this is so awesome. Thanks for these. Playing bw makes u want to know the keyboard shortcuts to everything to increase ur windows navigating APM
|
Also, I don't know if this is in there but if you press the first alphanumeric character when in a folder it will jump to it. So like C:/Program Files then press 'S' and it'll take you to starcraft (or near it anyways).
and if you keep pressing it it will scroll down through the S's. \
This is the same kind of idea when you are in your cell phone contact list.

Wow, once I memorize them I think some of these will save me a bunch of time. Thanks Charlie!

Also, someone on IRC told me (sorry I forgot who you were !!) Carnac? told me that if you hold alt when you press print screen that it will just copy the window that is on top (or in use). So you don't have to have an RPF moment lol.

I've mentioned that in every single thread where someone gets ragged on for other things opened. Either people are stupid or they like others to see what they have open. I think it's the latter.

There are a couple of useful ones in that list I didn't know about, like F2 for renaming.
|
I learned about F2 last year, helps so fucking much with mp3 files.
Another big one that I use a lot is Ctrl+Alt+Del , alt+u, alt+u . (try it)
+ Show Spoiler +i always turn my monitor off before shutting down in a hurry , and this helps cause I can't see the manual start menu way anymore.
alt+enter would help with the ID3 tags too/.

God i love side buttons. as far as renaming just click on the name in the right spot and wait and it will allow you to rename.

Ctrl+F is good for firefox too, helps you find things on a page.

Its so easy renaming MP3's I should make a video about it using all the shortcuts.
What I do is open the album folder click the first song hit f2, rename the file (in the format of ## Title - Artist - Album) once I do that I ctrl+C the 'Artist - Album' and then press enter. Down arrow, f2 rename ## Title Ctrl+V. Rinse repeat.
Or if you wanna look like a pro just rename all the ## Title first. Then go back to the top and do the ' - Artist - Album' with space before the first hyphen and just spam f2, right arrow, ctrl+V, enter, down arrow, over and over.
Then I go into properties and copy everything.
PS- make sure that in a windows folder: tools>folder options>View that hide extensions for known file types is checked for all folders (or at least the one with the MP3s). So that way you don't have to type .mp3 after everything

CTRL + ALT + DELETE is the most famous short-cut ever popularized by Microsoft. =)

Odd i don't see Windows Key, U, U which is shutdown in XP. Besides copy paste which is my side buttons also it's my most used shortcut learned it when i was a ta for my comp sci class had to shut down 50 or so computers.

The Distillers, RHCP, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Weezer and thats about it.

right click on the place where you need a new folder, then press w, then press f. There must be a better way to do this though.
|
I didn't know a lot of these. thanks.

I learned most of these when my mouse was broken for like 2 months.
I didn't even know it was possible to do so much with just a keyboard.

However, http://www.lockergnome.com/knight17/2007/09/02/new-folder-keyboard-shortcut-mdaxel_freeware_download/ there is a 16K .exe ^^ that allows you to set a keyboard shortcut to create a new folder. Haven't tried it out, but hopefully it works for you.

I don't like these tag programs. I wanna rename the files/folders/ID3 how I want them and even if I am allowed to do that with this program (by setting up my format), i'd still have to fix spelling errors, capitalize, rename each song title anyways. and you still have to put thr tracks into order and specify which is which. and I'll usually fill the comments with featured artists or producers and what not.
I'll dl and check it out though.

imo that would be more useful with creating a new TXT document. what i usually do is just leave an empty new text document.txt on the desktop, write some shit in it and then save it as something else.

Nice! I didn't know about some of these.
Keyboard junkies should also check out Vimperator.
Awesomely useful if you can learn how to use it. (You won't ever have to touch your keyboard again when using FireFox)

I abuse these so much
I cant believe this guide doesnt have a proper ctrl + w -> close window, and lists alt+enter twice (and I only use alt enter to maximize videos/dos/whatever)
also in vista ctrl+tab (or was it windows key+tab) does an alternate alttab animation that shows the actual windows

f2 for rename would've helped me a ton a while ago

Accessibility Keyboard Shortcuts • Right SHIFT for eight seconds (Switch FilterKeys either on or off) • Left ALT+left SHIFT+PRINT SCREEN (Switch High Contrast either on or off) • Left ALT+left SHIFT+NUM LOCK (Switch the MouseKeys either on or off) • SHIFT five times (Switch the StickyKeys either on or off) • NUM LOCK for five seconds (Switch the ToggleKeys either on or off)

Only obscure one I know of is the sticky keys when u press shift 5 times really fast (which i learned on accident in some flash game). Still don't know what the fuck it does though.

Actually it can handle more than just the first alphanumeric character, so in case you have a bunch of stuff that comes alphabetically before Starcraft, you can actually type star and it will go to that folder. I'm unsure of how much delay it allows between letters before it resets though.

Use this program + windows commander (total commander it's called now).
This is what i do (I like to have every song named in small letters and including the artist) step 1: mp3tag action tag to filename (i get artist - track) step 2: total commander mass rename - all lowercase step 3: mp3tag action filename to tag (i get the same thing in the tag only with small letters)
total commander also has a function to capitalize each first letter of the file name (first letter of each word lowercase), and also mass rename in case there are spelling mistakes that appear a lot of times.
I get like 200-300 new songs a month. If i were to manually rename everything I would go insane.

yeah..the F2 thing is awesome, I`ve just found it like 1-2 months ago

F2 is awesome, it only highlights the filename and not the extension as well.

Lawl @ some people not knowing F2. Some more good stuff, hope it wasn't mentioned already:
Backspace = go back (browser) or to parent folder (Explorer) Alt + double click = properties of selected item (often faster than Alt + Enter) Shift + Delete = delete, don't move to recycle bin Windows key, then Esc, then Tab to cycle through elements in the taskbar. Not really useful but w/e. Ctrl + Tab = switch to next sub-window/tab Alt + PrintScreen = screenshot current window only (PrintScreen = screenshot full desktop). The screenshot is saved in the clipboard in case you didn't know (so open up Paint or something and paste it in) Ctrl + Shift + Esc = task manager Ctrl + Pos1/Home = go to start of document Ctrl + End = go to end of document Windows + [1-4]: open respective quicklaunch item
Not a shortcut but closely related: To copy/paste from a command prompt (Win+R "cmd"), right-click on the cmd window bar -> properties -> quick edit mode. Paste text into window: right-click. Copy text from window: select it and press right-click, then it's in the clipboard. Still sucks but at least it's *possible*.
One thing to keep in mind for Explorer: When drag'n'dropping a file to the same partition/device, the action is MOVE When drag'n'dropping a file to another partition/device, the action is COPY
Firefox shortcuts: Alt + Left/Right = back/forward / = search ' = search on links only Ctrl + L = go to location bar Ctrl + K = go to search bar middle mouse button on a link (or Ctrl + click) = open it in new tab middle mouse button on a tab = close tab Ctrl + W = close tab Ctrl + J = downloads
