Recently one of the biggest radio stations in Australia (Triple J) held a vote for your top 10 songs of all time, in order to make a "Hottest 100 of all-time" (they do a hottest 100 each year for Australia day). It's one of the bigger radio stations here while still being non-commercial. Voting is closed now, and they're playing a few songs from the top 100 each day, and this weekend they'll play the entire thing I think? or at least 50 to 1.
The list so far is here. This is just what's been played/revealed so far.
It was insanely hard to pick a top 10, but this is what I ended up voting (with only seconds to spare before it closed):
Rolling Stones, The - Sympathy For The Devil Beatles, The - Come Together Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower Velvet Underground, The - Heroin Elliott Smith - Miss Misery Led Zeppelin - Kashmir Pixies - Where Is My Mind? Clash, The - London Calling Radiohead - Paranoid Android Rolling Stones, The - Gimme Shelter
You also have to pick a number 1 song, so I picked 'Pixies - Where Is My Mind?' for that, though really any of those songs could've been it. <_<
So anyway, I was interested to see what TL's top 10 songs of all time would be. I had a quick search and couldn't find a thread like this, just a lot of "top xxx songs" kind of threads, so I hope it's cool.

Yeah man, I know what you mean. It was so hard. I just decided to get it done and just kind of roll a dice in my head between some songs, as I only had about 10 minutes to do it in. There was so much that I had to miss out on though, like a Bob Marley song, a Bob Dylan (though I convinced myself All Along the Watchtower would kind of count ), a Cream song and a bunch of other stuff No Woman No Cry has already been played which is cool, could've been higher though!
Megadeth - Peace Sells Morbid Angel - Maze of Torment Joe Satriani - Satch Boogie SNSD - Gee (zomg) Sadus - Black Autopsy - Disembowel Judas Priest - Painkiller Pestilence - Out of the Body Kreator - Blind Faith Iron Maiden - Flight of Icarus
This is hard. And slightly vague. Do you mean your favorite songs based on their content? Or the ones you think were the most memorable/important? Or just your current favorites? Or the ones that were your favorites the longest, perhaps?
Anyway, the CURRENT best list I can come up with: (no particular order)
ACDC - Thunderstruck Quiet Riot - Mental Health Metallica - Fade to Black Bon Jovi - Wanted Dead or Alive HammerFall - Heeding the Call Journey - Don't Stop Believing Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills Manowar - Hail And Kill Sonata Arctica - San Sebastian Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train
Andrew Bird - Not a Robot, But a Ghost Animal Collective - Summertime Clothes David Bowie - Space Oddity David Bowie - Moonage Daydream The Doors - When The Music's Over James Brown - Cold Sweat Kings of Leon - King of the Rodeo Of Montreal - Rapture Rapes the Muses Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto #2 in c minor The White Stripes - Black Math

I guess it's a mix of this. Content/impact/the way it affects you/songs you would never be sick of. All of this together is pretty much how I answered. Songs you've loved the most, and always will.
Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother RUSH - Spirit of the radio System of a Down - Peephole Postal service - iron & wine Pearl Jam - Alive Yes - Roundabout Tool - Schism Incubus - Aqueous Transmission The Doors - Soft Parade Pink Floyd-The WallCD2 tracks 8to13 -In the Flesh to Outside the Wall Most Epic Arrangement Rock has ever had... imo :D
Kottkes honest vocals, and a haunting accompaniment from the 12 string guitar makes this song really special to me.
#2: Title and Registration - Death Cab for Cutie
Gibbard's lyrics are just amazing. Everytime i listen to the song I'm in awe of the lyrics. really, listen to the song.
#3: No Children - The Mountain Goats
The lyrics and the unconventional melody really make this special.
#4: Oh, Susquehanna! - Defiance, Ohio
...With every trace of life, it seems, confined within a frame, the faces move from day to day but the strips all look the same. And the punch lines are resoundingly unfunny for those trapped in this architecture of easy money...
#5: Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
The most emotionally moving electric guitar solo i've ever heard. Pure brilliance, and waters lyrics are sensational too.
#6: In Christ there is no East or West - John Fahey
Oh my god
#7: Easter and the Saragasso Sea - Leo Kottke
Guitar composition at its finest
#8: Wish you were Here - Pink Floyd
Such a touching message
#9: Room 8 - Leo Kottke
Techincal Brilliance
#10: Driving of the Year Nail - Leo Kottke Techincal brilliance on a 12 string once again, such creative composition. Every time i listen to the song I'm left smiling in disbelief.
Weezer- Say it Ain't So Bon Iver - Skinny Love Joe Purdy - Mary May & Bobby Matt Nathanson - Romeo and Juliet El Canto del Loco - Pot Ser Peter Gabriel - The Book of Love Bright Eyes - First Day of my Life Flogging Molly - If I Ever Leave This World Alive Sam Cooke - Bring it on Home to Me Derek and the Dominos - Layla
I'm obviously not as manly as most of you, but they are great songs imho.
elliot smith - miss misery rocky votolato - alabaster rolling stones - sympathy for the devil jimi hendrix - voodoo child 16 days - whiskeytown you remind me of home - ben gibbard like a rolling stone - bob dylan to be young - ryan adams paint it black - the rolling stones beast of burden - the rolling stones
haha didn't see the op posted elliot smith, he was a brilliant artist.
I cannot name 10, but i can name my absolute favorite song of all time.
Stairway to heaven - Led Zepplin
this song is a masterpiece, it evokes a sense of serenity in me that cannot be had any other way. Keep in mind that this is coming from a guy whose other top 99 songs would all be hip hop

Great list, and yeah Elliott Smith was amazing. I really hope he makes the top 100 on JJJ, but he has so many great songs I'm not sure if enough people will pick one particular song enough.

