My Dad has been working as the head Software Developer for DoubleTwist a new program just open to the public through public beta.
The idea behind double-twist is that its one piece of software that is a kind of itunes but for every device at once. It can run zunes, Ipods, Iphones, psps, and many more, the list is ever expanding.
I personally just downloaded it and its awesome, it scans your Itunes and other such media players and puts all your music, pictures, and videos in one place, were you can easily sync it to whatever device.(It doesn't move them but just uses them from were they are for now)
Also they are coming with an update mid may, that will include features such as dragging youtube videos directly into your youtube section, uploading videos through double twist, and other neat shit.
It currently has a mac and a pc version, both are rather simmilar with a few problems here and there + Show Spoiler +the mac doesn't have a sync button yet and the pc cant drag things around
It is in beta so these problems will be fixed
It works great and is an awesome idea IMO
A little on the company from the site + Show Spoiler + Who We Are
doubleTwist Corporation was founded in Oslo, Norway by Monique Farantzos and Jon Lech Johansen (aka DVD Jon) and is headquartered in San Francisco. We are backed by several prominent venture capital firms and individual investors.
The doubleTwist team is distributed between San Francisco and Tokyo, and consists of people from eight countries, speaking more than seven different languages, from Japanese to Dutch. We collectively own more than 200 gadgets and obsessively test every single one of them with doubleTwist while sending stuff to each other and to our friends and families around the world. Why we're here
We started doubleTwist because we were disappointed by the quality of software applications offered by the major device manufacturers.
Our vision is simple: to create a unifying media platform that connects consumers with all their media and all their devices, regardless of whether they are online or offline.
We feel that just like you don't use a different browser for every web site you visit (Firefox to read the NY Times, IE to stream Hulu, Chrome to browse YouTube, etc) you shouldn't have to use iTunes for Apple products, Nokia software for Nokia phones, Sony software for Sony products, etc. The typical household today has many such devices and there is a need for a simple and powerful software that connects them.

Edit: Pm me any feedback and I'll tell my dad, also ask any questions and I'll see what I can do;

It's not really an add =[, its a free program that anyone can get, just spreading the news. I guess I shouldn't provide the option for people to give feedback to my dad cause I mean trying to help the community is clearly bad.
Don't see you posting this in people talking about other new products >_> Edit; also how is this not helping TL Im sure tons of people would like me to post it in general rather than not post it at all

doubleTwist Corporation was founded in Oslo, Norway by Monique Farantzos and Jon Lech Johansen (aka DVD Jon) and is headquartered in San Francisco. As I understand it, VC firms talk in millions of $s.
It's nice that you're just trying to help, but in the end it's still an ad for a commercial product.

The company might have a lot of money but they didn't ask me to post it, I figured it'd be nice for TL members to see this, also I repeat its free so I don't see how I'm advertising but w/e, unless a mod wants it down I think its for the good of TL to leave it up, it is a sick ass program
|
The only interest I would have in this program is so that I can delete itunes and still be able to load music/albums into my ipod. Reason being is that itunes always loads 2-3 other programs no matter what and also lags and is a huge resource hog. Does D.T. address these things?

This is a free program, and usually stuff like this is overlooked at the end of the day by the mods seeing as:
1. The poster really isn't getting anything from posting it here other than the fact his dad is working on it. He isn't directly getting anything out of it. In fact since his dad is working on it it's really more of a benefit to us as he can ask questions.
2. If it does what the poster says it does, it's legitimately useful, we have people posting here all the time asking ____ about iTunes or Winamp or something. I would probably feel different about this if he were advertising a new type of car his dad is working on or something.
3. I think we can tell from the original post it was made in good faith excitement over the fact the posters dad was working on it, not because he want to be a marketing machine. He's been here for about 6 months so this isn't like a "register and post everywhere about this" type of deal.
We have people posting ALL THE TIME to "VOTE FOR ME IN ____ ONLINE CONTEST!!!!" for possible monetary gain. This isn't that much different. I would let it slide imo.

Its a free program. He's helping his parents out sure but it seems like a very useful program. I probably wouldn't have found out about it without this thread and I doubt the ultimate success of it is going to be dramatically altered by a thread in general lol. Lets not overreact please.
~Venture Capitalist Meeting~ BigWig - So how are we going to make millions off of this?... Space[Fright]'s Dad - hmmm well we could advertise but i imagine a single thread on the popular progaming website teamliquid will be all we need. BigWig - We don't want it to be obvious though. Space[Fright]'s Dad - no problem, ill get my son to do it. BigWig - Excellent work heres a giant raise for the millions we are sure to make from back links HAHAHAHAHAHHAH!

