audience that might be experiencing that content for the first time. We're looking forward to working with him to achieve that here."
"Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft has become a second home for millions of players and Sam’s experience and talent make him the perfect director for this remarkable and action-packed world," said Atlas’ Roven. "Alex and I are proud to be working with Sam and re-teaming with our friends at Legendary and Warner Bros."
The film will fall under Legendary Pictures’ co-production and co-financing deal with Warner Bros. "Warcraft is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which our studio is best known. We have enjoyed great success with our partners at Legendary, and this is an incredible opportunity for us to work with Sam on a project that is so eagerly anticipated by so many," said Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.
Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft universe is a rich fantasy setting that revolves around the epic conflict between the opposing forces of the Horde and the Alliance. Since its debut in 1994, Warcraft has developed a loyal following across the globe, with several bestselling, award-winning PC games and a range of popular licensed products including novels, action figures, apparel, comic books, board games, and more. World of Warcraft®, Blizzard Entertainment’s subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the Warcraft universe, is the most popular game of its kind in the world. Its most recent expansion, Wrath of the Lich King™, is the fastest-selling PC game of all time, with more than 2.8 million copies sold in its first 24 hours of availability and more than 4 million in its first month.
Further details about the upcoming Warcraft movie, including cast and targeted release date, will be revealed as development progresses.
i hope its better than lord of the rings. would be funny if they use some in game content in the movie like black wing lair or looting epic weapons lol.
Chris Metzen is a hero. I don't think he, or any other big players at Blizzard, are going to let this suck. But I guess we'll see. I'm already quite happy that Metzen has declared that this will be more of a 'war movie.' I really hope it remains to be a 'Warcraft' movie and not a 'World of Warcraft' movie.

Back when i played wow and the first movie info was released, Blues in the forums has said something along the lines of "Oh this won't include any WC1/WC2/WC3 content. The cast will be entirely new characters (none in the game) and it will follow a different storyline. And Horde will be playing the badside."
Made me sad a little, but at the same time I kinda understood it would be better for Blizz to do that so it doesn't confuse people who never even heard of wow.
If it's real actors, there's 90% chances I won't bother with the movie (only 10% if ti's actually LotR quality, but chances are it's gonna be really cheesy). If it's a 2-hour cinematic CGI orgasm like the Warcraft3/WoW cinematics, Day 1 screening.

thats like saying i dont really look forward to seeing a balrog off lotr in makeup. this isnt some cheap $5000 budget bbc narnia movie, blizzards putting a lot of money on this and sam raimi is a pretty acclaimed director.
Lets hope this movie breaks the stereotype of bad movie -game adaptions.
The question isn't who directs it, but who writes it. You can get the best film-maker in the world to direct it but if the script is shit the movie won't work.

I mean.. Let's try and write a better movie with the story/lore Mario grants you :p. Sure it could have been better, but more easyli it could have been way worse.

mario had little plot to work with. whereas blizzard puts effort into storylines for their games which give some potential for movies. my opinion is that this could be a epic hit or miss
On July 22 2009 17:33 udgnim wrote: would go for the WC 3 story
no idea how many movies they're planning on though since the WC 3 story kind of needs more than 1 movie to cover it
If they are still going by what they said at last year's Blizzcon panel discussion -- it's going to be more of a huge war movie with a lot of familar major characters.
they also said the people behind 300 and The Dark Knight were working on it -- but iono if any of that is true anymore.
I have always liked the story in the warcraft universe. I bet if this one does well enough they would def make a sc movie. I just hope they don't fuck it up too bad. Game movies suck because no real effort is put into them because its a "game" movie. If people were to take those projects seriously and bring in good writers/directors/cast then it has a chance to be the break out film for games to movie adaptations. I have hope for this movie only if blizzard has a major say in it, but if they have too much control it will prolly come out august 30, 2032.

LotR is pretty much one big cartoon and if this looks anywhere near LotR, I say we're fine.
I've never played any warcraft game (well, except DotA-.-) but I really hope this succeeds beyond any expectations, because that'd probably make Blizzard make more movies, ie. Starcraft.

lol :D great idea
Anyways, with Raimi directing it it has a shot of being decent and being a lot better than most videogame adaptations, i'm not expecting anything too amazing though.
LoL, it's gonna be a terrible movie but will still rake in so much money from all the serious WoW nerds.
Warcraft Lore would make for a good movie but they way blizzard is now (Money grabbing cunts), they'll end up making it some gay fags vs all the horde.