As you can see, its one of my favorites ^_^ Its such a touching song, and the music video is AMAZING. ON my gf's b-day this year i rigged the TV to act as a monitor and then played the video through it while we watched it on the couch. It was her first time hearing the song and she started to cry!
1. Achilles last Stand - Led Zeppelin 2. Echoes - Pink Floyd 3. Over Now - Alice in Chains 4. The Show Must Go On - Queen 5. Blue and Yellow - The Used 10. Time - Pink Floyd 11. Erotic Saints - Zeromancer
Last few I was not 100% on, but they are definitely up there. I know my top 5 because I spent a week deciding.
according to the weed guy on UCB, Sympathy for the devil is ranked 27th AT BEST. Sweet Home Alabama is the greatest song of all time. You are clearly a cop.
I feel like this is the best single Beatles track - one that evokes the Beatles career as a whole and serves as a send-off to the group.
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
From its dynamic and unique structure to its exuberant execution, this track jumps out as a easy to love song with a place in Rock history.
Jethro Tull - Bouree
This is the song that made me want to play the flute. Enough said.
Pink Floyd - Brain Damage
This is more a nod to the album - though I pick this as the single track the represents the mood and structure of the album ( though Time is a close second)
Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
This track very much encapsulates the LSD experience to me. The best example I can find of channeling that otherwordlyness into music.
Ten Years After - I'd love to change the world
I don't know who these guys are, nor have I heard anything else by them I like. But I love this song.
The Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Eric Clapton brings the guitar to life as a carrier of emotion here. Illustrates that music is emotion.
01. Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No.2 - 1st Movement 02. The Mars Volta - Cassandra Gemini 03. Radiohead - Pyramid Song 04. Zu - Obsidian 05. Sigur Ros - Andvari 06. Smashing Pumpkins - Thru the eyes of ruby 07. Lee Eun Mi - I have a lover (이은미 - 애인 있어요) 08. Beethoven - Symphony No. 7 - 2nd Movement 09. Trentemoller - Into the trees 10. Imogen Heap - Hide and Seek
Just from the top of my head, I'm sure I missed some

edit: Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
Oh, you also have Rachmaninoff :D
Yep, Rach's 2nd Concerto might just be the greatest song of all time. I think that the third movement is the best part though.
IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER CAUSE THAT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE:
1. Iron Maiden- Hallowed Be Thy Name 2. Megadeth- Tornado of Souls 3. Megadeth- Foreclosure of a Dream 4. Pantera- Cemetary Gate 5. Iron Maiden- Paschendale 6. Judas Priest- Electric Eye 7. System of a Down- B.Y.O.B 8. Mudvayne- Shadow of a Man 9. Megadeth- A Tout Le Monde 10. White Stripes- Seven Nation Army
I could never even come close to compiling an accurate top 10 these just some of my faves at the moment.
EDIT: Mechanix by Megadeth is also amazing, had to mention that lol.

My favorites in no particular order, and also off the top of my head.
#1 Paperthin Hymn - Anberlin This whole CD is amazing, I put this CD on repeat for at least a year.
#2 Truth of My Youth - New Found Glory So fast paced and awesome, not much else to say.
#3 Anything You Say - Deas Vail Again, this whole CD is amazing, It was really hard for me to pick a particular song for this band.
#4 Salt Water Room - Owl City I usually don't like pop but this dude is a musical genius. Recently Owl City has been the *man* to put on repeat for me, no homo. (it's just one guy not a band)
#5 Smother Me - The Used He puts a lot of emotion into this song and it just clicks for me. I feel this band has a number of other good songs too.
#6 The Unwinding Cable Car - Anberlin Pretty good CD but not as good as Never Take Friendship Personal IMHO.
#7 Worker Bees - Billy Talent I don't like this band much any more honestly, but I've listened to them so much in the past and I still listen to a couple of there songs such as this one every so often so I felt like I had to rep them.
#8 Aerodynamic/One More Time Remix (Alive album) - Daft Punk These two songs mixed is crazy awesome. (Kinda like a pillow fight)
#9 Learning To Breathe - Switchfoot Child hood memories, there old stuff is SO good.
#10 Be My Escape - Relient K Played a lot around me and it's so catchy, again a good band with quite a few good songs but they are scattered across so many CD's I haven't bothered listening to them hardcore much.
this is tough as hell rofl but okay, i'll try no particular order first
im gonna want to add another 40 tho
pink floyd - comfortably numb camel - lady fantasy king crimson - court of the crimson king the beatles - a day in the life queen - bohemian rhapsody the doors - touch me bob dylan - like a rolling stone the doors - riders of the storm jefferson airplane - white rabbit rofl ive gone through like 30 songs trying to find the last, some choices are ruined because they're much worse outside their albums and i feel that makes them less appropriate for this kind of compilation ok i cant decide so 9 it is

