As many lazy high schoolers know, online translation services are one of the best tools to use if lazy and bored doing homework for a foreign language class. Of course, it doesn't work perfectly. Translating things to different languages then back into English can be an amusing and entertaining experience, especially if, after trying its hardest, all it manages to spit out is poorly constructed "English" that no one would ever be able to make sense of.

Actually, it can be a pretty fun game trying to guess what originally went into the translator. And this is where the game comes in.

Generally, I'll put it through one Asian language (Thai, Chinese, etc.), one Eastern European Language (Russian, Slovak, etc.), one language with a different lettering system (Hindi, Japanese, etc.), and another miscellaneous language.

Try and guess what originally went into the translation service! Just for kicks. I'll reveal answers in a few days, or at least when a lot of people have submitted guesses. The sources I used could include speeches, selections from literature, wikipedia articles, etc. An example entry would look like:

Note: If, in the wikipedia article on, say, leopards, the result comes out as "leopards big cat the spotted like tropical", I'll replace "leopards" with "[answer]" so people don't know it immediately. Additionally, for foreign texts, I use the most common English translation.

1. Charles Dickens - Great Expectations

Some are much easier than the others, if you recognize them. The first one, especially, should be very recognizable to anyone who knows where it's from just because of the structure of the punctuation.

I'll add some more. Think of this as set one :D

Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections,
passions, fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons,
subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means,
warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer,
as a Christian is?
If you prick us, do we not bleed?
If you tickle us, do we not laugh?
If you poison us, do we not die?
And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?
If we are like you in the rest,
we will resemble you in that.

Maybe something like "an object in motion tends to stay in motion, ....."

good thread idea though

9 is quite difficult, since the source I used was an English translation of a non-English work.

Hints for 2 and 9 - an excerpt from 2 is a more or less common phrase. As for 9, I gave a hint in my earlier post.
