What is Games Done Quick?

Games Done Quick is a series of charity video game marathons. These events feature high-level gameplay by speedrunners raising money for charity. Games Done Quick has teamed up with several charities in its six-year history, including Doctors Without Borders and the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

To date, Games Done Quick has raised over 10 million dollars for charity! We also average over 1500 people in attendance at our events, including staff, volunteers, runners, and attendees just looking to have fun and support the event!

Some of the games I'm looking forward to watching:

Diddy Kong Racing, Luigi's Mansion, Metroid Prime, Super Monkey Ball, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Kazooie (Stiv!), Pokemon Puzzle League, Kirby's Dream Land 2, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Chrono Trigger, Mario Kart 64, Tetris, Crypt of the NecroDancer, Super Metroid, Final Fantasy VII, Diablo II, Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Earthbound (Ness!). Pretty much every major GDQ title besides Ocarina of Time!

As usual I'm mostly hyped for the N64 games. MK64 is great and relatively short. Some of the skips are mindblowing. You wish you had known them when you were battling your brother/friend/whoever. Lakitu is a drunkard

Also really hyped for Majoras Mask, Mario64 and Banjo Kazooie. 3 of my all time favs. Just hope the donation reader will be more careful during stivs run. Don't want to hear the: "You had sex with your friends wife during gdq while he was there" memes like the last time.

I hope everyone posts highlights/ recommended games from this week, when they happen, so that those of us who miss them can check them out on the VODs

I was surprised there was no thread already & how soon the event is starting. If anything is missing from the OP, let me know.

And if someone could put the event to the TL calendar, would be great!

Was wondering when this was starting, sooner than I thought apparently.

Not conflicting with Evo this year either, which is good.

I appreciate their effort and goals, but the selection of games is growing less and less interesting forme with each iteration. Then again, I've never played that many speedrunning-related games in the first place.

Mafe-

They try to change up their game list quite a bit each time just so they dont have too much overlap from previous GDQ's. Unfortunately what has happened is that they played a lot of popular/iconic games in the beginning to grow and spread awareness. I think thats why now you are seeing less and less games that are more well known.

But I will say, after the previous 2 GDQ's I have really started not caring about what games are showcased because most of the time, the runners and casters have done a very good job at being very entertaining. I have found myself having a ton of fun just listening to their conversations multiple times and still having no idea what is going on in the game.

Plus the iconic and popular games become less interesting the more you've seen them.

I'd say give the games you don't know a chance, though, as long as you don't care about spoilers for them. Battle Kid was a really good run even though I never heard of the game (apparently it's like IWBTG lite). Guacamelee was a lot better than I was expecting, extremely broken code yet still mostly technical platforming.

As mentioned above, Battle Kid is good if you like precision platforming in the "unfair game" genre. Guacamelee had a good couch, technical movement, and some weird hackery with checkpoints.

SotN Glitchless Any% got a world record (albeit, in an uncommon category?), and of course SotN is a good run regardless.

I see that the OP has a YouTube archive for VODs, but does anyone happen to know if Reddit made their usual link to timestamped VODs (like this one https://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/3z9fyi/agdq_vod_thread_2016/ )? They tended to be updated within like a day or two!

I like this lineup more than the last couple of years

There's still some megaman (4 runs overall), just not until later.

Looks like 4 Megamans, Azure Striker, Shovel Knight. Ton of Metroidvania's and other platformers (not sure which of these are Megaman-esque).

Only one Pokemon game (unless you count Puzzle League), but that's about the norm.

The commentary between the runner and the couch friend for Mirror's Edge is HILARIOUS. The couch friend is trolling/ backseat gaming soooo hard The runner has literally no sarcasm detector.

Edit: The couch guy's quips are getting a little old imo.

So apparently the Timer was running slower than actual time (like 1 second/min off), which is a huge deal. Been fixed since Super Monkey Ball, but there some records/PBs that have to be annulled because of it.

Nier Automata has plenty of jokes thrown around both by donations and just the people. It's also interesting since the speedrunner has a like a disability so he's playing with one hand (nier automata is not an easy game )

The Halo run is fun (afaik the speedrunner is the world record holder or one of the coach guy must be mentioning something)

halo was good.

neir was above average.

battle kid was good.

guac melee was good.

the mirrors edges were great

donkey kong 64 is a standout.

jet set radio was good.

doom is great.

rest I havent seen or just average.

a lot of the humor from previous years has been neutered, you can tell a lot of runners and couch people are nervous when they try to toe the line. this is unfortunate. 2014 and 2015 (2014 was the first year I watched live) were a lot more loose with the humor, sometimes it went down in flames but mostly it was more fun.