I dub thee awesome.
These are in no particular order, because there are WAAAAAY too many to list. I'm also deliberately putting only one song down from each band on this list:
New Found Glory - Head On Collision X Japan - Endless Rain Anberlin - (Fin) Sonata Arctica - Replica Sugarcult - Memory Daft Punk - Harder Better Faster Stronger/Around The World (Alive 2007) Relient K - Forward Motion Goldfinger - 99 Red Balloons Thousand Foot Krutch - Phenomenon Oasis - Champagne Supernova

My goodness Nylan, I think me and you would get along very well.
How did I forget something corporate and Jacks mannequin!
SNSD - Etude SNSD - Gee SNSD - Genie SNSD cover - Beautiful Restriction SNSD - HaHaHa SNSD - Let's Talk About Love SNSD Tae Yeon - Stars/Byul Brown Eyed Girls - How Come Eden's Crush - Love This Way Younha - Gossip Boy
Clearly I am biased, but then again this is supposed to be subjective.
10. Edguy - The Pharaoh (Burning down the Opera) Tobias needs to get his act together and make more epic, long songs like this. It's really a shame that they only have one song like this.
9. Black Sabbath - War Pigs (Paranoid) Classic tune.
8. Blaze Bayley - Tenth Dimension (As Live as it Gets) Terribly underrated ex-vocalist of Iron Maiden. His own band is great and I'm glad to say I've seen them live twice. Blaze is an incredible frontman, really gets the crowd hyped up and makes you dead tired by the end of it.
7. Kreator - Terrible Certainty (Live Kreation) That Riff.. kills.
6. Dead Kennedys - MTV Get off the air (Frankenchrist) Can't really have a list without Jello. His spoken word stuff is pretty good too.
5. Death Angel - Lord of Hate (Killing Season) First, you think Death Angel is good. Then you see them live, and that's when you truly start appreciating them.
4. Exodus - Deliver us to Evil (Another Lesson in Violence) RIP Baloff, one of the best thrash vocalists ever, if not the best one.
3. Iron Maiden - The Clansman (Rock in Rio) Bruce is god, and proves it here.
2. Testament - Do Not Resuscitate (The Gathering) Pretty much the perfect Thrash song.
1. Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor (Back to Times of Splendor) Incredible, complex yet does not resort to instrumental wankery. There's a reason this album took two years to make. Must listen.
I don't even know if I can come up with ten.. we'll see.
BTW I'm surprised some people here actually listen to Relient K, haha
1. Weezer - Only In Dreams This song is just perfect, it has this dreamy feeling (which perfectly fits the title of the song). The bass is so simple yet so catchy, and the last 5 minutes of the song is just an instrumental that starts from basically silence and builds up into the full band. Octaves on the guitar can be so awesome when used right, and they're used perfectly in this song.
2. Foo Fighters - Everlong I guess I have some memories with this song so yeah.. IMO it's just the perfect love song, it's very very catchy and just a great song
3. Weezer - You Gave Your Love to Me Softly This song is like 2 minutes but it's the epitome of a very outstanding pop-punk song, not much else to say about it.
4. Filter - Take a Picture Another song with a dreamy feeling, I really really like listening to it when everything in life seems to be going absolutely perfect and I just feel so alive
5. Weezer - Across The Sea People say Pinkerton > The Blue Album, and even though I disagree with that I think this song could be used to at least help prove that. Of course it's written about something in real life (Weezer's lead singer got a letter from a girl that lived in Japan) and the instrumental in the middle of the song is just beautiful
I can really only think of 5 right now.. but they're probably my 5 favorite of all time, everything after that sorta flips around all the time so yeah
Brand New - Logan to Government Center Death Cab for Cute - Title and Registration The Most Serene Republic - Anhoi Polloi Brand New - Skinny Love The Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 The Cure - Pictures of You Joy Division - Ceremony Rogue Wave - Love's Lost Guarantee Cut Copy - Lights and Music Radiohead - Karma Police
Mostly I tried to pick one song from each of my favorite artists...10 is so few! A list of best albums would be much easier for me to write.
Metallica- Creeping Death Trivium- When All Light Dies Led Zeppelin- Stairway to Heaven Iron Maiden- Fear of the Dark Slayer- Disciple Judas Priest- Painkiller Behemoth- At the Left Hand ov God Yngwie Malmsteen- Arpeggios From Hell AC/DC- You Shook Me All Night Long
