That's an interesting questions. To be realistic, it can only be answered on a personal level. Is the film that causes you to think more real than the film that causes you to feel? Is an intellectual reaction more important than a visceral one? It's a question that can only be answered by the single viewer, and will certainly evolve over time. It all depends on how you emotionally invest yourself in the work.

last night i was watching "heat", and i was thinking about how awesome it is. a lot of people think pacino is over the top, and specifically, i've read some harsh criticism for "heat". personally i think mann's a great director, and there's psychological themes in 'heat' are pretty cool. your thoughts?

Masterpiece or overdone or other? ![]() Yeah, I'm curious to your take on this too brood, I thought The Dark Knight was really good and without a doubt the best super hero movie ever made in my opinion, however do I believe that it's the 3rd best movie ever made? (IMDB Reference) no, definitely not. It was done very nice and the acting was incredible, it's hard to compare movies in different genre's but I just think that giving this movie that high of a rating for what I see as just Heath Ledger performance is overrating it. American History X not only had incredible acting but some of the most intense incredible storyline ever made. Few movies ever draw emotion like American History X does, and even with Heath Ledgers performance I don't think it compares. your thoughts brood?

Pacino's been over the top for a long time. Mann builds great suspense though, and what makes Heat even more interesting is the backstory between the real cops involved. Heat is a great watch, but certainly not the apex of any of the creative forces involved.

The Dark Knight has certainly set the bench mark for "super hero movies". The film had no qualms about attacking morality issues, both in-your-face and very subtle. The main problem of the film, in my opinion, is that it doesn't know which questions to ask, and which ones to answer. Despite a cadre of strong performances, the film remains uncomfortably ambiguous as to it's intent. Technically flawless, I wish Ledger were around for Nolan to construct a strong follow up/

Also, there was a scarecrow. Does this mean I am going to be a serial murderer? Am I gay? seriously this is a dream that I've heard quite a lot of people having. Not exactly this with the drowning girl and the scarecrow, but on the general theme that you know something that is right, but noone else understands that it is the right thing to do. My personal theory is that these dreams are related to them getting more confident in themselves and slowly starting to realise that they actually can trust their own judgement in a conscious way. In the sence that when you are like 14 you tend to say whatever is on your mind and be pretty confident about it is some sence, but the reason that you believe everyone else are wrong is in general ignorance at that age. That is, you dont really consider their point of view at all. You may listen to their arguments, but only to prove them wrong, not to actually understand their view. Later on you learn to take in other peoples views (not only arguments) and with that comes greater confidence when you still feel your point of view is correct, and more frustration when people dont agree with you, which may cause dreams like this. Well, thats my attempt at saving the thread. ![]() + Show Spoiler + discuss.

And then the twist at the end happened and it all just came together for me and I loved it. It became a masterpiece. My hands shook, I was in shock for hours afterwards by just how good that film was. However to this day I'm really quite unsure how I feel about that film. I think it's really well done and I think the way it all comes together at the end is fantastic. However, it's like most of the film is strangely unsatisfying at the time and while in retrospect it is good I feel had I had anything better to do I'd have probably stopped watching half way. It just didn't do it for me at the time, although once I'd seen the end everything preceding it was redeemed. Does that make it a bad film?
