So how do most people around you react when after the revelation that you actually are still playing a 11 year old game?
For me i get stares of shock, disbelief, disappointment or just pure condecending comments and looks.
"But the graphics are so bad!" - GoW player "CS ah? what SC? Starcraft? Zzz" -DotA player "SC2 is it? SC1? - . - " - Dota player
"SC2 only got THREE RACES??" - Dota player
Theres only 1 guy i know who plays it quite well (for my low standards)
Of course, after explaining larva saving ( for mutalisk burst), reaver dropping, 1 dropship 2tank, probe scout <-> base macro hopping) most (who played the game before) are in awe :D
When I show girlfriends/female encounters VOD:s of hot progamers owning shit up in stadiums, they are like "why are you looking at chinese guys playing games?" I'm about to open my mouth and explain the awesomeness of SC but then I look at them and realize that SC will never mean the same thing to her so I just go "cuz I like it".
With guys, many people I know think SC is cool and it seems everyone has heard the mantras "the best RTS ever" and "the most balanced game ever". However I don't know anyone IRL who really plays it anymore. People play WoW, Runes of Magic.

Person: What are you playing? Me: Starcraft. Person: Why does it looks so weird? Me: It's 11 years old. Person: Then why are you playing it? It looks like your spazzing out... Me: It's a competitive eSport Person: Oh wow you need a life
...yeah, now i simply respond: "im just messing around..."
although i had the oppurtunity to talk about it in my COMS class for a speech, and yeah people couldn't believe their eyes when i showed them a korean SC tourny pics.
Most people seem to think it's pretty cool. Especially guys, but most of my female friends too actually. I guess I have it differently, though.
My dad even started following the scene for a bit, reading my articles at GG.net and he asked me after WCG SWE 2003 if SaFT won (which he did, ironicly)
I actually have a female acquintance that ocassionally plays SC. I think you have to go in a different way about telling people that you play an old game, if you don't want to look like a total nerd. What I do is usually not explaining the neat tricks like muta stacking and how gratutious amount of APM I have, but simply state some monetary facts of my past success, or say per se "I'm in the top X of Hungary". That's easier to grasp for most people, and you just look determined - not like someone who wastes their time playing a computer game.
in china the vast majority of guys all play some game or another. i'd say 50% of girls under 30 play, have, had or will play games seriously.
when you tell them you play SC they are like. "im too dumb to play that" -girls "my hands are too slow" -guys "i used to play that" "that is a serious game. i dont have time." "i used to play.. will play again when sc2 comes out" "is SC2 out yet?"

This.. I've heard that from at least 4 female persons. My girlfriend had basically no understanding but now she understands that it's a huge 'sport' and it's no different from taking interest in a traditional sport.
Most people in my class etc: They thing it's a good game (most of them) but think the graphics sucks etc.
It's quite popular with FFA bgh though and I arranged a tournament at a school LAN and two guys could play well, comparable to D+ so I had fun.
My friends who know tht i've been plying SC kept asking me about SC2. Every now and then, they go
"When is SC2 coming out?"
"Why dont you play SC2? i thought come out already?"
But SC2 is a new hope for me, if it is good, i can finally have fun with my RL friends together >_> .. until they give up of course (fingers crossed). Most of my best RL friends are from DotA back then~
Bascically the most famous competitive game here now is DotA followed some FPS like CS or CoD.
I remember 1 more thing. Since i beat them in wc3 also they go
"No wonder you can micro like that lah! You micro a a lot when you play guitar also!"
The size of the online starcraft community masks just how few people in the world know of its existence. I usually end up just saying, "Nothing, just some random hobby I have." :/
I hate telling people that i play sc, because the only thing they will talk about is sc2 or ask me sc2 related questions, and i'm not even at all excited about sc2 at all because i personally think it will fail(ofc i hope it doesn't) so it's hard to discuss anything sc related with them without bringing up sc2 i get the same questions as most people here though=\

then the next week, the same friend visits Friend: What's that? Me: StarCraft Friend: StarCraft 2? Me: No.

Usually they insist that zerg is the best race in the game and all you have to do is a 4 pool (they just call it a fast rush, silly non-SC players) in order to win. And then when I try to explain the balance between races, they insta challenge me to a tvz in order to prove the imba zerg, even after they haven't played for 5+ years.
I just tell people that grapchics is not the most important, and SC still don't look bad becouse of the art even through it is technically old, dying goons animation/sound never gets old. There is plenty of people still playing DOOM, there is plenty of maps done for it. Old crpgs are good also.
Like any other games my friend, like any other game... Unless they know and have somehow watched the Korean pro gaming on Youtube then they think a "bigger" deal about it
I've seen quite a few people in brisbane watching pro games. Every time I got to an internet cafe there's at least 1 person watching the latest proleague matches, and just the other day I was at uni and I sat down next to this guy and he started watching effort vs best (I think, can't really remember). Every person I play I usually own though, despite me being D- in skill level...

ya, this is how most people respond when I say I play starcraft. Most people use to play it back int he day and really liked it. Some think its weird I still play it this many years later but most agree it is/was a great game.
I wonder if it has to do with age range. Everyone in my age range(early 20s) played sc or knew people who played it. Younger people may look at it differently because they were really young 10 years ago.