Pokemon run was fantastic! I never played the games so I didn't know what to expect and was always a big fan of the older games (red/blue/yellow/silver/gold/crystal) so it was great to see similar bosses and pokemons used in battles in upgraded graphics and with explanations too.

I plan to just catch the VODs, but yeah - some of the big games are really scheduled in a non-friendly way to EU viewers.

OMG Onimusha up next. I remember being a little kid, stuck at the point where you had to shoot the arrow at the flying thing blocking the way. I couldn't do it because you had to be in a precise spot: I went to vacation and I remember I saw a videogames magazine with the complete walkthrough. I begged my mother to let me buy it so that I could know how to progress

I dont see the point in calling an 8 hour run a speed run more of a "im going to play the main story without side quests" run imo

Id recommend watching sevens1ns, cereth or caracarnvi. They frequently do FF-speedruns, and its pretty amazing.

The fact that runs take time is entirely about the length of the game and available sequence breaks, and not at all about wether its a "speed" or "story"-run.

If anything, im amazed someone has the focus and dedication to play a 8-hour speed run game again and again, and find it far more impressive than shorter speed games.

Divinity Original Sin was awesome and I recommend watching it if you like interesting glitches; it didn't look like a difficult speedrun, but it was definitely pretty interesting. It's was a short co-op run, the two dudes explained everything quite clearly, and it's the first time I've seen a speedrun using real co-op strats - IE unless I'm mistaken, the strats they used only works because they were two players.

Chrono Trigger run is fantastic. Such good memories. Had to bail though since I never finished the game and didn't want to see ending lol. I'm pretty sure I fought lavos before so I guess I got close to the end.

This is only an any% run and you can access lavos very early on. Further, the ending changes depending on when you fight him

If you like games like Super Meat Boys, VVVVVV or IWBTB you should definitely check out the Splasher run. Only 2 people in the audience and his couch didn't show up but Gyoo just rocks it by himself. Really positive run, great commentary and never have I seen such a wholesome twitch chat before.

Do they have to sing these songs during the KH runs every time? I was under the impression not many people actually like it, lol. Unless there's a donation incentive for it, then that's fine. More money for charity is cool.

There is an incentive for which song to sing and i guess they pick the top 3 to perfom. The number one had over 5.000 dollars during one of the games before the KH run. So its fine and they have some good singers too.

he was the runner for kingdom hearts, and he straight up yelled a cuss word. people have been fined and even banned from future events for such things. supposedly banned for, I should say, lots of contention about a large number of bans.

The idea is absolutelly awesome Gummi missions are the worst aspect of the PS2 KHs they add nothing and only serve to create braindead playtime, so instead of a donation spam they came up with something creative.

FF7 is the run I wanted the most in this lineup. Can't get it live but will watch it later for sure.

I'm also a bit tired of lots of run going through wall and stuff, specially Metroid Prime. That was one of my favorite game to watch but now I can't stand it.

I mean, it's also not all black or white. Some game breaks are fine for me. Ex: the banjo kazooie runs was awesome.

How to make 100% sure you derail donation trains:

1. Let the Yetee once again snipe the 1,000,000 with a big donation.
2. Let the Yetee destroy one upcoming naming bidwar with a 10,000$ donation to name Ness in Earthbound ... after themselves. 'Yetee' is now 11k in front (2nd place is only at 670$) . I'm sure people are going to bid against that -.-

liking that the runner and couch people making fun of the continuity inconsistencies, gaping plot holes, and general nonsensical story. FF7 was my jam when it first came out when I was in junior high, but playing it again in my 20s, I was saddened how terrible it actually was.

Terrible is exaggeration, i gotta admit that FF7 test hard your suspension of disbelief sometimes but well it's not like the franchise never done (simply not getting away from the rails of a train, jumping waterfalls and searching for a single diving helmet that allows a group to travel underwater just happened a game before).

I take some dumb things in favor of nice scenes/gameplay segments.

According to coomatty's posts in this thread, that's not true.