Does you dad knows if this is going to have CoverArt support, and CoverArt Downloader? A-la-winamp?.

Can't wait to try this. I loved using iTunes (Minus importing new stuff manually D=) until there was a memory leak. It got so bad I couldn't play and listen at the same time. So I've been using winamp.
Here goes the DL =)
EDIT: So far it looks like I have a new primary media program until further notice! ^_^

I'm wondering, when you play a song and opens up in the new playlist thing, can you add songs on it w.o having to make it start the song you're adding?

It probably does what other programs, and scans your hard drive and builds a media library from the scan, so you can access all your stuff from the one program, rather than actually shifting all your files to one location.

no chance of source code I suppose? nor a port to an open OS? Portions of it are open source but for the most part No
The only interest I would have in this program is so that I can delete itunes and still be able to load music/albums into my ipod. Reason being is that itunes always loads 2-3 other programs no matter what and also lags and is a huge resource hog. Does D.T. address these things? My Dad says that it is not resource hog, but uninstalling itunes is not advised due to the fact that your library is generated through itunes, you don't however have to run it
Hrmm. How would that work? does that mean it would put my soundfiles from random game. example music and whatnot into one folder along with my music? It apparently draws from specific playlists in windows media player and Itunes, in time they are adding a specific double twist library, they will also most likely add more programs to draw from
If this thing can handle playlistas, coverart and all other kind of stuff, without FUCKING up my whole music database, then I'm all up for it.! It currently doesn't support cover-art but they are looking into that, it will not however mess up any of your music so if you are willing to live without it for the time being than it should work fine.
I'm wondering, when you play a song and opens up in the new playlist thing, can you add songs on it w.o having to make it start the song you're adding? Not at the moment (My dad is saying as hes answering this that he should probablly just add it, it'll just take him an hour or so but that won't come to the next release pack if it is added)
To all of these questions, remember again this is a beta, so stay tuned it should have a lot of revamps

so that's my little tidbit of help. probably too bulky for my use; heck even itunes is 50mb and i already thought it was a big memory hog
oh yeah i alt +ps'd those screenshots so i guess that little part above the window where you can see tl bars is also considered its window? invisible border or something? just an odd thing i just noticed

Yeah that's because some programs already register they capabilities to play some music formats, therefore when dT tries to install his codecs, he gets an error saying they are installed. I had no problem reproducing videos/music in the program though.

Hey - it's the o/p's dad in person. The short answer is not yet. In the next release you will have the ability to copy from your Zune to your hard disk, but not yet a full reverse sync, so you'll loose any playlists.

So I've been meaning to make this possible but it currently is not ... well, not in any released version. But because I saw this post I decided to just do it. You'll be able to drag new music onto the player without disrupting the currently playing song.

FYI we're fixing the intro screen -- this happens just on XP and when you've tweaked the DPI settings (if not, I'd like to know). The device helper is there to launch the app automatically when you insert a known device. You can turn this off in the preferences dialog.

yup XP & DPI tweaks here, good stuff
this thread kinda died, but i encourage others to give this program a shot. it's very good at what it does (admittedly i'm no expert on alternatives) and having devs interact directly with the community is always refreshing
DL it, try it out, let them know what you think! edit: i was gonna frontpage this on digg but i realized one of my friends already put it up there.. like 2 months ago OP is late with the news ..! lol

I've just skimmed the rest of this thread so forgive me if one of the following have already been mentioned:
-Allow user to locate non-iTunes and non-WMP music folders to add to the library =( -Give user basic controls (random/shuffle, repeat) -The playlist opens in a separate window; why is that I can't just look at the playlist and not bring up the library as well?
I understand it's a work in the process. These three were just off the top of my head. I'll edit in more when I use it next ^^

These are all great ideas and we're already starting to design the changes needed for the first and third suggestion. Can't make any promises when they'll be in code and released to the public, but they're high on our list. The random/shuffle, repeat idea is something pretty obvious and somehow slipped through -- I'll be sure to get it on the list to consider (or maybe just slip it in quietly on a weekend).
