6-year-old misses bus, drives self to school; learned from GTA. + Show Spoiler +
When I first read this, I was like, "no frakin' way..." But then it's from Associated Press, so ok, let's get on with the details. It can't get any more hardcore than this!
Monday morning in Virgina, a 6-year-old kid missed his school bus. What's a kid to do? He's about to be late! Well, obviously, take your family's car and get your tardy butt to the campus, of course! And that's just what the kid (name undisclosed, so we'll just call him "Lil Nicky" - you'll know why in a bit) did.
While his mother was asleep, "Lil Nicky" took his family's Ford sedan and drove to school. For the most part, the drive was surprisingly uneventful. In fact, he actually made it almost six miles before getting into an accident. According to the report:
He made at least two 90-degree turns, passed several cars and ran off the rural two-lane road several times before hitting an embankment and utility pole about a mile and a half from school.
Ooh, and he was so close!
The fortunate thing is that no one was seriously hurt. "Lil Nicky" was brought by the cops to the hospital for a bump on his head and was eventually taken to school after lunch. Now here's the interesting game-related bit.
The kid explained to the police that he learned how to drive by playing Grand Theft Auto (they didn't seem to specify whichGTAthough) and Monster Truck Jam. County sheriff Chuck Wilkins notes:
He was very intent on getting to school. When he got out of the car, he started walking to school. He did not want to miss breakfast and PE.
Well, you can't blame a kid for seriously wanting to go to school.
Meanwhile, the parents of the 6-year-old are both charged with child endangerment, and the kid and his 4-year-old brother were both put under protective custody. The mom (Jacqulyn Deana Waltman, 26) is currently being held without a bond, while the father (David Eugene Dodson, 40) was released on a US$ 5,000 bond.
Yeah, kids are just so amazing these days. If they're not fighting battles in court to legalize hedgehogs, they're driving themselves to school.
ya he already learned how to drive, pick up hookers, use military weapons, kill cops, fly helicopters, run people over, now he just wants to learn how to get away with it, cant miss school~

I guess if the car has automatic transmission and is set to the DRIVE state the fuel pump pumps some fuel into the cylinders and you only need to steer the wheel. It'll be slow as fuck but it'll move.
I don't see how can they keep the parents responsible for this though. It really can't be the whole story.
I don't get how they can be charged with child endangerment. Are you putting your child in harm's way by having them walk out the door by them self to catch the bus that stops right in front of your house?
As for "how did he drive" I think that his feet might reach if he stood up on the floor. A standing kid just might have the reach for the pedals while keeping his eyes above the steering wheel.
^ Oh okay now I understand why she in jail and the kids in protective custody.
Other then that it seems like a bright kid. Shit for all I care maybe with a lil bit of counseling the kid should be let back with his parents. It's not like his parents were forcing him to stay home and play GTA. For all we know it coulda been his father/mothers video game which he would sneak onto to play every now and then. The kid was at least trying to make it to school without waking up his mother.
I drove my dads car when I was 5 years old. As soon as he saw me speeding away he chased after the car and opened the door and stopped the car. I got SUCH a bad whoopin' immediately afterward. I understand how that kid must feel.

a 6 year old playing GTA or the insane desire to go to school???
rofl. Yeah. That kid wants to learn real bad.
Must have been asian.

But on topic, I think the kid is a genius in the making. It'd make an even more interesting story if he actually made it to school. Hahaha.
I noticed but did the math and if anything either she was 18-20 years old when she met the guy which woulda made him 32-34. Which led me to assume that either this female just had low self-esteem to have a family with a man almost twice her age. Not much of a pimp but more like a chester the molester that got inside a young girls head. Let them be.
lol what the fuck? This is so hilarious/odd. The strangest question that comes to mind is why the hell is a 6 year old THAT motivated to go to school? And why is he playing GTA?
and even if the mom had an existing thing against her, I don't see how she can get owned for this :/ How is anyone supposed to stop a 6 year old who is that motivated
I guess these "Previous issues" are not our concern or not that big of a deal, that's why they didn't post them. But now I am curious :/!
that kid is so pro. driving at 6. wanting to go to school. waking before his parents do. getting his parents in jail without them even moving out of bed. well, i guess that last one isn't as good to the parents.
if you use rule of 7, she met the guy way too young, and she's still too young for that guy by a year. which makes sense if the dad is trying to train his son to be just as pimp as he is, play GTA and only GTA from when you're born until you're on da streetz yo.
Nothing wrong with young boys playing GTA, or watching badboys for that matter. If some children know how to react to such a situation it is the children who play games like GTA whom are once who can find the differ, I think it is good that he have been playing it. He knows the police is coming after him if he dose something wrong.
Personally I have always been giving primission to everything with an age limit, and for good. I know how to stay calm even in danger, I think it is because I have gained experience from the games and movies from an early age.
Secondly the game learn him that if he drove people down the police will track him down and end up killing him, and I doubt he will risk that, to get to school in time.

Does anyone remember that one thread with a youtube video about the black kid that was 7 that drove his grandmas car? and he was really funny when talking to the reporter/cop.. and his grandma said she was gonna spank his bottom? LOL
Too bad he didn't play Getaway...The cops start chasing you as soon as you start breaking traffic laws in that game, though he would have driven on the wrong side of the street :D.
How the fuck can anyone defend the parents in this situation. Lets see..
1. Lets a SIX YEAR OLD play GTA...really? 2. The kid is six.. which means shouldn't you get him safe to school before anything? I can understand if the kid was older and can take himself to the bus stop and shit.
Parents probably went to jail because they obviously didn't know he was playing such a violent game.
But haha that kid must really love school. And is he a tall guy, even if he was I'm sure he still wouldn't be able to drive well.

Oh and why were their parents still sleeping when their 6 year old kid is about to go to school? Elemenatry school starts at like 9
This kid as well at that black kid are going to grow up to either be gangstas or rocket scientists. Seriously, I would never be able to get that far if I was 6.

Fucking stupid parents.
what!? that is ridiculous. 14 to play a video game is stupid. Gore is a natural part of life. It isnt unusual for young kids to see dead animals, or take part in butchering a deer or something similar, so I dont see why a little bit of fake video game gore is going to cause any damage. Censorship is retarded.
Everyone is making too big of a deal about Grand Theft Auto. There are plenty of car games that wouldn't be ridiculous for a 6 year old to play that would teach him more or less the same thing which could lead to him hopping in a real car.
Although I agree that the parents shouldn't let a 6 year old play that game.
His parents are idiots for: (1) Letting their 6 y/o kids take the bus in America by himself (2) Letting him play a filthy game such as Grand Theft Auto.
lol, funny thing is i have an inkling of what the feeling the kid had. playing gta4 from extended periods of time, when i drive somewhere in real life, it feels like a video game, i'm tempted to just start speeding. also when i see a cop i feel the same feelings that i do in gta for a bit. weird

Have fun in jail!
im sure it was a schoolbus......
According to the CNN youtube video from the first post's link, it was a school bus that he missed, not a public bus that everyone can take.
The preference of games is up to the parents; I also played GTA (3 and Vice City) when I was 7 or 8. Not saying it's a good thing to let a 6 year old play that kind of game, but it isn't something they can really imprison the parents for. I'm just wondering why the kid didn't just ask his mother to drive him to school rather than trying to imitate a video game. Just go say, "Mom I missed the bus" Sure she'll get mad, but you won't end up sending her to prison.
