Ever since i started playing SC hardcore, I began to see things a little different. The people around me weren't just people anymore. They changed. Since i go to high school still, i see a lot of people regularly. In the halls, In the classroom, ect, ect. So my friends and I decided to make life a little more star crafty :D. This one fat obnoxious girl, we named " The ultralisk". Whenever we pass her we get killed. UNLESS we have our Arbiter ( friend) near us. There are siege tanks, devourers, lurkers. all wondering our school. Life just got a little more fun =)

How did star craft change your life?

It's made me work hard at perfecting something for the first time ever. It's also made me broke, miserable and sick several times, but there have been times when it's led me to do surreal things that no other foreigner has ever done here in Korea. (Well at least not for a long time unless I'm sorely mistaken.) It's also filled my room with stuff

Oh and at my old school it gave me many laughs due to the students who used to roll round on the floor doing impressions of reavers, siege tanks and zerglings.

Starcraft taught me the meaning of hard work. How if you wanna get good at something, you have to be dedicated to it and enjoy it.

You know...

When I saw the thread title, I figured, maybe the challenges of competitive starcraft taught you to try harder at the other things in your life that you're interested in, like academics, or a sport, or a playing an instrument, and gave you a sense of fulfillment whenever you accomplish something, whether it's winning an exhausting, heavily contested game on Destination, hooking up with the hot chick at school, or getting into a good college or something...like it did for me.

But sweet Jesus, I hope this phase of your life ends soon.

I hear a lot of shit around me, more observent than most people I really interact with. I'm a sick driver and I got the light timings down for most of my city. I think it's cause BW. Also notice when people do dumbass shit like speed up to a red light then slam on breaks~ I think it's mostly a gamer thing, people that play video games just pay attention to more shit. That goes a long in day-to-day life when you realize how oblivious many people are to whats going on around them.

I think that people who play Starcraft allot (1v1 only) are smarter in games, but also in life, you learn to think in advance!

conclusion : People who play(ed) Starcraft on competitive base, have an advantage compared to people who never did.

Actually,

I recently got back into Brood War in the last year or two. It was my first exposure to serious StarCraft, so I decided to give competitive SC a try via ICCUP.

As my macro and micro improved, I also saw a connection to everything outside of game. My multitasking in general improved dramatically.

I'm a manager in real life so on the work floor is where I noticed the biggest difference. Needless to say, those who work under me hate it but at least now they earn their pay in its entirety.

Edit: I don't know if I would consider this a change in 'view' on life though. I don't really know what view on life StarCraft would change. lol

For me, it led to the insight that the world consists of three races that are incapable of living together in peace. Differences in culture, government structure and technology will always be a source of agitation, even within a single race. Thus, because of playing Starcraft, I now realise the multicultural society is merely a dream that leads to nightmares. Peace will only then prevail when but one race survives this intergalactic struggle.

SC has completely redefined skill depth for me. After playing SC you really understand the difference between being "good" and being "great" at something. So many people who have never played competitive video games think they are awesome at so many things, whether its a particular video game, chess, poker, etc. But they are often simply average and haven't realized this. Watching pros play and be so good at something that "seems" easy (a computer game) has completely changed the way I see skill and ability. I no longer automatically assume I'm good at something, or over-project my skills, because whatever I am talking about may have a similar skill depth as SC and a community like TL.

Same when i played WC3 :D I also felt incredibly humbled after watching pro Guilty Gear for my first time.

But after i moved to SC, i known that all other games are significantly inferior to SC, esp WoW. The only problem is that too few people (around me at least) are aware of it

Most importantly, it saved me from the depths of DotA (the worst part is where the game ethics is quite the opposite of SC, where finishing and the game is preferred. I feel like quitting even if i'm winning sometimes) and comparitively boring WC3. All of which is possible thanks to TL!

Oh ya, and i've just started to read Sunzi's Art Of War, It's amazing how similar it is to SC, where applicable.

And i've became a little inclined towards Korea ~ just like some korean drama fanatics ~

I definitely agree with this as well. I think this is also something you can't really explain to someone (Or at least, I've never succeeded in doing so). They must experience it to truly appreciate the phenomenon. Either through SC or something with a similar situation.
Their are four errors in this sentance.

There is only one RTS, Starcraft, everything else is trash.

That is what one finds out after they have touched starcraft, no other RTS compares to it. Even if you tried another one, you'll drop it after an hr or two and go back to Starcraft, at least from my experience.

Starcraft has also helped me save money!!! WOOT WOOT, since all other RTS suck compared to it, I don't buy them ROFL ..

I was a total slacker before I found pro Starcraft. Working hard at Starcraft taught me how to work hard at stuff in general. I'd never admit it in real life, but a video game did actually make a pretty big change in me.