that's pretty cool, i'm like the only person in my city who somewhat follows progaming
fuck that i love starcraft and let everyone know how insane my passion is
i never ever relent or ever believe any BS about how cool it is. as a result, i cannot tell you how many people i've gotten to watch starcraft. At my college harvey mudd (~800 students), I managed to get ~300 to show up for the MBC and OSL starleague finals on 4 different occasions (all starting at around 1am).
fuck yeah, starcraft pride for life
anyone embarrassed about starcraft should just remain OUT OF CONTROL enthusiastic and optimistic. if they don't get it, don't get defensive, don't get sad, just fucking make them understand
I was thinking of starting an esports club at my uni, if we could get access to a lecture hall one night a week we could watch gom or even DL a few Proleague sets to watch. A few of my friends apparently watch SC too, which I never even knew...
Despite my being of Korean origins, my older brother constantly tries to convert me away from Starcraft. He just doesn't get that us Koreans play SC like a conventional board game like chess or go. Well, strictly speaking he's a quasi foreigner since he lived almost all his life in a foreign country. Same for me but I just love my home nation and its culture :D I just tell him that I play to get ready for SC2, to pacify him a lil bit, which is kind of true since I picked up the game again last year after watching the then-mind-blowing SC2 presentation. Despite my 2 year break, picking up the game again is pretty easy if u used to be good at it. It's a bit like riding a bicyle, the 1st few mins u r kind of rusty but then u remember the hot keys, mouse gets faster and more precise, micro gets better. My bro once tried to find me a more up-to-date substitute and made me play Warhammer 40k Dawn of war II. Slowass movements, the entire game is decided by one or two huge units... I'm never gonna touch that thing again...yuk
I don't have many nerd friends. The nerd friends I do have have all come to respect SC, but they got frustrated from trying to learn it so quit. Most play DotA or something.
My non-nerd friends all think I'm a complete fucking nerd for being so into a game...when I told them I was going to Korea, they were like, "I bet you're more excited about going to see live SC than you are for actually going to your motherland, huh?"
Why can't you people get the fact that it's just not FUN for everyone. You need at least one year of playing to understand the game in-depth and get a clue of what the timings are, etc. Some people just don't want to go that far with a computer game.
You keep dissing the dota/cs/dow/etc players, but don't realize that most of them are ~15 year old, so they were 4 when starcraft came out. What kind of "respect" for the game do you expect from them?
And why does it surprise everyone when they say those things, most of them are pretty obvious (graphics are rather bad and most games would get boring after years of playing them). So just let it go, and come to terms with the fact that not everyone enjoys the same things that you people do.
Personally, SC stopped being fun for me to play when ICCup took over and everyone started doing the same builds that they see on MSL/OSL/PL/etc. It may be more challenging, but it's way less fun for me to play. All-out macro games are boring. I still watch the pro scene, because it does spew some fun games, but as for playing it, ICCup just seems sooooooo boring to me right now.

True, but to me it's like learning an instrument. In the beginning you know know anything. But after a few years ..... :D
To me, i dont feel surprised nor do i think they are stupid, im mainly disappointed that my friends dont have the same interests, or want to learn it. Kinda similar to music instruments, too imo.
Wow Day9, it looks like you are really influential outside of SC :O
All of my friends used to play it at one point or another, even my dad and sister played so I only get the occasional "lol" from them whenever I pick it up again and play for a bit.
all my friends don't understand the intensity a sc game can give so when i'm watching a VOD or a live game they just keep asking "why are you watching this?"
This thread makes me sad >>. When I tell someone I still play sc its either a) wow you still play that old game or b) cool I used to play that game a lot

During my last year in school we played iccup in our schools computer room. Then these good looking chicks in my class (These are the type that you normally would think that they barley could open word. Yeah I'm filled with predjuices) Anyways, they sit down to use the computer next to mine.
So they're like "haha wait a minute, isnt that starcraft? Me and my brother used to play that alot!" So I give them the iccup.zip file and they start playing with us. That was kinda fun
the usual reaction I get from SC is either "hurr durr graphics sux." (usually from underage wowfags) or "oh yeah that's a great game I used to play that"
My Mum is so totally supportive of it - eventhough it's one of the main reasons we have to live thousands of miles apart and only see each other once a year if possible. She has her own favourite players, teams and events. She's also visited several events herself during her two holidays here ^^
Most of my friends are esports people themselves and my non-esports friends appreciate the photos at least even if they can get confused by my ranting often.
I usually get the odd remark from those supreme commander, dawn of war 2 players. you know, those casual RTS gamers that cant do more than 2 things at once? They usually just say starcraft sucks without any legitimate information to back it up because all they can think of is "you can't zoom in really far, you can only select 12 units at a time, etc."
the 12 unit cap is to prevent rushing in large numbers and you need skills to manage a large army. and then you got wc3, which isn't really that bad of a game, but they jumbled all the abilities, like undead got the zerg trait of weak large armies and the protoss trait of buildings building themselves.
my laptop's wallpaper is a collage of progamers' photos, so when an officemate sees it:
officemate: who are those? me: sc programers from korea officemate: ?!? ... no reaction
then i tell my officemates how the proscene works in korea. i don't get much reaction from them until i mention how much are the salaries of these teen progamers.

Same here, not too plain, not too flashy.
I still think it's funny that Marines and Ghosts explode into a bloody target sign though
Most of my friends used to play it. And the others have seens me noobstomp one of our friends so they think it's just normal and cool. I linked some random vods to a girl who wanted to know what it was and in the ones I linked some of the pro's were crossdressing for unknown reasons. I should have watched them beforehand.
Even though I never played sc before, I'd say, through watching some C+ players' VODs, I can be C+ in 2 weeks. That's my opinion as I watch others play sc.
one of my friends in IRL plays/follows sc, he plays less then i do and only really watchs GOM, but everyonce and a while at a party we'll be talking and it comes up, everyone around tends to go quite at a lose for words untill we change the topic.
asside from him ive had people who call them selves gamers trash the game syaing "crappy graphics" "kekeke zerg rush" and the usual stuff.
other times it kinda goes "so you follow pro sc, whats the point its jsut a game "yea, you follow pro hockey, its just a game...." he and i have reached a mutual understanding of eachother now