Just in case you missed it: Air Canada's twitter is staffed by more than their customer service dept. We were contacted about it.
Also, no one needs to walk on eggshells. The fact that we've only had to punish, what, 4 runners in the entire history of GDQ should say a lot. It takes way more than just dropping a swear word to get banned in any form at GDQ. Especially since many of those bans were not even for things the runners did on-stream.

There's always this cloud of rumors that pops up every GDQ about how people are getting banned and there's drama happening behind closed doors all the time. None of that seems to ever be true lol

TBF the drama with the runners is usually not the big drama of each gdq but even then the last quote you quote omits a part of the truth. Sure only 4 or so runners were outright banned from attending GDQ's but I could immidietly name you 2 runners who were banned from submitting runs for some time and 1 runner who was temporarily banned additionally to the 4 permantly banned guys.

Most GDQ drama normally has something to do with them becoming more PC and anti-fun every year, not necessarily with the runners per se. And Mike Uyama ofc tho there was no UyamaDrama for some time Also Twitch Chat.

It is like cyberdemon531 getting banned for the hat shenanigans at a previous gdq. At surface level it felt like an overreaction on the part of gdq but the guy has been a known shit-stirrer in the community for years. Dude has been banned from twitch tv and twitter since that MAGA hat incident.

I agree with the sentiment of gdqs being more strict than pre-2013 but there are a bunch of baseless rumors shoved in with the legit criticism.

I think the worst part of FF7 for me is that it was the beginning of a hard shift from fantasy mixed with a little steampunk to full on anime tropes and architypes, and a haphazard mishmash of everything tossed into their fantasy settings.

5 million bits (50k dollars) for Majora Mask's final boss blindfolded, which would be "easy" to reach if it was in the form of normal donations... but 5 million bits is a way too much. Bits aren't supposed to be used for such large amounts, but for smaller stuff.

Now the run is starting, and they aren't even halfway yet... Twitch takes such a large cut for bits, why would you choose twitch bits over a simple donation? GDQ staff dropped the ball on that one imo.

The incentive itself kind of sucks too, unfortunately. It's only for Blindfolded Majora final boss fight, not a full run or partial run. For a goal that high, I'd expect something like the OoT or Punch Out blindfolded runs.

The Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out blindfolded runs are some of my favorite all-time GDQ runs... Especially the latter, because I used to get my ass handed to me in SPO. Zallard is a god.

now that it is almost over, lets give our favorite runs and an explanation why. I was only able to catch about a 3rd of the runs, having a day job sucks, and would like some casual viewing for the next few months.

1. Kingdom Hearts 2.

reason: spikevegeta, and to a lesser extend, the runner. this was gold all the way through. good commentary from the runner and couch crew. disney songs were a bit cringeworthy, but you can mute them, except gaston, nobody sings gastons like spikevegeta. the bonus of the bosses at lvl 1 was top notch as well.

2. mirror's edge games, both of them.

couch guy tongue-in-cheek making fun of twitch chat meme from AGDQ was hilarious, the joke did drag on a bit but the couch guy dropped it before it became annoying (for me at least). the runs were interesting, good showcase of technical ability and broken game mechanics.

3. doom.

great run, great commentary. very solid viewing experience throughout. consistently good quality. rare for these events.

4. donkey kong 64.

hilarious commentary, that eclipsed the interest created from gameplay, if that is your thing. it is mine. game broken like dropped china, if that is your thing. it is mine.

5. FF7.

great run, great commentary. suffered from it's time length, made up for by the engaging runner and couch crew.

6. super panga world.

great run, great commentary. pumped up couch crew, didnt stray into annoying territory. one of the stages is mario busting out of the creator's poopshute.

7. megaman x block.

does this really need explanation? megaman blocks are always quality, and this didnt disappoint.

8. dark souls 1 and 3.

good runs, great commentary. bubbles' self-effacing jokes are always great, and even more cutting this year.

9. bionic commando.

PJ is always a favorite, unfortunately he is underutilized this year.

10. jet set radio.

good run, good commentary. engaging viewing experience.

things I heard were good, but didnt see personally, but will check out later:

freedom planet
pokemon games
banjo kazooie
super meat-boy
jedi knights 2

Personally I think the emphases on meme or game breaking glitches was maybe a bit old, but I would have love just some "normal" TAS speedrun, especially since it's a community that get so little exposure.

