Poll: Which grip are you?
(Vote): Palm
(Vote): Claw
(Vote): Fingertip
(Vote): Other
(Vote): Combination/Switch it up

Advantages of the palm grip:

The palm grip is the default way many users use to hold a computer mouse, and is found to be more comfortable for a user not accustomed to manipulating the mouse by lifting it and making constant adjustments with the fingers and palm.

With the palm grip, the user will primarily move the mouse by exerting force with his forearm and wrist to “push” the mouse around the mousing surface. By using this method, the user is able to move the mouse at higher speeds, and achieve higher Inches Per Second (IPS) ratings by doing so. Some gamers fine-tune their movements by rotating and pivoting their wrists, but gross speed is still the primary advantage that palm grip users experience.

The palm grip is also considered one of the most comfortable grip styles for gaming where the gamer is able to continue playing for extended hours without experiencing fatigue.

Disadvantages of the palm grip:

As previously noted, palm grip users have a natural tendency to move the mouse with their forearm and wrist. However, in order to keep the point of contact with their palm and the back of the mouse intact, users will find it difficult to perform fine tuning with their fingers.

The number of articulation points to manipulate the mouse is also less than what the claw grip offers. This in turn means that palm grip users are unable to make as many precise movements as they can when using a claw grip

Advantages of the claw grip:

The claw grip is preferred by users who require quick, precise movements, while having the rear of the mouse stabilized by the sixth contact point in the pit of the hand when lifting the mouse off the mousing surface.

A claw grip user will manipulate the mouse primarily by “pulling” the mouse around the mousing surface as the user’s hand is positioned above the mouse, and fine-tuning can be made by making minor adjustments with the user’s fingertips by either slightly rotating the mouse like a dial or pushing the mouse in and out of the pit of the user’s hand.

A final point to note with regards to the claw grip is that the primary and secondary mouse buttons can be actuated faster than when actuated with the palm grip. The pressure exerted by the tips of the user’s fingers positioned in the claw grip can result in quicker button actuation than fingers positioned in a palm grip. This is because fingers positioned in the palm grip require the user to use more force to actuate the mouse button due to the increased surface area each finger has to press down on.

Disadvantages of the claw grip:

Because most users have a natural tendency to palm their mouse, using the claw grip does not feel as natural to certain users and a learning curve is required to adjust to the claw grip.

Additionally, since the user is moving the mouse with his fingertips, fatigue can set in faster if the user does not possess refined fine motor skills with their fingertips and wrist. Because of this, the user will experience fatigue sooner and fine motor control will deteriorate, quickly affecting the user’s ability to move his mouse accurately.

Advantages of the fingertip grip:

The fingertip grip is similar to the claw grip, in the fact that users prefer quick, precise movements, but differs because the user wants increased agility.

A fingertip grip user will also “pull” the mouse along a mousing surface, but since the rear of the mouse no longer makes contact with the pit of the user’s hand, the user can make further adjustments and tweak the mouse with his fingertips when compared to the claw grip.

Also like the claw grip, the primary and secondary mouse buttons can be actuated faster with the fingertip grip when compared to the palm grip.

Disadvantages of the fingertip grip:

With the fingertip grip, users will experience the most amount of hand fatigue as there are now only five points of contact with the mouse, and the user will be required to use more effort in controlling the stability and precise movements of the mouse.

The fingertip grip also requires the highest learning curve for most users, as the exaggerated arched fingers and increased amount of control over the mouse needs to be practiced.

I Think I am a fingertip/claw grip guy. It kinda depends on the mouse, these ones here at work are small basic so its always a fingertip grip because my hand is bigger.

But yea, I notice I get really fatigued hands after intense/long games. And I definitely like the added precision of finger grip.

I'm voting Fingertip.

Also upon further reading Here found that I liked the Krait and Salmosa mice best based on stats and look and just read that these would be best for fingertip grip users.

PS- Why are there no starcraft players quotes about their grip types on any of these? Stupid!
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

Since I'm an instrumentalist I'm pretty used to making fine movements with my fingers, thus the fingertip is just the natural position for me.

I find it does give me good control in all sorts of situations, especially since I use fast and precise mouse movement to make up for my bad hotkeying habits.

Edit: Oh wow, apparently I have one of the least recommending mice for fingertip style, being that it's a huge old microsoft mouse.

Finger tip it's why my mouse is a G9 Short Wide mouse made for right hand i.e. the only way to grip it with a hand of my size is just moving it useing finger tips.