And after that I usually don't explain the whole pro scene unless they're really close friends. I'm usually able to change my close friends' mind about it from
"Oh what a waste of their life" to "That's true... at least they're doing what they love and making money out of it... what a lot of passion!"
You keep dissing the dota/cs/dow/etc players, but don't realize that most of them are ~15 year old, so they were 4 when starcraft came out. What kind of "respect" for the game do you expect from them?
Thanks to Halo and WoW, it is now cool for middle schoolers/high schoolers to play video games. The reason why most 15 year old "gamers" don't like Starcraft is because they aren't true gamers, but are rather casual gamers that only got into video games because of the culture. As somebody who just turned 16, I can guarantee you that if you took teenage gamers who did not get into gaming because of the culture but instead because they enjoy the strategy and competitive nature of gaming and introduced them to Starcraft, the majority would love it.
Most of the people I tell about starcraft are adults and as such their reaction is usually (Holy crap not only im getting old but the world is getting crazy)
Most people basically react the same way me to me too.
"What's that?" "Starcraft." "Star... craft?..." "Yeah." "Oh... I used to play that like 10 years ago dude. Why are you still playing it? There is so much better games now. Those graphics are so shitty." "Meh. I still think it's fun." *He sits and watches me play for like 10 minutes* "So... think I can play too?" "Sure, if you have a jump drive." "Kkk 1 sec I'll go borrow one."
Now 80% of my IT class plays Starcraft on LAN together every day. I'm obviously the best, they think I am like god(iCCup D+/C-) o.o;;
I don't tell people around me I play sc... Except for one Korean guy in my seminar. He's just a bnet East newbie though. It's funny because he thinks he'd pwn me.
Most people that find out I play SC generally give the standard "its old," "graphics suck." responses.
I've actually had some people tell me to "play a game that takes skill like wow" 0.o.
I did end up playing wow for 4 years, and let me tell you, that game will kill anything you ever had resembling gaming skill. It requires no twitch reflex and is made to make sure you can think slow and not pay attention and still succeed. When I finally got back into sc i had to start all over at 50apm.
I force most people to be okay with it. "It's a sport, I like it, stfu" I just tell them as if they should respect it. My parents/sis (my bro plays too) don't quite get it but I'd told them "you'd be okay with it if this were chess", which is true, they know I watch pro matches and I've shown them the stadiums so they know it's probably to be taken seriously and just now when ret vs Castro was going on they happened to drop in and I told the "it's our Dutch representative in the finale". They went "oh, is he winning?" right away so yeah. They're not gamers though. My friends that are into gaming (or, like, know gaming) know I play SC and I'm okay with telling them and claim it is superior to any game they know from then on out. The ones that aren't I don't tell (no reason to) or just go "I'm watching sports" or something.

i got 2 girls interested somewhat most of my friends know that I play it, and the two KOR guys i know dont play (one is into music too much so doesnt have time to, and the other won got raped by urs truely way to many times by a 14 nexus into carriers)

lol if you think that's bad try Shadowbane. That game was designed to be 'PvP-focused', and yet combat occurred at ~3 seconds per automatic melee swing, doing 100 or so damage to a person who could have 2000 health. The only choices you had to make were when to press one of a handful of buttons that would activate a 'power' such as 'Your enemy can't use powers for 5 seconds.' In other words, the winner of any given fight was determined entirely by class choice. I have never felt more sick and shocked at a game's poor design than every moment that I began a fight with somebody and knew with 100% certainty that I was going to die and there was nothing I could do about it... and the worst part was, that death would be in like 4 damn minutes. Nothing to do except mechanically follow the only options you have, get a soda, IM a friend, go to the bathroom, come back, and ignore the kiddie that talked smack to you after he 'owned' you. Those 4 minute periods of existential video game pain killed a little bit of the 'gamer wonder' in me forever.
edit: oh wait you can't try Shadowbane anymore. It went free and is dead now, right? last i heard
I tend to be a closet gamer, except with my closest friends. My interest in SC is primarily as a fan, rather than a player myself. I've gotten a couple friends mildly interested in it, but they all still think I'm crazy for watching VODs and replays all day.

Them: Oh, you play StarCraft? What do you play? Me: Zerg Them: Oh, when do you pool? Me: Umm.. changes depending on the build? Them: I usually just ling rush so I can get my second hatchery Me: ...
The other situations are always just that they play fastest or BGH.
They mostly like it and enjoy watching VODs as well. Most of 'em tried it but kinda gave up after a while, I'm the only one who consistently plays (played) it.
"Scu" (sc) is a cult around me and some of my friends. All our other friends, male or female, who don't actively play are familiar with it simply because we keep talking about it all the time. I think their general attitude is amusement mixed with exasperation.
e.g. hanging out with some of my non-sc-playing friends at a hookah bar, over thanksgiving break:
me: guys, I have to go soon.. I gotta go to this uh... scu party. friends: wtf, why do you have to go, now we can't play cards, and we're only back for the next few days me: uh... i dunno, we've been planning this for ages *general rolling of eyes and exasperation ensues*

