Not doing it. When people are wrong, they deserve pushback until they accept they are wrong. If the majority of people make bad arguments, then they're wrong. It's that simple.

So the guy got banned for, being annoying?
I'm aware that there is no real freedom of speech in places like this, but you guys all engaged with him on this ridiculous tangent, collectively derailed the thread and then banned the guy because he was being annoying to a moderator and wouldn't back down from his position?
Seems pretty silly and petty, on top of basically shutting down any relevant discussion in this thread.

I did not, I did mention that this was a ridiculous tangent and I didn't read it at all because I learned to skip large swaths of conversations here and in the other threads which come down to bickering and semantics.
I also tried, at a few occasions to bring the conversation back on topic and engage with the only other user doing the same who apparently gave up after a while.
None of that changes my question. Many times in this and US politics threads there would arise this sort of a meta conversation between a few users which wold end up in jabbing, bickering, provoking etc. This is the first time I saw one of the participants banned with no warning, so I wanted to bring it up.
I'm generally against banning unless it's spam, extremely bad faith or harassment, so I wanted to check what happened here.
Thank you for pointing me at the feedback thread, I'll check it out as I can see there is discussion of that ban there.

It shouldn't have just been him, for sure. I think our little community would benefit a lot from some actual slaps on the wrist here and there to prevent the personal back and forth that's become way too prevalent lately.

I think using bans to serve a role similar to a mute on Discord is reasonable. Give someone 6 hours to cool off a bit etc

OK, I read up on it and I guess I get it, time out seems appropriate.
What would be even more appropriate, from a perspective of a relative newcomer to these threads is a warning (first) and a notification (later) why this happened, otherwise, if we need to know about the feedback thread and read all of that in order to understand what happened in the background it's impossible for newer people to know how to moderate their behavior and learn from this.
I get a feeling from the other thread that everyone is kind of jaded and thinks nothing can be done to bring up the quality of discussion, but a bare minimum would be to post the reason for the ban as well as the duration.