radiohead - talk show host coldplay - amsterdam oasis - sunday morning call u2 - bad u2 - one step closer radiohead - all i need coldplay - animals madonna - i'll remember
I'll have a limit of one song per band, otherwise they'd probably be all Radiohead.
The Tourist - Radiohead The best possible end to the best possible album
Anchors - Secret and Whisper This band's vocalist is really unique, and his ability to hit any note really shines through here.
Viva la Vida - Coldplay Really well produced, interesting lyrics
One - Metallica Just because of how fun it is in Guitar Hero
99 Problems - Danger Mouse, The Grey Album This album was a groundbreaking work mostly because of what it started. I think this was the turning point for the anti-RIAA movement... I could remember thinking "this sounds so cool... why did they send the guy who made this a C&D notice? That's so stupid."
Crazy - Gnarls Barkley Great singer, great production.
Dirty Harry - Gorillaz
Pink Floyd - Money
Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the Reaper The guitar solo is great, but not because of the guitar. The supporting instruments' parts are written so well.
Hmm... the rest of the music I listen to is just stuff released by random people on the internet... so I guess I only have 9 favorite songs.
Apart from being in Pimpest Plays 2002/03, the drums really bring me in. Always been a constant favorite. I love all the Pimpest Plays songs used. The April Fool's one on VioLetak's account one too. Especially Call of Fame.
2. How Six Songs Collide - Norwegian Recycling
If Mraz is a C player on Iccup because of his ling micro, Howie Day a B player because of his muta harass, 3DD a top 20 ranking guild because of their members, then sAviOr composed this song.
3. Dawn Over a New Day - Dragonforce (Sonic Firestorm)
By far one of the best DF songs, and I'm a fan. I'll state only one song from DF in the official list, because there's so much DF bashing going around, but Valley of the Damned, Starfire and Once in a Lifetime are definitely my faves too.
4. Bad Touch - The Bloodhound Gang
This song is CHEESE. I want to go back in time and see the public's reception when it first came out. Enough said.
5. Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton
Always reminds me of a very good friend who I definitely still want to get together with. The live > recorded too. I love it, and will definitely practice it when I finally do pick up the electric guitar.
6. Kryptonite - Three Doors Down
This and Here By Me (Both by 3DD) both hold a very special place in my heart. Kryptonite reminds me of childhood days, Here By Me always brings me memories of smiles and friendship (because it never got further than that and it's still that way.)
7. Terran Soundtrack - Blizzard Entertainment
You can never go wrong with this.
8. 100 Years - Five for Fighting
Makes you think about life, this one. Much better than the Superman one too. I actually don't like songs that are overused/over-popular. People offer different views that are sometimes immature, clouds my own opinions about the song.
9a. Nine Crimes - Damien Rice (Abbey Road)
Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan. Damien Rice alone just sucks. Really.
9b. Rootless Tree - Damien Rice (Abbey Road version)
Again, Lisa Hannigan is needed to make this song a timeless piece. Damien Rice alone is annoyingly whiny and self-centered. Yes, he actually sounds like that when he sings this song alone.
9c. Hallelujah - Damien Rice (Leonard Cohen's induction to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame)
I'm not really biased against Damien Rice. I just think Lisa complements him really well and breaking their duo was an extremely bad mistake. Damien's rendition of Hallelujah is the best yet.
10. Poems, Prayers and Promises - John Denver
Blame my dad for being a John Denver fan. This song has always been one of my top, all through primary school till now. I'd put Please Forgive Me (Bryan Adams) in this slot, if not for the fact that this song is more meaningful than that one, and that I also memorised the lyrics to this song while I haven't done so for the other.
Definitely worth a listen on a rainy day or during work/home transit, or in a foreign country whilst touring the area.
10 favorite songs? That's impossible, so here's my top ten by winamp play count~
Devin Townsend - Life Devin Townsend - Funeral Devin Townsend - Bastard Devin Townsend - Night Toad the Wet Sprocket - Stories I Tell Disillusion - A Day by the Lake Devin Townsend - Voices in the Fan Devin Townsend - 3 AM Devin Townsend - Sister Devin Townsend - Hide Nowhere