I used to be a palm when i played fps alot

In SC, war3, or even dota I use fingertip. In everything else like CS I use my palm, voted fingertip though ;D

Combination between fingertip and claw for starcraft, combination between palm and claw for FPS.

I don't like the claw grip in their shots, it's way too arched, but I do like a bit of arch in my mouse hand.

I'm a palm gripper. I had never realized the difference between grips like this. I mouse for 8 hours a day at work, so I find that a grip that doesn't fatigue my hands is very important. To this end, I find my Deathadder to be a very comfortable match to my style!

fingertip. it feels the most natural because it gives you more control, also, it takes less effort to move. actually i'm more in between finger and claw, i dont do some crazy tiger fist grip but i dont lay my fingers flat either.

ps that guy has small hands

Yea I use only my fingers to hold/control the mouse with a slight arch in the pointer/middle and my palm/ thumb slightly touches the left back of the mouse.

I use the palm grip, as a result I like big fat mice that fit my hand. Though it's not a gaming mouse, I find the Logitech MX Revolution really comfortable for palm gripping with my hand.

Yeah, that sounded eerily similar to the cheesy progamer quotes Razer has on their site there.

Anyone wonder if there are any SC players who use the palm/claw grips? I feel like I've only seen fingertip in VODs.

yeah, it's pretty much impossible to not have any arch in your fingers otherwise you couldn't move at all with your fingers. what's up with that razer?!?!?

Yeah the photos they show looks extreme almost like a claw gripper pushes the buttons with his finger tips. imo diff from claw and fingertip is when your do normal movements do you move it with your hand or with your fingers. I have a wrist rest so i have a inclination to only move my wrist at max and i usually don't have to. Frankly i think the diff is that a claw grip user moves the mouse with his arm in general but usually off sets it by useing his fingers for finer position. While a fingertip would be more inclied to just rest his or her wrist or bottom plam on the desk and only make small movements. If that makes any sence

Doesn't stay and it gums up the desk. I actually drilled a screw in the corner of my desk and I wrapped the cord around it with rubber bands, worked great. (but I broke the screw off on accident)

They recommend the Lachesis for palm-grip gamers, but it doesn't have the arch support for it. If you use a palm grip, I wouldn't buy a Lachesis like I did. I've been trying to get used to a claw grip by using the mouse at work, but it hasn't been helping since I don't play games or even use the mouse much while working.

Well I certainly don't bend my fingers as much as their illustration of the claw grip, but maybe that's just to make a point, or my G5 mouse is bigger than the razer mouse they used ;o

Anyway. Claw I guess.

EDIT: Actually when I move around I guess I kinda do bend my fingers a bit ;o

After checking my hand a few times while browsing it seems like I use all 3. But when I'm playing bw I use something in-between a claw and palm. I use a krait.

I don't move my wrist when I use my mouse. But my palm sticks to the back of my mouse because I maxed my mouse sensitivity.

I guess that makes me a claw

Fingertips when playing BW, palm for most other things. Seems like how you hold your mouse will to a large degree depend on what mouse you are using and how big your hand is. I would probably use the claw if I had a tiny mouse.

I was just thinking about this today. I use palm grip but I was thinking of changing either my grip or my mouse because my hands are big. Too bad the comments on the razer site don't help at all.
Fingertip:
"Since I have huge hands, this is the only comfortable way to hold the mouse for me. I use medium sense in Windows and in shooters; about 20cm for a 360° turn."

“I hold the mouse with the tips of my fingers. I have tiny hands and I guess it’s easier to grip the mouse this way.”

Does anyone use their middle finger for mousewheel and ring finger for right mouse button? I was thinking of trying it out but even with my logitech mouse my middle finger is way too long.

fingertip

for example, I use a mouse at work that rests on the table. Most co-workers can't use it because the table is too reflective and their normal method of "mouse movement" makes it uncomfortable. However, with my fingertip control I can compensate for any inaccuracies caused by the table surface reflecting and I have NO PROBLEMS! It's very... dynamic...

SC has made me uber pro at mouse control.. how does this reflect on my sex life? Poorly...

I really wanted a bigger opponent, like Nate Marquardt, or King Neptune, or Zeus, or Zeus and Fedor, or Fedor on Zeus's shoulders, and they can both punch but only Zeus can kick.

Probably a hybrid between palm and claw. I do have big hands, but then again, I also have a big mouse. So it kinda mixes between.