Yeah, honestly a Diablo movie would be much more badass, and real actors wouldn't be so bad because humans always had somewhat realistic proportions in the Diablo universe (contrary to wc's cartoony style, which would much better fit a CGI).
A WoW movie? I can already see the action of this little gem: movie starts, there is some brief character introduction and then two hours of gathering quests. I mean, those fire pig's bones are not going to pick themselves up and someone has to keep those murlock's eyes stock on the apropriate level. It's a dirty job but that is a war and someone has to do it.
I'm sure this movie will be atleast decent, Sam Raimi is a badass director and his only crap movie I can remember in recent times is Spiderman 3, but that was because they were forcing him to put Venom in the movie (Sam stated himself that he didn't really understand the character, he wanted only Sandman/Harry, which probably would've made the movie a lot better). Drag Me to Hell was an awesome movie too haha
I seriously hope that its not simply "Horde is bad gaiz hurrr" :l Warcraft 3 was a very good story, without it being firmly black and white (well, obviously Undead were evil, but the other three were not without faults). And seriously, with Thrall and some other characters on the Horde side, I can't really see how they are going to make the Horde side "badside" without removing/seriously altering those certain characters.
Anyways, last I read it was supposed to do with the World Tree. I read somewhere that they planted a new World Tree and things were going wrong with it or something like that, and the Emerald Dream is getting messed up. Sounds like good material to work with, as long as they don't get too convulted with the plot.
Trolls, trolls, trolls... I am so sick of trolls This movie is going to be mildly impressive to a minimum when it's Blizzard (and more importantly Blizzards money) making it happen. And if it isn't they simply wont release it. Like Ghost.
They've allready stated years ago that the content of the (first?) movie will be mainly orcs vs humans. So all you wow haters can stop getting your panties in a knot.
I think Warcraft will make a better movie than Starcraft or Diablo. I hope that the Pandaren Brewmaster from WC3 makes it in somehow, such an awesome character.
Hopefully Samuel L. Jackson will be in it too lawl.
The best part is at the end of the press release. This is legit.

I hope it will have a good scenario! This is the most important part methinks, and blizzard's games (apart from Diablo 2*) had really nice scenarios. I didnt like Spiderman, because it was so damn "PG 12", but the director kept the spider-man feeling in the movies at least. To be honest LOTR sucked hardcore, I could barely watch it, it was a movie without any scenario to be honest; full of boredom and crappy graphics. I really hope that Blizzard will decide to aim the movie at a group higher than PG12 or at least make it more 'dark'. Does battalistic mean that the movie will be more like 300? This sounds quite good. But remember that 300 had an awesome scenario too (the comic book is better than the movie though). It definitely wont be the next mario movie, or TMNT movie, but I also hope that it wont be childish LOTR with LOTR-like crappy battle scenes. I seriously have no idea how could anyone older than 14 like LOTR movies, they are as bad as Harry Potter movies. No damn plot. (ok blame tolkien and rowling)
iablo 2 had great in-game cinematics, but to be honest, most of the speeches by the NPCs were boring, did anyone ever read them?

Changing some original stuff found in the books and omitting huge chunks of it while putting in a lot of crap instead (absolutely boring and unnecessary Arwen/Aragorn love drama). There's quite a lot of things you can bash this movie for.

Could be completely wrong.

Hope it does have a good storyline. I still haven't played WC story mode...

most torrents are pretty crap quality until the dvd is released for a movie, since they are mostly cam recordings.

