And we have now canceled all over seas trips for all cabinets members too. I bet this goes through the end of the month or until a government employee dies because they can’t afford insulin or something. At least one is already rationing as of a few days ago.

This story just came out: www.buzzfeednews.com
President Donald Trump directed his longtime attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about negotiations to build a Trump Tower in Moscow, according to two federal law enforcement officials involved in an investigation of the matter.
Trump also supported a plan, set up by Cohen, to visit Russia during the presidential campaign, in order to personally meet President Vladimir Putin and jump-start the tower negotiations. “Make it happen,” the sources said Trump told Cohen.
And even as Trump told the public he had no business deals with Russia, the sources said Trump and his children, Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr., received regular, detailed updates about the real estate development from Cohen, whom they put in charge of the project. It has yet to be verified by any of the major news folks, but the authors of this also had several stories about the Trump Tower meeting in the past that turned out to be true either soon after or in some cases months down the line.
I'm skeptical of the story as of right now, but if it turns out to be true this is potential a glimpse of what the endgame of the Mueller investigation is or potentially how damaging Cohen's testimony on February 7th could possibly be (with rumours already going around that Trump's lawyers are quite worried about it). In the article they say that Cohen told the special counsel (and the information was corroborated by other witnesses) that Trump explicitly told him to lie to Congress and that Trump and his kids were far more involved in the Moscow Trump Tower project than they are suggesting (even there being a potential meeting between Trump and Putin in 2016 about the tower).
This makes Giuliani's bizarre behaviour on CNN today make a bit more sense since he was arguing about the technicalities of his past statements on Trump colluding with Russia. He was arguing that he said "President Trump" didn't conspire with Russia, but that he never said Trump did prior to becoming president.
edit: Chris Hayes from MSNBC just pointed out this quote from the article:
"The special counsel’s office learned about Trump’s directive for Cohen to lie to Congress through...internal company emails, text messages, and a cache of other documents." I must of missed it. This seems 1000x worse. Cohen saying Trump told him is one thing (since Cohen isn't really considered to be that reliable of a witness because of his past), but Trump telling Cohen to lie being documented in multiple forms of company documentation seems like an endgame situation. How does Trump defend this? Say his own company documentation is lying? And moreover, how do the Republicans defend this? This is the exact thing Nixon was going to be impeached for.

Ofc with Trump being Trump he did it in the worst possible way by waiting until the last minute. It's not like the US suddenly doesn't have money because of the shutdown, they're just not using it because the budget hasn't been agreed upon. They have zero reason to save money other than the bottomless deficit, which a trip like this is the least of your worries, while maintaining a good international relation. This is just Trump throwing a tamper tantrum because he couldn't get his way. There is nothing time sensitive about the trip. Relations arent going to go to hell because a few politicians didn't go overseas to shake a few hands. If only for the optics they shouldn't be going since Pelosi is one of the main negotiators on the gov issue. If I was sitting at home with no paycheck I'd sure as hell be pissed that one of the few people needed to end this was kissing asses and getting her ass kissed in Brussels and the ME. Trump went to Iraq when the government was shutdown. It's funny how Trump tells the person 2nd in line to the presidency to fly commercial to Afghanistan.

The argument I saw by Josh Barro seemed liked a good one. If McConnell isn't going to take up appropriations bills anymore and the Senate has decided that the government will no longer function again, what is stopping the House from starting impeachment proceedings right now? Impeachment is a process, not a conclusion from facts. The impeachment process itself can reveal facts through investigation. Just start now. Go from the "Trump directed Cohen to perjure himself" after Cohen testifies.