Yeah, shorter TAS block would be great, showing off a few popular games with the absolute optimal times.

Same with Tetris block, really. Ignoring the terrible setup times that were 4x longer than the runs, if they'd trimmed down the fat and just showed off the major modes that everyone focuses on, it would be much better.

I think they got overzealous with the bit threshold when they met the first one (Majora was the second bit threshold the entire marathon IIRC). If the pace had kept up, they probably figured they'd hit the blindfolded Majora threshold. It didn't though-which is pretty reasonable when you realize a lot of those bits meeting the first threshold were leftovers/etc.

Yeah the first goal was 500,000, and the second was 5,000,000, ten times as much.

I enjoyed the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past run, was genuinely entertaining and very lighthearted.

Mario Kart Wii was kind of cringe worthy if you're into watching that stuff. Not to be mean, but it was the worst speedrun I've ever watched easily.

Rise of the Triad seemed pretty inappropriate, seems like somebody made a mistake letting that into the schedule.

Also really enjoyed FFVII, Twilight Princess, Hollow Knight, the Mirror's Edge games, Metroid Prime, and The Lion King. Pretty fun event overall.

Missed a lot of this GDQ but what I enjoyed were the ones I caught. The Pokemon Firesoul/silver w/e, bits of diablo II, chrono trigger (most of this run I caught) and some old fashioned gameboy TMNT. I would've loved to see the full diablo II and some other ones but the timing was just too terrible for me. Oh well, lucky for me they have vods lol.

as usual, GDQ is back heavy, with the last 2 days having the bulk of the expected hits. but, it also started with a bang with the first day or so being fantastic, leaving the middle kind of meh.

probably to skirt around the 4th festivities.

I think they got overzealous with the bit threshold when they met the first one (Majora was the second bit threshold the entire marathon IIRC). If the pace had kept up, they probably figured they'd hit the blindfolded Majora threshold. It didn't though-which is pretty reasonable when you realize a lot of those bits meeting the first threshold were leftovers/etc.

probably the nature of the game not being 'charity friendly'
that being said if games like doom and quake are allowed i don't see why rotd can't

I agree with GTR, rise of the triad wasnt any less appropriate than doom. just replaces a bit of gore for language.

though the doom runner didnt really get much into the gore of doom, did hardly any fighting at all.

You know how GDQ get's more and more PC every year?

Well let's just say... the coach and the runner for Rise of the Triad were fine. The thing is the game is like a pinnacle of vulgarity and features 'banned' swear words like every 30 secs.. "Fuck" "Shit" "Fuck". And that's just one sequence. Was honestly pretty funny

1.FF7 Finally the category that isn't a wrong warp fuckfest (even though Brossentia reaction to motorcycles and Kalm flashbacks was awesome at RPGLB), the commentary was really good.

2.KH2FM a game that i dislike a lot to play normally (triangle to win) gets awesome on speedrun setting.

3. AlttP OMG the category they did is OoT tier on glitching.

I always love FF7 runs because of nostalgia and the OST, but I have to say the two commentators this year went above and beyond imo. It seemed like they were really prepared and knew exactly what they were going to talk about for the full 8 hours. I also love when RPG runners/commentators actually bother explaining the story since the text is being skipped. Makes the run a lot more immersive.

As someone who has never been the type to play tons and tons of games, and rather just play a Blizzard game to death for 5 years at a time, this is amazing for me. I know Cloud has some sweet ass sword and that his waifu dies, but that's the best TLDR I've got.

Sonic Generations
Mirror's Edge 1 & 2
OmniBus
I Am Bread (fcking SpikeVegeta)
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (only watch if you have played the game before, pls)
Banjo-Kazooie
Silent Hill 2
Resident Evil: Code: Veronica X
Onimusha: Warlords
Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix
Final Fantasy VII
Dark Souls III
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

(If a game is missing, I still need to catch up on a lot of stuff.)

Act Raiser was pretty good also. The commentary from the runner was really good.

Also, I think FF VII was the best run of the event.

Also really liked the Super Panga World Run. Has probably the highest difficulty of all Super Mario Games. The commentary was excellent. Knowledgeable, really funny and punheavy. Also probably some of the bigger guys of the speedrunning community on the couch with Carl Sagan and Pangea Panga.

