It's certainly not the best way of expressing "want to avoid a much worse life of persecution and violence through asylum". Asylum is meant to be people who are forced out of their homes, not encouraged in to ours.

They are saying if you show up and say "my life is really bad back home", they can stay, at least for a while. Then what? Deported later? Depending on what criteria? I am hearing nothing about who gets denied. Does anyone get denied?

Depending on what criteria? I am hearing nothing about who gets denied. Does anyone get denied? A significant majority denied. Seeking asylum is really hard. The problem is there are very few asylum judges and the system is massively backlogged. If they actually had a working system it would be a case of showing up, making your case at the port of entry, then getting returned back to the other side of the border with your suitcase. Instead we have people showing up and being put on a five year waitlist before kicking them back out. The nationality most commonly approved for asylum is Chinese fleeing religious persecution because they get a lot of help making their claims from churches. The gov doesn't provide any representation for asylum hearings and the judges have almost no time per case. When people think asylum seeker they should be thinking Chinese Christian fleeing religious persecution in PRC, not Mexican, but the biases are pretty entrenched.

Also Buttigieg is going to get an anomalous amount of searches related to spelling his name right, not political interest.