I think a Starcraft movie would be great hype for both itself and for SC2 shortly before/after SC2 comes out.
But I understand their decision to do Warcraft over any others. Their WoW base is so large there's pretty much no way the movie could fail financially. Though for excitement, I'd personally go with D2.
That said I'm expecting nothing more than 2 hours of this

It's funny because I personally found LOTR to be the rare case where the books were quite boring, while the movies were great.
I don't understand all the WoW hate here :-\ Warcraft is a great universe, Raimi is a decent director, and Blizzard has enough money to get some cool actors, and the CGI video sequences in Warcraft/WoW were absolutely brilliant.
I don't get why some people hope for this to fail. I also don't get why people think that WoW movie = financial success. There are what, 10 million active WoW players? You need a lot more than 10 million people to watch the movie to make it a success.
The good thing about this is the quality of the movie will not really affect my judgment of the game whereas if a Starcraft movie were to be made and suck, it may affect people's views of the game (I think )
Peter jackson sucks anyway, thank god microsoft dumped him...
Butt back to topic, wc movie would be cool. I'm pretty sure blizzard won't let just anybody ruin their game franchise by making the movie suck. I'm pretty sure that they will be on top of the writers and directors to make this movie amazing. Not only that the CGI will be amazing cause I'm pretty sure blizzard will handle that part.
Random Teamliquid automatic Warcraft hate....check! ...but, seriously, guys--just because it's Warcraft doesn't mean you have to reflexively hate it two years before it comes out.
But, yeah, interesting news. Prospects are looking pretty good right now, especially with Raimi at the helm and Chris "Loremaster" Metzen involved as well.
This is nice, I quit wow long ago but I would watch this. I know a lot of people that would watch it aswell that have never played wow, its just so damn popular.
Im anxious to know what the casting is gonna look like.

? All the interviews I'm reading either mention during or 1 year before WoW
considering there's a 4 year gap between W3:TFT and WoW I'm pretty sure it'll be closer to WoW than WC...
Does anyone know at what point in the storyline of the series the movie is going to take place in? I followed and loved the story that progresses through WC3 and TFT, but I really haven't a clue what actual "events", if any, took place in WoW and such.
But as I'm sure has been said in this thread numerous times, a Starcraft movie would be a million times more entertaining, lol. Even if it's just a crazy action movie with lasers and aliens and explosions, it could still be a good sci-fi hit, lol. That, and I've ALWAYS wanted to see more Terran vs Protoss cinematic footage! gah!

WoW takes place 4 years after WC3:TFT and tbh unless you really looked for lore in WoW there's no way you can find events relating WoW to WC3 (aside from the raid bosses, sort of)
Argh I'd find it really sad if they did dumbed it down so much that everything is like Alliance = GOOD, Horde = EVIL.. why not add a few shades of grey...
I doubt it will dumb down anything. The Wrathgate cinematic is pretty awesome if you've ever seen it.
If they want an alliance = good and horde bad it would HAVE to be pre wow and basically wc1 and 2 because thats when the horde was "evil" while they were under control of the burning legion. in TFT and WoW neither of the 2 factions are evil or good just 2 sides that can't get along that well, the enemy was always an external force from them like the legion or the lich king. I think it would be dumb though to jump right into WoW storyline if they want to attract people that are not warcraft fans as people would not get the relationship between the horde/alliance and all that.
Hmm what are the biggest events on wow.. -bunch of heroes killed kel'thuzad -alliance and horde invaded outlands -illidan got captured -kil'jaeden tried to consume azeroth -kaelthas betrayed blood elves -nightmare is creeping in the emerald dream -arthas attacked the living -some stupid dragons are doing whatever, traveling in time and trying to consume some magical dimension or something. -some bug guys invaded kalimdor, i guess it was done by one of the old gods.
If someone remembers something else, feel free to say it out.
Was expecting it to be pretty lame since the warcraft story is pretty lame, but now that they have the GREATEST FILM DIRECTOR OF ALL TIME working on it, it can't be bad.
I can't imagine this NOT being pretty cheesy. I hope they get some decent actors and write a decent script, at least. It'll be pretty much impossible for me to take a movie like this seriously. Doesn't mean I won't watch it though!
Okay venting here but Starship Troopers was absolute shit the fucking douchecanoe of a director couldn't even manage to finish reading the book. Not to mention the acting was shit too. The Starship Troopers movie wasn't even Starship Troopers.
And why the hell are my fonts different after the Firefox update!?
I'm just strongly hoping it's not some shitty CG animation and that they use real actors instead.
If Blizzard is really smart they are gonna be putting Chuck Norris as the human ret paladin and Samuel L. Jackson as pretty much anything, but most likely some stupid orc warrior.
I can also predict any NE females in the movie will be wearing basically no clothes, which is great.
Last but not least, Im' just hoping they won't fuck up Warcraft lore EVEN MORE because of the movie... I mean, basically the whole WoW storyline is a huge shit over Warcraft's lore, with draenais (holy shit we're space shamans who worship some... glowing rune thing... and happened to crash into your world!) and everything else, I'd rather see some part of the good War2 lore converted into movie.
I was always in love with warcraft lore and I'm still pissed at Blizzard for ruining it with WoW. Most wow players don't even care about the lore because the game lets you do whatever you fucking want with no regard to it.
Hopefully the movie will kick ass because it has the potential to.