Splasher is just a really fun game if you like games like SMB, VVVVVV or IWBTB. The runner was completely alone, because the guys who planned to be on the couch presumably overslept and also there were only 2 guys in the audience. So at the beginning one was really sad for him which turned twitchchat from the cesspool of shit it usually is in the most supportive and wholesome chat. It definitely helped that the runner, Gyoo also was just soooooo incredibly nice. "Yeah it's okay that they overslept, it was probably a long night for them" and he thanked every donation that mentioned him. Fun game if you like platformers like this and great runner. If you watch it, do it with twitchchat.

Yeah iirc there were a few key holes in the schedule that are usually filled with more popular games. I think the roster was a bit underwhelming that year.

2016 was a low point. especially after how great 2015 was with their events. they redeemed themselves a bit this year, both agdq and sgdq were quite good, but nowhere near it was 2013 and 15

Of course the MegaMan gauntlet starts after I have to bail......blah.

Axiom Verge just about to start, currently running at just south of $250k.

What was the record for an SGDQ? Anyone know?

The sound track is made via the tech staff and is mostly game music, but the audio engineers this event is Power Up Audio. You can give them a shout out here: https://twitter.com/PowerUpAudio

I might have to pull an early hour workout whilst watching the slew of SMB games because I'm old-school like that. For most Americans, though the SMB gauntlet is perfect timing, 2100-midnight eastern I think.

I might have to pull an early hour workout whilst watching the slew of SMB games because I'm old-school like that. For most Americans, though the SMB gauntlet is perfect timing, 2100-midnight eastern I think.

It's less about the game itself and more about the commentary of the player that made the run great but yeah SMB is kinda fun to watch. The game reminds so much of Ori and the Blind Forest(newer game but also fun to watch being run)

Around $800K so far; we should be able to hit a million pretty easily, but I don't see us beating last year's SGDQ amount.

Isn't this fairly close to being on par with last year. It usually goes up an insane amount in the final day (still 2.5 days left). 1.79 million is a bit of a stretch, but I can see 1.5 being possible.

Fucking memes...I was legit going to ask about GrandPoobear stomping without legs. And I don't even read twitch chat or his stream, so I have no clue how I heard that meme.

The sidescrolling gunship section is slightly off sync between the two players, but looks like one large, double-screen sidescroller heh.

damn, happened again. this time he merely dropped his controller on the ground and it froze mitch's game.

and then a 3rd crash without poo's interference, time to get that NES some new connectors.

They usually have the ridiculous Super Metroid hype towards the end though don't they? Was early this time around.

AGDQ this year showed that Super Metroid is basically just a donation hog, not a generator.

I hope so. Either way I'm not that interested in comparing events unless the difference ends up being huge, it's almost as uninteresting as people whining that X esport is dying because look at the viewers.

Looks like we'll hit a million dollars with about 1.5 days left

If you have any recommended speedruns from this week, please tell us so we can watch the VODs!

I went to sleep after the half-life run last night. Anything worth watching since then.

On another note this mega-man race is almost frame for frame at 42 minutes. Damn.

edit: 4 second difference in the end. Really good.

best runs:

kingdom hearts as always

shantae surprisingly

both ninja gaidens

enter the gungeon

all the megaman runs, of course

tomb raider

freezememe

all the castlevania runs, I mean cmon

CUPHEAD, true standout so far.

celeste, surprising nobody

one-handed mario

mario 3 race

streets of rage 2 mania mode, this was amazing

mario 64 going on right now is great

undoubtably many more great runs, but I have to sleep and work to live.

It's definitely something. Janky is one of many words to describe it

I'm just happy he kept calm or it would have been really awkward lol.

That was the wrong warp failing, it's supposed to take you to the credits but most of the time it just freezes.

Looking like it might break last years donation numbers at this point. Hard to say though, most of the major incentives for FF6 have been met already (the small ones are close to being met).

edit: nvm we're definitely gonna pass it. Almost there 30 minutes into FF6.

Passed a while ago now, currently just over 3 hours into the run. Another 450k beats AGDQ 2018. I don't see that happening now though. Only a projected 4 hours left in the last run of the day.

Doom was awesome last night despite a few technical hiccups.

Warcraft 3 by Covert_Muffin was also pretty funny but definitely an acquired taste.

I actually found the W3 run pretty enjoyable, obviously pretty basic micro to good players but impressive none the less