Nice picks, I like all of them! I actually put 'Only in Dreams' on #11 for my list, so it barely didn't make it.

Some very good lists. People here have some good taste for music in general. I don't know what to make for my list because I like many different genres, from very, very heavy metal to punk pop...
I'm gonna stick to the classics and metal, I guess.
Led Zeppelin - Heartbreaker AC/DC - Hell's Bells Iron Maiden - The Prisioner (or Infinite Dreams, and many others...) Metallica - Wherever I May Roam (or the recent The End Of The Line) Opeth - Serenity Painted Death In Flames - Cloud Connected Helloween - The King For a Thousand Years (epic intro is epic) Blind Guardian - Lost In The Twilight Hall (cause I've had a spiritual experience while listening to this song on drugs once, and it was motherfucking scary.) Weezer - Falling For You (non-metal honorable mention cause Weezer rocks) Green Day - Chump (band that got me into music when I was 10. I'll always love GD.)
blind guardian - nightfall ray parker jr. - ghostbusters stratovarius - twilight symphony elvenking - a poem for the firmament flogging molly - another bag of bricks mägo de oz - molinos de viento the darkness - girlfriend ssgt barry sadler - the ballad of the green berets symphony x - the odyssey running wild - the guardian

Although my "favorites" always seem to shift every few months or so:
The first 4 songs are just about tied for #1, it's too hard deciding how to order them. 1. Dream Theater - This Dying Soul 2. Protest the Hero - Blindfolds Aside 3. Dream Theater - The Glass Prison 4. livetune feat. Hatsune Miku – our music (sue me, this song is badass) 5. Funeral for a Friend - Rookie of the Year 6. Blood Stain Child - Cyber Green 7. Bloc Party - Like Eating Glass 8. dredg - The Tanbark is Hot Lava 9. Less Than Jake - Nervous in the Alley 10. Coheed and Cambria - A Favor House Atlantic I love my prog. metal and indie rock.
This is almost impossible i cant even think about my top ten albums. So focusing on "rock":
1 Shine on your crazy diamond -Pink Floyd all parts :D 2 Since ive been loving you -Led Zeppelin 3 Tarkus -Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Masterpiece imo) 4 Foxy Lady -Jimmy Hendrix (Hot song!) 5 In my darkest hour -Megadeth 6 Wake up -Rage against the Machine 7 Bohemian Rhapsody -Queen 8 Dream Theater -Pull me under 9 Here and now -The Ernies (yeah THPS) 10 Superunknown -Soundgarden
If there's one thing I like these "silly lists" for is that I can search the thread for songs I like, and discover new artists in the rest of the good looking lists. So here I go (no particular order, also, I tried to limit it to one song per band, just so its more diverse.):
Passive - A Perfect Circle Televators - The Mars Volta Lateralus - Tool You Can't Win - Tomahawk Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd Heart of The Sunrise - Yes The Great Destroyer - Nine Inch Nails Electric Worry - Clutch Death Rides a Horse - Russian Circles Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
10 songs that are high on my favorites list, random order:
AC/DC - Hells Bells GZA - Dual of the Iron Mic Wu-Tang Clan - Heaterz Blue Sky Black Death - Shoot You Dead Judas Priest - Tyrant JMT - Contra King Diamond - Family Ghost Mercyful Fate - Curse of the Pharaohs Portishead - Over RJD2 - Ring Finger
Ok, here are my personal favorites off the top of my head. Limiting myself to 2 songs per artist or practically the entire list would be Yes. xD
10. When The Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin 9. Astronomy Domine - Pink Floyd 8. Pilot To Paradise - Eloy 7. Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles 6. Mirror Of Illusion - Hawkwind 5. Another Night - Camel 4. Echoes - Pink Floyd 3. Starship Trooper - Yes 2. No More White Horses - T2 1. Heart Of The Sunrise - Yes

Radiohead - Kid A Pink Floyd - Shine on you crazy diamond Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody The Beatles - A day in the life Massive attack - group four King Crimson - court of crimson king Public enemy - Don't believe the hype (lol) Nick Drake - Pink Moon