I had fingergrip when I used to use rodent mouse. I've switched to trackball mouse and it resembles clawgrip more.

i actually had to check.. it just seems natural to hang like that, palm restricts too much movement and claw is gonna tire out your fingers no? keeping them up like that..

These are some interesting claims..
I don't find fingertip grip fatiguing at all. o.O
Plus, it's what I thought was the most natural way to grip a mouse as soon as I started playing games.

palm works fine for fps if your not the pussy homo in a coner with his sniper rifle it's also good if your use razer mice alot of them have huge humps on their back ment for palming also cuz their sides are curved to the bootom so make the part touching the pad smaller. Dimondback, copperhead etc like that isn't ment for finger grip.

Right now I'm palm because I can't find a really good small/mini mouse to use. I used to have one but the scroll button broke on it and I can't use it effectively in some games. If I could find one I would definitely go back to claw.

I use the claw grip. Makes sense, I find it the most accurate out of the grips. But man, my wrist dies after long periods of intensive use.

Well also alot of sc player i would assume be finger and razer mice aren't friedly for that only a few have sides to the mouse in which you can firmly grip etc. I mean if i try useing finger grip on my dimonback 3g my thumb and pink drag on the table which is annoying.

when i read the options i thought i was clearly a palm user.

but then when i read the comments about having to 'move your forearm/palm' to move the mouse i was very confused. why would anyone use the mouse in such a way that they'd have to move their palm? that's stupid.when i read the options i thought i was clearly a palm user.

so then i actually watched my hand as i moved the mouse around the screen and realized that since my palm stays in one place and i only move it with my fingertips that it would make me infact not a palm user.

so i'm just like the majority - somewhere in between fingertip and claw. i'd say the right side of my hand more acts like my 'palm' as i tilt the mouse slightly to the left and the right side is in contact with the mouse about 50% of the time.

Doesn't stay and it gums up the desk. I actually drilled a screw in the corner of my desk and I wrapped the cord around it with rubber bands, worked great. (but I broke the screw off on accident)

So you don't wanna mark your desk with tape which you can clean off with alcohol, but instead opt to drill holes into it

Claw / Fingertipps.. depending on Mousesize :p.

My Hands are big, I can't even use *palm* on normal mouses because my Finger overlap by a huge amount if I try.

I stopped buying gaming mouses some time ago... I know just buy light and small ones from Logitech. Much better than the often monstrous gaming mouses (I liked them also but I was even slower than I already am, I never was that fast but very exact so I don't need to fortify my slowness by handling a big/heavy mouse ^^)...

Got this one at the moment and it's the best mouse i had in a long time:

And yea, the tape wears off and you have to keep retaping it over and cleaning again and again. So I drilled a little screw in the very corner of the desk for a permanent solution.

For those of you who say that the way Razer represents the claw arch, it is uncomfortable for most people. I would say 95% of people aren't comfortable with doing it. Although it is natural for me to curve my fingers like that. For example, when I used to play Halo 2 competitively, I used the controller claw(and still do if i play on a console): Its when you move your index finger on top of the A B X Y buttons and your Middle finger on the trigger. http://dpad.gotfrag.com/portal/story/32997/
Another example is when I used to be into pen spinning(still do it to pass time) I used to curl my index finger in when using other fingers:
Watch the first combo

Also I use a fairly large mouse (Microsoft Optical Blue, same size as the silver one in the picture)

Razer try way too hard.

Just put your hand on the fucking mouse and use it. This data is made to look all scientific and all this rubbish to give idiot gamers a false impression that this company has done adequate 'research' into the field of 'progaming'.

It won't make you a better player, watching replays and studying BO's and playing 24/7 will.

Sorry to bump. Just wondering whether anyone uses index on button 1, middle on scroll/wheel, and ring finger on button 2 rather than the 2 finger V shown in the razor guide?

And does anyone has any thoughts on the 3 finger grip compared to the V grip?

Thanks

I have my middle resting on both the scroll wheel and the right button. I just push/pull it to scroll and can still click at any time. The only downside is that it's hard to click the scroll wheel, but that's actually a plus for me because I hate accidentally clicking the scroll wheel.

I use finger grip due to my use of a crappy small mouse. Besides I'm also into art and music and both of those are finger stuff so I suppose it makes sense. I do have "precise" mouse movements and I also get tired pretty quick.

