So I got the newest issue of the magazine Popular Science (August 2009) and I found a little ad featuring Elky that I thought was pretty interesting. Kind of cool how he mentions Starcraft so much.

That's pretty cool. It reminds me of the autobiographical blog Rekrul wrote where he shared some similar thoughts on the similarities between being good at sc and poker.

That's fucking cool! I wonder if it is possible to become a decent poker player without being good at SC because I never hear from noobs making money with poker.

Haha, ex-StarCraft pro-gamer begins revolutionary approach to poker training. That's actually pretty cool. Too bad that it's just an advertisement, I imagine a lot of popular science readers will just think it's PokerStars trying to encourage people who think they're smart into gambling their moneys.

Dudes, it's not an article. It's an advertisement.

It's just a page PokerStars paid for and put up an Elky interview in. It says "Advertisement" right at the top of the page.
It felt like gravity.

wow great find. Thanks for sharing this.

It just shows that you can really be good at anything as long as you try. I honestly think he would be good at any game he set his mind to, thankfully for him he picked one of the most rewards (Poker!)

That would be cool to see if they can get really good, i think they would be able to since they are good at adapting to different situations. Cool article and how the hell was he able to be so damn good at so many games, SC, Age of Empires, WC3 ?!?! wtf i cant even get really good at one of those lol (not that ive tried any except SC and slightly WC3.

I think the reverse won't happen because 1) There's way more money, fun, and free-living in poker than Starcraft and 2) so much of Starcraft is mechanics as opposed to just straight-up decision making.

Nice article. The only thing that irks me is the question:

Q: 'Do you credit your history as a gamer to your success at the poker table?'
A: Absolutely...[...]

The question should be the complete opposite and Elky answers as if it was anyway. His success at poker should be credited to SC not the other way round...

Don't know if Elky misunderstood the question or the editors fudged it on purpose.

Reading comprehension fail on your part, mostly.

Edit: That's not to say that it isn't a horribly written sentence or anything, but the use of history and success makes it fairly obvious what it's meant to mean.

Honestly, Idra would scare the shit out of me if we were playing poker. I could see him having memorized all of the odds for every situation, not to mention the fear of losing to him and being told how much I suck (aka the truth).

hahaha yeha Idra and phil hellmuth do have the same personalities. Imagine someone calling a Idra's raise with Q 10 off-suit and lucking a straight on the turn or river. He would go crazy.

Yeah, I would think he would of mentioned Rekrul considering the similar lifestyles they both went through.

oh wow I didn't even know he had a bracelet.

Personally I was surprised he didnt mention Ivan Demidov, who is just ridiculously good at poker
But I'm guessing both Demidov and Rekrul aren't sponsored by Pokerstars?

nice LOTS of sc mentioned here.. odd he didn't refer to rekrul as a fellow sc->poker player though.. REKRUL has a fucking bracelet I mean commoN?

oh wow I didn't even know he had a bracelet.

Personally I was surprised he didnt mention Ivan Demidov, who is just ridiculously good at poker
But I'm guessing both Demidov and Rekrul aren't sponsored by Pokerstars?

at least rekrul is PS team pro, not sure about demidov but elky probably doesn't know him too well himself from sc/wc3 days.

and lol no demidov is not ridiculously good at poker, obv. he was the best player of the last years november nine but that is not saying much.

Getting 2nd at the WSOP main event and getting 3rd (or was it 2nd) at the WSOPE main event in the same year is fucking ridiculously impressive and something noone else has ever done