I assume only swedish people have heard my nr 9 spot so here it is: + Show Spoiler +
It's almost impossible to come up with a top ten list of songs under any small criteria, let alone something this open ended. There's really just no way it's enough; there will always be something left out, or the list will get dominated by current listening or something.
I took a stab at it anyway, using several picks as symbols of larger ideas than just the one song. Nevertheless, I still had trouble holding it to 10, so first some honorable mentions. These are mainly my favorite songs by very good bands that didn't have anything extra to get them into the top 10 list.
Honorable Mentions: * Evanescence - Imaginary, Fallen * Dragonforce - Revolution Deathsquad, Inhuman Rampage If Through the Fire and the Flames from Guitar Hero is all you know by Dragonforce, you should really check out the rest of the album if you enjoy it - a lot of the tracks are really more interesting and epic, just not quite as over the top on the guitar work in most cases. * Flogging Molly - What's Left of the Flag, Drunken Lullabies * Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine, Appetite for Destruction * Rise Against - Life Less Frightening, Siren Song of hte Counter Culture
#10: Metallica - Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Master of Puppets This is somewhat of a body of work pick for Metallica, and several of their songs could have gone here - Unforgiven was probably next in consideration. I picked Welcome Home for having possibly the best message about the treatment of mentally disabled people amongst my favorite songs of theirs.
#9: Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin IV A very cliche pick, but there's good reason for that. The song is probably a little overhyped, but has a wonderful buildup of rhythm and emotion that rank it among the best classic rock songs of all time.
#8: The Eagels - Seven Bridges Road, Live As far as I know, the Eagles never recorded this in the studio, but it's slipped on some live and Greatest Hits albums. It's very simple - really just some acoustic guitar and the band harmonizing, but there's osmething very beautiful about the simplicity of an acoustic guitar backed by a nice harmony. Good Riddance (Time of your Life) by Green Day was another possibility for this spot, but I think Seven Bridges ROad makes the point a little better.
#7: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Ohio, Single Written and released very quickly as a single in response to the Kent State massacre, this ranks as easily one of the best political protest songs of all time, with the very simple yet pointed lyrics and warlike drumbeat. It also happens to be very good music by a pretty awesome band.
#6: Disturbed - I'm Alive, Ten Thousand Fists Disturbed is awesome and I definitely had to include something by them. The reason for this song, and it ranking this high probably has a lot to do with the fact that I've been listening to Disturbed and this song in particular a lot over the past week or so. I'm still trying to really figure out the full meaning of this song, but it definitely has an emotional chorus.
#5: Freedom Call - Warriors, Eternity Possibly not one of Freedom Call's very best songs, but I choose this one to represent an awesome band because it's one of the songs that originally helped get me into Power/Symphonic Metal.
#4: Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here, Wish You Were Here A very touching song about their departed former band member; quite powerful emotionally. Interestingly, the lyrics can also be reinterpreted pretty easily into a Vietnam protest song; I used to think it was one before I discovered the intended meaning. This song just speaks to me on several levels.
#3: Kamelot - The Haunting (Somewhere in Time), The Black Halo Amazing song by an amazing group on an amazing album. Really showcases Roy Khan's tremendous vocal talent, as well as guest singer Simone Simons's. If you're into Power/Symphonic metal at all and you haven't listened to Kamelot, you should.
#2: Tool - Wings for Marie, 10000 days I would argue Tool as probably the greatest Alternative band ever. Great vocals, mindfuck lyrics that are very open to interpretation, different and creative guitar riffs, and the occasional epic, emotional song like this one about Maynard's mother. I've heard this song referred to as the Stairway to Heaven of this generation, and I'd tend to agree with that. The songs have in some ways similar structures, with a slowly rising crescendo, and each has powerful emotional meaning especially to the band.
#1: Rhapsody of Fire - Dawn of Victory, Dawn of Victory Pretty much all of Rhapsody of Fire's stuff is epic, and while this may not be their really oen of their best songs, it's up there, and will forever hold a special place to me as the song that first introduced me to Power/Symphonic Metal.
Chances are I've forgotten something or could probably reorder the list a bit better, but after looking at it for a couple minutes I'm mostly happy with it. Hopefully a couple of my picks here that I haven't seen on lots of other lists are interesting to a couple people.
lol all rock? I only know like ACDC thunderstruck and Oasis lol
in no order
Noisia - Exodus Rob Dougan - Clubbed to death Immediate Music - Serenata Andy Blueman - Sea Tides (Energetic mix) Above and Beyond - Air for Life (Andy Moor mix) Kyau vs Albert - Falling Anywhere Kandi & Neumann - Let Go Evbointh - One Wish Armin van Buuren - Communication (Coldware Cold mix) Arksun - Arisen
Loving the Sigur Ros. I was so close to including Hoppipolla instead of a Stones song but I really couldn't give Sympathy for the Devil or Gimme Shelter away : /
Tool - Lateralus Tool - Eulogy Porcupine Tree - The Start of Something Beautiful Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize Porcupine Tree - Trains Incubus - Pardon Me Incubus - Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song) Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons Metallica - Master of Puppets Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3
In no particular order, though I probably would stick Lateralus at number one. I heavily encourage anyone into prog to check out Porcupine Tree, they're amazing.

Black Winter Night is really good too. Their first two albums were so much better. After that they went for a higher speed and it sorta limited the beat.
Once in a Lifetime, Black Winter Night, Dawn over a New World, Valley of the Damned, Starfire. Fields of Despair holds the speed they play at these days, but it's awesome as well.

Glad to see someone mention Porcupine Tree, and since you already listed it, I'll leave out Anesthetize to make more room in mine
Bowie - Heroes (or Ashes to Ashes..) The Prodigy - Climbatize Radiohead - Dollars and cents (among many others) The Beatles - Because Aphex Twin - Window Licker (or Milkman..) Muse - Butterflies and Hurricanes Franz Schubert - Unfinished symphony Nirvana - Breed Jimi Hendrix - The wind cries Mary Paul Simon - Call me Al (don't ask lol..)
In no particular order, many of which could be swapped with others (I love so many) My fav varies from time to time, but would probably be a Bowie or Radiohead tune.
but here goes. Top 3 is easy enough, but I can never decide the order of them.
Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge over troubled water Elton John - Your Song Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
the rest in no particular order
Elliott Smith - Needle in the hay Weezer - Island in the sun Jimi Hendrix - All along the watchtower Johnny Cash - Hurt Beatles - Let it be Neil Young - Heart of gold Bob Dylan - Knockin on heavens door
Yeah I know several of these songs are covers, but I like them better than the original and most of them are probably equally/more known to the public than their originals anyway.
Wow, this is some taste people have I just can't compare to. I'm not going to bother giving a top # of music because those get overwritten quite frequently, not to mention (again) my taste is pretty lousy (an array electronic dance music and/or Eurobeat) would dominate this list.