Wow.. imo only people who know anything about movies should be allowed to post in this thread.

Its pretty stupid to say "WoW fanbois rejoice" or "lol wow" when the more important parts of the story are in the books and in the Warcarft 1-3 games. WoW has no plot. The Warcraft games have some interesting characters and the Arthas story is one of the best in any video game.
People should actually play campaign or at least read the Warcraft wiki before making such stupid judgments. Metzen is a GREAT lore architect.
The story is good enough to make a good movie, and 100 million is enough to cast and film it well.

hr that was pretty cool... who are the forsaken - did they already have a big role in WC3? Can't remember since its been ages since i played through the campaign - I only remember that the Sylvana Wildrunner arthas mentions in the vid turned evil kerrigan style.
Anyone who didn't like Starship Troopers takes things too seriously.. It's so bad that it's good. I mean aren't the ads and hilariously cheesy one liners in the movie a clear signal that it's not trying to be fucking Aliens and is more trying to be a spoof?
Anyway, on topic, the movie will probably be another 6/10 movie like all of Raimi's other efforts. Of course I'll still go and see it to support Blizz.

People should actually play campaign or at least read the Warcraft wiki before making such stupid judgments. Metzen is a GREAT lore architect.
The story is good enough to make a good movie, and 100 million is enough to cast and film it well.
what you underestimate is how much WoW nerds think they know about lore
The timeline of the Warcraft movie will be set in between after the end of Warcraft 3:TFT and before the first WoW game (No space cows/protoss wannabe's).
They've said to make the movie in a warlike settings, no good guys vs bad guys bullshit, but instead more about 2 sides trying to survive after the shit that went down after war3. It will be told from the perspectives of the horde side i believe, if i remember it correctly... this however all are subject to change during the production.
too lazy to find the official blizzard post for this. but yeah thats basically it...

anyone who played wow without playing atleast wc3 first know nothing about lore. I forget who i had ask me why the scourge suddenly joined the horde or something like that.

The Forsaken played a key role in WC3 as backstab attackers against the Scourge IIRC- got rid of the dreadlords (and kept one as a pet, lulz) and at the same time killed the last human forces of Lordaeron

Again, what they think they know. I played all WC games including WoW up to Sunwell (not proud of that) and I can't count the number of times I've heard someone say complete nonsense about WC3-> WoW lore

wtf does that even mean
pretty sure we've all seen movies...
I meant only people should post who have at least some lvl of good taste in movies, despite not being 100% serious since im not a censorship nazi
Perhaps you have played too much Warcraft if you think taste has "levels".
lol ^^ I haven't played WC3 since shortly after it was released.
I guess I didn't phrase it too well and shouldn't have used the word taste, but the way I see it is that, just like with music - for a large part it is just all about your personal taste (this time I'm using it correctly ^^) - which is a subjective thing you can't really argue about.
But then there's also a lot of relatively objective things - for example if it's a movie/song that is original or if it's just copying something that has already been done 10000 times before. Just like I find it pretty obvious that LOTR has way more plot than 300. You could argue that 300's story is just a lot cooler or whatever (I actually enjoyed that movie, despite it being very "light" entertainment) but you can't possibly say that it has more story than LOTR (And btw I read the graphic novel too)

Starship troopers is totally TvZ colloseum
Imbalanced maps ftl.
As for this movie, I see no reason to write it off without first knowing more about it, unlike so many people here seem to have done. It's true that just about every video game to movie port has been a failure, but I do have some faith in Blizzard. If any group is capable of breaking that trend, they are the ones.
Speaking of bad game movies, which in your guys opinion has been the BEST of video game movies? Personally I think the 1st MK movie was probably the least horrible of the bunch.
The big problem for game movies though is people at this stage really don't know how to make them well. I think they have trouble balancing making a movie for people who like the game and people who haven't so they try to do too much and end up ruining it. Also I don't think people who make movies take them seriously so they just put out crap knowing that at least game fans will go out to see it so they get bad actors and writers with low budgets. This movie has hope if they get enough money for the project and attract some talent.