This is true, unless they actually play it they'll just never understand. I've been asked why I still play it and why I'm not bored of it by people and I just ask them why footballers or tennis players never get bored of football or tennis.
I have had a number of people that have seen me playing it and were just like "that game looks fucking cool" or "I wish I could someday be as good as you at this game even though I've never seen it before now" lol. I also have a couple of friends that play and watch VODs and most others have shown slight interest in watching games
I told my coworkers about my trip to Paris last year for StarCraft 2. They were all pretty jealous. Now whenever they ask me what I'm doing on the weekend, I tell them I'm gonna be building pylons...
Me: You play starcraft? Person: Nah, warcraft is way better then that game Me: ahh warcraft is cool but its to slow Person: Starcraft is to slow .... Me: By the time it takes me to make a grunt in warcraft i could already be attacking with my first group of marines. Person: thats cause you suck Me:
Me: Starcraft thats a fun game Person: why dont u play warcraft its better Me: have you even played starcraft? Person: no but warcraft has better graphics :3
I've been able to convert a few people to SC... I always warn them about how hard of a road it will be to even get decent and they say "Don't worry, I'm dedicated" after watching some progamers...
They all quit after 1-2weeks and going 2-50...
I've had the typical pfft the graphics are bad come play DoTA/DoW with us..
My typical response is "What are graphics? Is that a gameplay mechanic?"
Some at university play(ed) it from time to time, but they don't want to play with me .
My best friend doesn't want to play it for some reason, probably because its freaking hard to do everything at once and he hates playing me (but he also didn't want to 2v2)
Most of my friends aren't gamers, so they don't play, but they know it and know that its a good game :D
Random people either don't know it or think it is a good classic game. People I've shown the Starcraft scene to usually go like "this is crazy" or "so they do nothing but play computer all day?". But they get the point when I talk about NaDas salary and Boxers fans.
I had a lot of free time at work, so I would bring my laptop in and watching some games while working. Haha, if there's a stigma against playing video games in the United States, imagine what it's like when you're watching a VOD.
friend: So... you're not actually playing this game. You're watching someone else play a game. 0_0 me: Yup, they're really good. friend *walks away*

I don't usually tell people I play SC, but my close friends know I do, and when SC2 comes out they're all gonna be playing.
My bf wants to say something:
Did the same thing. In the end, my result was the exact opposite. Before, my gf thought sc was no good. When she watches me play and i try to explain it, i got the usual rxn anyone would get. Then I somehow got her to promise me that she'll allow me to teach her at least the very basics of the game. It wasn't easy, she'd throw tantrums when she lost to the computer or when I start to tell her everything she needs to be doing. I decided after a while that I should teach her the passion of the game instead of making her a gamer.
Good thing I got a lot of things helping me: a.) Progaming - I would always hang around at her place and watch pro games. She never paid attention before, but when she had nothing better to do, she did. I was pleasantly surprised that she was quite impressed. I think the very first game she saw was Best's comeback against Luxury in the Ever08 OSL semis (she plays protoss). b.) Bisu - nuff said. c.) TL - This really sealed the deal. The articles, recaps, live reports, hype threads, polls: all you need to get and stay addicted. She even created this TL account. She kept asking me whether she should create one. I said it's up to her (I was just having fun making a bet with myself how long she could last until she eventually creates one). TL Rocks!!
Anyways, just to give you an idea -- I don't even need one of those things that alarm in my computer when there's an important match coming up. I have my gf. In fact, she would probably kill me if I missed an SKT game or a starleague final. Oh yeah, and she mentioned she had that laptop wallpaper of progamers -- no kidding...
I recall going to a LAN place in a nearby city late last year with a few friends, and we found they had Brood War installed on the PCs. Everyone in the room was sucked into Counter Strike, World of WarCraft, DotA or several other randomly assorted titles. When we began playing , surprisingly we actually drew quite a bit of attention.
The one I can remember clearly from the other side of the room was;
I hate ppl who say that there is no reason to play a game that is old or has worse graphics than current games.. Reminds me of an acquaintance I have who does not want to "waste time" on Fallout because the graphics are outdated.. sometimes I just want to hit him in the face.. with a hammer.
most people don't really care too much, but when i get talkin about the korean pro scene, ogn mbcgame, etc. they shake there head and look at me like i'm a nerd.
this thread has inspired me to try and start an e-sports club next year (or at the very least, an SC team). i know a couple of my friends who play BGH or fastest, but only like 1 or 2 play low money. I'm interested in seeing the SC to DotA/WoW ratio.
I hope I can get an teacher approval though, because the staff at our school generally disapprove of games. :[ (i.e., if we get caught playing any kind of game (whether it be flash or CD-requied) during break/lunch on the school computers, we get detention. D
The typical "What game is that? Looks pretty oldschool" response is the one I receive the most. I've also received a "You're Korean? Oh god... you play Starcraft, don't you?" from a Taiwanese student when we were first introduced.
I did manage to introduce my roommate to SC, but he was already a casual RTS gamer to begin with (he enjoys games like Battle for Middle Earth, Rome: Total War, and Stronghold). He complains rather frequently that SC is beyond his skill (he has trouble multitasking, etc.), but admits that it's a good game.
Thing is, he's the sort of gamer that positively HATES to lose, so he gets irritated every time he receives a thrashing. I've tried to alleviate this somewhat by matching him up with friends that are around his level (as well as the occasional 2v1 game against me), and playing a fair bit of casual UMS games. It's also worth mentioning that he plays Protoss and goes 2-base carriers every time.
My roommate last semester actually played starcraft. He wasn't very good, and he doesn't read or post on teamliquid, but he was familiar with the west channel and a lot of the well known American players. He played real maps and not fastest bgh, thank god. He really liked super obscure proleague maps that nobody plays anymore, if you see a guy hosting some random play/obs on west of a map that hasn't been played since 2003 that almost nobody has heard of, you probably found him. We only played like 10 or 15 games when we first got acquainted. After that he eventually started mad dodging me since I was a lot better than him even as rusty and inactive as I was. It was pretty badass though, he was mostly a "spectator" type player who did a lot of play/obs games and replays, but definitely did a good 50+ games every week, though a lot of that was 2v2 or bloodbath. He wasn't too concerned with using good build or getting better, only did iccup for like a week. I introduced him to the massive amount of proleague vods on youtube which he had been previously oblivious. He was like "omfg this is awesome!1", since he in general liked to watch more than actually play. Heh... he totally got me back into starcraft while I lived with him, I hadn't played for like 18 months until I moved in with him. Some other funny stories include me running a victory lap around our dorm courtyard hollering like a maniac while the sprinklers were going after winning an epic 40 minute zvt play/obs game where he was obbing, drunk double zerg 2v2s, and him winning 7 pvts in a row while drunk on 3/4ths of a bottle of vodka...opening with dt every time...against the same guy. Guy was hella nerdraging and demanding to rematch every time.
I also have some rl friends, we've known eachother for most of our lives. They were both hardcore serious war3 players all through our highschool years and a little bit when we all entered college. Their main gripes with starcraft were simply the lack of automine/mbs/unit selection limitations. Them playing sc2 hinges soley on whether these features are included or not. One of them insisted that TVP was highly imbalanced in favor of terran, despite playing maybe ~100 games lifetime and all on LT and the hunters. The other one still to this day insists that sc requires no micro and is just build build build attack move. hehe, funny guys.
Then the people you play with are either young or weren't into gaming while SC was the best game around. When people see me playing they always get nostalgic and start talking about it.
Most of the guys I know can respect such a game and are impressed by the intensity of it. However all the girls I know seem to absolutely hate it to no end.
my friends just play ums and bgh and the such when i told them to play low money their like 4v1 which i played a 4v1 and i got owned pretty badly too much to handle and their not interested in the korean scene T.T
my gf calls me a nerd for playing it lol. i get a lot of "i used to play that".
a lot of my friends stop playing starcraft because they get owned all the time. it's so unfriendly to new players lol. they just go back to dota saying that i should too but i find dota boring as hell. screw teamwork, i'd rather control a base and an army.=_=
Most of the time I get "Is that like world of warcraft?"
But one time this kid behind me insisted that Madden NFL required more skill to play than SC. And that he could own me in SC because it was so easy, even though he's never played it. My heart grew 3 times smaller that day >:

AOE2 was a good game. Fairly competitive back in 02 I believe. Clan wars and chat rooms that were way better than Starcraft. Zone was replaced by another big server and I'm sure there are still hamachi servers. AOE3 ruined it. The top 1% of good players are still fun to play but the bad... well 4v1s were often fun. And the game has a terrible imbalance. It's slow too because everyone plays on normal speed. Imagine starcraft on slowest.
Guy: So what games do you play? Me: Mostly starcraft Guy: What's that, a flight simulator? Me: No... It's like warcraft 2 but better Guy: You mean World of Warcraft? What a nerd man! Me: O_O

Most of the folks I'm around know Starcraft so I don't have the "What's that"
I have one probably pretty typical and one not-so-typical.
Typical - Friend: Starcraft? Dude I havent played that in years. I got into Diablo or something. Me: Yeah, you should check out some of the pro stuff, those guys are insane. Got me back into ladder playing after a 5 year break. Friend: Pro? Me: Yeah, in Korea. I'll show you sometime. Friend: Wait they play it professionally...still? (or) Koreans? Those guys always kicked my ass, no wonder.
And the not-so-typical.
Girl: What's that? Me: Starcraft. I'm setting up my Fantasy team. Girl: Starcraft? I never actually played that...I might want to try though, it looks like alot of fun. Me: >_> Girl: :D Me: What do you think of my team? Girl: Uhm...I dunno, I like their names. Me: You like sAviOr...he's your favorite right? Girl: Sure! That's so cute that you have a fantasy team for this.
And about a week later she and I started going out. Still are!
Some guys came over when I happened to be playing SC and the were like "ah so this is what you play" They we're 'impressed' by the speed with which I was doing stuff and I explained that I was only at 130 APM wheras pro cranked about 300. One of them went "yeha, I heard CS requires the most APM" and I laughed at him and called him a noob. Later I moved out, saying "yer I'm gonna roll the stuff he has over here" *points at base* but my timing was off and got raped by ultras to which they went "Hey this doesn't look good, they're killing all your mans lol"

Haha i got a new reaction from a DotA friend i've met recently.
Me: I'm quite bored of DotA. i play SC, it's better.
Him : "Hah? Starcraft sucks lah! Starcraft sucks Starcraft sucks Starcraft sucks Starcraft sucks! C&C is better! Have you seen the graphics before? Starcraft's graphics sucks Starcraft's graphics sucks Starcraft's graphics sucks Starcraft's graphics sucks"
Me : "You know, you sound like kids yelling "It's mine!" "NO! it's mine!" "I'ts mine it's mine it's mine it's mine ."
He laughs, and i claim victory :D

Showed the same guy this picture
He goes "Lame. Love should be more like DotA. Farm gold to buy presents for Gf . . ."
PS: WoW Arena takes quite a bit of skill, for example, countering a 1.5 sec cast time heal may not be too easy, and it has elements of "fog of war" but you hide behind the pillar instead to disallow others to cast spells on you. Definitely requires more than 50 APM, unlike what someone said. But I don't play WoW, my brother does.
I've never had a problem having to "defend" myself about playing starcraft, however I think most people find it very difficult to explain why they WATCH pro-starcraft (especially when they don't currently really play) and i've found a simple solution.
"wait, you don't play, you just watch these guys play this game ?" "yup, its a good game, and matches are entertaining" "but its so old" "Do you watch [Football/Baseball/Basketball etc.] ?" "Yeah" "How old are those ? and do you currently still play any of them ?" "uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"
i often compare it to sports too, but at the same time, there are no new sports with "cooler graphics" coming out ~ So far no one was able to contest the 'sports' or 'chess' arguement :D
Except for that same friend who goes : "Starcraft's graphics sucks Starcraft's graphics sucks Starcraft's graphics sucks Starcraft's graphics sucks" щ(゚Д゚щ)
I remember my uncle who played SC so often with us baaack then when he was in uni and my 11 year old brother would beat his 13 hatch zerg with mass gateway zealot, up to 7 ( though his secret was to keep pumping probes, no one taught him that), until we discovered an SC guide (the exact same one) in my uncles house several years later in a corner, and we laugh at all the implications we made.
Recently, he saw me watching SC and went " isn't that a little sick?" as in he thinks i'm crazy