how can musical taste be "lousy" ?? Everyone is different
Hmm I can't really put the songs in order because they are "equally" good. Anyways here goes favourite albums
Stratovarius - Forever (live in athens) Satyricon - Mother north Children of bodom - Follow the reaper Stratovarius - Visions (entire album) Madball - Demonstrating my style Sick of it all - Scratch the surface Cro-Mags - Age of quarrel Amorphis - Elegy/tales from the thousand lakes Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the 36 chambers Gang Starr - Moment of truth
Basically Scandinavian metal, american hardcore and hip-hop
If we're talking about rock music, my list would probably consist mostly of Rolling Stones and Beatles, with some Led Zeppelin and Neil Young thrown in for good measure; not only because those are good, but because I'm familiar with their full discographies. Actually, I'd have a much easier time picking a couple of songs by other artists -- the hard thing about those four is the impossible task of deciding what to throw away.
OP listed "Sympathy For The Devil" and "Gimme Shelter" which are probably my favorite two Rolling Stones songs as well. If I were to add a third one, it'd possibly be one of "Rock and a Hard Place", "Paint It Black", "Hot Stuff", although there are a few other strong candidates.
It's really hard to pick 2-3 top Beatles songs. Their absolute best work which comprises at least 10-20 songs of very even quality, and my personal favorites happen to be the most unconventional ones, such as "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!". To be extremely conventional, I guess it'd be impossible to leave out "Hey Jude". Some of their early stuff (like most of A Hard Day's Night) is also awesome. Gah, it's too hard
I'd pick at least one song by Neil Young, and "Ohio" listed earlier by Macavenger is as good as any. Other possibilities are "Rockin' In The Free World", "My My, Hey Hey", and perhaps a few more unknown songs like "Change Your Mind", "Leave The Driving". But unlike with the Beatles, I wouldn't get nightmares over leaving a bunch of those out.
Led Zeppelin - "Stairway To Heaven". Yes, it's overplayed, but deserves it nonetheless. Other candidates: "Good Times Bad Times"; "Kashmir" or anything from Physical Graffiti disc 1.
And then some single candidates by other artists:
John Lennon - "Imagine" Pearl Jam - "Even Flow" (or any other representative pick from Ten) Metallica - "Master Of Puppets" or maybe "Enter Sandman" Guns 'N Roses - "Welcome To The Jungle" (or any of several others) Cream - "Sunshine Of Your Love" or maybe "White Room" Something by Yardbirds (not sure which right now) Something by Elvis or Little Richard (again, hard to choose one)
And that's ignoring a bunch of givens like "Hotel Of California", "Smeels Like Teen Spirit", "Smoke On The Water" or something by Simon & Garfunkel... that I however don't care as quite much for personally.
If we're not just counting rock, I'd include "Giant Steps" (John Coltrane), "Spain" (Chick Corea) and/or something by Miles Davis. If classical music is allowed, it's an entirely different story, and I'm not even going to try (I could stretch myself to balance Beatles and Metallica, but how do you even compare Beatles and Bach?); I would be able to write down a separate classical top 10 though.
So yeah, this wasn't a top 10. More like a draft for a top 20. It could be turned into a top 10 with a lot of cropping, I guess. Sorry for being too lazy to do the work
Choosing top 10 albums would be much easier, I think. Maybe I'll do that...

Thanks, it's always exciting to find a fellow progger (second only to finding a single, female progger). Simon Says and The Tangent are definitely my favorites of the modern prog bands. Suddenly the Rain is surely a classic in the making, the entire album is amazing actually. The Ethernet is great if you don't mind Tillison's sometimes bored vocal delivery, although if you do I would recommend checking out some of their other songs (Uphill From Here, GPS Culture, Four Egos, One War) where his singing is more powerful.
Uh this is hard. I've got about 50ish songs that are all close 2nd's but i THINK these are the right songs for my top 10. I'll prolly end up editing this 10 times anyway though ~~. In no particular order:

Well my dad is a much bigger PT fan than I am. I do like a few of their songs, but they're not a band I actively listen to. And no, the Simon Says I'm referring to is definitely not metal, they began as a project out of Sweden started by Stefan Renstrom, although now they're pretty much a regular band with him doing most of the composing. Their site is here.
1. The Game of Love - Santana & Michelle Branch 2. Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) - Hendrix 3. The Last Firstborn - Celldweller 4. Where Is My Mind? - The Pixies (kudos to the guy who mentioned this on page 1) 5. Out to Get Me - Clawfinger (found this while watching a sc highlight vid) 6. Clint Eastwood - Gorillaz 7. Triumph - Wu-Tang Clan 8. Rock Is Dead - Marilyn Manson 9. Surfing With the Alien - Joe Satriani 10 Float On - Modest Mouse
Uhh I'll try my best to pick ten: Beach Boys - I Know There's An Answer Bob Dylan - Shelter from the Storm Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash - Girl from the North Country David Bowie - Always Crashing in the Same Car Frank Zappa - Gumbo Variations (Honestly there is way too much Zappa music so there's one lol) George Harrison - Run of the Mill Velvet Underground - Heroin Talking Heads - The Great Curve Franz Liszt - Totentanz The Cure - Plainsong
I coulda swore I saw someone mention a song from the cd Disintegration by The Cure. Think it was JWD, I just recently got into it and it's incredible =)
This is just a guess. Also it includes no music from video games or anime, nor any classical. Just to narrow things down. Also, no artist is listed more than once, for variety's sake.
10. Depapepe - Start Fantastic energy. Gets me going when I'm down. 9. Coldplay - Viva la Vida The power in his voice when he talks about the fear in his enemies' eyes makes me want to go make some enemies fearful. 8. Dawnseekers - Eurydice Breathy female vocalists have to come into the list somewhere. 7. Beatles - For No One Picking a favorite Beatles song is rough, but the chorus is addicting and there's tons of emotion... quite like a lot of Beatles songs, really. Whatever, this is the one I remember. 6. LPChip - Dreaming Onwards So calm and so beautiful. It makes me believe in good times. 5. Zephyris 4 - Coup de Grace Sets off my almost-synesthesia something crazy. 4. Brian Dunning - Down in Yon Forest Best damn flute I have ever heard. 3. Spyro Gyra - Bob Goes to the Store Cheerful, happy, epic song. Got me into music in the first place. Feels like you're riding an ephemeral roller coaster on tracks made of plasma in outer space. 2. Billy McLaughlin - Candleman Everything is going to be alright. 1. Tangerine Dream - Comet's Figure Head Perfectly peaceful.