I trust and trained my first 2 fingers, but I think if I got used to it the ring finger method that owlfeet uses would be fine with me. I think that's how I approached a mouse with a wheel when I first saw one.

If I'm playing something like SC where right mouse is used very often I keep my middle finger on it(moving it to mousewheel if necessary); I'm just more comfortable with it. But for general usage or FPS where I'll just have right mouse bound to something minor like scope and I use mousewheel constantly I do what you're describing.

What ITS CALLED TAPE YO lol

Doesn't stay and it gums up the desk. I actually drilled a screw in the corner of my desk and I wrapped the cord around it with rubber bands, worked great. (but I broke the screw off on accident)

So you don't wanna mark your desk with tape which you can clean off with alcohol, but instead opt to drill holes into it

And yea, the tape wears off and you have to keep retaping it over and cleaning again and again. So I drilled a little screw in the very corner of the desk for a permanent solution.

I have mine wrapped around my alarm clock

Palm grip, but i'm pretty darnsure claw & fingertip methods are much better ergonomically and mechanically better. Palm is like the lazy man's method.

I seem to use a cross between a fingertip and claw grip as well I hold my mouse at an angle so that my index finger runs across the left mouse button on it's way to the middle mouse button

Some mice are borderline impossible to finger grip. I used to do it then I got a bigger mouse and now I claw.

Its because he bumped a 2 or 3 year old thread for practically nothing. >.<

Oh so that's much worse than creating a new thread which would talk about the same thing. At least he/she had the decency to search it. I swear you can't even breathe on these forums without a slap on the wrist.

Anyways claw grip ftw on my zowie mico.

thanks to the massive influx of new people their job has become pretty time consuming, and things that you used to be able to do occasionally (but would get warned if you did often) are becoming too commonplace and clogging up the forums

things like necros

I'm definitely a claw man.

Always played games that way, ever since D2:LOD back in '02.

Surely it's more time consuming to warn someone.

I use claw on my DeathAdder. I have pretty big hands, and it's the way I find most comfortable and accurate with the DeathAdder. But with my mx518 I use something that's between palm and claw, but basically palm. Just because of the shape of it.

I use DeathAdder for gaming like starcraft and battlefield, where I need mouse control, but it's not as comfortable and it's more tiring. When I'm playing something like fallout, or the upcoming skyrim, I use my mx518 because it stays comfortable after hours.

I imagine if he had necro'd and actually put some kind of content into the thread, he wouldn't have been warned, but all he did was put a one-liner about what grip he uses. Doesn't do any good to necro for that reason. :/

gogo claw grip! :>

I use the fingertip method just because that was how I got accustomed to gaming from playing FPS games like Counter-Strike: Source, that require precision to get headshots, bank grenades off walls, etc.

I never know whether to bump an old thread or make a new thread discussing the exact same things. Bumping an old thread gets you a warning/temp ban while if you make a new thread, then everyone acts like you're a retard that doesn't know how to use the search function.

I use claw grip. It's also the position that is most unfortunate if you have a fingertip injury like I have now... Ouch! When browsing the web, I often use fingertip grip, but in-game I feel like I have the most speed and precision with the Claw grip.

if not posted yet, the link from OP is a bit dated/off/doesnotworkanymore haha

use/add this instead http://www.razerzone.com/mouseguide/ergonomic
personally, i'm used to the size of small mice since days of CS and when DPI was not really a stat. you looked at.

i switched to a slightly larger mouse (minioptical to abyssus optical) and had a hard time switching from what was more a fingertip/palm hybrid (since your palm can grip the tiny thing at the same time you fingers can have a firm hold of the buttons). as well it was different having the larger size the newer mouse took up on the surface of the pad (previously very limited mouse space).
these days it's a very interesting feeling and i'm very certain i switch between all three mentioned styles quite often during a long match----most commonly to palm and fingertip.
i remember when nada had a really fast palm style and i'd always end up concentrated on how fast he was clicking both buttons at once with alternating index and middle fingers, all while they tapped flat against the mouse surface.

sorry, just wanted to add... i thought moon's quote for fingertip grip was pretty kinky.. LOL

Saying "I have a claw grip" is not an acceptable reason to necro a thread, period. Searching and necroing something with nothing to add is practically asking for a warning and a thread close.

That being said, I have a claw grip.

I use fingertip I guess? I have relatively large hands so I hold the mouse between my thumb and ring finger and rest my index and middle fingers slightly bent over the buttons. The palm of my hand is about an inch away from the back of the mouse
