As soon as BC announced that mid-may, we might lift restrictions, it combo'd with a super nice weekend (25C, sunny) and everyone swarmed beaches and parks. Hopefully we don't get a spike in 2 weeks. If we don't though, that would be good news, since it proves to a reasonable degree that being outdoors can be done safely in BC. It might open the way to outdoor sports in close proximity. Not basketball, or other close contact sports, but maybe tennis, volleyball or similar things could be played. The exact same thing happened here in New York City, and we are ( or were at least ) the center of the outbreak. Just one warm weekend and Central Park was flooded, Even the supposedly far more vulnerable elderly were out en masse. I saw Instagram stories of other parks absolutely packed with barely a mask in sight. Infuriating. Been so stressful living here, would hate to see it spike up again. ![]()

When the sun comes out, Oregonians go into some kinda manic episode. Summer is like a ceremonial ritual over here since it is when the rain is finally gone. There is extremely little willingness to let go of Summer activities for the sake of quarantine. Even people who are normally mostly smart are clearly stupid right now. It is only the die-hards like myself who are strictly adhering to the science who are willing to toss their summer plans in the toilet. Its really sad. So many idiots.

Personally, I often see them as used tissues people strap on their faces. They are removed and put on as they see fit, hang around necks, are disposed openly in public places, one-time masks are reused and home-made masks with no docuemented effects are worn with pride. It is a good thing it is very unlikely anybody carries the virus where I live, otherwise those things would be corona-bombs! I have a hard time seeing mask users as morally superior. None of the Scandinavian countries recommend mask-use to the general public anywhere as of now. One main reason is that if you have sympthoms or otherwise fear you chould be infected you should rather stay at home. Another one is inconclusive results in studies. Yes, I am aware that many Asian experts are advocating widespread mask use, and that some western goverments might tone down their effectiveness due to the lack of supplies. I will read up it some more it I make a bigger post on this topic.

“How dare those mask wearers and those who support them claim the moral high ground!”=\=“The local health authority recommends use of masks in all public places and I and others should follow their recommendation.” No, the science behind it isn’t ironclad, but public health rules and policies that turn on shifting probabilities aren’t the stuff of moral gaming.

From what I've read most western scientists think the effect is pretty small as to preventing spread to others via mask. It prevents a casual cough from sending it 30 ft and instead keeps most of it in. If worn improperly it can lead the individual wearing it to have a higher chance of getting it. Effect is minimal either way, but I think once some scientists read "public has to be educated for this to not be counterproductive" they threw it out the window. We know masks help reduce the r0, we just don't know how much. The CDC guidelines in the US say to wear a mask, but there is no legal requirement. Ohio's governor walked a requirement back after some calls from parents with autistic children who CAN'T wear masks. So the official stance in Ohio is that you should wear one if you can, and a business is permitted to prohibit those without one from entering.

And because noone wears a mask there is a huge barrier to do so as well. You dont want to be the only person wearing a mask and have everyone looking at you like you are crazy. Beeing the only person wearing a mask probably would not help much anyway. Seeing how masks are worn in other countries (photos on the internet and on tv) then i dont think it helps much but it wont hurt either. Lots of people wear them more like a scarf, very lose, which i cant imagine beeing all that helpfull. Maybe if the whole population would wear a mask then it will help a little bit,but its very impractical in commerce and other activities. It will be obligated to wear a mask from 1 june in public transport though, when the transport system is expected to become more crowded. You can make one yourself,my friend from the uk has a family member who made masks for the whole family, she also send me a pair but i have yet to try them out. I dont think its a supply issue tbh,i guess its more subtle. While some people will feal more safe if everyone does wear a mask it also sends a bit of a negative message which can provoke fear in some other people.

Imo a very dangerous move in the current climate. Government needs to de-escalate from time to time.

Wouldn't be surprised if that's to keep newly unemployed off the streets, because no scientific evidence warrants such a duration. Imo a very dangerous move in the current climate. Government needs to de-escalate from time to time. This is a matter of public policy, informed by science. Science does not determine policy. Science informs policy. In an ideal case, a ethics is used to determine what to do based on data. Elon opens his factory and Twitter says WFH is now a permanent option for every employee. Two different sets of ethics, but likely using the same data.