I played WoW 2 years ago in season 2 as a Hunter in 2v2s and reached a 19XX rating. Back then Hunters sucked in 2v2s because we had to deal with the deadzone (A range between 5-8 where we can't melee or use our range weapon) and line of sight issues (exactly like you said you hide behind the pillars) which is why WoW arena is frustrating and unbalanced sometimes. You can imagine someone with logical sense would just keep kiting around the pillars against a hunter, which is why getting to 19XX with a hunter in 2v2s at that time must me I am a decent WoW player right? No not really its pretty easy game with a lot of retards, even though at the time arena sucked ass for Hunters the only reason I capped at 19XX is because I quit WoW, I know I could have reached higher. The point of this post I am saying WoW is easy and does not take skill as long as you are not a retard.
PS: WoW definitely requires around 50 APM because of global cool downs, after you use a skill there is a 1.5 sec cool down before you can use anything else. Also if counting 1.5 sec cast time is hard, try Guild Wars where you need to be countering 0.5 sec cast timers, =.= that shit is hard.
Most people that I talk to about it understand pretty quickly. I'm able to set people straight pretty easily if they say "oh there's no skill just ling rush" or "graphics suck" or "it's so old" or anything like that. People get it pretty quickly once I tell them about some of the intricacies of the game or about how it's the most competitive e-sport ever or about how it's the best-selling (individually game-for-game) RTS ever.
I met a guy once at a party like 1year ago that was into progaming and we talked a lot. Then this happened:
Me: "So where do you go to watch and follow progaming anyway? Teamliquid?" Him: "No, I'm really active on SC2GG. I barely go on TL I don't have an account there" Me: "Blasphemy."
He was a great guy so I tried to convince him to come on here, no idea if it worked since I never really saw him again after this lol

Virtually nobody plays Starcraft in England as it is essentially console-gaming nation. Here, the 360, Wii and PS3 rule. Unfortunately the PC is almost dead. In fact I honestly have never EVER met a RTS gamer in England.

2 years ago, friends in college campus played CS on LAN. One of them: "there is one guy who asked about SC and plays it, no one likes him" :-)
recently they all switched to SC - team games on hunters with computers to balance teams. I gave some tips to one of them about walling in with terran and using ebay to extend tank range
In most cases, SC is too ugly/old for casual players who just want to be trendy, too hard/fast for average players, and too annoying for hardcore players (control-wise, which I agree with. But they do generally find the game OK). And then there's the problem with cheaters ("hackers") when playing on BNet.
WC3 is a huge lot more popular than SC here, and it's hard to make a case for SC other than the facts that a) 3 races are better balanced than 4 b) the craziest gamers of all (Koreans) prefer SC But the counter arguments to these are usually: a) can be made (almost) even with good map design b) it was the first game there and it's hard for ANY new game to take its place, regardless of how good it is ... and these are hard to argue against. I don't care about it anymore though, since I don't play any RTS anymore.
2k+ as a resto shaman in 3s back in seasons 2-4 (when everybody bitched that shamans sucked) and 2k as a prot warrior on bg9 in season 3 and 4. 50apm is pushing it as a 1.5 gcd only allows for 40 actual casts if you cast on the gcd every time with 0 lag. If you cap your haste as a caster (terrible idea) you can get 60 casts per minute under completely ideal circumstances. arena is the only thing that resembles skill, but still nothing compared to any other competitive game. its 90% what comp you run and what comps you face, and the skill level required to do well is dropping with every patch.
Oh, and to not be too off topic, I actually had a glimmer of hope the other day. I mentioned to a friend of a friend that I was moving to south korea and their first words were "do you play starcraft?" He doesn't actually play but he told me I should be at home practicing instead of here so I'm in shape for when I go.

100% truth. On s3 I was top 5ish on my priest in 5v5 and top 5ish on my druid in 3's. All my gladiator friends already quit the game for the same reason: the competitive part of wow completely suck. Balance suck. And skill means less than 10% of the outcome of the game like Idle said. Team composition and luck weight much more than player skill. So it gets old fast.
But most of them won't play SC because they find it boring and ugly. Unfortunately, simply being 'balanced' doesn't make a good game :O
Actually, most of my friends still play SC so I'm quite lucky in that regard. And really, who else would know about this? I play by myself in a room... it's not like I'm busting out my laptop in the middle of the bus to get a few 4-pools in on iccup
none of my friends play's sc. But most of them know about it and even know about korean pro scene. The guy who got me into playing quit a few years ago. He was quite good back then, on LANs I always leeched his rep folder and I remember he had some games against [pg] members that he won. And he won every single game we played. A few month ago we played some 40 games or so and I won like 35 of them. He's Zerg and I'm Terran and he never played against a fe -.-. One of my other friends switched to wc3 but quit a long time ago but he recently had the chance to go to another country for his company. He choose Korea but didn't get the spot he goes to Florida now . Anyway we plan a trip to korea in the next year or so and we will watch proleague all the time My girlfriend knows about my sc passion and on sunday evening when I bring her home I always ask her: "So what are you gonna do before going to bed? Read?" "Yes, and you? Watch gom?"