If I was sitting at home with no paycheck I'd sure as hell be pissed that one of the few people needed to end this was kissing asses and getting her ass kissed in Brussels and the ME. What the do you think happens on the diplomatic meetings? Do you think foreign officials kiss the speaker of the House's feet? Do you think we do that when they visit? Their politicians are like our politicians, they smile for photos and are kinda jerks behind closed doors. Just because they are all smiles for the photo doesn't make the plane ride and meeting afterwords fun. Maybe they will have nice food. Also, this is a pit stop in Brussels before they fly to Afghanistan for a weekend update with the troops so they can have a in person conversation with the commanders and see the troops. Its like a 22 hour flight one way. They are going to spend the majority of their time on a plane. Planes suck. They traveled to the airport by air force charter bus. Every part of this trip sounds like the mother fucking worst. We have all been in the US pol thread for years, but do people not realize that working for the goverment mostly sucks? This trip included. Ok? I still maintain that trying to have this trip at this time was a poor decision on Pelosis part. You begin ceding the high ground on workers not getting paid when you are going overseas mid negotiations. If you believe this shutdown is the biggest crisis facing America now, as you conveyed in your speech last week, then act like it. Stop skipping meetings, regardless of Trumps stupid antics, and at least look like you're trying. Hell, I'm still waiting for the comprehensive deal that gives DACA protections for the wall. Word is Trumps own aids, including possibly Kushner, arent against something like that. Get it done. They have phones on the plane and the rest of congress flys home to their district on Thursday/Friday. The entire trip would have been done by the time congress reopened. You just made me think about the Diablo Immortal announcement. That's never good. As for leaving DC, I think that is a mistake as well. It's insulting to the hundreds of thousands of people struggling right now due to DCs inaction. Politically, it's also a missed opportunity. If you want to win the argument that you are on the employees side and that you arent at fault for the shutdown then stay in DC while McConnell and co scurry home. DT is insulting everyone by hindering the government. (and McConnell) I can't fathom how you blame others for their position. It's not like there will be progress over the weekend while the politicians would've been gone.
|
In before DT slams even worse accusations back at Cohen and the investigation.
A really disgusting part of US politics is that no matter what comes out of the investigation, the Senate can still back him up, and most likely will. I can't possibly see Trump resign, being corrupt is acceptable and often encouraged by his standards.

Just took a way too deep dive into some history on Giuliani. From an article published in the NYT back in '85, two very relevant quotes.
"My view is: The way you end corruption, you scare the daylights out of people."
"Organized crime figures are illegitimate people who would go on being illegitimate people if I got them off. I would not want to spend a lot of time with them, shake hands with them, have sidebar conferences with them and become involved with people who are close to totally evil."
Whenever Giuliani ends up testifying in front of Congress for this clusterfuck, I truly hope someone pulls the first quote on him.
Separately, ever since hearing of Melania's trip to Florida, I really can't help but wonder if it's is a prelude to something. If shit's about to go down, I'd get out of town too.

Melania leaving is simple. White House staff is not getting payed either and it probably makes them grumpy. Mar-a-lago personal is being payed.
Its not fleeing the capital because 'shit could go down'.

ShoCkeyy, I heard that Barrack Obama is going to sneak into the white house and choke slam Donald Trump today!
Seriously, where did you hear that? What was the basis? It doesn't warrant a post if you can't back up that one-liner at all. My guess is that people were speculating based on the way Guliani has been behaving, but you should clarify.

Well if Mueller actually has multiple pieces of corroborating evidence that Trump instructed Cohen to lie to Congress then you can turn out the lights because the party is over. Even Barr testified this week that the President instructing someone to lie would be a crime.
Or at least that is what id like to believe. I can't imagine that there is a literal email, letter, or voice recording of Trump saying this. Without that I imagine many Republicans wont buy it.

I mean he could probably shoot someone on 5th Avenue and be fine, so yeah.
So apparently, if Buzzfeeds sources are to be believed, Mueller not only has witness testimony but also texts, emails, and "other documents." I wonder from who and what exactly Trump Org emails could possibly say on the matter.

Wouldn't be shocked if Weisselberg was kept in the loop to make sure everyone had their stories straight. The problem with that however...
"Why the Allen Weisselberg immunity deal may be the biggest news of this bananas week"
https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/24/politics/allen-weisselberg-trump/index.html
You would think if you're going to build a Moscow tower and make millions, your CFO would be informed.
EDIT: I recall hearing "limited immunity" a lot around that story. To me that would mean that this covers very specific topics, or maybe even just one. Just speculating.
EDIT EDIT: Bet it's Don Jr and Ivanka also in the emails.