Haha, I wouldn't choose this song by Spyro Gyra (to start with, I think both "Freefall" and "Breakout" from the same album are better) but your description is great. Especially that "ephemeral roller coaster on tracks made of plasma in outer space" completely fails to makes sense with respect to the song's title.
It's awesome that a single song "got you into music".

Actually, that was somewhat a pick catered to try to get non-fans of Dragonforce who are familiar with TtFaF from Guitar Hero to explore the band more. I agree that Black Winter Night, Revelations, and Starfire off their first album are excellent. Starfire is possibly the best power ballad I've heard (very close between it and Abandoned by Kamelot), and it'd be great if DF did a few more things like that.
Also, even off the Inhuman Rampage album, Cry for Eternity and Operation Ground and Pound might be better picks that Revolution Deathsquad in certain ways, but I'm not sure they'd be as interesting to non fans. I absolutely love the intro to OGaP, the rest of the song isn't anything special.
Oddly, I've never been able to get into Sonic Firestorm. It just has a different feel than the other 2 albums to me that I've never cared for as much.

Yes. Electronic. Trance. A lot of my <3 of this music came while I was under the influence of some xtremely powerful drug. Truly remarkable experience. I <3 the music anyway - but while under the influence.. it becomes magical, unbelieveable, hypnotic and invigorating.

Art Tatum is a god on piano, about 4 months ago I got his Savoy recordings and watched the few live videos they have of him. His technique boggles my mind it seems like he isn't even doing that much but I'm hearing ridiculously fast runs.
Well my top ten just used conventional music, but if I really wanted to try a top 10 I'd probably have to include a fair amount (if not fill the entire 10) of video game music. Some of the music from the Zelda games, Banjo Kazooie and Tooie, Golden Sun 1 and 2, Pokemon games, and others were just really great.

Painfully hard, yes. Many I want to remove to replace with new ones, some feel out of order. It was a very personalized list though. If I was to make one for the public, I'd probably put "Mamas and Papas- California Dreaming", "John Lennon - Imagine" or "Ben e King - Stand by Me" as #1

I could never do that to my precious music D:
Either could I, thats why I updated the thread with the final triple J countdown. My list would never be complete without There is a light that never goes out - The Smiths or Heroes - David Bowie or even Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden. I consider rock to be my favourite genre, but when it comes down to it, my top 10 list didn't really consist of that much rock at all. In that case I'd like to nominate Bridge over troubled water And yes, you're definately right. Simon&Garfunkel have a lot of fantastic songs. Good chill music.

absolutely. bridge over troubled water is awesome, one of their best. and of course sound of silence... maybe their most famous song. even though it's almost a bit overplayed, i still love it's "creepy" sound. s & g are simply brilliant.
Just to counter balance all the rock in this thread:
Airwave - When things go wrong Matt Zo - Lucky Strike Armin Van Buuren - Serenity Tiesto - Urban Train Cosmic Gate - Fire Wire Yoji Biomehanika - Ding a ling (DJ Scot Project mix) Beam v Cyrus - Thunder in paradise. Dave 202 - Generate the Wave (Fabio Stien mix) Binary Finary - 1998 (Binary's Finality Mix Richard Durand Edit) System F - Exhale
Too difficult...there are so many good songs that aren't in these ten that are equally as good.
System of a Down - Toxicity Statler Brothers - Flowers on the Wall Imogen Heap - Speeding Cars Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime Prodigy - Breathe The Offspring - Self Esteem Metallica - One The Beatles - Yellow Submarine The Brothers Four - Lemon Tree Yuki Kajiura - The World
Also some classical stuff, especially pieces by Liszt, Vivaldi, Chopin, and Rachmaninov. I like so many genres but hip-hop/rap is something that I can't get into. It's pretty terrible.