Most people around me usually aren't surprised that I play StarCraft or video games in general (nowadays who doesn't play some sort of game?), but what surprises them more is that I created a website based on the game.
From my experience people aren't all that shocked when they see SC, but maybe that's because they can't even make the difference between SC and Chrysis. However, people think I'm joking when I say there are professionnal leagues and this game is a whole country's national sport. They're like: "no way there are channels that show people playing the same game all day long".
I've got to agree with so many posts in this thread: it's pretty funny when people think they're so great at a game they've never played against anyone else. I remember seeing this guy(#1) show his friend(#2) WC3 on a laptop in my campus. I go to talk to them and #1 starts telling me he's really good (not in a arrogant "i'll whoop your ass" kind of way, but he just thought he was actually good), so I just believe him. Then after a few seconds I tell #2 he should use hotkeys to go faster... To that, #1 responds: "oh dude, even I'm not THAT good! You need to be a pro to never click on the icons"...
My GF thinks its funny. I did show her some Youtube of Korean Pros and she said she doesn't care. I told her that she better care if she want's to be with me. She tolerates it but doesn't like it.
Some of my friends actually got me into SC about a year ago, and now we all LAN about once a week if we have the time. Of course, that's only three of my friends. All the other ones either have never heard of it, or they can't believe that I'm playing a game that's almost as old as I am!
My friends and parents know that I'm pretty obsessed with SC, but with me is a hole different story, since I'm not playing the game for years now and still spend a lot of my free time for reading stuff in the community's web sides or making gfx images for them. So my parents are pretty neutral to this because technically I'm not playing a game, which in their eyes is good, but still waste a lot of time on smth that they find rather pointless. With my friends its the same thing. I'm trying to explain them all what this is all about, some of my friends are quite impressed and amazed when they find out what is happening in Korea, but the majority just reply "those guys are sick, you are sick as well"
Most of my friends at least acknowledge that SC is very deep and skill demanding. I usually don't talk about gaming with people who aren't gamers anyway, so I avoid a war of the worlds. I try to talk about other things with casual gamers who are too bull-headed to acknowledge the depth of competitive games, but they often turn out to be slow and stubborn in other areas too.
But yeah I've only met one gamer in real life who actually thought SC was a bad game. He kept trying me to play me in games like WC3 and SupCom (at least these games aren't as infantile as DoW) but I always rolled him like 20:1. His arguments were nothing original (look on the old MBS threads to see carbon copies), though one amusing retort he had was that SC wouldn't run on his system because it was 64 bit. Somehow I found the retort both spurious and condescending.
Pretty much everyone I know respects SC for the fact that it is such a fine-tuned and skill-demanding game, but very few actually play it because it's so unforgiving for beginners. I usually ignore fools that don't understand the complexity of SC; they're the type that will never learn, so why waste the effort?
I never bring it up. But when I was younger, and someone would find out I play SC at school, they'd challenge me and I'd be like 'Ok.' When we played I'd totally rape them doing something stupid like Maxing out on marines and then attacking just because I knew if I actually tried they'd get pissed losing in 3 minutes... Which was fine and dandy. But the next day they'd talk about it at school and talk to like the 5 or 6 other people that are also SC noobs saying how many marines I got and I'd be thinking 'Boys boys... There are ladies present.' I'm pretty sure any girls who overheard I was really good at a computer game weren't getting wet.
Other than a friend who knows I play SC bringing it up... It never comes up.

its because PC gamers hide, because PC gamers hide.
Ever PC gamer thinks they are alone because all the PC gamers around them also think that they are alone, its not like we English are renowned for being forward in these matters, I've never once asked anyone if they play Starcraft, in the same way no one has ever asked me if I play Starcraft, the way it works is similar to a hostage situation, someone posts posters for a a LAN, and people only really turn up because they know other gamers are going to turn up.
People don't discuss games in convo much unless they know that the other people are gamers, so we have to improvise with other means.

Funny when you talk about WoW, koreans are pretty good in that aswell (no suprise). I remember half a year ago there was this Arena tour during some big lan event. And the best PvP team (Nihilum PvP) went against some korean team. Eventually Nihilum team lost, and after that game, commentators asked how they felt etc, and they were like "there are way better arena teams in korea, we were just lucky to get qualified to this tour".
During LANs, my most people dont want to play SC only cuz they know they will get owned. And that when they dont, their games take FOREVER, and they cba to play SC cuz of that. Basically what killed SC in my neighbourhood.

Do you also remember how warrior / druid / lock was completely dominant for months over all the much more "skilled" korean rmp teams? The game is not built for extremely high level play. There were even endless jokes that the reason the korean teams didn't dominate was because the gcd hindered their apm.
meh, i know about 5 people in real life that play iccup, in my city.
people i play starcraft with react by telling apm jokes.
people that dont play sc but play a variety of other games say " how can you not get bored of playing only one game?" And also make a graphics statement sometimes.
and people that dont play games have very varied reactions, all depends on their personality and relation to me i guess.

No one is really into the competitive scene, and now that I've been playing for the last year, I'm better than all of them. Since they're all gamers, they also have an understanding of how much work progamers put into their practice.

I've found it pretty easy to get people (not really nerdy ppl) into sc. Not as into it as I am, but people enjoy watching games with me and such. It's just that thing that other people know I'm crazy about and watch while I don't know shit about champions league or basketball cup or whatever.

I hate when people fucking think everything is a rush. I'm on 2 bases with like 8 facts pumping purely zealots and I attacked with about 3-4 control groups as he is taking his second base with half a dozen hydralisks and he's like "What the fuck man. That's so cheap, fucking vulture rush." Me: "... Dude we are like 10 minutes in, how is that a rush?" Him: "Well I wasn't ready, I didn't have anything. It wasn't fair." Me: "So what do you want me to do, wait for you to tell me your ready, and have me tell you exactly what I am going to do?" Him: "Whatever man, I'm gonna go play some DotA..." Me: "..."
While I'm playing people often just stand there and watch and point at me. "Holy shit, guys look, he's like a fucking Korean, his hands are like *insert retarded flailing of hands on keyboard and mouse* that."

I experience this often, when I play and warm up early game, but mine is a bit toned down.
They try to whisper and do minimal pointing, gamers here are really shy and gm when approaching people in shops, but when it's online they're the most bm guys you'll ever meet. So there was a guy beside me who just finished a dota game with friends and he saw me play. Before I know it, about 4~5 guys we like leaning to watch. They were really gm and kept the pointing at a minimum, maybe because I usually have the CJ face while playing so they thought that I'll tear them apart or something. The this is that I don't even reach 200 as an average, I'm around 140-180ish.