I dont think there was a good movie, based on a video game so far. I mean like properly great. But I guess Silent Hill was the best effort so far, followed by the first Resident Evil (mostly because of the soundtrack). Doom's FPS scene was so good, but other than that most of the movies based on games are total crap. Alone in the dark comes on top of my head - it was simply bad on a whole new level.
Still not convinced that Metzen is this LORE GOD that people make him out to be, in his interviews he can't even remember half of the lore that he made up and with every new game / expan he constantly goes back and rewrites the lore to better suit whatever they are trying to sell at that point in time.
I think this movie is going to be great. Blizzard is quite self conscious of the products it releases and since Blizzard has control it will only release the movie when it's good. I really don't understand why everyone is so full of doubt towards SC2, D3 and this movie when every single game Blizzard has made has been a massive hit. They know what they are doing.

I hope this one's good... every game to movie i've seen (Resident Evil, Max Payne, Silent Hill etc...) have been really bad on the source material.
how Silent Hill is a bad source material? This is one of the games with truly unique atmosphere and plot, SH 2 is simply one of the peaks in the gaming industry so far, a masterpiece
I really think that they should have made it a CGI movie. Blizzard is famous for their cinematics and I think that there'll be a high probability that it'll be a bad movie if they use live actors. It would probably end up being really.. cheesy.
From the article: "Wrath of the Lich King™, is the fastest-selling PC game of all time, with more than 2.8 million copies sold in its first 24 hours of availability and more than 4 million in its first month."
"Can we beat that with StarCraft 2?" must be what some Blizzard executives have been pondering over...

hmm i doubt it will beat 2.8million in 24 hours...but 4million in a month is certainly possible.
I saw this coming. But i bet it will be a success no matter what, with several millions of WoW players and lots of WC franchise nerds i bet it will rake in alot of $$$ for blizz.
considering i don't ever want to play warcraft or w.o.w.. maybe i can watch this movie and follow up on a sequel made out of that.. i hate being left out of the harry potter fad (yes, i know.. nerd, but people always talk about it - even older ppl) and lord of the rings, and others like that.

what do you mean by prejudices?
The experiences you gather along your life that lead you to praise something or bash it.
This was announced back in '07... they just recently announced the director. I wonder how many years this will be in development before it finally happens...

A Starcraft movie would be so cool. Just picture it; Zerglings being cut down by the thousands, marines having their limbs torn off, lurkers impaling people, scv's mining minerals endlessly, glowy protoss beings being all high and mighty. Awesome movie

i said really bad ON the source material, which means they recreated the source material poorly. i agree that Silent Hill is a great source for a movie, but the movie that was created based on it wasnt very good.
Silent Hill is a great game and Silent Hill is a decent movie. Resident Evil, the movies, were pretty funny and if we consider the trilogy as simple action movies, they are decent too.
And StarCraft the movie already exists : it's called starship troopers

AGREED! i went through youtube watching all the warcraft 3 cinematics (because i never bothered playing through the single player campaigns) and they were all pretty amazing. if it turns out lotr-ish i wouldn't mind though.
How can you delay something that is still in the writing stages? It's not like they will hire actors or anything until that is done. Anyways, you can't delay that which has no deadline

good lord why do people continue to try to make movies out of games IT DOES NOT WORK
This is not true at all. The only reason movies made based on games suck is because they are either made by uwe boll or just super low budget. If a move based off of a game has a huge summer blockbuster budget then it will be a good movie and not fail. They are getting great writers/actors/director/etc so there is no reason this movie would be bad. I personally think a SC movie would be cooler than a WC movie any day.
If its made on blizzard's timetable, it will be delayed at least 3 times along a couple of years. regardless, they will sell around 12 million tickets. one for each subscriber to WoW, at least.
speaking of 12 million, does anyone know if they include accounts that have been frozen? because I bet there are a good 2-4 million at least that are frozen, at least until cata releases.
