Theres something infinitely more menacing about being hit with a hammer by a teletubby with glowing red eyes...
I'll have to remember the acronym for the future, lest some cruel twist of fate happen that brings that hammer down on me, lol.
To bring it back to US Politics in order to avoid tempting fate so much;
How do people feel the US is taking this insurrection? So far we're three days out, and I'm personally a little alarmed at how quickly people's feelings about what happened seem to have deescalated. Triply so from the Republican side. I didn't think they'd pull a "lets move on" literal days after. I'm afraid we're going to be a situation where noone sees any real consequences from this. Like, the dude that got his photo taken with his feet up on Pelosi's desk is only getting a maximum of one year. I feel like this is being taken very lightly considering it was a neo-fascist (Im going to switch to neo-fascist from proto-fascist in light of the Republicans deciding they're embracing fascism) coup that stormed the US Capitol.
Am I just being uniquely pessimistic and fearful?

I asked myself "what is the worst thing Republicans can do" but I thought releasing smallpox back into the population was unlikely so I settled for more or less what is actually happening. If you are not assuming pretty much the worst from Republicans at this point you are deluding yourself. Fool me once and all that.

I have been losing it, we had a neo-fascist coup attempt, I live like an hour from DC, this is local and horrifying. Everyone in the US should be losing it over this.

the most pressing problem is this though from a yougov poll while the action was going on/inside capitol hill:
Most voters say the events at the US Capitol are a threat to democracy however One in five voters - including 45% of Republicans - approve of the storming of the Capitol building.
a bonus finding was
Far fewer voters think President-elect Joe Biden is a great deal (17%) or somewhat (9%) to blame. That being said, Biden is the biggest culprit in the eyes of Republicans, at 52%, compared to 28% for Donald Trump and 26% for the Congressional Republicans who opposed certification of the election results.
how do you ever bridge that divide? for you to change you first have to acknowledge the error in your ways. the crackdown on all fronts with police/law enforcement and social media companies is well and good - though only after the damage is already done.
it is treating a symptom rather than the problem.

Personally I am burned out. We had the high of the Georgia election followed by Wednesday's horror. Instead of unity and swift action we again see the public opinion split and political jockeying for power. I was thinking how different it might be in the old days where you had to wait days or weeks for news to travel. Would we treat this event with proper seriousness if each day was not an overwhelming flood of news, opinions, social media and click bait? We don't have time to think anymore when the news cycle churns on and a million opinions heap up, vying for interest and visibility, before we even have a chance to form one.

Its also alarmin to me that this all has died down so fast. Not only was this a coup attempt (albeit a very bad one), but a great show of an inherent difference in the way police and the whole American society treat people of color and white people. If these people were brown or Muslim, you'd be talking about invading a country right now

We should focus on the people like the man who came in with a gun and zip ties, because that is some VERY clear intent on taking hostages.
The horde may have had a lot of gawking fuckwits who were "only" stealing the Speaker of the House's podium and breaking windows, stealing assorted shit, generally desecrating the US Capitol, and waving enemy flags, but there were also legitimate people there who if they had gotten near someone from Congress was going to be doing that top level terrorist shit.

I havent kept up with cable news coverage, how are they covering it? On Twitter I'm inundated with pictures of people in their Camp Auschwitz T-shirts, their 6 Million Wasn't Enough T-shirts, the pictures of the fuckin' lynching station they set up for Mike Pence, tons of people with Nazi White Supremacist tattoos. I cant fathom that anyone who sees these things is like, "Yeah, this was no big deal."

As far as cable news, I’m not sure I only listened to the CBSNews radio* coverage live as that day unfolded

Heres to hoping they don't accept the next Trump, 'cause a big part of what I'm worried about. Its very easy to distance yourself from Trump right now, but we have to prevent the next one from getting power at all or its all over imo.

WaPo just dropped a story that outside of the infamous georgia phonecall, there was ANOTHER phone call from Trump where he asked them to find the fraud.
President Trump urged Georgia’s lead elections investigator to “find the fraud” in a lengthy December phone call, saying the official would be a “national hero,” according to an individual familiar with the call who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the conversation.
Trump placed the call to the investigations chief for the Georgia secretary of state’s office shortly before Christmas — while the individual was leading an inquiry into allegations of ballot fraud in Cobb County, in the suburbs of Atlanta, according to people familiar with the episode.
The president’s attempts to intervene in an ongoing investigation could amount to obstruction of justice or other criminal violations, legal experts said, though they cautioned a case could be difficult to prove. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-call-georgia-investigator/2021/01/09/7a55c7fa-51cf-11eb-83e3-322644d82356_story.html