You can say that for the United States also. Nobody plays PC games. NOBODY!!
wtf you talking about? Soooo many people waste their lives on tf2 and wow. Its just that no one plays starcraft anymore.

After reading many of the post's, I had many of the same reactions, but among my close group of nerd friends (4 of them) I've gotten them to start playing, its funny cuz they're all so newbish (they started like a month ago) and they already have rivalries and shit, and they ask me stuff about the game, like "how do you stack mutas" etc... So my close friends know a bit about Starcraft, but just about everyone else is like "Oh you play starcraft? okay im going to go over there now."

Ugh? Just because she doesn't care about sc you would break up with her?
Translation on what she said: I don't give a shit about your hobbies

Oh lol.
It doesn't matter anyway, that classmate won't get into ReCharge's league in a few days lol.
4+ years ago I used to get: Oh yeah, I used to play, that game rocks I don't play video games I haven't played but I heard it rocks Yo we should totally play
Nowadays, I get: Hey SC2 looks cool I don't play video games I heard that Koreans play for a living Yo we should totally play, oh you follow the pro scene? OK I get 6 comps allied with me
Maybe I just hang with older people, I don't get a lot of the "oh this game's graffix look like crap," and almost everyone I know that plays games has atleast heard of SC, and most of those people have at one point played it.
My little brother kept saying that i was addicted to SC, after letting him try it i had to turn off my computer while he was playing to get him to stop.
Most people just dont care or just vaguely knows of its existance, my friends just applaud me for moving on to a newer game. Also the good ol the more advanced graphics the better the game must automatically be mindset! (thus starcraft must suck ofc.)
I always get the "Oh SC i used to play that i was awesome at that game". I wish i could find someone in Indiana that actually plays but i dont think there is anyone. Oh well at least im #1 im my state WOO! ;D

Every person I play I usually own though, despite me being D- in skill level...
i think that was me.. is that uni CQU in brisbane? i was watchin proleague at the uni coz internets here in australia are limited causes too much to download at home.. we should play sometime.. lol

Other acquaintances of mine just talk about the bad graphics or they always ask if its world of warcraft for some reason.
my gf always talks shit on me and assumes i just wanna play starcraft when ever i dont wanna go out.

There's a few of us in Indiana, don't get ahead of yourself also, from?
as for the topic: there's a lot of people who have no idea what it is but, the people who do have some respect that I even play RTS let alone a game that's nearly 11 years old.
There's some people in my school that hate it. But, we did start playing it during our break period in my trade shop, and we ended up spreading Starcraft throughout the whole school. except now the LAN is all 1v1 BGH matches and no one can find legitimate matches.
You can fucking 12 hatch and the second you get the zerglings from your pool into their base they say "iCCup maps suck noob. play bgh' then leave. So now my school is like bnet...
But yeah, people seemed to take a liking of it after over 10 years of it being out it seems. lol

i never ever relent or ever believe any BS about how cool it is. as a result, i cannot tell you how many people i've gotten to watch starcraft. At my college harvey mudd (~800 students), I managed to get ~300 to show up for the MBC and OSL starleague finals on 4 different occasions (all starting at around 1am).
fuck yeah, starcraft pride for life
anyone embarrassed about starcraft should just remain OUT OF CONTROL enthusiastic and optimistic. if they don't get it, don't get defensive, don't get sad, just fucking make them understand
fuck yeah this game rules
Day pretty much nailed it for me. I'm obviously not as eccentric has he is but it's the same idea. Everyone I tell I play SC ends up playing it or understanding why I still play it an appreciate it. As long as you are confident in what you're saying about it and can explain how it is the best RTS ever in a clear and concise way people will give your opinion a shot. I've gotten everyone I've mentioned it to to install and play sc. Everyone, no exceptions.
Well i try to get ppl to play SC but they r just too stupid.
No one can say i am a nerd because i could own them in the dance floor with the hotest chicks (That is if they could get in the club in first place)
And for the adutls i have Castro. Castro used to live in Bolivia sponsored by some corp. so he made a living out of SC right here in Bolivia, not in a country on the other side of the world.
And when Castro wins a Zotac, its like heaven because 100 euro its twice as much as the regular salary in Bolivia.
So i only have to say: I love Starcraft.
"I am the best with chicks cuz i play SC" Owns "I am the best at sports cuz i play SC" owns
To the chicks it goes like this: me "i play Starcraft" her: "its a video game you shouldn't take it seriously" me: "i don't take YOU seriously, i just want sex, Starcraft will do the rest"
To the hardworking 30 yolder him:"while you were playing i earned some money working" me:"while you were working, Castro earned more than you do in 3 months and Bisu earned more that you do in 3 years just playing sooooo WHO do you think i should take as role model?
Its really hard to make this 19th century culture get into Starcraft or at least into progaming. So i just treat them like shit for not doing so.
Don't know about you guys but whenever I talk about Starcraft to people who mock video games or just know nothing about it they always end up amazed and or owned.
I go to a tech school so it's not that weird for people to hear that I play Starcraft. Most of the people I know just say things like "oh yeah I know that game/used to play it, it's cool".
Just none of them play it on the level of like, iccup and browsing TL like I do. D: When I try to talk to them about that, is when I start to get the weird looks.. haha.
Most of my friends played SC at some points (missions usually) and one of them is even very decent in this game, C+/B- player on iCCup so I talk about SC with him very often and it seems other mates like to listen as well.
My dad tho doesn't understand why I am playing 10 years old game, but I shown him some VODs and how popular game is in other countries (especially in Korea) so he was a bit confused and in same time curious so he even played few games of SC to see how game looks.
Few days ago I "recruited" my younger bro to play as well, so we had some great time in LAN last few days.
Too bad net caffee-s around here don't have SCBW installed, would be fun to play from there, people surely would go "omg what is that old and stupid game?". :-)
