update: updated and refreshed whole page, back then I thought it was only hand drawn, however they seem to have changed it. You can now make any kind that has to look like a giraffe, except computer made. Also, you can post as many different giraffes as you like. added the chart aswell

My brother linked this friend of his that is doing this crazy idea by trying to gather one million hand drawn giraffes by 2011.

Here is one news about it:
http://theridiculant.metro.co.uk/2009/09/giraffes-giraffes-one-million-of-them-to-be-precise.html
Giraffes? Giraffes! One million of them, to be precise...How many giraffes do you, personally, have? For most of our readers, we're going to guess that the answer to that probably lies between zero giraffes and, maybe, five giraffes. In any case, we're fairly sure that you won't have as many giraffes as Ola Helland.

That's because Helland, a web designer from Norway, is well on his way to completing his ambitious One Million Giraffes project - a website dedicated to getting readers to send him images of giraffes they have made, in the hope of hitting a million by 2011. At the time of writing, he's made it to 209,395 giraffes. (sept 9th)

The site was inspired, as all the best things are, by a bet with a friend - Ola's friend Jørgen didn't believe Ola's claim that the internet made collecting things so easy that a person could collect a million of just about anything., Ola insisted you could... and so the hunt was on for giraffes.

The only rules are that the giraffe images can't be created on a computer, they can't be giraffes purchased from a store, and photos of real-life giraffes don't count. So far, entries have included stick figure giraffes, paper models of giraffes, and pictures of giraffes drawn on people's feet.

You can follow the progress here:
http://www.onemilliongiraffes.com
http://twitter.com/1000000giraffes
http://www.facebook.com/onemilliongiraffes

current progress: he just passed 333333 and is 1/3 of his plan. (1 nov 09)

For those who dont understand the point, it is simply for fun and to get people invoved and participating in something creative like this. Also it is quite funny to see whole countries taking innitiave to win the charts.

In Lithuania the site got featured on a news channel, and they wanted to become the country that has most giraffes. Many schools in Lithuania submitted loads of giraffes. (cant remember the link to this news, feel free to post it if you are from Lithuania and know about this)

Current Statistics each by country, maybe TL widespread natinality could add some more numbers on the countiries with very few or none giraffes?

Can't use a computer to draw the giraffes? Well then that makes it quite a bit harder to get 1 million, considering so few people have a scanner as opposed to people who will visit the site.

Cellphone pics of drawings works pretty well if you have tried it. Those are very common nowadays.

They don't end up with very good quality. This feels too much like a voting thread. -_-;

actually, most phones today give decent enough quality. And you need nothing more than to be able to see the picture signed by you.

Sweet. I'm so gonna make a giraffe of my own.

Completely unrelated, I'm just waiting for that site to explode with giraffe pr0n, kinda like how all the animals that were created and distributed by the Spore comminty when the Spore Creature Creator first was launched, were all penixes of various sizes and shapes.

"Let's show Jørgen how amazing the internet is."

Sure why not? Oh, because why should I care if my drawing is one of a million on some site for no reason at all?

I fully endorse a giraffe drawing thread, competition or fad, but one million of them is just pointless. Ah internet

Pretty sure that doesn't count as a giraffe or a squirrel.
It is currently unidentified.

This is just ridiculous. Could I send in an image of a broken link and claim that it is merely my artistic interpretation of a giraffe? That seems about as valid as any of the images he currently has.
