Blizzard in talks with Microsoft for next Xbox
Blizzard's Rob Pardo has confirmed that his company has had talks with Microsoft about the successor to the Xbox 360.
Speaking at the Luminaries Lunch today during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Pardo would only state that Blizzard is actively in discussions with Microsoft, seemingly confirming the development process of new console hardware is under way.
However, other developers at the lunch have not spoken to either Microsoft or Sony about future plans, which has raised concerns that content isn't a priority for format holders as they plan the next-generation of home machines.
"How many designers in the games industry do you think they are rounding up to [talk to], because this is going to make or break them this time around," said Acclaim's David Perry.
"I'm not aware that they are putting a big amount of effort into finding out how to make the games. The people who are actually physically going to make the games are all going to get a surprise," he added.
Warren Spector, boss of Disney's Junction Point Studios and responsible for classic titles such as Deus Ex, said that he believes format holders are too concerned with the wider entertainment market to focus on games.
"I get the impression they're focusing on owning the living room," he said. "One device that lets you watch movies, television and play games and music and all that stuff.
"They're so focused on that that I'm not even sure they're thinking about the games that are going to come out. Which is kind of crazy." he added.
Pardo said that so far there's been a good reason why Blizzard titles such as World of Warcraft haven't appeared on home consoles – the hardware hasn't been specifically designed around some genres.
"There are are so many games like we make at Blizzard that we don't take to consoles because they don't support the input device and you end up with crappy ports. That's why RTS games never do well on consoles," he said.
"If I was them, I'd be sitting around trying to figure out what's a cool input device that supports all types of new kinds of games."
I wonder what they'll port to the next Xbox, or what new franchise will launch with it. I just hope another flop doesn't come out of this like the dread StarCraft on the Nintendo 64 (as cool as it was for the first 5 minutes, it sucked). This could be a really smart move on Blizzard's part because they could reach out to a lot of gamers that prefer consoles over PCs for various reasons (don't have to upgrade, don't have to build, easier to use, and such).

Blizzard + Microsoft = End of all other corporations. If you threw Apple in there, it would be the end of the world.
On topic: If this happened before WoW came out, I would be nervous. Most of Blizzard's games are RTS's (subtract diablo) and obviously RTS's and consoles are like Titanics and icebergs. But since Blizzard has shown they have been able to make great games that reach out to a wider spectrum of people (ie non-RTSers), I am really digging this idea and I hope it happens.

"There are are so many games like we make at Blizzard that we don't take to consoles because they don't support the input device and you end up with crappy ports. That's why RTS games never do well on consoles ... If I was them, I'd be sitting around trying to figure out what's a cool input device that supports all types of new kinds of games."

It seems to me that microsoft has gotten in touch with blizzard to see how they can make consoles more friendly for pc games/RTS.

They already stated that their new mmo wont be based on warcraft, starcraft or diablo universes and that there will be a new universe created for this new mmo which is totally secret and non gay.

Sounds like a good idea, because console controllers suck for playing a game of any genre atm imo.

i heard a variation of this. I heard it will not be like WoW, as in, the point of the game will not be focused on leveling and then gearing up the toon. where'd you hear that it won't be based on a current blizzard universe?

It was going to be the best game ever made. Even better than the game that it took the story from.

Sort of a tangent... but has anybody been playing around with XNA? I'm writing a 2D shooter right now. I had to pay $50/4-months just to run it on the XBOX (while in development!!!). And only other subscribers to the Creator's Club can play my game. It's kinda gay (the bad kind).

They were talking about some support plugin thing, which would probably mean some sort of keyboard/mouse or something very similar in-order to make RTS's more playable on consoles.
Further news needed for more information.

A quick google search provides this: Blizzard's "secret project" is confirmed to be a new MMO with a brand new universe, but we won't hear anything about it before a while.

No it wasnt going to be that great. There is no way it would have been better than the games in genre that are pretty good. UT1-3, CS, Q3, Halo. etc If it was better than any of those games in any regard than i would be just tottaly shocked.
And blizz realized this and scrapped it.

I honestly doubt anything will come out of this. For one thing, Blizzard is not the only developer in talks with Microsoft regarding the new console.
And for another, Blizzard has attempted a "return" to consoles several times, first by porting some of their PC titles onto consoles (Diablo, StarCraft and WarCraft II were all ported) and then by trying to make a console game from the ground up (StarCraft:Ghost). All of them preety much failed and after the Ghost debacle, Blizzard simply gave up as illustrated in this interview:

hmm a while back, blizzard sent out a newsletter asking fans if they would be interested with a starcraft on ds and diablo 2 on psp. hardware wise it's feasible, though the lack of hotkeys would make it pretty casual. but still, can u imagine, sc 4v4 anywhere? O.O
though diablo 3 seems like it could come out on 360 or the next gen console.

Starcraft: Ghost was supposed to be a stealth infiltration, etc game. Not a pow pow FPS.