Starcraft is something I enjoy now, as much as I enjoyed when I was 10 years old, and that's a pretty big deal in my opinion. Maybe when I'm fifty I'll reinstall SC:BW instead of buying a sports car

Starcraft directly affects my mood for the day. For example: if i lose 10 straight games in a row on iccup i feel pretty shitty and don't feel like doing anything that day. And if i lose a 40 minute game that i should've won i feel even shittier. If i win 10 straight games i feel pretty good for the rest of the day. It just made me really competitive.

On a side note Empyrean is a loser and anyone who quotes him again is a bigger loser. You don't have to read every forum on TL and if you think this one is a waste of your time then don't post in it. The kids got love for SC leave him alone.

I think above all Starcraft taught me that it doesnt matter what others think, all it matters is that if you love something you should be passionate about it regardless of how soceity shackles you with its pointless cynicisms. Then you'll have a really great, rewarding time. This blind drive when it comes to certain things I love is a trait of me I really like, and has led me to some great things in life so far, and to think a lot of it is attributed to my involvement with a computer game.

StarCraft is a tool I used to fuck my development as a person.

I would have found something else if it wasnt for SC tho.

But one thing SC showed me is the enormous potential of multitasking.
I can do so much things at the same time now.

It has made me realize that we live in a finite universe. There is always a "best" way to do something, and that we are a society based on results.

Can we reach into infinite? No. Life sucks. ty sc.

I've become more analytic than I normally am, I've realized that practice is the best way to do stuff, the best way to learn is step by step, block by block. It's taught me to be good mannered and light about things. I like to think I'm more confinement, but I'm not to sure about that.. Umm thats all I can think of atm.

sc led me to poker. poker is a great source of income where i don't have to answer to anyone and i create my own work schedule. i wouldn't be good at poker without the 8 or so years i spent learning bw and forming that strategic and analytical mindset where I feel no emotions.

i guess bw made me intellectually stronger, and made me look at things with a more open mind.

You need to grind your basics. You need to set goals, without goals you wander and get lost. Basically I make comparrisons with starcraft, and I'll be like "what would I do if this was about starcraft"

Starcraft always kept me going when I had nothing to do, the fansites became a daily place to visit together with the daily news. It taught me how to accomplish things, not just by winning games but by creating maps, playing with friends, forming clans and fooling around over battle.net. It has also shown to me that if you want something - it's always better to try and get it yourself other than just sitting alone waiting for it. I started to play when I was ~10 years old so it also taught me english, I met friends from other countries so I now know bits from many parts of our world. Starcraft has always been this friend that is not just a game, it's a name for something filled with love and hate - the best of two worlds. (well three, Terran, Protoss, Zerg)

Edit: Also when I was in a ruff period of my life Starcraft literally became my friend and when I finally broke free from the depression I did not need my Starcraft friend anymore. A year later it found me again, we've been friends since. <3

The game itself teaches you about multitasking, doing one thing at a time very precisely and quickly, and being very attentive to things, and I think it helps in life. Watching pro players teaches you how to behave in a stressful, competitive situation where something very important is at stake. There is one player especially, BiSu[Shield], with his neutral expression and calm, decisive manner, who made me aware of the importance of controlling your emotions in situations where you have only one chance to show your best ability e.g. while taking exams in an academic environment, the driving license exam, and many other things.

Kinda awkward silence after it.

I learnt that any idiot can play halo or need for speed, but it takes a skilled mofo to be pro at starcraft. There's actual strategy involved and not just mindless killing. So I feel better about myself for playing a difficult game, but I feel shitty because I know no matter how much I try, I will always be a foreigner who will never be allowed in the proleagues

Starcraft, and to some extent Magic the Gathering, showed me how much I like competition. How much I like winning a game off of my own merits. Improving my own skills as a player and competing against all types of adversaries. It gave me the integrity to accept defeat and to analyze what I did wrong and try to fix it in the future.

taught me the extent to which an activity like a sport/game could be taken and how noob I suddenly felt. also taught me to seriously shut the fuck up and listen when someone who has done something for a much longer time than me is talking.

after sc you try to see everything and measure everything by how extreme you can take it.

but the best thing it taught me is:

people who say they are good are normally very average.
people who say they are ok/not that good are usually really good.
Yea that looks just like Kang Min... amazing game sense... and uses mind games well, but has the micro of a washed up progamer.

starcraft taught me that most people are unskilled and unaware, and to be careful to not fall into that category myself. i suppose it's very difficult to understand and come to terms with the fact that even the simplest seeming things may have sick depth that 99% of the world will never begin to grasp. it is very, very easy to simply be above average at anything, but unimaginably harder to become truly good. everyone thinks they're 'good' at something - sometimes they are, more often than not their opinion of themselves is laughably inflated.

i have much less of an ego after starcraft, knowing that there is always someone better even if you give your all, someone better than that guy, someone wayyyyy better than that guy, etc. i handle winning and losing much more gracefully than before, and am more interested in learning the intricacies of and enjoying something rather than result grubbing. i tend to qualify my statements more and have no problem deferring to anyone who might be better until i know what i'm talking about.

also it's really fucked up my ability to pay attention to one thing at a time
